We propose a scheme for linear optical quantum Fredkin gate based on the combination of recently experimentally demonstrated linear optical partial SWAP gate and controlled-Z gates. Both heralded gate and simplified postselected gate operating in the coincidence basis are designed. The suggested setups have a simple structure and require stabilization of only a single Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of the postselected Fredkin gate appears to be feasible and within the reach of current technology.
The optimal cost of a three-qubit Fredkin gate is 5 two-qubit entangling gates, and the overhead climbs to 8 when restricted to controlled-not (CNOT) gates. By harnessing higher-dimensional Hilbert spaces, we reduce the cost of a three-qubit Fredkin gate from 8 CNOTs to 5 nearest-neighbor CNOTs. We also present construction of an n-control-qubit Fredkin gate with 2n+3 CNOTs and 2n single-qudit operations. Finally, we design deterministic and nondeterministic three-qubit Fredkin gates in photonic architectures. The cost of a nondeterministic three-qubit Fredkin gate is further reduced to 4 near…
Optimizing the physical realization of quantum gates is important to build a quantum computer. The controlled-SWAP gate, also named Fredkin gate, can be widely applicable in various quantum information processing schemes. In the present research, we propose and experimentally implement quantum Fredkin gate in a single-photon hybrid-degrees-of-freedom system. Polarization is used as the control qubit, and SWAP operation is achieved in a four-dimensional Hilbert space spanned by photonic orbital angular momentum. The effective conversion rate $\mathcal{P}$ of the quantum Fredkin gate in our expe…
The three-qubit conditional swap gate(Fredkin gate) is a universal gate that can be used to create any logic circuit and has many direct usages. In this paper, we experimentally realized Fredkin gate with only three transition pulses in solution of alanine. It appears that no experimental realization of Fredkin gate with fewer pulses has yet been reported up to now. In addition, the simple structure of our scheme makes it easy to be implemented in experiments.
We consider the realization of quantum Fredkin gate with only linear optics and single photons. First we construct a heralded Fredkin gate using four heralded controlled-not (CNOT) gates. Then we simplify this method to a post-selected one utilizing only two CNOT gates. We also give a possible realization of this method which is feasible with current experimental technology. Another post-selected scheme requires time entanglement of the input photons but needs no ancillary photons.
We present an efficient scheme to generate two-mode SU(2) macroscopic quantum superposition (Schrödinger cat) states, entangled number states and entangled coherent states for the vibrational motion of an ion trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential well. We also show that the same scheme can be used to realize a Fredkin gate operation.
Linear optical quantum Fredkin gate can be applied to quantum computing and quantum multi-user communication network. In the existing linear optical scheme, two single photon detectors (SPDs) are used to heralding the success of the quantum Fredkin gate while they have no photon count. But analysis results show that for non-perfect SPD the lower the detector efficiency, the higher the heralded success rate by this scheme. We propose an improved linear optical quantum Fredkin gate by designing a new heralding scheme with an auxiliary qubit and only one SPD, in which the higher the detection eff…
Quantum information science addresses how the processing and transmission of information are affected by uniquely quantum mechanical phenomena. Combination of two-qubit gates has been used to realize quantum circuits, however, scalability is becoming a critical problem. The use of three-qubit gates may simplify the structure of quantum circuits dramatically. Among them, the controlled-SWAP (Fredkin) gates are essential since they can be directly applied to important protocols, e.g., error correction, fingerprinting, and optimal cloning. Here we report a realization of the Fredkin gate for phot…
We design linear optics multiqubit quantum logic gates. We assume the traditional encoding of a qubit onto state of a single photon in two modes (e.g. spatial or polarization). We suggest schemes allowing direct probabilistic realization of the fundamental Toffoli and Fredkin gates without resorting to a sequence of single- and two-qubit gates. This yields more compact schemes and potentially reduces the number of ancilla photons. The proposed setups involve passive linear optics, sources of auxiliary single photons or maximally entangled pairs of photons, and single-photon detectors. In parti…
