In this paper, as a first step toward frame-like gauge invariant formulation for massive mixed symmetry bosonic fields, we consider mixed tensors, corresponding to Young tableau with two rows with k >= 2 boxes in the first row and only one box in the second one. We construct complete Lagrangian and gauge transformations describing massive particles in (anti) de Sitter space-time with arbitrary dimension d >= 4 and investigate all possible massless and partially massless limits.
We consider the sigma-model description of an open string interacting with massive fields of the fourth (third massive) level. Equations of motion for the background fields are obtained by demanding that the renormalized operator of the energy-momentum tensor trace vanishes.
In this paper we complete our construction of frame-like gauge invariant description for massive mixed symmetry tensor fields corresponding to arbitrary Young tableau with two rows started in [1]. We consider general massive theory in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary cosmological constant as well as all special limits which exist both in de Sitter and in anti-de Sitter spaces.
In this paper we discuss in detail the frame-like formulation of free bosonic massless higher-spin fields of general symmetry type in AdS(d), announced recently in hep-th/0311164, hep-th/0501108. Properties of gauge invariant and AdS covariant action functionals and their flat limits are carefully analyzed.
It is shown that supersymmetric integrable models in two dimensions, both relativistic (i.e. super-Toda type theories) and non-relativistic (reductions of super-KP hierarchies) can be associated to general Poisson-brackets structures given by superaffinizations of any bosonic Lie or any super-Lie algebra. This result allows enlarging the set of supersymmetric integrable models, which are no longer restricted to the subclass of superaffinizations of purely fermionic super-Lie algebras (that is admitting fermionic simple roots only).
Covariant Lagrangian formulation for free bosonic massless fields of arbitrary mixed-symmetry type in (A)dS(d) space-time is presented. The analysis is based on the frame-like formulation of higher-spin field dynamics [1] with higher-spin fields described as p-forms taking values in appropriate modules of the (A)dS(d). The problem of finding free field action is reduced to the analysis of an appropriate differential complex, with the derivation Q associated with the variation of the action. The constructed action exhibits additional gauge symmetries in the flat limit in agreement with the gene…
We describe the family of normalizable solutions in linearized open string field theory, defined by $QΨ_0=0$ ($Q$ is BRST charge) understood in the sense $<<QΨ_0,Φ>>=0$ for an arbitrary string field $Φ$. The solutions depend on shifted partition numbers and are parametrized in terms of values of $ζ$-function at pairs of positive numbers greater than 2. We argue that the operators, defined by these solutions, create mixed quantum-mechanical states by acting on the vacuum (as opposed to standard vertex operators, creating the pure states with definite masses and spins).
Free mixed-symmetry arbitrary spin massive bosonic and fermionic fields propagating in AdS(5) are investigated. Using the light-cone formulation of relativistic dynamics we study bosonic and fermionic fields on an equal footing. Light-cone gauge actions for such fields are constructed. Various limits of the actions are discussed.
We develop the BRST approach to gauge invariant Lagrangian construction for the massive mixed symmetry integer higher spin fields described by the rank-two Young tableaux in arbitrary dimensional Minkowski space. The theory is formulated in terms of auxiliary Fock space. No off-shell constraints on the fields and the gauge parameters are imposed. The approach under consideration automatically leads to a gauge invariant Lagrangian for massive theory with all appropriate Stuckelberg fields. It is shown that all the restrictions defining an irreducible representation of the Poincare group arise f…
For SCFTs with an $SU(2)$ R-symmetry, we determine the superconformal blocks that contribute to the four-point correlation function of a priori distinct half-BPS superconformal primaries as an expansion in terms of the relevant bosonic conformal blocks. This is achieved by using the superconformal Casimir equation and the superconformal Ward identity to fix the coefficients of the bosonic blocks uniquely in a dimension-independent way. In addition we find that many of the resulting coefficients are related through a web of linear transformations of the conformal data.
The frame-like covariant Lagrangian formulation of bosonic and fermionic mixed-symmetry type higher spin massless fields propagating on the AdS(d) background is proposed. Higher spin fields are described in terms of gauge p-forms which carry tangent indices representing certain traceless tensor or gamma transversal spinor-tensor representations of the AdS(d) algebra o(d-1,2) (or o(d,1) for bosonic fields in dS(d)). Manifestly gauge invariant Abelian higher spin field strengths are introduced for the general case. We describe the general framework and demonstrate how it works for the mixed-symm…
Free AdS(5) mixed-symmetry massless bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of arbitrary spins are described by using su(2,2) spinor language. Manifestly covariant action functionals are constructed and field equations are derived.
