If the $\ell$-adic cohomology of a projective smooth variety, defined over a local field $K$ with finite residue field $k$, is supported in codimension $\ge 1$, then every model over the ring of integers of $K$ has a $k$-rational point. For $K$ a $p$-adic field, this is math/0405318, Theorem 1.1. If the model $\sX$ is regular, one has a congruence $|\sX(k)|\equiv 1 $ modulo $|k|$ for the number of $k$-rational points 0704.1273, Theorem 1.1. The congruence is violated if one drops the regularity assumption.
In this paper, motivated by a problem posed by Barry Mazur, we show that for smooth projective varieties over the rationals, the odd cohomology groups of degree less than or equal to the dimension can be modeled by the cohomology of an abelian variety, provided the geometric coniveau is maximal. This provides an affirmative answer to Mazur's question for all uni-ruled threefolds, for instance. Concerning cohomology in degree three, we show that the image of the Abel--Jacobi map admits a distinguished model over the rationals.
We show that the framing of $2$-sequences whose generating functions are rational integrate to $3$-sequences. To do so, we give a generalization of Wolstenholme's Theorem.
We investigate necessary as well as sufficient conditions under which the Laurent series coefficients $f_{\boldsymbol{n}}$ associated to a multivariate rational function satisfy Gauss congruences, that is $f_{\boldsymbol{m}p^r} \equiv f_{\boldsymbol{m}p^{r-1}}$ modulo $p^r$. For instance, we show that these congruences hold for certain determinants of logarithmic derivatives. As an application, we completely classify rational functions $P/Q$ satisfying the Gauss congruences in the case that $Q$ is linear in each variable.
We give a reciprocity formula for a two-variable sum where the variables satisfy a linear congruence condition. We also prove that such sum is a measure of how well a rational is approximable from below and show that the reciprocity formula is a simple consequence of this fact.

Genus fields of abelian extensions of congruence rational function fields
在这篇论文的公开版本[Finite Fields and Their Applications {\bf 20}(2013)40--54]中,在该论文定理4.2的证明中存在错误。
Place the vertices of a rectangle at $\{(0, \pm 1/2), (a, \pm 1/2)\}$, where $a$ is rational. We show that if $v_3(a) = 0$, then any point $(x,y)$ that is rational distance from all four vertices of the rectangle has either $v_3(x) < 0$ or $v_3(y)<0$, where $v_3(\cdot)$ is the 3-adic valuation. The case of particular interest is the long-open four-distance problem, which asks whether such a rational distance point exists in the case $a=1$ of the unit square. For the four-distance problem, our result rules out one-fourth of all potential solutions with bounded height.
We describe a novel method for bounding the dimension $d$ of the largest simple Hecke submodule of $S_2(Γ_0(N);\mathbb{Q})$ from below. Such bounds are of interest because of their relevance to the structure of $J_0(N)$, for instance. In contrast with previous results of this kind, our bound does not rely on the equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues. Instead, it is obtained via a Hecke-compatible congruence between the target space and a space of modular forms whose Hecke eigenvalues are easily controlled. For prime levels $N\equiv 7\mod 8$ our method yields an unconditional bound of $d\ge\log…
In this paper we study special bases of certain spaces of half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. We establish a criterion for the integrality of Fourier coefficients of such bases. By using recursive relations between Hecke operators, we derive relations of Fourier coefficients of each basis element and obtain congruences of the Fourier coefficients, which extend known congruences for traces of singular moduli.
Let $X$ be a scheme of finite type over $\mathbf{Z}$. For $p \in \mathcal{P}$ the set of prime numbers, let $N_{X}(p)$ be the number of $\mathbf{F}_{p}$-points of $X/\mathbf{F}_{p}$. For fixed $n\geq 1$ and $a_{1}, \ldots, a_{n} \in \mathbf{Z}$, we study the set $\bigcap_{i=1}^{n}\lbrace p\in\mathcal{P}-Σ_{X}, N_{X}(p)\neq a_{i}\ [\bmod\ p]\rbrace$ where $Σ_{X}$ is the finite set of primes of bad reduction for $X$. In case $\dim X\leq 3$, we show the set is either empty or has positive lower-density. We also address the question of the size of the smallest prime in that set. Using sieve method…
Let $k$ be a rational congruence function field and consider an arbitrary finite separable extension $K/k$. If for each prime in $k$ ramified in $K$ we have that at least one ramification index is not divided by the characteristic of $K$, we find the genus field $\g K$, except for constants, of the extension $K/k$. In general, we describe the genus field of a global function field.