We present two efficient methods for implementing the Fredkin gate with atoms separately trapped in an array of three high-$Q$ coupled cavities. The first proposal is based on the resonant dynamics, which leads to a fast resonant interaction in a certain subspace while leaving others unchanged, and the second one utilizes a dispersive interaction such that the effective long-distance dipole-dipole interaction between two distributed target qubits is achieved by virtually excited process. Both schemes can achieve the standard form of the Fredkin gate in a single step without any subsequent sing…
It is desirable to implement an efficient quantum information process demanding fewer quantum resources. We designed two compact quantum circuits for determinately implementing four-qubit Toffoli and Fredkin gates on single-photon systems in both the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) via diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in resonators. The gates are heralded by the electron spins associated with the diamond NV centers. In contrast to the ones with one DoF, our implementations reduce the quantum resource and are robust against the decoherence. Evaluations of fidelities and …
The basic principles and results of Conservative Logic introduced by Fredkin and Toffoli on the basis of a seminal paper of Landauer are extended to d-valued logics, with a special attention to three-valued logics. Different approaches to d-valued logics are examined in order to determine some possible universal sets of logic primitives. In particular, we consider the typical connectives of Lukasiewicz and Godel logics, as well as Chang's MV-algebras. As a result, some possible three-valued and d-valued universal gates are described which realize a functionally complete set of fundamental conn…
We study one-step implementation of the Fredkin gate in a bi-modal cavity under both resonant and large detuning conditions based on quantum Zeno dynamics, which reduces the complexity of experiment operations. The influence of cavity decay and atomic spontaneous emission is discussed by numerical calculation. The results demonstrate that the fidelity and the success probability are robust against cavity decay in both models and they are also insensitive to atomic spontaneous emission in the large detuning model. In addition, the interaction time is rather short in the resonant model compared …
We propose an optical scheme to prepare large-scale entangled networks of W states. The scheme works by simultaneously fusing three polarization-encoded W states of arbitrary size via accessing only one qubit of each W state. It is composed of a Fredkin gate (controlled-swap gate), two fusion gates [as proposed in New J. Phys. 13, 103003 (2011)] and an H-polarized ancilla photon. Starting with three $n$-qubit W states, the scheme prepares a new W state with $3(n-1)$-qubits after postselection if both fusion gates operate successfully, i.e. a four-fold coincidence at the detectors. The proposed…
Key to realising quantum computers is minimising the resources required to build logic gates into useful processing circuits. While the salient features of a quantum computer have been shown in proof-of-principle experiments, difficulties in scaling quantum systems have made more complex operations intractable. This is exemplified in the classical Fredkin (controlled-SWAP) gate for which, despite theoretical proposals, no quantum analogue has been realised. By adding control to the SWAP unitary, we use photonic qubit logic to demonstrate the first quantum Fredkin gate, which promises many appl…
Effective quantum information processing is tantamount in part to the minimization the quantum resources needed by quantum logic gates. Here, we propose an optimization of an n-controlled-qubit Fredkin gate with a maximum of 2n+1 two-qubit gates and 2n single-qudit gates by exploiting auxiliary Hilbert spaces. The number of logic gates required improves on earlier results on simulating arbitrary n-qubit Fredkin gates. In particular, the optimal result for one-controlled-qubit Fredkin gate (which requires three qutrit-qubit partial-swap gates) breaks the theoretical nonconstructive lower bound …
The Fredkin three-bit gate is universal for computational logic, and is reversible. Classically, it is impossible to do universal computation using reversible two-bit gates only. Here we construct the Fredkin gate using a combination of six two-body reversible (quantum) operators.