We formulate Fradkin-Vasiliev type theory of massless higher spin fields in AdS(5). The corresponding action functional describes cubic order approximation to gravitational interactions of bosonic mixed-symmetry fields of a particular "hook" symmetry type and totally symmetric bosonic and fermionic fields.
A frame-like action for arbitrary mixed-symmetry bosonic massless fields in Minkowski space is constructed. The action is given in a simple form and consists of two terms for a field of any spin. The fields and gauge parameters are certain tensor-valued differential forms. The formulation is based on the unfolded form of equations for mixed-symmetry fields.
In this note, we construct a BRST invariant cubic vertex for massless fields of arbitrary mixed symmetry in flat space-time. The construction is based on the vertex given in bosonic Open String Field Theory. The algebra of gauge transformations is closed without any additional, higher than cubic, couplings due to the presence of an infinite tower of massless fields. We briefly discuss the generalization of this result to a curved space-time and other possible implications.
We consider a (2+1) dimensional Wilson-Fisher boson coupled to a (3+1) dimensional U(1) gauge field. This theory possesses a strong-weak duality in terms of the coupling constant e, and is self-dual at a particular value of $e$. We derive exact relations between transport coefficients for a $ν=1$ quantum Hall state at the self-dual point. Using boson-fermion duality, we map the $ν=1$ bosonic quantum Hall state to a Fermi sea of the dual fermion, and observed that the exact relationships between transport coefficients at the bosonic self-dual point are reproduced by a simple random phase approx…
We review the structure of local Lagrangians and field equations for free bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. These are first presented in a constrained setting and then the ($\g$-)trace constraints on fields and gauge parameters are eliminated via the introduction of a number of auxiliary fields.
We obtain explicit formulas for the eight bosonic and eight fermionic fluctuations around the mixed-flux generalization of the Hofman-Maldacena giant magnon on AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$T$^4$ and AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$S$^3 \times$S$^1$. As a check of our results, we confirm that the semiclassical quantization of these fluctuations leads to a vanishing one-loop correction to the magnon energy, as expected from symmetry based arguments.
The unfolded formulation for arbitrary massless mixed-symmetry bosonic and fermionic fields in Minkowski space is constructed. The unfolded form is proved to be uniquely determined by the requirement that all gauge symmetries are manifest. The unfolded equations have the form of a covariant constancy condition. The gauge fields and gauge parameters are differential forms with values in certain irreducible Lorentz tensors. The unfolded equations for bosons determine completely those for fermions. The proposed unfolded formulation also contains dual formulations for massless mixed-symmetry field…
We review the structure of local Lagrangians and field equations for free bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. These are first presented in a constrained setting extending the metric formulation of linearized gravity, and then the ($γ$-)trace constraints on fields and gauge parameters are eliminated via the introduction of auxiliary fields. We also display the emergence of Weyl-like symmetries in particular classes of models in low space-time dimensions.
In this paper we consider frame-like formulation for mixed symmetry spin-tensors corresponding to arbitrary Young tableau with two rows. First of all, we extend Skvortsov formulation for massless mixed symmetry bosonic fields in flat Minkowski space to the case of massless fermionic fields. Then, using such massless fields as building blocks, we construct gauge invariant formulation for massive spin-tensors with the same symmetry properties. We give general massive theories in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary cosmological constant and investigate all possible massless and partially massless limits.
