Application of the path-integral approach to continuous measurements leads to effective Lagrangians or Hamiltonians in which the effect of the measurement is taken into account through an imaginary term. We apply these considerations to nonlinear oscillators with use of numerical computations to evaluate quantum limitations for monitoring position in such a class of systems.
We discuss a model of repeated measurements of position in a quantum system which is monitored for a finite amount of time with a finite instrumental error. In this framework we recover the optimum monitoring of a harmonic oscillator proposed in the case of an instantaneous collapse of the wavefunction into an infinite-accuracy measurement result. We also establish numerically the existence of an optimal measurement strategy in the case of a nonlinear system. This optimal strategy is completely defined by the spectral properties of the nonlinear system.
Monitoring photon quadratures and free masses are useful tools to detect small disturbances such as gravitational waves. Here we report a large class of states for photon quadratures and free masses potentially useful for this purpose: (1)'generic coherent states' (GCS) of photons, whose width is independent of time and uncertainty product $σ(x) σ(p) $ is arbitrarily large (a generalization of the minimum uncertainty Schrödinger coherent states and (2) `squeezed generic contractive states' (SGCS) for photons and free masses (a generalization of the Yuen states \cite{Yuen}) whose width decreases…
There are heuristic arguments proposing that the accuracy of monitoring position of a free mass $m$ is limited by the standard quantum limit (SQL):$σ^2 (X(t)) \geq σ^2 (X(0)) +(t^2/m^2) σ^2 (P(0))\geq \hbar t/m$, where $σ^2 (X(t))$ and $σ^2 (P(t))$ denote variances of the Heisenberg representation position and momentum operators. Yuen discovered that there are contractive states for which this result is incorrect. Here I prove universally valid rigorous quantum limits (RQL) viz. rigorous upper and lower bounds on $σ^2 (X(t))$ in terms of $σ^2 (X(0))$ and $σ^2 (P(0))$ for a free mass, and for a…
We consider a particle in harmonic oscillator potential, whose position is periodically measured with an instrument of finite precision. We show that the distribution of the measured positions tends to a limiting distribution when the number of measurements tends to infinity. We derive the expression for the limiting position distribution and validate it with numerical simulation.
The von Neumann interaction between a particle and an apparatus, both of arbitrary mass, has been considered in the measurement of the position of a simple harmonic oscillator acted on by an external force. When the measurement has finite duration, both the motion of the pointer and the oscillator influence the result of the measurement. Provided that the oscillator is in an eigenstate of its position at the start of the measurement, the pointer will indicate the arithmetic average between the initial and final position of the particle with an added term which depends on the duration of the me…
The relativistic quantum dynamics of the generalized Klein-Gordon (KG) oscillator having position-dependent mass in the Gödel-type space-time is investigated. We have presented the generalized KG oscillator in this space-time, and discussed the effect of Cornell potential and linear potential for our considered system. The modification from the parameters of position-dependent mass and characterizing the space-time for the energy spectrums are presented.
We develop generalized coherent states for a class of nonlinear oscillators with position-dependent effective mass in the context of the Gazeau-Klauder formalism and discuss some of their properties. In order to investigate the temporal evolution we first explore the statistical properties by means of weighting distribution and the Mandel parameter. It is found that the temporal evolution of the coherent states may exhibit the phenomena of quantum revivals and fractional revivals for a particular choice of position-dependent mass oscillator.
We study the generalized harmonic oscillator which has both the position-dependent mass and the potential depending on the form of mass function in a more general framework. The explicit expressions of the eigenvalue and eigenfunction for such system are given, they have the same forms as those for the usual harmonic oscillator with constant mass. The coherent state and the its properties for the system with PDM are also discussed. We give the corresponding effective potentials for several mass functions, the systems with such potentials are isospectral to the usual harmonic oscillator.
