What is the time-optimal way of realizing quantum operations? Here, we show how important instances of this problem can be related to the study of shortest paths on the surface of a sphere under a special metric. Specifically, we provide an efficient synthesis of a controlled NOT (CNOT) gate between qubits coupled indirectly via Ising-type couplings to a third spin. Our implementation of the CNOT gate is more than twice as fast as conventional approaches. The pulse sequences for efficient manipulation of our coupled spin system are obtained by explicit computation of geodesics on a sphere under the special metric. These methods are also used for the efficient synthesis of indirect couplings and of the Toffoli gate. We provide experimental realizations of the presented methods on a linear three-spin chain with Ising couplings.
In the model of gate-based quantum computation, the qubits are controlled by a sequence of quantum gates. In superconducting qubit systems, these gates can be implemented by voltage pulses. The success of implementing a particular gate can be expressed by various metrics such as the average gate fidelity, the diamond distance, and the unitarity. We analyze these metrics of gate pulses for a system of two superconducting transmon qubits coupled by a resonator, a system inspired by the architecture of the IBM Quantum Experience. The metrics are obtained by numerical solution of the time-dependen…
We propose a scalable design of entangling quantum gates for large ion crystals with the following desirable features: 1) The gate design is universal and applicable for large ion crystals of arbitrary sizes; 2) The gate has no speed limitation and can work outside of the Lamb-Dicke region; 3) The gate operates by driving from either continuous-wave or pulsed laser beams; 4) The gate is insensitive to slow variation of the laser optical phase and works under a thermal state for the ions' motion; 5) The intrinsic gate infidelity can be reduced to a level well below the threshold for fault-toler…
Design and optimisation of quantum logic circuits for a three-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm implemented with optically-controlled, solid-state quantum logic gates
High-fidelity two-qubit gates in quantum computers are often hampered by fluctuating experimental parameters. The effects of time-varying parameter fluctuations lead to coherent noise on the qubits, which can be suppressed by designing control signals with appropriate filter functions. Here, we develop filter functions for Mølmer-Sørensen gates of trapped-ion quantum computers that accurately predict the change in gate error due to small parameter fluctuations at any frequency. We then design the filter functions of frequency-modulated laser pulses, and compare this method with pulses that are…
We have designed efficient quantum circuits for the three-qubit Toffoli (controlled-controlled NOT) and the Fredkin (controlled-SWAP) gate, optimized via genetic programming methods. The gates thus obtained were experimentally implemented on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor, with a high fidelity. Toffoli and Fredkin gates in conjunction with the single-qubit Hadamard gates form a universal gate set for quantum computing, and are an essential component of several quantum algorithms. Genetic algorithms are stochastic search algorithms based on the logic of natural selection and bi…
Quantum computers based on rare-earth-ion-doped crystals show promising properties in terms of scalability and connectivity if single ions can be used as qubits. Through simulations, we investigate gate operations on such qubits and discuss how gate and system parameters affect gate errors, the required frequency bandwidth per qubit, and the risk of instantaneous spectral diffusion (ISD) occurring. Furthermore, we examine how uncertainties in the system parameters affect the gate errors, and how precisely the system needs to be known. We find gate errors for arbitrary single-qubit gates of $2.…
Randomized benchmarking (RB) is an important protocol for robustly characterizing the error rates of quantum gates. The technique is typically applied to the Clifford gates since they form a group that satisfies a convenient technical condition of forming a unitary 2-design, in addition to having a tight connection to fault-tolerant quantum computing and an efficient classical simulation. In order to achieve universal quantum computing one must add at least one additional gate such as the T gate (also known as the $π$/8 gate). Here we propose and analyze a simple variation of the standard inte…
We propose a non-deterministic CNOT gate based on a quantum cloner, a quantum switch based on all optical routing of single photon by single photon, a quantum-dot spin in a double-sided optical microcavity with two photonic qubits, delay lines and other linear optical photonic devices. Our CNOT provides a fidelity of 78% with directly useful outputs for a quantum computing circuit and requires no ancillary qubits or electron spin measurements.