In a recent remarkable experiment [R. B. Patel et al., Science advances 2, e1501531 (2016)], a 3-qubit quantum Fredkin (i.e., controlled-SWAP) gate was demonstrated by using linear optics. Here we propose a simple experimental scheme by utilizing the dispersive interaction in superconducting quantum circuit to implement a hybrid Fredkin gate with a superconducting flux qubit as the control qubit and two separated quantum memories as the target qudits. The quantum memories considered here are prepared by the superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators or nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles. In …
Integrating a single Fredkin (controlled swap) gate to the previously introduced W state fusion mechanism (Ozdemir et al, N. J. Phys. 13, 103003, 2011) and using an ancillary photon, we increase the size of the fused W states and essentially, we improve the success probability of the fusion process in a promising way for a possible deterministic W state fusion mechanism. Besides fusing arbitrary size W states, our setup can also fuse Bell states to create W states with a success probability 3/4 which is much higher than the previous works. Therefore using only this setup, it is now possible to…
We present improved circuits for the control-control-phase (Toffoli) gate and the control-swap (Fredkin) gate using three and four global two-qubit gates, respectively. This is a nearly double speed-up compared to the conventional circuits, which require five (for Toffoli) and seven (for Fredkin) conditional two-qubit gates. We apply the same approach to construct the conditional four-qubit phase gate by seven global two-qubit gates. We also present construction of the Toffoli and the Fredkin gates with five nearest-neighbour interactions. Our constructions do not employ ancilla qubits or anci…
Quantum optical Fredkin gate is an indispensable resource for networkable quantum applications. Its performance in practical implementations, however, is limited fundamentally by the inherent quantum fluctuations of the pump waves. We demonstrate a method to overcome this drawback by exploiting stimulated Raman scattering in fiber-based implementations. Using a Sagnac fiber-loop switch as a specific example, we show that high switching contrast can be maintained even in the presence of significant pump fluctuations. This unique feature of self-stabilization, together with high-speed and low-lo…
High-efficiency quantum information processing is equivalent to the fewest quantum resources and the simplest operations by means of logic qubit gates. Based on the reflection geometry of a single photon interacting with a three-level $Λ$-typle atom-cavity system, we present some refined protocols for realizing controlled-not (CNOT), Fredkin, and Toffoli gates on hybrid systems. The first control qubit of our gates is encoded on a flying photon, and the rest qubits are encoded on the atoms in optical cavity. Moreover, these quantum gates can be extended to the optimal synthesis of multi-qubit …
Reversible logic has attracted much research interest over the last few decades, especially due to its application in quantum computing. In the construction of reversible gates from basic gates, ancilla bits are commonly used to remove restrictions on the type of gates that a certain set of basic gates generates. With unlimited ancilla bits, many gates (such as Toffoli and Fredkin) become universal reversible gates. However, ancilla bits can be expensive to implement, thus making the problem of minimizing necessary ancilla bits a practical topic. This thesis explores the problem of reversible …
Distinguishing between strings of data or waveforms is at the core of multiple applications in information technologies. In a quantum language the task is to design protocols to differentiate quantum states. Quantum-based technologies promises to go beyond the capabilities offered by technologies based on classical principles. However the implementation of the logical gates that are the core of these systems is challenging since they should overcome quantum decoherence, low probability of success and are prone to errors. One unexpected contribution of considering ideas in the quantum world is …
We have designed efficient quantum circuits for the three-qubit Toffoli (controlled-controlled NOT) and the Fredkin (controlled-SWAP) gate, optimized via genetic programming methods. The gates thus obtained were experimentally implemented on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor, with a high fidelity. Toffoli and Fredkin gates in conjunction with the single-qubit Hadamard gates form a universal gate set for quantum computing, and are an essential component of several quantum algorithms. Genetic algorithms are stochastic search algorithms based on the logic of natural selection and bi…
In this paper, elementary quantum gate operations, such as the phase gate, the controlled-NOT gate, the swap and the Fredkin gate are constructed using joint measurement and pairs of entangled qubit pairs. The relation between the state of the entangled pair and the joint measurement basis is discussed. Some other generalization is also discussed.
We introduce a new model of interacting spin 1/2. It describes interaction of three nearest neighbors. The Hamiltonian can be expressed in terms of Fredkin gates. The Fredkin gate (also known as the CSWAP gate) is a computational circuit suitable for reversible computing. Our construction generalizes the work of Ramis Movassagh and Peter Shor. Our model can be solved by means of Catalan combinatorics in the form of random walks on the upper half of a square lattice [Dyck walks]. Each Dyck path can be mapped to a wave function of the spins. The ground state is an equally weighted superposition …
We study two-level q-deformed angular momentum states and us- ing q-deformed harmonic oscillators, we provide a framework for con- structing qubits and quantum gates. We also present the construction of some basic quantum gates including CNOT, SWAP, Toffoli and Fredkin.
