Given the collapse hypothesis (CH) of quantum measurement, EPR-type correlations along with the hypothesis of the impossibility of superluminal communication (ISC) have the effect of globalizing gross features of the quantum formalism making them universally true. In particular, these hypotheses imply that state transformations of density matrices must be linear and that evolution which preserves purity of states must also be linear. A gedanken experiment shows that lorentz covariance along with the second law of thermodynamics imply a non-entropic version of ISC. Partial results using quantum logic suggest, given ISC and a version of CH, a connection between lorentz covariance and the covering law. These results show that standard quantum mechanics is structurally unstable, and suggest that viable relativistic alternatives must question CH. One may also speculate that some features of the hilbert-space model of quantum mechanics have their origin in space-time structure.
The assumption that wave function collapse is a real occurrence has very interesting consequences - both experimental and theoretical. Besides predicting observable deviations from linear evolution, it implies that these deviations must originate in nondeterministic effects at the elementary level in order to prevent superluminal signaling, as demonstrated by Gisin. This lack of determinism implies that information cannot be instantiated in a reproducible form in isolated microsystems (as illustrated by the No-cloning theorem). By stipulating that information is a reproducible and referential …
It has been shown that local quantum measurements and no-signaling imply quantum correlations (Barnum et al. Phys. Rev. Lett., 104, 140401 (2010)). This entails that superquantum correlations will be superluminaly signaling if we admit the validity of local quantum mechanics. We present a specific, simple instance of this situation. Our result also has the interpretation that replacing the local (trivial) dynamics in a generalized non-signaling theory (GNST) by one that admits local unitaries, results in a probability distribution that may be positive and normalization-preserving but violates …

A local, deterministic toy model for quantum mechanics is introduced and discussed. It is demonstrated that, when averaged over the hidden variables, the model produces the same predictions as quantum mechanics. In the model considered here, the dynamics depends only on the settings of the measurement device at the detection time, not how those settings were chosen. As a consequence, the model is locally causal but violates statistical independence. We show that it is neither fine-tuned nor allows for superluminal signalling.
Theories involving localized collapse allow the possibility that classical information could be obtained about quantum states without using POVMS and without allowing superluminal signalling. We can model this by extending quantum theory to include hypothetical devices that read out information about the local quantum state at a given point, defined by considering only collapses in its past light cone. Like Popescu-Rohrlich boxes, these hypothetical devices would have practical and scientific implications if realisable. These include signalling through opaque media, probing the physics of dist…
It is well-known that in the Newman-Penrose formalism the Riemann tensor can be expressed as a set of eighteen complex first-order equations, in terms of the twelve spin coefficients, known as Ricci identities. The Ricci tensor herein is determined via the Einstein equations. It is also known that the Dirac equation in a curved spacetime can be written in the Newman-Penrose formalism as a set of four first-order coupled equations for the spinor components of the wave-function. In the present article we suggest that it might be possible to think of the Dirac equations in the N-P formalism as a …
The notion of collapse is discussed and refined within the Two-State-Vector Formalism (TSVF). We show how a definite result of a measurement can be fully determined when considering specific forward and backward-evolving quantum states. Moreover, we show how macroscopic time-reversibility is attained, at the level of a single branch of the wavefunction, when several conditions regarding the final state and dynamics are met, a property for which we coin the term "classical robustness under time-reversal". These entail a renewed perspective on the measurement problem, the Born rule and the many-…
In this essay, we explore the limits imposed by the impossibility of superluminal signalling on the class of physically realisable quantum operations, focusing on the difference in approaches one can take towards this problem in Hilbert space quantum theory and algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT). We review a recent proposal by Fewster and Verch for a generally covariant measurement scheme in AQFT, which we call the FV scheme; along the way, we argue that the framework as set up in its original proposal can be greatly simplified without losing generality or physical motivation. We then discu…
In the functional Schrodinger formalism, we obtain the wave function describing collapsing dust in an anti-de Sitter background, as seen by a co-moving observer, by mapping the resulting variable mass Schrodinger equation to that of the quantum isotonic oscillator. Using this wave function, we perform a causal de Broglie-Bohm analysis, and obtain the corresponding quantum potential. We construct a bouncing geometry via a disformal transformation, incorporating quantum effects. We derive the external solution that matches with this smoothly, and is also quantum corrected. Due to a pressure term…
We outline the rationale and preliminary results of using the state context property (SCOP) formalism, originally developed as a generalization of quantum mechanics, to describe the contextual manner in which concepts are evoked, used and combined to generate meaning. The quantum formalism was developed to cope with problems arising in the description of (i) the measurement process, and (ii) the generation of new states with new properties when particles become entangled. Similar problems arising with concepts motivated the formal treatment introduced here. Concepts are viewed not as fixed rep…
The postulate of the collapse of the wave function stands between the microscopic, quantum world, and the macroscopic world. Because of this intermediate position, the collapse process cannot be examined with the formalism of the quantum mechanics (QM), neither with that of classical mechanics. This fact makes some physicists to propose interpretations of QM, which avoid this postulate. However, the common procedure used in that, is making assumptions incompatible with the QM formalism. The present work discusses the most popular interpretations. It is shown that because of such assumptions th…
We analyse the evolution of the entanglement of a non-trivial initial quantum field state (which, for simplicity, has been taken to be a bipartite state made out of vacuum and the first excited state) when it undergoes a gravitational collapse. We carry out this analysis by generalising the tools developed to study entanglement behaviour in stationary scenarios and making them suitable to deal with dynamical spacetimes. We also discuss what kind of problems can be tackled using the formalism spelled out here as well as single out future avenues of research.