We analyse completely the BRST cohomology on local functionals for two dimensional sigma models coupled to abelian world sheet gauge fields, including effective bosonic D-string models described by Born-Infeld actions. In particular we prove that the rigid symmetries of such models are exhausted by the solutions to generalized Killing vector equations which we have presented recently, and provide all the consistent first order deformations and candidate gauge anomalies of the models under study. For appropriate target space geometries we find nontrivial deformations both of the abelian gauge t…
In the framework of light-cone gauge approach, bosonic and fermionic mixed-symmetry continuous-spin fields in AdS space and flat space are considered. For such fields, the light-cone gauge actions are found. Realization of relativistic symmetries of AdS and flat spaces on the continuous-spin fields is also presented. Simple realization of spin operators is found. With respect to vector variable entering the continuous-spin fields, the spin operators for the fields in flat space turn out to be first-order differential operators, while, for the the fields in AdS space, the spin operators are rea…
Using the light-cone gauge approach to relativistic field dynamics, we study arbitrary spin fermionic and bosonic fields propagating in flat space of dimension greater than or equal to four. Generating functions of parity invariant cubic interaction vertices for totally symmetric and mixed-symmetry massive and massless fields are obtained. For the case of totally symmetric fields, we derive restrictions on the allowed values of spins and the number of derivatives. These restrictions provide a complete classification of parity invariant cubic interaction vertices for totally symmetric fermionic…
In this paper we develop the frame-like gauge invariant formulation for the massive two-column bosonic fields in (anti) de Sitter space-times. We begin with the partially massless cases in AdS and dS and then we combine these results into the general massive theory. Separate section is devoted to the special case where both columns have equal number of indices.
Massive fields on (anti) de Sitter space realize extended shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We find these symmetries for all bosonic p-forms and mixed symmetry fields, in arbitrary spacetime dimension. These shift symmetric fields correspond to the missing longitudinal modes of mixed symmetry partially massless fields where the top row of the Young tableau is activated.
We develop new tools for an in-depth study of our recent proposal for Matrix Theory. We construct the anomaly-free and finite planar continuum limit of the ground state with SO(2^{13}) symmetry matching with the tadpole and tachyon free IR stable high temperature ground state of the open and closed bosonic string. The correspondence between large N limits and spacetime effective actions is demonstrated more generally for an arbitrary D25brane ground state which might include brane-antibrane pairs or NS-branes and which need not have an action formulation. Closure of the finite N matrix Lorentz…
We study some features of bosonic particle path-integral quantization in a twistor-like approach by use of the BRST-BFV quantization prescription. In the course of the Hamiltonian analysis we observe links between various formulations of the twistor-like particle by performing a conversion of the Hamiltonian constraints of one formulation to another. A particular feature of the conversion procedure applied to turn the second-class constraints into the first-class constraints is that the simplest Lorentz-covariant way to do this is to convert a full mixed set of the initial first- and second-cl…
It has been shown that the L-type bosonic symmetry-protected-trivial (SPT) phases with pure gauge anomalous boundary can all be realized via non-linear $σ$-models (NL$σ$Ms) of the symmetry group $G$ with various topological terms. Those SPT phases (called the pure SPT phases) can be classified by group cohomology ${\cal H}^d(G,\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$. But there are also SPT phases with mixed gauge-gravity anomalous boundary (which will be called the mixed SPT phases). Some of the mixed SPT states were also referred as the beyond-group-cohomology SPT states. In this paper, we show that those be…
We propose a description of continuous spin massless fields of mixed-symmetry type in Minkowski space at the level of equations of motion. It is based on the appropriately modified version of the constrained system originally used to describe massless bosonic fields of mixed-symmetry type. The description is shown to produce generalized versions of triplet, metric-like, and light-cone formulations. In particular, for scalar continuous spin fields we reproduce the Bekaert-Mourad formulation and the Schuster-Toro formulation. Because a continuous spin system inevitably involves infinite number o…
Particular class of AdS(d) mixed-symmetry bosonic massless fields corresponding to arbitrary two-column Young tableaux is considered. Unique gauge invariant free actions are found and equations of motion are analyzed.
We introduce the D=4 twistorial tensionfull bosonic string by considering the canonical twistorial 2--form in two--twistor space. We demonstrate its equivalence to two bosonic string models: due to Siegel (with covariant worldsheet vectorial string momenta $P_μ^{m}(τ,σ)$) and the one with tensorial string momenta $P_{[μν]}(τ,σ)$. We show how to obtain in mixed space-time--twistor formulation the Soroka--Sorokin--Tkach--Volkov (SSTV) string model and subsequently by harmonic gauge fixing the Bandos--Zheltukhin (BZ) model, with constrained spinorial coordinates.
We derive twistorial tensionful bosonic string action by considering on the world sheet the canonical twistorial 2-form in two-twistor space. We demonstrate the equivalence of or model to two known momentum formulations of D=4 bosonic string, with covariant worldsheet vectorial string momenta $P_μ^m(τ,σ)$ and the one with tensorial string momenta $P_{[μν]}(τ,σ)$. All considered here string actions, in twistorial and mixed spinor-spacetime formulations, are classically equivalent to the Nambu-Goto action.
