We study complexified Harmonic Oscillator with a position-dependent mass, termed as Complex Exotic Oscillator (CEO). The complexification induces a gauge invariance [19,11]. The role of PT -symmetry is discussed from the perspective of classical trajectories of CEO for real energy. Some trajectories of CEO are similar to those for the particle in a quartic potential in the complex domain [10, 32].
A generalized non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonian is proposed that consists of additional linear terms which break PT-symmetry explicitly. The model is put into an equivalent Hermitian form by means of a similarity transformation and the criterion of N-fold supersymmetry with a position-dependent mass is shown to reside in it.
To lowest order of perturbation theory we show that an equivalence can be established between a $\cal PT$-symmetric generalized quartic anharmonic oscillator model and a Hermitian position-dependent mass Hamiltonian $h$. An important feature of $h$ is that it reveals a domain of couplings where the quartic potential could be attractive, vanishing or repulsive. We also determine the associated physical quantities.
The solving of the Schrodinger equation for a position-dependent mass quantum system is studied in two ways. First, it is found the interaction which must be applied on a mass m(x) in order to supply it with a particular spectrum of energies. Second, given a specific potential V(x) acting on the mass m(x), the related spectrum is found. The method of solution is applied to a wide class of position-dependent mass oscillators and the corresponding coherent states are constructed. The analytical expressions of such position-dependent mass coherent states preserve the functional structure of the G…
The exact solvability and impressive pedagogical implementation of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators make it a problem of great physical relevance and the most fundamental one in quantum mechanics. So would be the position dependent mass oscillator for the position dependent mass quantum mechanics. We, hereby, construct the position dependent mass creation and annihilation operators for the position dependent mass oscillator via two different approaches. First, via von Roos position dependent mass Hamiltonian and show that the commutation relation between the position…
We show that the position operator for a class of $f$-deformed oscillators has a fractal spectrum, homeomorphic to the Cantor set, via a unitary transformation to Harper's model. The class corresponds to a choice of ergodic operators for the deformation function. Hofstadter's butterfly is plotted by direct diagonalization of a position operator with an originally vanishing diagonal. This is equivalent to a one-dimensional hamiltonian without potential.
We construct a Darboux transformation for a class of two-dimensional Dirac systems at zero energy. Our starting equation features a position-dependent mass, a matrix potential, and an additional degree of freedom that can be interpreted either as a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane or a generalized Dirac oscillator interaction. We obtain a number of Darbouxtransformed Dirac equations for which the zero energy solutions are exactly known.
We present an exact solution of a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position. The free Hamiltonian of the proposed model has the form of the BenDaniel--Duke kinetic energy operator. The position-dependency of the mass and the angular frequency is such that the homogeneous nature of the harmonic oscillator force constant $k$ and hence the regular harmonic oscillator potential is preserved. As a consequence thereof, a quantization of the confinement parameter is observed. It is shown that th…
By using a point canonical transformation starting from the constant-mass Schrödinger equation for the isotonic potential, it is shown that a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent mass in the BenDaniel-Duke setting and the same spectrum as the standard harmonic oscillator can be easily constructed and extended to a semiconfined shifted harmonic oscillator, which could result from the presence of a uniform gravitational field. A further generalization is proposed by considering a $m$-dependent position-dependent mass for $0<m<2$ and deriving the associated semiconfine…
We describe a quantum system consisting of a one-dimensional linear chain of n identical harmonic oscillators coupled by a nearest neighbor interaction. Two boundary conditions are taken into account: periodic boundary conditions (where the nth oscillator is coupled back to the first oscillator) and fixed wall boundary conditions (where the first oscillator and the $n$th oscillator are coupled to a fixed wall). The two systems are characterized by their Hamiltonian. For their quantization, we treat these systems as Wigner Quantum Systems (WQS), allowing more solutions than just the canonical q…
We study the $(1+1)$ dimensional generalized Dirac oscillator with a position-dependent mass. In particular, bound states with zero energy as well as non zero energy have been obtained for suitable choices of the mass function/oscillator interaction. It has also been shown that in the presence of an electric field, bound states exist if the magnitude of the electric field does not exceed a critical value.