We present a simple architecture for deterministic quantum circuits operating on single photon qubits. Few resources are necessary to implement two elementary gates and can be recycled for computing with large numbers of qubits. The deterministic realization of some key multi-qubit gates, such as the Fredkin and Toffoli gate, is greatly simplified in this approach.
Based on a multimode multilevel Jaynes-Cummings model and multiphoton resonance theory, a set of universal two- and three-qubit gates, namely the iSWAP and the Fredkin gates, has been realized where dual-rail qubits are encoded in cavities. In this way the information has been stored in cavities and the off-resonant atomic levels have been eliminated by the semi-classical theory of an effective two-level Hamiltonian. A further semi-classical model, namely the spin-$J$ model, has been introduced so that a complete population inversion for levels of interest has been achieved and periodic multil…
Universal quantum gates are the core elements in quantum information processing. We design two schemes to realize more general (SWAP)$^{1/m}$ and controlled--(swap)$^{1/m}$ gates (for integer $m\geq1$) by directing flying single photons to solid--state quantum dots. The parameter $m$ is easily controlled by adjusting two quarter--wave plates and one half--wave plate. Additional computational qubits are not required to construct the two gates. Evaluations of the gates indicate that our proposals are feasible with current experimental technology.
We propose a deterministic SWAP gate for spatially encoded qubits. The gate is constructed from waveguide crossings, Mach Zender Interferometers and phase shifters providing the gate reconfigurability. Through manipulating the phase of the phase shifters, we can apply either the SWAP or identity gates. As an essential element of nearest neighbor qubit networks, the SWAP gate has a simple structure and presents minimal overhead, making it viable for universal quantum computation.
We give a quantum gate construction - composed entirely from incidents of the CNOT gate - that generalises the qubit SWAP gate to higher dimensions. This new construction is more regular than and is an improvement on the WilNOT quantum gate construction.
The SWAP gate plays a central role in network designs for qubit quantum computation. However, there is a view to generalize qubit quantum computing to higher dimensional quantum systems. In this paper we construct a generalized SWAP gate using only instances of the generalized controlled-NOT gate to cyclically permute the states of $d$ qudits for $d$ prime.
We present a quantum SWAP gate valid for quantum systems of an arbitrary dimension. The gate generalizes the CNOT implementation of the SWAP gate for qubits and keeps its most important properties, like symmetry and simplicity. We only use three copies of the same controlled qudit gate. This gate can be built with two standard higher-dimensional operations, the Quantum Fourier Transform and the d-dimensional version of the CZ gate.
We theoretically propose an alternative method to realize a deterministic SWAP gate using shortcuts to adiabatic passage based on the approach of Lewis- Riesenfeld invariants in cavity quantum electronic dynamics (QED). By combining Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants with quantum Zeno dynamics, the SWAP gate can be achieved deterministically. The strict numerical results show that our scheme is a fast and robust approach to achieve SWAP gate.
We present a linear-optical implementation of a class of two-qubit partial SWAP gates for polarization states of photons. Different gate operations, including the SWAP and entangling square root of SWAP, can be obtained by changing a classical control parameter -- namely the path difference in the interferometer. Reconstruction of output states, full process tomography and evaluation of entanglement of formation prove very good performance of the gates.
We present a process for the construction of a SWAP gate which does not require a composition of elementary gates from a universal set. We propose to employ direct techniques adapted to the preparation of this specific gate. The mechanism, based on adiabatic passage, constitutes a decoherence-free method in the sense that spontaneous emission and cavity damping are avoided.
A SWAP operation between different types of qubits of single photons is essential for manipulating hyperentangled photons for a variety of applications. We have implemented an efficient SWAP gate for the momentum and polarization degrees of freedom of single photons. The SWAP gate was utilized in a single-photon two-qubit quantum logic circuit to deterministically transfer momentum entanglement between a pair of down-converted photons to polarization entanglement. The polarization entanglement thus obtained violates Bell's inequality by more than 150 standard deviations.