We prove a version of the Khinchine--Groshev theorem for Diophantine approximation of matrices subject to a congruence condition. The proof relies on an extension of the Dani correspondence to the quotient by a congruence subgroup. This correspondence together with a multiple ergodic theorem are used to study rational approximations in several congruence classes simultaneously. The result in this part holds in the generality of weighted approximation but is restricted to simple approximation functions.
In this paper, based on Serre's $p$-adic family of Eisenstein series, we prove a general family of congruences for Eisenstein series $G_k$ in the form $$ \sum_{i=1}^n g_i(p)G_{f_i(p)}\equiv g_0(p)\mod p^N, $$ where $f_1(t),\ldots,f_n(t)\in\mathbb{Z}[t]$ are non-constant integer polynomials with positive leading coefficients and $g_0(t),\ldots,g_n(t)\in\mathbb{Q}(t)$ are rational functions. This generalizes the classical von Staudt-Clausen's and Kummer's congruences of Eisenstein series, and also yields some new congruences.
There are many families of functions on partitions, such as the shifted symmetric functions, for which the corresponding q-brackets are quasimodular forms. We extend these families so that the corresponding q-brackets are quasimodular for a congruence subgroup. Moreover, we find subspaces of these families for which the q-bracket is a modular form. These results follow from the properties of Taylor coefficients of strictly meromorphic quasi-Jacobi forms around rational lattice points.
Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $a$ be a rational $p$-adic integer, using WZ method we establish the congruences modulo $p^3$ for $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1} \binom ak\binom{-1-a}k\binom{2k}k\frac {w(k)}{4^k},$$ where $$w(k)=1,\frac 1{k+1},\frac 1{(k+1)^2},\frac 1{(k+1)^3},\frac 1{2k-1},\frac 1{k+2}, \frac 1{k+3}, k,k^2,k^3,\frac 1{a+k},\frac 1{a+k-1}.$$ As consequences, taking $a=-\frac 12,-\frac 13,-\frac 14,-\frac 16$ we deduce many congruences modulo $p^3$ and so solve some conjectures posed by the author earlier.
We give a survey of Denef's rationality theorem on $p$-adic integrals, its uniform in $p$ versions, the relevant model theory, and a number of applications to counting subgroups of finitely generated nilpotent groups and conjugacy classes in congruence quotients of Chevalley groups over rings of integers of local fields. We then state results on analytic properties of Euler products of such $p$-adic integrals over all $p$, and an application to counting conjugacy classes in congruence quotients of certain algebraic groups over the rationals. We then briefly discuss zeta functions arising from …
We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.
Seminal works by Birch and Ihara gave formulas for the $m$th power moments of the traces of Frobenius endomorphisms of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ for primes $p \geq 5$. Recent works by Kaplan and Petrow generalized these results to the setting of elliptic curves that contain a subgroup isomorphic to a fixed finite abelian group $A$. We revisit these formulas and determine a simple expression for the zeta function $Z_p(A; t)$, the generating function for these $m$th power moments. In particular, we find that \[ Z_p(A;t) = \frac{\widehat{Z}_p(A; t)}{\displaystyle \prod_{a \in \textrm{…
In this note, we give an elementary proof of the following classical fact. Any positive definite ternary quadratic form over the rational numbers fails to represent infinitely many positive integers. For any ternary quadratic form (positive definite or indefinite), our method constructs certain congruence classes whose elements, up to a square factor, are the only elements not represented over the rational numbers by that form. In the case of a positive definite ternary form, we show that these classes are non-empty. This shows that the minimum number of variables in a positive definite quadra…