The classical and quantum formalism for a p-adic and adelic harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency is developed, and general formulae for main theoretical quantities are obtained. In particular, the p-adic propagator is calculated, and the existence of a simple vacuum state as well as adelic quantum dynamics is shown. Space discreteness and p-adic quantum-mechanical phase are noted.
In the context of some deformed canonical commutation relations leading to isotropic nonzero minimal uncertainties in the position coordinates, a Dirac equation is exactly solved for the first time, namely that corresponding to the Dirac oscillator. Supersymmetric quantum mechanical and shape-invariance methods are used to derive both the energy spectrum and wavefunctions in the momentum representation. As for the conventional Dirac oscillator, there are neither negative-energy states for $E=-1$, nor symmetry between the $l = j - {1/2}$ and $l = j + {1/2}$ cases, both features being connected …
The phase space representation for a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass is constructed. We have found the Husimi distribution function for the stationary states of the oscillator model under consideration for both cases without and with the applied external homogeneous field. The obtained function is expressed through the double sum of the parabolic cylinder function. Different special cases and the limit relations are discussed, too.
In the Madelung-Bohm approach to quantum mechanics, we consider a (time dependent) phase that depends quadratically on position and show that it leads to a Bohm potential that corresponds to a time dependent harmonic oscillator, provided the time dependent term in the phase obeys an Ermakov equation.
A general non-local point transformation for position-dependent mass Lagrangians and their mapping into a "constant unit-mass" Lagrangians in the generalized coordinates is introduced. The conditions on the invariance of the related Euler-Lagrange equations are reported. The harmonic oscillator linearization of the PDM Euler-Lagrange equations is discussed through some illustrative examples including harmonic oscillators, shifted harmonic oscillators, a quadratic nonlinear oscillator, and a Morse-type oscillator. The Mathews-Lakshmanan nonlinear oscillators are reproduced and some "shifted" Ma…
We consider an extension of the real Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ by introducing a parity operator $P$ and a parameter $c$. This extended algebra is isomorphic to the Bannai-Ito algebra with two parameters equal to zero. For this algebra we classify all unitary finite-dimensional representations and show their relation with known representations of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. Moreover, we present a model for a one-dimensional finite oscillator based on the odd-dimensional representations of this algebra. For this model, the spectrum of the position operator is equidistant and coincides with the spec…
We examine some nontrivial consequences that emerge from interpreting a position-dependent mass (PDM) driven Duffing oscillator in the presence of a quartic potential. The propagation dynamics is studied numerically and sensi- tivity to the PDM-index is noted. Remarkable transitions from a limit cycle to chaos through period doubling and from a chaotic to a regular motion through intermediate periodic and chaotic routes are demonstrated.
The quantum version of a non-linear oscillator, previouly analyzed at the classical level, is studied. This is a problem of quantization of a system with position-dependent mass of the form $m={(1+λx^2)}^{-1}$ and with a $\la$-dependent nonpolynomial rational potential. This $\la$-dependent system can be considered as a deformation of the harmonic oscillator in the sense that for $\la\to 0$ all the characteristics of the linear oscillator are recovered. Firstly, the $\la$-dependent Schrödinger equation is exactly solved as a Sturm-Liouville problem and the $\la$-dependent eigenenergies and eig…
We construct a time-dependent double well potential as an exact spectral equivalent to the explicitly time-dependent negative quartic oscillator with a time-dependent mass term. Defining the unstable anharmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on a contour in the lower-half complex plane, the resulting time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is first mapped by an exact solution of the time-dependent Dyson equation to a time-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian defined on the real axis. When unitary transformed, scaled and Fourier transformed we obtain a time-dependent double well potential bounded from belo…
We discuss the separability of the position-dependent mass Hamiltonian in cylindrical coordinates in the framework of a radial power-law position-dependent mass. We consider two particular radial mass settings; a harmonic oscillator type, and a Coulombic type. We subject the radial harmonic oscillator type mass to a radial harmonic oscillator potential and the radial Coulombic mass to a radial Coulombic potential. Azimuthal symmetry is assumed and spectral signatures of various z-dependent interaction potentials are reported.