Using ladder operators for the non-linear oscillator with position-dependent effective mass, realization of the dynamic group SU(1,1) is presented. Keeping in view the algebraic structure of the non-linear oscillator, coherent states are constructed using Barut-Girardello formalism and their basic properties are discussed. Furthermore, the statistical properties of these states are investigated by means of Mandel parameter and second order correlation function. Moreover, it is shown that in the harmonic limit, all the results obtained for the non-linear oscillator with spatially varying mass r…
$1+1$-dimensional Dirac oscillator with minimal uncertainty in position and maximal in momentum is investigated. To obtain energy spectrum SUSY QM technique is applied. It is shown that the Dirac oscillator has two branches of spectrum, the first one gives the standard spectrum of the Dirac oscillator when the parameter of deformation goes to zero and the second branch does not have nondeformed limit. Maximal momentum brings an upper bound for the energy and it gives rise to the conclusion that the energy spectrum contains a finite number of eigenvalues. We also calculate partition function fo…
In this paper, we study the dynamical properties of two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators coupled with bosonic non-Markovian environment both in position and momentum. We deduce the exact analytical master equation using Quantum State Diffusion method and give the quantum trajectory description when the control is added to the system by applying interaction between two harmonic oscillators. With numerical simulation, we compare the evolution of entanglement under different controlling effects. At last, we use nonlinear Quantum State Diffusion method to strengthen our above results by gettin…
We investigate the possibility to monitor the dynamics of an open quantum system with the help of a small probe system, coupled via dephasing coupling to the open system of interest. As an example, we consider a dissipative harmonic oscillator and a single qubit as probe system. Qubit plus oscillator are described by a finite temperature quantum master equation, where the dynamics of the whole system can be obtained analytically. We find that the short time behavior of the reduced qubit state (its coherence) provides exhaustive information on the dissipative dynamics of the oscillator. Observi…
We recycle Cruz et al.'s (Phys. Lett. A 369 (2007) 400) work on the classical and quantum position-dependent mass (PDM) oscillators. To elaborate on the ordering ambiguity, we properly amend some of the results reported in their work and discuss the classical and quantum mechanical correspondence for the PDM harmonic oscillators. We use a point canonical transformation and show that one unique quantum PDM oscillator Hamiltonian (consequently, one unique ordering-ambiguity parametric set j=l=-1/4 and k=-1/2) is obtained. To show that such a parametric set is not just a manifestation of the quan…
At the recent QSCP XIX, the author claimed a procedure of using a scaled Fourier transform (the scaling being determined by the detailed interaction and particle mass for a harmonic oscillator) to achieve simultaneous resolution of position and momentum greater than the standard Heisenberg value of 1/2. The procedure is, in fact, invalid for quantum mechanics. The purpose of this paper is simply to give the correct analysis of the uncertainty product, thereby clarifying the error made.
We study the classical and quantum oscillator in the context of a non-additive (deformed) displacement operator, associated with a position-dependent effective mass, by means of the supersymmetric formalism. From the supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians and the shape invariance technique we obtain the eigenstates and the eigenvalues along with the ladders operators, thus showing a preservation of the supersymmetric structure in terms of the deformed counterpartners. The deformed space in supersymmetry allows to characterize position-dependent effective mass, uniform field interactions and to ob…
The exact solvability and impressive pedagogical implementation of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators make it a problem of great physical relevance and the most fundamental one in quantum mechanics. So would be the position dependent mass oscillator for the position dependent mass quantum mechanics. We, hereby, construct the position dependent mass creation and annihilation operators for the position dependent mass oscillator via two different approaches. First, via von Roos position dependent mass Hamiltonian and show that the commutation relation between the position…
We show that the position operator for a class of $f$-deformed oscillators has a fractal spectrum, homeomorphic to the Cantor set, via a unitary transformation to Harper's model. The class corresponds to a choice of ergodic operators for the deformation function. Hofstadter's butterfly is plotted by direct diagonalization of a position operator with an originally vanishing diagonal. This is equivalent to a one-dimensional hamiltonian without potential.
We revisit the problem of the deformed oscillator with position-dependent mass [da Costa et al., J. Math. Phys. {\bf 62}, 092101 (2021)] in the classical and quantum formalisms, by introducing the effect of the mass function in both kinetic and potential energies. The resulting Hamiltonian is mapped into a Morse oscillator by means of a point canonical transformation from the usual phase space $(x, p)$ to a deformed one $(x_γ, Π_γ)$. Similar to the Morse potential, the deformed oscillator presents bound trajectories in phase space corresponding to an anharmonic oscillatory motion in classical …
We address the consequences of backaction in the unidirectional coupling of two cascaded open quantum subsystems connected to the same reservoir at different spatial locations. In the spirit of [H. J. Carmichael, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2273 (1993)], the second subsystem is a two-level atom, while the first transforms from a driven empty cavity to a perturbative QED configuration and ultimately to a driven Jaynes-Cummings (JC) oscillator through a varying light-matter coupling strength. For our purpose, we appeal at first to the properties of resonance fluorescence in the statistical description …
We study how to understand the complex coordinates involved in the non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric systems. We explore a PT-symmetric oscillator model to show that the entire information on the complex position is attainable. Its real part is from the observation while its imaginary part is from the non-Hermiticity parameter. We also propose a new complex extension of P-transformation and T-transformation (the `parity' and `time reflection' respectively). Particularly, the P-transformation realizes the left-right reflection in the complex plane.
Dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) is the name assigned to the process of generating quanta from vacuum due to an accelerated motion of macroscopic neutral bodies (mirrors) or time-modulation of cavity material properties, as well as the simulation of such processes. Here I review the theoretical results on the detection of DCE using intracavity quantum detectors, such as multi-level atoms, atomic networks and harmonic oscillators. I also stress the mathematical equivalence of this problem to the physics of optical parametric oscillators interacting with atoms or quantum wells, studied in Quantum …
We construct a Darboux transformation for a class of two-dimensional Dirac systems at zero energy. Our starting equation features a position-dependent mass, a matrix potential, and an additional degree of freedom that can be interpreted either as a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane or a generalized Dirac oscillator interaction. We obtain a number of Darbouxtransformed Dirac equations for which the zero energy solutions are exactly known.
We study the $(1+1)$ dimensional generalized Dirac oscillator with a position-dependent mass. In particular, bound states with zero energy as well as non zero energy have been obtained for suitable choices of the mass function/oscillator interaction. It has also been shown that in the presence of an electric field, bound states exist if the magnitude of the electric field does not exceed a critical value.
We propose a protocol for quantum state tomography of nonclassical states in optomechanical systems. Using a parametric drive, the procedure overcomes the challenges of weak optomechanical coupling, poor detection efficiency, and thermal noise to enable high efficiency homodyne measurement. Our analysis is based on the analytic description of the generalized measurement that is performed when optomechanical position measurement competes with thermal noise and a parametric drive. The proposed experimental procedure is numerically simulated in realistic parameter regimes, which allows us to show…
We study complexified Harmonic Oscillator with a position-dependent mass, termed as Complex Exotic Oscillator (CEO). The complexification induces a gauge invariance [19,11]. The role of PT -symmetry is discussed from the perspective of classical trajectories of CEO for real energy. Some trajectories of CEO are similar to those for the particle in a quartic potential in the complex domain [10, 32].
We present an exact solution of a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position. The free Hamiltonian of the proposed model has the form of the BenDaniel--Duke kinetic energy operator. The position-dependency of the mass and the angular frequency is such that the homogeneous nature of the harmonic oscillator force constant $k$ and hence the regular harmonic oscillator potential is preserved. As a consequence thereof, a quantization of the confinement parameter is observed. It is shown that th…
A generalized non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonian is proposed that consists of additional linear terms which break PT-symmetry explicitly. The model is put into an equivalent Hermitian form by means of a similarity transformation and the criterion of N-fold supersymmetry with a position-dependent mass is shown to reside in it.
The phase space representation for a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass is constructed. We have found the Husimi distribution function for the stationary states of the oscillator model under consideration for both cases without and with the applied external homogeneous field. The obtained function is expressed through the double sum of the parabolic cylinder function. Different special cases and the limit relations are discussed, too.
By using a point canonical transformation starting from the constant-mass Schrödinger equation for the isotonic potential, it is shown that a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent mass in the BenDaniel-Duke setting and the same spectrum as the standard harmonic oscillator can be easily constructed and extended to a semiconfined shifted harmonic oscillator, which could result from the presence of a uniform gravitational field. A further generalization is proposed by considering a $m$-dependent position-dependent mass for $0<m<2$ and deriving the associated semiconfine…
We discuss the positional fluctuations of a quantum harmonic oscillator in a heat bath. Analytic expressions are given for the probability distribution functions of the oscillator position in general and limiting (classical and ground state) cases.
To lowest order of perturbation theory we show that an equivalence can be established between a $\cal PT$-symmetric generalized quartic anharmonic oscillator model and a Hermitian position-dependent mass Hamiltonian $h$. An important feature of $h$ is that it reveals a domain of couplings where the quartic potential could be attractive, vanishing or repulsive. We also determine the associated physical quantities.