Collapse models including some external noise of unknown origin are routinely used to describe phenomena on the quantum-classical border; in particular, quantum measurement. Although containing nonlinear dynamics and thereby exposed to the possibility of superluminal signaling in individual events, such models are widely accepted on the basis of fully reproducing the non-signaling statistical predictions of quantum mechanics. Here we present a deterministic nonlinear model without any external noise, in which randomness - instead of being universally present - emerges in the measurement proces…

We present a simple derivation of the interference pattern in matter-wave interferometry as predicted by a class of master equations, by using the density matrix formalism. We apply the obtained formulae to the most relevant collapse models, namely the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) model, the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model together with its dissipative (dCSL) and non-markovian generalizations (cCSL), the quantum mechanics with universal position localization (QMUPL) and the Diósi-Penrose (DP) model. We discuss the separability of the collapse models dynamics along the 3 spatial …
The Diosi-Penrose model of quantum-classical boundary postulates gravity-related spontaneous wave function collapse of massive degrees of freedom. The decoherence effects of the collapses are in principle detectable if not masked by the overwhelming environmental decoherence. But the DP (or any other, like GRW, CSL) spontaneous collapses are not detectable themselves, they are merely the redundant formalism of spontaneous decoherence. To let DP collapses become testable physics, recently we extended the DP model and proposed that DP collapses are responsible for the emergence of the Newton gra…
The `no communication' theorem prohibits superluminal communication by showing that any measurement by Alice on an entangled system cannot change the reduced density matrix of Bob's state, and hence the expectation value of any measurement operator that Bob uses remains the same. We argue that the proof of the `no communication' theorem is incomplete and superluminal communication is possible through state discrimination in a higher-dimensional Hilbert space using ancilla qubits. We propose two quantum algorithms through state discrimantion for communication between two observers Alice and Bob…
We make use of the powerful formalism of quantum parameter estimation to assess the characteristic rates of a Continuous Spontaneous Localisation (CSL) model affecting the motion of a massive mechanical system. We show that a study performed in non-equilibrium conditions unveils the advantages provided by the use of genuinely quantum resources -- such as quantum correlations -- in estimating the CSL-induced diffusion rate. In stationary conditions, instead, the gap between quantum performance and a classical scheme disappears. Our investigation contributes to the ongoing effort aimed at identi…
In an influential paper, Eppley and Hannah argued that gravity must necessarily be quantized, by proposing a thought experiment involving classical gravitational waves interacting with quantum matter. They argue the interaction must either violate the uncertainty principle or allow superluminal signalling. The feasibility of implementing their experiment in our universe has been challenged by Mattingly, and other limitations of the argument have been noted by Huggett and Callender and by Albers et al.. However, these critiques do not directly refute the claim that coupling quantum theories wit…
The Transactional Interpretation of quantum mechanics exploits the intrinsic time-symmetry of wave mechanics to interpret the $ψ$ and $ψ$* wave functions present in all wave mechanics calculations as representing retarded and advanced waves moving in opposite time directions that form a quantum "handshake" or transaction. This handshake is a 4D standing-wave that builds up across space-time to transfer the conserved quantities of energy, momentum, and angular momentum in an interaction. Here we derive a two-atom quantum formalism describing a transaction. We show that the bi-directional electr…
In early days of navigation over sea and ocean it has been considered that when a ship, governed by waves, arrives as some critical distance of the global character, then this ship must absolute collapse, i.e. must fall in the nothing. Only remarkable Magellan voyage definitely "experimentally" realized proof that there is no absolute collapse of the ship trajectory on the ocean, that different collapses of the ship trajectories have always less or more local character, and, that only spherical-symmetric form of the Earth has absolute character. Within standard quantum mechanical formalism col…
The Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) theory of spontaneous wave function collapse is known to provide a quantum theory without observers, in fact two different ones by using either the matter density ontology (GRWm) or the flash ontology (GRWf). Both theories are known to make predictions different from those of quantum mechanics, but the difference is so small that no decisive experiment can as yet be performed. While some testable deviations from quantum mechanics have long been known, we provide here something that has until now been missing: a formalism that succinctly summarizes the empirical …
Different attempts to solve the measurement problem of the quantum mechanics (QM) by denying the collapse principle, and replacing it with changes in the quantum formalism, failed because the changes in the formalism lead to contradictions with QM predictions. To the difference, Ghirardi, Rimini and Weber took the collapse as a real phenomenon, and proposed a calculus by which the wave-function should undergo a sudden localization. Later on, Ghirardi, Pearle and Rimini came with a change of this calculus into the CSL (continuous spontaneous localization) model of collapse. Both these proposals…
In this paper we we will argue against the orthodox definition of quantum entanglement which has been implicitly grounded on several widespread (metaphysical) presuppositions which have no relation whatsoever to the formalism of QM. We will show how these presuppositions have been introduced through a naive interpretation of the quantum mathematical structure which assumes dogmatically that the theory talks about "small particles" represented by pure states (in general, superpositions) which suddenly "collapse" when a measurement takes place. In the second part of this paper we will present a …