This paper is devoted to find the exact solution of the harmonic oscillator in a position-dependent 4-dimensional noncommutative phase space. The noncommutative phase space that we consider is described by the commutation relations between coordinates and momenta: $[\hat{x}^1,\hat{x}^2]=iθ(1+ω_2 \hat x^2)$, $[\hat{p}^1,\hat{p}^2]=i\barθ$, $[\hat{x}^i,\hat{p}^j]=i\hbar_{eff}δ^{ij}$. We give an analytical method to solve the eigenvalue problem of the harmonic oscillator within this deformation algebra.
We associate the stationary harmonic oscillator with time-dependent systems exhibiting non-Hermiticity by means of point transformations. The new systems are exactly solvable, with all-real spectrum, and transit to the Hermitian configuration for the appropriate values of the involved parameters. We provide a concrete generalization of the Swanson oscillator that includes the Caldirola-Kanai model as a particular case. Explicit solutions are given in both, the classical and quantum pictures.
We construct the linear and quadratic polynomial dynamical invariants for the classical and quantum time-dependent harmonic oscillator driven by a time-dependent force. To obtain them, we use exclusively the associated equations of motion for the system. We also find an algebraic relationship between the linear and quadratic invariants at the classical and quantum level.
We consider a quantum system consisting of a one-dimensional chain of M identical harmonic oscillators with natural frequency $ω$, coupled by means of springs. Such systems have been studied before, and appear in various models. In this paper, we approach the system as a Wigner Quantum System, not imposing the canonical commutation relations, but using instead weaker relations following from the compatibility of Hamilton's equations and the Heisenberg equations. In such a setting, the quantum system allows solutions in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, with a discrete spectrum for all physic…
In a recent paper by Jafarov, Nagiyev, Oste and Van der Jeugt (2020 {\sl J.\ Phys.\ A} {\bf 53} 485301), a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position, was constructed and it was shown that the confinement parameter gets quantized. By using a point canonical transformation starting from the constant-mass Schrödinger equation for the Rosen-Morse II potential, it is shown here that similar results can be easily obtained without quantizing the confinement parameter. In addition, an extension t…
A fast harmonic oscillator is linearly coupled with a system of Ising spins that are in contact with a thermal bath, and evolve under a slow Glauber dynamics at dimensionless temperature $θ$. The spins have a coupling constant proportional to the oscillator position. The oscillator-spin interaction produces a second order phase transition at $θ=1$ with the oscillator position as its order parameter: the equilibrium position is zero for $θ>1$ and non-zero for $θ< 1$. For $θ<1$, the dynamics of this system is quite different from relaxation to equilibrium. For most initial conditions, the oscill…
We continue our previous application of supersymmetric quantum mechanical methods to eigenvalue problems in the context of some deformed canonical commutation relations leading to nonzero minimal uncertainties in position and/or momentum. Here we determine for the first time the spectrum and the eigenvectors of a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator in the presence of a uniform electric field in terms of the deforming parameters $α$, $β$. We establish that whenever there is a nonzero minimal uncertainty in momentum, i.e., for $α\ne 0$, the correction to the harmonic oscillator eigenvalues due t…
In the context of a two-parameter $(α, β)$ deformation of the canonical commutation relation leading to nonzero minimal uncertainties in both position and momentum, the harmonic oscillator spectrum and eigenvectors are determined by using techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics combined with shape invariance under parameter scaling. The resulting supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians correspond to different masses and frequencies. The exponential spectrum is proved to reduce to a previously found quadratic spectrum whenever one of the parameters $α$, $β$ vanishes, in which case shape inva…
The two-dimensional extension of the one-dimensional PDM-Lagrangians and their nonlocal point transformation mappings into constant unit-mass exactly solvable Lagrangians is introduced. The conditions on the related two-dimensional Euler-Lagrange equations' invariance are reported. The mappings from superintegrable linear oscillators into sub-superintegrable nonlinear PDM-oscillators are exemplified by, (i) a sub-superintegrable Mathews-Lakshmanan type-I PDM-oscillator, for a PDM-particle moving in a harmonic oscillator potential, (ii) a sub-superintegrable Mathews-Lakshmanan type-II PDM-oscil…
In this work, we present the analytical approach to the evaluation of the conditional measure Wiener path integral. We consider the time-dependent model parameters. We find the differential equation for the variable, determining the behavior of the harmonic as well the an-harmonic parts of the oscillator. We present the an-harmonic part of the result in the form of the operator function.