In position dependent mass (PDM) problems, the quantum dynamics of the associated systems have been understood well in the literature for particular orderings. However, no efforts seem to have been made to solve such PDM problems for general orderings to obtain a global picture. In this connection, we here consider the general ordered quantum Hamiltonian of an interesting position dependent mass problem, namely the Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillator, and try to solve the quantum problem for all possible orderings including Hermitian and non-Hermitian ones. The other interesting point in our study i…
The solving of the Schrodinger equation for a position-dependent mass quantum system is studied in two ways. First, it is found the interaction which must be applied on a mass m(x) in order to supply it with a particular spectrum of energies. Second, given a specific potential V(x) acting on the mass m(x), the related spectrum is found. The method of solution is applied to a wide class of position-dependent mass oscillators and the corresponding coherent states are constructed. The analytical expressions of such position-dependent mass coherent states preserve the functional structure of the G…
We analyze the position and momentum uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator in the context of a deformed quantum mechanics, namely, that in which the commutator between the position and momentum operators is given by [x,p]=i\hbar(1+βp^2). This deformed commutation relation leads to the minimal length uncertainty relation Δx > (\hbar/2)(1/Δp +βΔp), which implies that Δx ~ 1/Δp at small Δp while Δx ~ Δp at large Δp. We find that the uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the normal harmonic oscillator (m>0), derived in Ref. [1], only populate the Δx ~ 1/Δp branch.…
We study the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide, in which two-level atoms in spatial superpositions are embedded. We find that the transmission of the photon can be used as a non-destructive probe for coherence of the superposition. The protocol proposed is shown to be independent of the distance between the wells in which the atoms are trapped. Furthermore, we show that by looking at the transmission in a suitable regime, a maximally entangled state can be post-selected from an unknown superposition.
The dissipative harmonic oscillator has two representations. In the first representation the central oscillator couples with its position to an oscillator bath. In the second one it couples with its momentum to the bath. Both representations are related by a unitary transformation. If the central oscillator couples with its position and momentum to two independent baths, no such unitary transformation exists. We discuss two possible models of this type and their physical relevance.
Some of the most enduring questions in physics--including the quantum measurement problem and the quantization of gravity--involve the interaction of a quantum system with a classical environment. Two linearly coupled harmonic oscillators provide a simple, exactly soluble model for exploring such interaction. Even the ground state of a pair of identical oscillators exhibits effects on the quantum nature of one oscillator, e.g., a diminution of position uncertainty, and an increase in momentum uncertainty and uncertainty product, from their unperturbed values. Interaction between quantum and cl…
We consider canonically conjugated generalized space and linear momentum operators $\hat{x}_q$ and $ \hat{p}_q$ in quantum mechanics, associated to a generalized translation operator which produces infinitesimal deformed displacements controlled by a deformation parameter $q$. A canonical transformation $(\hat{x}, \hat{p}) \rightarrow (\hat{x}_q, \hat{p}_q)$ leads the Hamiltonian of a position-dependent mass particle in usual space to another Hamiltonian of a particle with constant mass in a conservative force field of the deformed space. The equation of motion for the classical phase space $(…
The recently introduced by us two- and three-parameter ($p,q$)- and ($p,q,μ$)-deformed extensions of the Heisenberg algebra were explored under the condition of their direct link with the respective (nonstandard) deformed quantum oscillator algebras. In this paper we explore certain Hermitian Hamiltonian build in terms of non-Hermitian position and momentum operators obeying definite $η(N)$-pseudo-Hermiticity properties. A generalized nonlinear (with the coefficients depending on the excitation number operator $N$) one-mode Bogolyubov transformation is developed as main tool for the correspond…
The dynamics of states representing arbitrary N-level quantum systems, including dissipative systems, can be modelled exactly by the dynamics of classical coupled oscillators. There is a direct one-to-one correspondence between the quantum states and the positions of the oscillators. Quantum coherence, expectation values, and measurement probabilities for system observables can therefore be realized from the corresponding classical states. The time evolution of an N-level system is represented as the rotation of a real state vector in hyperspace, as previously known for density matrix states b…
We show how to construct general probabilistic theories that contain an energy observable dependent on position and momentum. The construction is in accordance with classical and quantum theory and allows for physical predictions, such as the probability distribution for position, momentum and energy. We demonstrate the construction by formulating a toy model for the harmonic oscillator that is neither classical nor quantum. The model features a discrete energy spectrum, a ground state with sharp position and momentum, an eigenstate with non-positive Wigner function as well as a state that has…
A challenge of modern physics is to investigate the quantum behavior of a bulk material object, for instance a mechanical oscillator. We have earlier demonstrated that by coupling a mechanical oscillator to the energy levels of embedded rare-earth ion dopants, it is possible to prepare such a resonator in a low phonon number state. Here, we describe how to extend this protocol in order to prepare momentum- and position squeezed states, and we analyze how the obtainable degree of squeezing depends on the initial conditions and on the coupling of the oscillator to its thermal environment.
