A classical problem due to Abel is to determine if a differential equation $y'=ηy$ admits a non-trivial solution $y$ algebraic over $\mathbb C(x)$ when $η$ is a given algebraic function over $\mathbb C(x)$. Risch designed an algorithm that, given $η$, determines whether there exists an algebraic solution or not. In this paper, we adopt a different point of view when $η$ admits a Puiseux expansion with rational coefficients at some point in $\mathbb C\cup \{\infty\}$, which can be assumed to be 0 without loss of generality. We prove the following arithmetic characterization: there exists a non-trivial algebraic solution of $y'=ηy$ if and only if the coefficients of the Puiseux expansion of $xη(x)$ at $0$ satisfy Gauss congruences for almost all prime numbers. We then apply our criterion to hypergeometric series: we completely determine the equations $y'=ηy$ with an algebraic solution when $xη(x)$ is an algebraic hypergeometric series with rational parameters, and this enables us to prove a prediction Golyshev made using the theory of motives. We also present three other applications, in particular to diagonals of rational fractions and to directed two-dimensional walks.

There are classical congruences between the class number of an imaginary quadratic field and a Bernoulli number or an Euler number. Under the BSD conjecture, Onishi obtained an elliptic generalization of these congruences, which gives congruences between the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of certain elliptic curves with CM by the Gauss integers ring and Mordell-Weil rank 0, and a coefficient of power series expansion of an elliptic function associated to Gauss integers ring. In this paper, we provide Onishi's type congruences for the Eisenstein integers case.
This work is a sequel of a previous work of one of the authors (Y.Ô), which treated certain congruence relation between an elliptic Gauss sum and a coefficient of power series expansion at the origin of the lemniscate sine function. We extend the previous result (in \cite{O}) which concerned only for non-vanishing elliptic Gauss sums. We give new congruence relations between power series coefficients of the lemniscate cosine function, which hold if and only if the corresponding elliptic Gauss sum vanishes.
A primitive root modulo an integer $n$ is the generator of the multiplicative group of integers modulo $n$. Gauss proved that for any prime number $p$ greater than $3$, the sum of its primitive roots is congruent to $1$ modulo $p$ while its product is congruent to $μ(p-1)$ modulo $p$, where $μ$ is the Möbius function. In this paper, we will generalize these two interesting congruences and give the congruences of the sum and the product of integers with the same index modulo $n$.
We prove that congruences of the cogrowth sequence in a unitriangular group UT$(m, \Bbb Z)$ are undecidable. This is in contrast with abelian groups, where the congruences of the cogrowth sequence are decidable. As an application, we conclude that there is no algorithm to present the cogrowth series as the diagonal of a rational function.
We use the arithmetic of ideals in orders to parameterize the roots $μ\pmod m$ of the polynomial congruence $F(μ) \equiv 0 \pmod m$, $F(X) \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ monic, irreducible and degree $d$. Our parameterization generalizes Gauss's classic parameterization of the roots of quadratic congruences using binary quadratic forms, which had previously only been extended to the cubic polynomial $F(X) = X^3 - 2$. We show that only a special class of ideals are needed to parameterize the roots $μ\pmod m$, and that in the cubic setting, $d = 3$, general ideals correspond to pairs of roots $μ_1 \pmod{m_1…
Originally conjectured unpublished by Grothendieck, then formulated precisely by Katz, the $p$-curvature conjecture is a local-global principle for algebraic differential equations. It is at present open, though various cases are known. Katz subsequently proved this conjecture in a wide range of cases, for differential equations corresponding to the Gauss-Manin connection on algebraic de Rham cohomology. This dissertation addresses the non-abelian analogue of Katz' theorem, in the sense of Simpson's non-abelian Hodge theory, surveyed by Simpson and later developed in characteristic $p$ by Ogus…
