The ability to sense and control nuclear spins near solid-state defects might enable a range of quantum technologies. Dynamically Decoupled Radio-Frequency (DDRF) control offers a high degree of design flexibility and long electron-spin coherence times. However, previous studies considered simplified models and little is known about optimal gate design and fundamental limits. Here, we develop a generalised DDRF framework that has important implications for spin sensing and control. Our analytical model, which we corroborate by experiments on a single NV center in diamond, reveals the mechanisms that govern the selectivity of gates and their effective Rabi frequencies, and enables flexible detuned gate designs. We apply these insights to numerically show a 60x sensitivity enhancement for detecting weakly coupled spins and study the optimisation of quantum gates in multi-qubit registers. These results advance the understanding for a broad class of gates and provide a toolbox for application-specific design, enabling improved quantum control and sensing.
Due to their long coherence times, nuclear spins have gained considerable attention as physical qubits. Two-qubit gates between nuclear spins of distinct resonance frequencies can be mediated by electron spins, usually employing a sequence of electron-nuclear gates. Here we present a different approach inspired by, but not limited to, NV centers in diamond and discuss possible applications. To this end we generalize external electron spin control sequences for nuclear spin initialization and hyperpolarization to achieve the simultaneous control of distinct nuclear spins via an electron spin. T…
Quantum sensing is considered to be one of the most promising subfields of quantum information to deliver practical quantum advantages in real-world applications. However, its impressive capabilities, including high sensitivity, are often hindered by the limited quantum resources available. Here, we incorporate the expected information gain (EIG) and techniques such as accelerated computation into Bayesian experimental design (BED) in order to use quantum resources more efficiently. A simulated nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond is used to demonstrate real-time operation of the BED. Instead of…
Current typical methods to realize nuclear-nuclear quantum gates require a sequence of electronnuclear quantum gates by using dynamical decoupling techniques, which are implemented at low temperature because of short decoherence and relaxation time of the NV spin at room temperature. This limitation could be overcome by using periodical resets of an NV spin as a mediator of interaction between two nuclear spins [Chen, Schwarz, and Plenio, 119, 010801 (2017)]. However, this method works under stringent coupling strengths condition, which makes it not applicable to heteronuclear quantum gate ope…
Nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals can be measured through hyperfine interaction to paramagnetic electron sensor spins. A heterodyne approach is widely used to overcome the electron spin lifetime limit in spectral resolution. It uses a series of modified Hahn echo pulse sequences applied coherently with precession signal resulting in a subsampled NMR signal. Due to challenges with applying high electron Rabi frequencies its application is limited to low fields, thus the full potential of the method is not yet exploited at high magnetic fields, beneficial for NMR. Here we presen…
The Quantum Fourier Transformation ($QFT$) is a key building block for a whole wealth of quantum algorithms. Despite its proven efficiency, only a few proof-of-principle demonstrations have been reported. Here we utilize $QFT$ to enhance the performance of a quantum sensor. We implement the $QFT$ algorithm in a hybrid quantum register consisting of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center electron spin and three nuclear spins. The $QFT$ runs on the nuclear spins and serves to process the sensor - NV electron spin signal. We demonstrate $QFT$ for quantum (spins) and classical signals (radio frequency (RF…
Nuclear Magnetic Ressonance (NMR) is a widely used technique, with a long history of applications in chemestry, medicine, and material science. Twenty years ago, it emerged as a reliable source for quantum computing too, since the work of Cory. One of its major advantage is the ease with which arbitrary unitary transformations can be implemented, together with its experimental simplicity, that can be traced back to very simple NMR routines, which were being extensively used long before. However, some disadvantages came along, mostly related to experimental effort in the initialisation and meas…
