We propose a scalable design of entangling quantum gates for large ion crystals with the following desirable features: 1) The gate design is universal and applicable for large ion crystals of arbitrary sizes; 2) The gate has no speed limitation and can work outside of the Lamb-Dicke region; 3) The gate operates by driving from either continuous-wave or pulsed laser beams; 4) The gate is insensitive to slow variation of the laser optical phase and works under a thermal state for the ions' motion; 5) The intrinsic gate infidelity can be reduced to a level well below the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation under realistic experimental parameters. Different from the previous gate schemes, here we propose a gate design based on driving of the local oscillation mode of the ions instead of the collective normal modes and develop a formalism based on the Heisenberg equations to deal with the many-body quantum dynamics outside of the Lamb-Dicke region.
We discuss the configuration and acoustic phonon effect on the conditional phase gate using self assembled quantum dots. As an example, we discuss the simplest three dots conditional phase gate, and we found that the fidelity of conditional phase gate depends strongly on the configuration and temperature. Numerical simulation shows that line-configuration resonant with lower single exciton energy level performs better during the gate operation.
We propose a scheme to implement quantum controlled NOT gate and quantum phase gate in an optomechanical system based on phonon blockade. For appropriate choices of system parameters, fidelities of both the quantum gate operations are very close to unity in the absence of dissipation. Using recently achieved experimental values in a mechanical resonator coupled to a microwave cavity, we show that the quantum gate can be realized experimentally with very high fidelity.
We propose a scheme to implement quantum gates on any pair of trapped ions immersed in a large linear crystal, using interaction mediated by the transverse phonon modes. Compared with the conventional approaches based on the longitudinal phonon modes, this scheme is much less sensitive to ion heating and thermal motion outside of the Lamb-Dicke limit thanks to the stronger confinement in the transverse direction. The cost for such a gain is only a moderate increase of the laser power to achieve the same gate speed. We also show how to realize arbitrary-speed quantum gates with transverse phono…
Recent experiments by Hayashi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 226804 (2003)] demonstrate coherent oscillations of a charge quantum bit (qubit) in laterally defined quantum dots. We study the intrinsic electron-phonon decoherence and gate performance for the next step: a system of two coupled charge qubits. The effective decoherence model contains properties of local as well as collective decoherence. Decoherence channels can be classified by their multipole moments, which leads to different low-energy spectra. It is shown that due to the super-Ohmic spectrum, the gate quality is limited by the si…
We study a spin-phononic system where diamond defect centers are interfaced with a quasi-one-dimensional phononic crystal. We show that, a single defect center, coupled to the phonon modes of a phononic crystal waveguide near the band gap, can seed its own phononic cavity mode with an exponentially decaying envelope around the defect center's position. The spin-induced phononic cavity, with a greatly reduced and tunable mode volume, allows coherent phonon-mediated interactions between distant spins with a highly tunable range, enabling access to a variety of long-range interacting spin models.…
Nanomechanical systems made from phononic crystals can act as highly coherent microwave-frequency circuits at cryogenic temperatures. However, generating sufficient coupling between these devices and microwave superconducting quantum circuits is challenging due to the vastly different length scales of acoustic and electrical excitations. Here we demonstrate a general recipe for calculating these interactions and show that large piezoelectric coupling rates between microwave superconducting circuits containing Josephson junctions and nanoscale phononic resonances are possible, suggesting a rout…
We have presented a consistent electronic transport framework for the two-dimensional extended Holstein's organic molecular-crystal based upon complete quantum-mechanical treatment through the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism and corresponding one-to-one semi-classical framework based upon Boltzmann transport theory for the narrow-bandwidth electronic energy organic semiconductor crystal material and device. In this process, we have formulated electronic self-energy interaction with acoustic and polar optical phonon mode with one phonon and two phonon interactions through Feyn…
Nano-structuring impurity-doped crystals affects the phonon density of states and thereby modifies the atomic dynamics induced by interaction with phonons. We propose the use of nano-structured materials in the form of powders or phononic bandgap crystals to enable or improve persistent spectral hole-burning and coherence for inhomogeneously broadened absorption lines in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. This is crucial for applications such as ultra-precise radio-frequency spectrum analyzers and optical quantum memories. As an example, we discuss how phonon engineering can enable spectral hole b…
CsYbSe$_2$, a recently identified quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate, exhibits strong crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. Here, we identify phonon and CEF modes with Raman spectroscopy and observe strong CEF-phonon mixing resulting in a vibronic bound state. Complex, mesoscale interplay between phonon modes and CEF modes is observed in real space, and an unexpected nearly resonant condition is satisfied, yielding up to fifth-order combination modes, with a total of 17 modes identified in the spectra. This study paves the way to coherent control of possible QSL ground states with optical…
Using a nanomanipulation technique a nanodiamond with a single nitrogen vacancy center is placed directly on the surface of a gallium phosphide photonic crystal cavity. A Purcell-enhancement of the fluorescence emission at the zero phonon line (ZPL) by a factor of 12.1 is observed. The ZPL coupling is a first crucial step towards future diamond-based integrated quantum optical devices.
In the field of phononics, periodic patterning controls vibrations and thereby the flow of heat and sound in matter. Bandgaps arising in such phononic crystals realize low-dissipation vibrational modes and enable applications towards mechanical qubits, efficient waveguides, and state-of-the-art sensing. Here, we combine phononics and two-dimensional materials and explore the possibility of manipulating phononic crystals via applied mechanical pressure. To this end, we fabricate the thinnest possible phononic crystal from monolayer graphene and simulate its vibrational properties. We find a ban…
Analytic expressions for the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a one-dimensional harmonic crystal are obtained. The average energy and density profiles are obtained numerically as a function of temperature. A surprisingly large number of energy levels (eg.\ 5,000 for 4 particles) are required for reliable results at even moderate temperatures.