We present a general framework to tackle the problem of finding time-independent dynamics generating target unitary evolutions. We show that this problem is equivalently stated as a set of conditions over the spectrum of the time-independent gate generator, thus transforming the task to an inverse eigenvalue problem. We illustrate our methodology by identifying suitable time-independent generators implementing Toffoli and Fredkin gates without the need for ancillae or effective evolutions. We show how the same conditions can be used to solve the problem numerically, via supervised learning tec…
High-fidelity two-qubits gates are essential for the realization of large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Tunable coupler design is used to reduce the problem of parasitic coupling and frequency crowding in many-qubit systems and thus thought to be advantageous. Here we design a extensible 5-qubit system in which center transmon qubit can couple to every four near-neighbor qubit via a capacitive tunable coupler and experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity controlled-phase (CZ) gate by manipulating center qubit and one near-neighbor qubit. Speckle purity benchmarking (SPB) and cross e…
Optimal control theory provides a framework for numerical discovery of device controls that implement quantum logic gates, but common objective functions used for optimization often assign arbitrarily high costs to otherwise useful controls. We propose a framework for designing objective functions that permit novel gate designs such as echo pulses or locally-equivalent gates. We use numerical simulations to demonstrate the efficacy of the new objective functions by designing microwave-only pulses that act as entangling gates for superconducting transmon architectures. We observe that the propo…

Quantum technologies, such as quantum communication, sensing and imaging, need a platform which is flexible, miniaturizable and works at room temperature. Integrated photonics is a promising and fast-developing platform. This requires to develop the right tools to design and fabricate arbitrary photonic quantum devices. Here we present an algorithm which, starting from a $n$-mode transformation $U$, designs a photonic device implementing $U$. Using this method we design integrated photonic devices which implement quantum gates with high fidelity. Apart from quantum computation, future applicat…
We propose a simple but versatile protocol to engineer time-dependent Hamiltonians inversely for geometric quantum computation. By utilizing SU(2) transformation, a speedup goal on gate operation is achieved with more freedom to design the control parameters. As an application, this protocol enables the conventional and unconventional nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates with desired evolution paths by controlling the microwave pulses in the diamond nitrogen-vacancy center system. We show that the inversely designed Hamiltonian can fulfill the geometric gate with more economical evolution time…
In this work, we report on a novel quantum gate approximation algorithm based on the application of parametric two-qubit gates in the synthesis process. The utilization of these parametric two-qubit gates in the circuit design allows us to transform the discrete combinatorial problem of circuit synthesis into an optimization problem over continuous variables. The circuit is then compressed by a sequential removal of two-qubit gates from the design, while the remaining building blocks are continuously adapted to the reduced gate structure by iterated learning cycles. We implemented the develope…
Full connectivity of qubits is necessary for most quantum algorithms, which is difficult to directly implement on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum processors. However, inserting swap gate to enable the two-qubit gates between uncoupled qubits significantly decreases the computation result fidelity. To this end, we propose a Special-Purpose Quantum Processor Design method that can design suitable structures for different quantum algorithms. Our method extends the processor structure from two-dimensional lattice graph to general planar graph and arranges the physical couplers according to the tw…

Quantum Phase Estimation is one of the most useful quantum computing algorithms for quantum chemistry and as such, significant effort has been devoted to designing efficient implementations. In this article, we introduce TFermion, a library designed to estimate the T-gate cost of such algorithms, for an arbitrary molecule. As examples of usage, we estimate the T-gate cost of a few simple molecules and compare the same Taylorization algorithms using Gaussian and plane-wave basis.
In this paper, we proposed a design of integrated programmable controlled-phase (CPHASE) gate to be used in quantum information processing applications. This gate is capable of introducing arbitrary phase difference to target qubit in the case of control qubit being in the state of |1>. Because the desired phase difference is possible to be utilized after fabrication unlike the conventional controlled-phase gates which provide hard-coded phase shift, such an integrated gate is expected to pave the way for more versatile operations of current integrated optical circuits as well as possible new …
The challenge of quantum computing is to combine error resilience with universal computation. Diagonal gates such as the transversal $T$ gate play an important role in implementing a universal set of quantum operations. This paper introduces a framework that describes the process of preparing a code state, applying a diagonal physical gate, measuring a code syndrome, and applying a Pauli correction that may depend on the measured syndrome (the average logical channel induced by an arbitrary diagonal gate). It focuses on CSS codes, and describes the interaction of code states and physical gates…