Entangled resources enable quantum sensing that achieves Heisenberg scaling, a quadratic improvement on the standard quantum limit, but preparing large scale entangled states is challenging in the presence of decoherence. We present a quantum control strategy using highly nonlinear geometric phase gates for preparing entangled states on spin ensembles which can be used for practical precision metrology. The method uses a dispersive coupling of $N$ spins to a common bosonic mode and does not require addressability, special detunings, or interactions between the spins. Using a control sequence t…
Having accurate gate generation is essential for precise control of a quantum system. The generated gate usually suffers from linear and nonlinear distortion. Previous works have demonstrated how to use a qubit to correct linear frequency distortions but have not commented on how to handle nonlinear distortions. This is an important issue as we show that nonlinear amplitude distortions from the RF electronics can affect Rabi pulses by as much as 10%. We present work that demonstrates how a transmon qubit can be used as a highly sensitive cryogenic detector to characterize these nonlinear ampli…

Nuclear-spin qubits have long coherence time and are desirably applied into quantum information processing. However, the existing methods either fail to address single nucleus (such as nuclear magnetic resonance), or severely affect nuclear coherence time (such as electrical nuclear manipulation based on hyperfine stark effect, ENMHSE). Here we propose an electrical nuclear manipulation called nuclear electric resonance which can on the one hand address the single nuclear qubit, and on the other keep the long coherence time. Applying this, we construct universal quantum gates with external ele…
Neutral atom arrays are a rapidly developing platform for quantum science. In this work, we demonstrate a universal set of quantum gate operations on a new type of neutral atom qubit: a nuclear spin in an alkaline earth-like atom (AEA), $^{171}$Yb. We present techniques for cooling, trapping and imaging using a newly discovered magic trapping wavelength at $λ= 486.78$ nm. We implement qubit initialization, readout, and single-qubit gates, and observe long qubit lifetimes, $T_1 \approx 20$ s and $T^*_2 = 1.24(5)$ s, and a single-qubit operation fidelity $\mathcal{F}_{1Q} = 0.99959(6)$. We also …
We propose a scheme to achieve nuclear-nuclear indirect interactions mediated by a mechanically driven nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates and quantum-state transfer between two carbon nuclei. When dipole-dipole interaction strength is much larger than the driving field strength, the scheme is robust against decoherence caused by coupling between the NV center (nuclear spins) and the environment. Conveniently, precise control of dipole coupling is not required so this scheme is insensitive to fluctuating positions of the nuclear spins and the…
We propose a method to construct composite two-qubit gates with narrowband profiles with respect to the spin-spin coupling. The composite sequences are selective to the variations in the amplitude and duration of the spin-spin coupling, and can be used for highly-selective qubit addressing with greatly reduced cross talk, quantum logic spectroscopy, and quantum sensing.
The measurement of single quanta in a collection of coherently interacting objects is transformative in the investigations of emergent quantum phenomena. An isolated nuclear-spin ensemble is a remarkable platform owing to its coherence, but detecting its single spin excitations has remained elusive. Here, we use an electron spin qubit in a semiconductor quantum dot to sense a single nuclear-spin excitation (a nuclear magnon) with 1.9-ppm precision via the 200-kHz hyperfine shift on the 28-GHz qubit frequency. We demonstrate this single-magnon precision across multiple modes identified by nucle…
Color centers in solids, such as the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, offer well-protected and well-controlled localized electron spins that can be employed in various quantum technologies. Moreover, the long coherence time of the surrounding spinful nuclei can enable a robust quantum register controlled through the color center. We design pulse sequence protocols that drive the electron spin to generate robust entangling gates with these nuclear memory qubits. We find that compared to using Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) alone, Uhrig decoupling sequence and hybrid protocols composed of C…
Atomic Interferometer has two quantum unitary gates that must be realized for quantum sensing purposes from atomic gravimeter and atomic interferometer gyroscope. An optimal cost function which define the distance between two unitary operator is defines and based on it a pulse based stochastic gradient descent algorithm is derived for implementation of atomic mirror and atomic beam-splitter gates. By using numerical optimal control for those gate realization, we achieved to gate fidelity of 0.995 and 0.998 for mirror and beam-splitter gates, respectively. For this research, a two-level atomic …