In this paper we would like to discuss the emergence of D-branes from infinite many D-instantons in bosonic and type IIA string theory in the framework of boundary string field theory.
We present a list of all inequivalent bosonic covariant free particle wave equations in a flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension. The wave functions are assumed to have a finite number of components. We relate these wave equations to equivalent versions obtained following other approaches.
We construct invariants for bosonic and spinning tensionless (null) strings in backgrounds that carry Killing tensors or Killing-Yano tensors of mixed type. This is facilitated by the close relation of these strings to point particles. We apply the construction to the Minkowski and to the Kerr-Newman backgrounds.
The usual ambient space approach to conformal fields is based on identifying the d-dimensional conformal space as the Dirac projective hypercone in a flat d+2-dimensional ambient space. In this work, we explicitly concentrate on singletons of any integer spin and propose an approach that allows one to have both locality and conformal symmetry manifest. This is achieved by using the ambient space representation in the fiber rather than in spacetime. This approach allows us to characterize a subalgebra of higher symmetries for any bosonic singleton, which is a candidate higher-spin algebra for m…
We study the circuit complexity for mixed bosonic Gaussian states in harmonic lattices in any number of dimensions. By employing the Fisher information geometry for the covariance matrices, we consider the optimal circuit connecting two states with vanishing first moments, whose length is identified with the complexity to create a target state from a reference state through the optimal circuit. Explicit proposals to quantify the spectrum complexity and the basis complexity are discussed. The purification of the mixed states is also analysed. In the special case of harmonic chains on the circle…
The quantum algebra of observables of the massive closed bosonic string in 1+3 dimensions has been developed so far in the rest frame of the string. In this paper a method to write this algebra in a manifestly Lorentz covariant form is explained and compared with an alternative approach in the literature.
Following the general formalism presented in arXiv:0812.3615 -- referred to as Paper I -- we derive the unfolded equations of motion for tensor fields of arbitrary shape and mass in constantly curved backgrounds by radial reduction of Skvortsov's equations in one higher dimension. The complete unfolded system is embedded into a single master field, valued in a tensorial Schur module realized equivalently via either bosonic (symmetric basis) or fermionic (anti-symmetric basis) vector oscillators. At critical masses the reduced Weyl zero-form modules become indecomposable. We explicitly project …
The theory of relativistic strings is considered in frames of Hamiltonian formalism and Dirac's quantization procedure. A special gauge fixing condition is formulated, related with the world sheet of the string in Lorentz-invariant way. As a result, a new set of Lorentz-invariant canonical variables is constructed, in which a consistent quantization of bosonic open string theory could be done in Minkowski space-time of dimension $d=4$. The obtained quantum theory possesses spin-mass spectrum with Regge-like behavior.
We give a simple prescription for computing, in the framework of the bosonic string theory, off-shell one-loop amplitudes with any number of external massless particles, both for the open and for the closed string. We discuss their properties and, in particular, for the two-string one-loop amplitudes we show their being transverse.
We construct a purely frame-like parent action that allows to dualise, at the off-shell level, an arbitrary mixed-symmetry bosonic massless fields in Minkowski background of dimensions d. Starting from any massless mixed-symmetry gauge field in the standard Skvortsov frame-like formulation and following an off-shell dualisation procedure, we obtain dual theories which are on-shell related by so(d-2) Hodge duality. The Hodge dualisation can be done on any column of the Young diagram characterizing the generalised spin of the original frame-like field. Dualisation with respect to the first colum…
We present a construction of fermionic operators in 3+1 dimensions in terms of bosonic fields in the framework of $QED_4$. The basic bosonic variables are the electric fields $E_i$ and their conjugate momenta $A_i$. Our construction generalizes the analogous constuction of fermionic operators in 2+1 dimensions. Loosely speaking, a fermionic operator is represented as a product of an operator that creates a pointlike charge and an operator that creates an infinitesimal t'Hooft loop of half integer strength. We also show how the axial $U(1)$ transformations are realized in this construction.