In a recent paper by Jafarov, Nagiyev, Oste and Van der Jeugt (2020 {\sl J.\ Phys.\ A} {\bf 53} 485301), a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position, was constructed and it was shown that the confinement parameter gets quantized. By using a point canonical transformation starting from the constant-mass Schrödinger equation for the Rosen-Morse II potential, it is shown here that similar results can be easily obtained without quantizing the confinement parameter. In addition, an extension t…
Quantum hacking against discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution using modified local oscillator intensity attack with random fluctuations
We consider an extension of the real Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ by introducing a parity operator $P$ and a parameter $c$. This extended algebra is isomorphic to the Bannai-Ito algebra with two parameters equal to zero. For this algebra we classify all unitary finite-dimensional representations and show their relation with known representations of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. Moreover, we present a model for a one-dimensional finite oscillator based on the odd-dimensional representations of this algebra. For this model, the spectrum of the position operator is equidistant and coincides with the spec…
In this paper we calculate the position and momentum space information entropies for the quantum states associated with a particular physical system, i.e. the isotonic oscillator Hamiltonian. We present our results for its ground states, as well as for its excited states. We observe that the lower bound of the sum of the position and momentum entropies expressed by the Beckner, Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski (BBM) inequality is satisfied. Moreover, there exist eigenstates that exhibit squeezing in the position information entropy. In fact, entropy squeezing, which occurs in position, will be …
The bound-state solutions and the su(1,1) description of the $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillator, the Morse and the $D$-dimensional radial Coulomb Schrödinger equations are reviewed in a unified way using the point canonical transformation method. It is established that the spectrum generating su(1,1) algebra for the first problem is converted into a potential algebra for the remaining two. This analysis is then extended to Schrödinger equations containing some position-dependent mass. The deformed su(1,1) construction recently achieved for a $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillator i…
The interest of quadratic algebras for position-dependent mass Schrödinger equations is highlighted by constructing spectrum generating algebras for a class of d-dimensional radial harmonic oscillators with $d \ge 2$ and a specific mass choice depending on some positive parameter $α$. Via some minor changes, the one-dimensional oscillator on the line with the same kind of mass is included in this class. The existence of a single unitary irreducible representation belonging to the positive-discrete series type for $d \ge 2$ and of two of them for d=1 is proved. The transition to the constant-ma…
We discuss the separability of the position-dependent mass Hamiltonian in cylindrical coordinates in the framework of a radial power-law position-dependent mass. We consider two particular radial mass settings; a harmonic oscillator type, and a Coulombic type. We subject the radial harmonic oscillator type mass to a radial harmonic oscillator potential and the radial Coulombic mass to a radial Coulombic potential. Azimuthal symmetry is assumed and spectral signatures of various z-dependent interaction potentials are reported.
The harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian, when augmented by a non-Hermitian $\cal{PT}$-symmetric part, can be transformed into a Hermitian Hamiltonian. This is achieved by introducing a metric which, in general, renders other observables such as the usual momentum or position as non-Hermitian operators. The metric depends on one real parameter, the full range of which is investigated. The explicit functional dependence of the metric and each associated Hamiltonian is given. A specific choice of this parameter determines a specific combination of position and momentum as being an observable; this ca…
We consider the problem of removal of ordering ambiguity in position dependent mass quantum systems characterized by a generalized position dependent mass Hamiltonian which generalizes a number of Hermitian as well as non-Hermitian ordered forms of the Hamiltonian. We implement point canonical transformation method to map one-dimensional time-independent position dependent mass Schr$ö$dinger equation endowed with potentials onto constant mass counterparts which are considered to be exactly solvable. We observe that a class of mass functions and the corresponding potentials give rise to solutio…
We consider a single copy of a quantum particle moving in a potential and show that it is possible to monitor its complete wave function by only continuously measuring its position. While we assume that the potential is known, no information is available about its state initially. In order to monitor the wave function, an estimate of the wave function is propagated due to the influence of the potential and continuously updated according to the results of the position measurement. We demonstrate by numerical simulations that the estimation reaches arbitrary values of accuracy below 100 percent …