The bound-state solutions and the su(1,1) description of the $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillator, the Morse and the $D$-dimensional radial Coulomb Schrödinger equations are reviewed in a unified way using the point canonical transformation method. It is established that the spectrum generating su(1,1) algebra for the first problem is converted into a potential algebra for the remaining two. This analysis is then extended to Schrödinger equations containing some position-dependent mass. The deformed su(1,1) construction recently achieved for a $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillator i…
The interest of quadratic algebras for position-dependent mass Schrödinger equations is highlighted by constructing spectrum generating algebras for a class of d-dimensional radial harmonic oscillators with $d \ge 2$ and a specific mass choice depending on some positive parameter $α$. Via some minor changes, the one-dimensional oscillator on the line with the same kind of mass is included in this class. The existence of a single unitary irreducible representation belonging to the positive-discrete series type for $d \ge 2$ and of two of them for d=1 is proved. The transition to the constant-ma…
Using Schwinger Variational Principle we solve the problem of quantum harmonic oscillator with time dependent frequency. Here, we do not take the usual approach which implicitly assumes an adiabatic behavior for the frequency. Instead, we propose a new solution where the frequency only needs continuity in its first derivative or to have a finite set of removable discontinuities.
In this work we address the problem of the quantization of a simple harmonic oscillator that is perturbed by a time dependent force. The approach consists of removing the perturbation by a canonical change of coordinates. Since the quantization procedure uses the classical Hamiltonian formalism as staring point, the change of variables is carried out using canonical transformations, and to transform between the quantized systems the canonical transformation is implemented as a unitary transformation mapping the states of the perturbed and unperturbed system onto each other.
A new SU(1, 1) position-dependent effective mass coherent states (PDEM CS) related to the shifted harmonic oscillator (SHO) are deduced. This is accomplished by applying a similarity transformation to the generally deformed oscillator algebra (GDOA) generators for PDEM system and construct a new set of operators which close the su(1, 1) Lie algebra, being the PDEM CS of the basis for its unitary irreducible representation. The residual potential is associated to the SHO. From the Lie algebra generators, we evaluate the uncertainty relationship for a position and momentum-like operators in the …
The superintegrability of two-dimensional Hamiltonians with a position dependent mass (pdm) is studied (the kinetic term contains a factor $m$ that depends of the radial coordinate). First, the properties of Killing vectors are studied and the associated Noether momenta are obtained. Then the existence of several families of superintegrable Hamiltonians is proved and the quadratic integrals of motion are explicitly obtained. These families include, as particular cases, some systems previously obtained making use of different approaches. We also relate the superintegrability of some of these pd…
We examine the analytical structure of the nonlinear Lienard oscillator and show that it is a bi-Hamiltonian system depending upon the choice of the coupling parameters. While one has been recently studied in the context of a quantized momentum- dependent mass system, the other Hamiltonian also reflects a similar feature in the mass function and also depicts an isotonic character. We solve for such a Hamiltonian and give the complete solution in terms of a confluent hypergeometric function.