We propose a scheme to implement quantum controlled SWAP gates by directing single-photon pulses to a two-sided cavity with a single trapped atom. The resultant gates can be used to realize quantum fingerprinting and universal photonic quantum computation. The performance of the scheme is characterized under realistic experimental noise with the requirements well within the reach of the current technology.
We theoretically present a method to realize a deterministic photon-photon (SWAP)^{1/2} gate using a three-level lambda system interacting with single photons in reflection geometry. The lambda system is used completely passively as a temporary memory for a photonic qubit; the initial state of the lambda system may be arbitrary, and active control by auxiliary fields is unnecessary throughout the gate operations. These distinct merits make this entangling gate suitable for deterministic and scalable quantum computation.
Broadband implementations of time-optimal geodesic pulse elements are introduced for the efficient creation of effective trilinear coupling terms for spin systems consisting of three weakly coupled spins 1/2. Based on these pulse elements, the time-optimal implementation of indirect SWAP operations is demonstrated experimentally. The duration of indirect SWAP gates based on broadband geodesic sequence is reduced by 42.3% compared to conventional approaches.
We study the entangling power and perfect entangler nature of (SWAP)1/m, for m>=1, and controlled unitary (CU) gates. It is shown that (SWAP)1/2 is the only perfect entangler in the family. On the other hand, a subset of CU which is locally equivalent to CNOT is identified. It is shown that the subset, which is a perfect entangler, must necessarily possess the maximum entangling power.
We introduce a nonunitary partial-swap gate for fusing arbitrary small-sized photonic W-states into a large-scale entangled network of W-state efficiently without ancillary photons. A partial-swap gate is designed in an optical architecture based on linear optics elements. By introducing auxiliary degree of freedom, this gate provides a higher success probability with less cost. Our implementation can create a larger target state with a simpler set-up than previous proposals for W-state fusion. Also all "garbage" states are recyclable, i.e., there is no complete failure output in our scheme in…
We introduce quantum hybrid gates that act on qudits of different dimensions. In particular, we develop two representative two-qudit hybrid gates (SUM and SWAP) and many-qudit hybrid Toffoli and Fredkin gates. We apply the hybrid SUM gate to generating entanglement, and find that operator entanglement of the SUM gate is equal to the entanglement generated by it for certain initial states. We also show that the hybrid SUM gate acts as an automorphism on the Pauli group for two qudits of different dimension under certain conditions. Finally, we describe a physical realization of these hybrid gat…
A dynamics regime of Rydberg atoms, unselective ground-state blockade (UGSB), is proposed in the context of Rydberg antiblockade (RAB), where the evolution of two atoms is suppressed when they populate in an identical ground state. UGSB is used to implement a SWAP gate in one step without individual addressing of atoms. Aiming at circumventing common issues in RAB-based gates including atomic decay, Doppler dephasing, and fluctuations in the interatomic coupling strength, we modify the RAB condition to achieve a dynamical SWAP gate whose robustness is much greater than that of the nonadiabatic…
Quantum algorithms can be realized in the form of a quantum circuit. To map quantum circuit for specific quantum algorithm to quantum hardware, qubit mapping is an imperative technique based on the qubit topology. Due to the neighbourhood constraint of qubit topology, the implementation of quantum algorithm rightly, is essential for moving information around in a quantum computer. Swapping of qubits using SWAP gate moves the quantum state between two qubits and solves the neighbourhood constraint of qubit topology. Though, one needs to decompose the SWAP gate into three CNOT gates to implement…
A scheme is presented for realizing frequency-up conversion and a two-qubit quantum swap gate for intracavity fields. In the scheme, a V-type atomic ensemble prepared in their ground states collectively mediates the interaction between the two cavity modes. Under certain conditions, the cavity-field degree of freedom is decoupled from the atomic degrees of freedom, and the effective coupling strength between the two cavity modes scales up with $\sqrt{N}$ ($N$ is the number of atoms). The numerical simulation shows that the quantum swap gate still has a high fidelity under the influence of the …