The presentation of the algebra of classical observables of the closed bosonic Nambu-Goto-String in 3+1 dimensions is given for the massless case $P^2=0,P\neq0$ in the relevant standard frame up to and including the second stratum. The elements and the relations of this algebra established so far are presented in the form of irreducible multiplets of the stabilizer group $E_2$ of the light-like vector $P$ in its standard form.
Kraemmer and Rebhan claimed the gauge independence of the conformal anomaly of bosonic string for various gauge fixings in the framework of the perturbation theory of two-dimensional quantum gravity. It is pointed out that their proof is wrong. The gauge independence is proved for the gauge-fixings which reduce to the linearized de Donder gauge in the flat limit of the background metric. Similar remarks are made also for the Rebhan-Kraemmer current anomaly.
We study some properties of the tachyonic lumps in the level truncation scheme of bosonic cubic string field theory. We find that several gauges work well and that the size of the lump as well as its tension is approximately independent of these gauge choices at level (2,4). We also examine the fluctuation spectrum around the lump solution, and find that a tachyon with m^2=-0.96 and some massive scalars appear on the lump world-volume. This result strongly supports the conjecture that a codimension 1 lump solution is identified with a D-brane of one lower dimension within the framework of boso…
We consider the massive relativistic particle models on fourdimensional Minkowski space extended by $N$ commuting Weyl spinors for N=1 and N=2. The N=1 model is invariant under the most general form of bosonic counterpart of simple D=4 supersymmetry, and provides after quantization the bosonic counterpart of chiral superfields, satisfying Klein--Gordon equation. In massless case these fields do satisfy the Fierz-Pauli equations. For N=2 we obtain after quantization the free massive higher spin fields for arbitrary spin satisfying linear Bargman--Wigner equations. Finally the problem of statist…
Finding pure states in an enlarged Hilbert space that encode the mixed state of a quantum field theory as a partial trace is necessarily a challenging task. Nevertheless, such purifications play the key role in characterizing quantum information-theoretic properties of mixed states via entanglement and complexity of purifications. In this article, we analyze these quantities for two intervals in the vacuum of free bosonic and Ising conformal field theories using, for the first time, the~most general Gaussian purifications. We provide a comprehensive comparison with existing results and identif…
We study a class of 4-dimensional $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theories with fermions in the 2-index symmetric and antisymmetric representations and classify their infrared phases. The choice $N=4\mathbb{Z}$ corresponds to gauging the fermion number and makes the theory purely bosonic. We examine the most general background fields of the centers of the gauge, non-abelian flavor, and $U(1)$-axial groups that can be consistently activated, thereby determine the faithful global continuous and discrete symmetries of the theory. This allows us to identify new mixed 0-form/1-form `t Hooft anomalies on both …
While it is possible to introduce quantum group symmetry into the framework of quantum mechanics, the general problem of how to implement quantum group symmetry into $(3+1)$ dimensional quantum field theory has not yet been solved. Here we try to estimate some features of the behaviour of bosonic modes.
We consider the thermoelectric properties of the mixed-dimensional quantum electrodynamics of the relativistic Dirac fermion and Wilson-Fisher boson. These models are self-dual, and can form non-trivial many-body phases depending on the values of chemical potential, background magnetic field and the electromagnetic fine-structure constant. Using particle-vortex duality, we derive a variety of thermoelectric relations for strongly-interacting phases with classic paradigms such as the Wiedemann-Franz law and the Mott's relation in the dual weakly interacting regimes. Besides, at the self-dual po…
There are many applications in gauge theories where the usually employed framework involving gauge-dependent Green's functions leads to considerable problems. In order to overcome the difficulties invariably tied to gauge dependence, we present a manifestly gauge-invariant approach. We propose a generating functional of appropriately chosen gauge-invariant Green's functions for the bosonic sector of the standard model. Since the corresponding external sources emit one-particle states, these functions yield the same S-matrix elements as those obtained in the usual framework. We evaluate the gen…
We analyze $2+1d$ and $3+1d$ Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases of matter protected by onsite symmetry group $G$ by using dual bulk and boundary approaches. In the bulk we study an effective field theory which upon coupling to a background flat $G$ gauge field furnishes a purely topological response theory. The response action evaluated on certain manifolds, with appropriate choice of background gauge field, defines a set of SPT topological invariants. Further, SPTs can be gauged by summing over all isomorphism classes of flat $G$ gauge fields to obtain Dijkgraaf-Witten topolo…
