We show that the number of rational points on the fibres of a proper morphism of smooth varieties over a finite field k whose generic fibre has a ``trival'' Chow group of zero cycles is congruent to 1 mod |k|. As a consequence we prove that there is a rational point on any degeneration of a smooth proper rationally chain connected variety over a finite field. We also obtain a generalisation of the Chevalley-Warning theorem.
We give a positive answer to the questions 4.4 on Hodge type and 4.2 on divisibility of the eigenvalues of Frobenius of the article by N. Fakhruddin and C. S. Rajan (NT/0402230).
Wan conjectures that if $X$ and $Y$ form a strong mirror pair of Calabi-Yau varieties over a finite field $F_q$ with $q$ elements, then X and Y have the same number of $F_{q^k}$-rational points modulo $q^k$. We prove this conjecture under the condition that $Y$ can be obtained from $X$ through quotient construction.
In this paper we study the reduction of PEL-Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups of signature (n-1,1) in the inert and unramified case. We describe the Newton polygon and the Ekedahl-Oort stratification. We further study the associated moduli space of isogenies and use a variant of the local model to give a generic description. As an application we prove a conjecture of Blasius und Rogawski about the congruence relation if the integer n is even.
In these notes I proved the Chai-Faltings version of Eichler-Shimura congruence relation for simple GSpin Shimura varieties. This extends the results by Bueltel, Wedhorn and Koskivirta.
Given a proper family of varieties over a smooth base, with smooth total space and general fibre, all over a finite field k with q elements, we show that a finiteness hypothesis on the Chow groups, CH_i, i=0,1,...,r, of the fibres in the family leads to congruences mod q^{r+1} for the number of rational points in all the fibres over k-rational points of the base. These hypotheses on the Chow groups are expected to hold for families of low degree intersections in many Fano varieties leading to a broad generalisation of the theorem of Ax--Katz, as well as results of the author and C. S. Rajan. A…
We investigate the average number of solutions of certain quadratic congruences. As an application, we establish Manin's conjecture for a cubic surface whose singularity type is A_5+A_1.
For given non-zero integers a,b,q we investigate the density of integer solutions (x,y) to the binary cubic congruence ax^2+by^3=0 (mod q). We use this to establish the Manin conjecture for a singular del Pezzo surface of degree 2 defined over the rationals and to examine the distribution of elliptic curves with square-free discriminant.
If the $\ell$-adic cohomology of a projective smooth variety, defined over a local field $K$ with finite residue field $k$, is supported in codimension $\ge 1$, then every model over the ring of integers of $K$ has a $k$-rational point. For $K$ a $p$-adic field, this is math/0405318, Theorem 1.1. If the model $\sX$ is regular, one has a congruence $|\sX(k)|\equiv 1 $ modulo $|k|$ for the number of $k$-rational points 0704.1273, Theorem 1.1. The congruence is violated if one drops the regularity assumption.
We establish estimates for the number of solutions of certain affine congruences. These estimates are then used to prove Manin's conjecture for a cubic surface split over Q and whose singularity type is D_4. This improves on a result of Browning and answers a problem posed by Tschinkel.
We show that there is no simple congruence formula for the number of points of the mod p reduction of a regular model of a smooth proper variety defined over a local field with $\ell$-adic cohomology supported in codimension $\ge κ$.
We study how the systole of principal congruence coverings of a Hilbert modular variety grows when the degree of the covering goes to infinity. We prove that given a Hilbert modular variety $M$ of real dimension $2n$, the sequence of principal congruence coverings $M_{I}$ eventually satisfies $$sysπ_{1}(M_{I})\geq \frac{4}{3\sqrt{n}}\log(vol(M_{I}))-c,$$ where $c$ is a constant independent of $M_{I}$.
We show that the framing of $2$-sequences whose generating functions are rational integrate to $3$-sequences. To do so, we give a generalization of Wolstenholme's Theorem.