We investigate a new model for the finite one-dimensional quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). In this setting, it is natural to present the position and momentum operators of the oscillator as odd elements of the Lie superalgebra. The model involves a parameter p (0<p<1) and an integer representation label j. In the (2j+1)-dimensional representations W_j of sl(2|1), the Hamiltonian has the usual equidistant spectrum. The spectrum of the position operator is discrete and turns out to be of the form $\pm\sqrt{k}$, where k=0,1,...,j. We construct the discrete position wave…
A harmonic oscillator linearly coupled with a linear chain of Ising spins is investigated. The $N$ spins in the chain interact with their nearest neighbours with a coupling constant proportional to the oscillator position and to $N^{-1/2}$, are in contact with a thermal bath at temperature $T$, and evolve under Glauber dynamics. The oscillator position is a stochastic process due to the oscillator-spin interaction which produces drastic changes in the equilibrium behaviour and the dynamics of the oscillator. Firstly, there is a second order phase transition at a critical temperature $T_c$ whos…
A novel exactly solvable Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent mass (PDM) describing a Coulomb problem in $D$ dimensions is obtained by extending the known duality relating the quantum $d$-dimensional oscillator and $D$-dimensional Coulomb problems in Euclidean spaces for $D = (d+2)/2$. As an intermediate step, a mapping between a quantum $d$-dimensional nonlinear oscillator of Mathews-Lakshmanan type (or oscillator in a space of constant curvature) and a quantum $D$-dimensional Coulomb-like problem in a space of nonconstant curvature is derived. It is finally reinterpreted in a PDM b…
We prove a reducibility result for a quantum harmonic oscillator in arbitrary dimensions with arbitrary frequencies perturbed by a linear operator which is a polynomial of degree two in $x_j$, $-i \partial_j$ with coefficients which depend quasiperiodically on time.
During recent years, exact solutions of position-dependent mass Schrödinger equations have inspired intense research activities, based on the use of point canonical transformations, Lie algebraic methods or supersymmetric quantum mechanical techniques. Here we highlight the interest of another approach to such problems, relying on quadratic algebras. We illustrate this point by constructing spectrum generating algebras for a class of $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillators with $d\ge2$ (including the one-dimensional oscillator on the line via some minor changes) and a specific mass choice.…
We have given a straightforward method to solve the problem of noncentral anharmonic oscillator in three dimensions. The relative propagator is presented by means of path integrals in spherical coordinates. By making an adequate change of time we were able to separate the angular motion from the radial one. The relative propagator is then exactly calculated. The energy spectrum and the corresponding wave functions are obtained.
We show that a simple modification of the Lagrangian proposed by Padmanabhan in the paper [Mod. Phys. Lett. A 33, 1830005 (2018), arXiv:1712.07328] leads to the most general dynamical invariant in [Ray and Reid, Phys. Lett. A 71, 317 (1979)]
The goal of this paper is to discuss the link between the quantum phenomenon of Anderson localization on the one hand, and the parametric instability of classical linear oscillators with stochastic frequency on the other. We show that these two problems are closely related to each other. On the base of analytical and numerical results we predict under which conditions colored parametric noise suppresses the instability of linear oscillators.
Time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillators (TDFHO's) are studied through the theory of Lie systems. We show that they are related to a certain kind of equations in the Lie group SL(2,R). Some integrability conditions appear as conditions to be able to transform such equations into simpler ones in a very specific way. As a particular application of our results we find t-dependent constants of the motion for certain one-dimensional TDFHO's. Our approach provides an unifying framework which allows us to apply our developments to all Lie systems associated with equations in SL(2,R) and to gener…
Controlled time-decaying harmonic oscillator changes the threshold of decay order of the potential functions in order to exist the physical wave operators. This threshold was first reported by Ishida and Kawamoto \cite{IK} for the non-critical case. In this paper we deal with the critical case. As for the critical case, the situation changes drastically, and much more rigorous analysis is required than that of non-critical case. We study this critical behavior and clarify the threshold by the power of the log growth of the potential functions. Consequently, this result reveals the asymptotics …
We construct a new model of the quantum oscillator, whose energy spectrum is equally-spaced and lower-bounded, whereas the spectra of position and momentum are a denumerable non-degenerate set of points in [-1,1] that depends on the deformation parameter q from (0,1). We provide its explicit wavefunctions, both in position and momentum representations, in terms of the discrete q-Hermite polynomials. We build a Hilbert space with a unique measure, where an analogue of the fractional Fourier transform is defined in order to govern the time evolution of this discrete oscillator. In the limit q to…
In this article, we formulate the study of the unitary time evolution of systems consisting of an infinite number of uncoupled time-dependent harmonic oscillators in mathematically rigorous terms. We base this analysis on the theory of a single one-dimensional time-dependent oscillator, for which we first summarize some basic results concerning the unitary implementability of the dynamics. This is done by employing techniques different from those used so far to derive the Feynman propagator. In particular, we calculate the transition amplitudes for the usual harmonic oscillator eigenstates and…