We investigate necessary as well as sufficient conditions under which the Laurent series coefficients $f_{\boldsymbol{n}}$ associated to a multivariate rational function satisfy Gauss congruences, that is $f_{\boldsymbol{m}p^r} \equiv f_{\boldsymbol{m}p^{r-1}}$ modulo $p^r$. For instance, we show that these congruences hold for certain determinants of logarithmic derivatives. As an application, we completely classify rational functions $P/Q$ satisfying the Gauss congruences in the case that $Q$ is linear in each variable.
Let $V$ be an absolutely irreducible affine variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$. A Lehmer point on $V$ is a point whose coordinates satisfy some prescribed congruence conditions, and a visible point is one whose coordinates are relatively prime. Asymptotic results for the number of Lehmer points and visible points on $V$ are obtained, and the distribution of visible points into different congruence classes is investigated.
We give a reciprocity formula for a two-variable sum where the variables satisfy a linear congruence condition. We also prove that such sum is a measure of how well a rational is approximable from below and show that the reciprocity formula is a simple consequence of this fact.
Let A be a CM abelian variety defined over a number field K. We compute congruence relations on units in fields generated by adjoining torsion points of A to K. For elliptic curves, congruence relations of the type we compute were used in the proof of the Coates-Wiles theorem. In general, we compute congruence relations on exterior products of units in division fields. This result seems to fit more naturally into the framework of the Stark/Rubin conjectures.
We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.
We study the arithmetic aspects of the finite group of extensions of abelian varieties defined over a number field. In particular, we establish relations with special values of L-functions and congruences between modular forms.
We report on progress in the qualitative study of rational points on rationally connected varieties over number fields, also examining integral points, zero-cycles, and non-rationally connected varieties. One of the main objectives is to highlight and explain the many recent interactions with analytic number theory.
We investigate Fano varieties defined over a number field that contain subvarieties whose number of rational points of bounded height is comparable to the total number on the variety.
We use birational geometry to show that the existence of rational points on proper rationally connected varieties over fields of characteristic $0$ is a consequence of the existence of rational points on terminal Fano varieties. We discuss several consequences of this result, especially in relation to the $C_1$-conjecture. We also provide evidence that supports the conjecture in dimension $3$ for $C_1$ fields of characteristic $0$.
Let $Z$ be a projective geometrically integral algebraic variety. This paper is concerned with estimating the number of rational points on $Z$ which have height at most $B$. The bounds obtained are uniform in varieties of fixed degree and fixed dimension, and are essentially best possible for varieties of degree at least six.
We consider the problem of counting the number of varieties in a family over a number field which contain a rational point. In particular, for products of Brauer-Severi varieties and closely related counting functions associated to Brauer group elements. Using harmonic analysis on toric varieties, we provide a positive answer to a question of Serre on such counting functions in some cases. We also formulate some conjectures on generalisations of Serre's problem.
In this paper we prove a formula for the number of rational points of bounded height relative to all the generators of the cone of effective divisor for a toric variety over a number field.
We study zero cycles on rationally connected varieties defined over characteristic zero Laurent fields with algebraically closed residue fields. We show that the degree map induces an isomorphism for rationally connected threefolds defined over such fields. In general, the degree map is an isomorphism if rationally connected varieties defined over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero satisfy the integral Hodge/Tate conjecture for one cycles, or if the Tate conjecture is true for divisor classes on surfaces defined over finite fields. To prove these results, we introduce technique…
We introduce a basis of rational polynomial-like functions $P_0,\ldots,P_{n-1}$ for the free module of functions $Z/nZ\to Z/mZ$. We then characterize the subfamily of congruence preserving functions as the set of linear combinations of the functions $lcm(k)\,P_k$ where $lcm(k)$ is the least common multiple of $2,\ldots,k$ (viewed in $Z/mZ$). As a consequence, when $n\geq m$, the number of such functions is independent of $n$.

In the published version of this paper [Finite Fields and Their Applications {\bf 20} (2013) 40--54], there is an error in the proof of Theorem 4.2 of the paper. Here we correct the error and give the right statments for Theorems 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 We give a construction of genus fields for congruence function fields. First we consider the cyclotomic function field case following the ideas of Leopoldt and then the general case. As applications we give explicitly the genus fields of Kummer, Artin--Schreier and cyclic $p$--extensions. Kummer extensions were obtained previously by G. Peng and Artin…
In a previous paper {GN2} an effective solution of the lattice point counting problem in general domains in semisimple S-algebraic groups and affine symmetric varieties was established. The method relies on the mean ergodic theorem for the action of G on G/Gamma, and implies uniformity in counting over families of lattice subgroups admitting a uniform spectral gap. In the present paper we extend some methods developed in {NS} and use them to establish several useful consequences of this property, including : Effective upper bounds on lifting for solutions of congruences in affine homogeneous v…
We prove Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for all surjective endomorphisms on every smooth rationally connected variety admitting an int-amplified endomorphism.
A sieve for rational points on suitable varieties is developed, together with applications to counting rational points in thin sets, the number of varieties in a family which are everywhere locally soluble, and to the notion of friable rational points with respect to divisors. In the special case of quadrics, sharper estimates are obtained by developing a version of the Selberg sieve for rational points.
Place the vertices of a rectangle at $\{(0, \pm 1/2), (a, \pm 1/2)\}$, where $a$ is rational. We show that if $v_3(a) = 0$, then any point $(x,y)$ that is rational distance from all four vertices of the rectangle has either $v_3(x) < 0$ or $v_3(y)<0$, where $v_3(\cdot)$ is the 3-adic valuation. The case of particular interest is the long-open four-distance problem, which asks whether such a rational distance point exists in the case $a=1$ of the unit square. For the four-distance problem, our result rules out one-fourth of all potential solutions with bounded height.
We prove several results on the number of rational points on open subsets of Kummer varieties of arbitrary dimension. Some of our results are unconditional, and others depend on the Parity Conjecture (a corollary of the Conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer). As examples, we show that (conditional on the Parity Conjecture) all odd-dimension Kummer varieties over Q which are quotients of absolutely simple abelian varieties have dense rational points, and we construct an infinite family of K3 surfaces with dense rational points.
Using Dwork's theory, we prove a broad generalisation of his famous p-adic formal congruences theorem. This enables us to prove certain p-adic congruences for the generalized hypergeometric series with rational parameters; in particular, they hold for any prime number p and not only for almost all primes. Along the way, using Christol's functions, we provide an explicit formula for the "Eisenstein constant" of any globally bounded hypergeometric series with rational parameters. As an application of these results, we obtain an arithmetic statement of a new type concerning the integrality of Tay…
We describe a novel method for bounding the dimension $d$ of the largest simple Hecke submodule of $S_2(Γ_0(N);\mathbb{Q})$ from below. Such bounds are of interest because of their relevance to the structure of $J_0(N)$, for instance. In contrast with previous results of this kind, our bound does not rely on the equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues. Instead, it is obtained via a Hecke-compatible congruence between the target space and a space of modular forms whose Hecke eigenvalues are easily controlled. For prime levels $N\equiv 7\mod 8$ our method yields an unconditional bound of $d\ge\log…
In this paper, we consider Abelian varieties over function fields that arise as twists of Abelian varieties by cyclic covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. Then, in terms of Prym varieties associated to the cyclic covers, we prove a structure theorem on their Mordell-Weil group. Our results give an explicit method for construction of elliptic curves, hyper- and super-elliptic Jacobians that have large ranks over function fields of certain varieties.
In this paper we use the framework of automatic sequences to study combinatorial sequences modulo prime powers. Given a sequence whose generating function is the diagonal of a rational power series, we provide a method, based on work of Denef and Lipshitz, for computing a finite automaton for the sequence modulo $p^α$, for all but finitely many primes $p$. This method gives completely automatic proofs of known results, establishes a number of new theorems for well-known sequences, and allows us to resolve some conjectures regarding the Apéry numbers. We also give a second method, which applies…
