The simplest purely imaginary and piecewise constant $\cal PT$-symmetric potential located inside a larger box is studied. Unless its strength exceeds a certain critical value, all the spectrum of its bound states remains real and discrete. We interpret such a model as an initial element of the generalized non-Hermitian Witten's hierarchy of solvable Hamiltonians and construct its first supersymmetric (SUSY) partner in closed form.
By applying the higher order Darboux algorithm to an exactly solvable non Hermitian ${\cal{PT}}$ symmetric potential, we obtain a hierarchy of new exactly solvable non Hermitian ${\cal{PT}}$ symmetric potentials with real spectra. It is shown that the symmetry underlying the potentials so generated and the original one is {\it nonlinear pseudo supersymmetry}. We also show that this formalism can be used to generate a larger class of new solvable potentials when applied to non Hermitian systems.
We review the current status of one dimensional periodic potentials and also present several new results. It is shown that using the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, one can considerably enlarge the limited class of analytically solvable one-dimensional periodic potentials. Further, using the Landen transformations as well as cyclic identities for Jacobi elliptic functions discovered by us recently, it is shown that a linear superposition of Lamé (as well as associated Lamé) potentials are also analytically solvable. Finally, using anti-isospectral transformations, we also obtain…
We derive the analytical eigenvalues and eigenstates of a family of potentials wells with exponential form (FPWEF). We provide a brief summary of the supersymmetry formalism applied to quantum mechanics and illustrate it by producing from the FPWEF another class of exact solutions made of their isospectral partners. Interestingly, a subset of the supersymmetric partners provides a class of exactly solvable double well potentials. We use the exact solutions of the FPWEF to test the robustness and accuracy of different approximation schemes. We determine (i) the ground state through variational …
We construct two new exactly solvable potentials giving rise to bound-state solutions to the Schrödinger equation, which can be written in terms of the recently introduced Laguerre- or Jacobi-type $X_1$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These potentials, extending either the radial oscillator or the Scarf I potential by the addition of some rational terms, turn out to be translationally shape invariant as their standard counterparts and isospectral to them.
The nonlinear $n$-supersymmetry with holomorphic supercharges is investigated for the 2D system describing the motion of a charged spin-1/2 particle in an external magnetic field. The universal algebraic structure underlying the holomorphic $n$-supersymmetry is found. It is shown that the essential difference of the 2D realization of the holomorphic $n$-supersymmetry from the 1D case recently analysed by us consists in appearance of the central charge entering non-trivially into the superalgebra. The relation of the 2D holomorphic $n$-supersymmetry to the 1D quasi-exactly solvable (QES) proble…
A new supersymmetry method for the generation of the quasi-exactly solvable (QES) potentials with two known eigenstates is proposed. Using this method we obtained new QES potentials for which we found in explicit form the energy levels and wave functions of the ground state and first excited state.
It is shown that for a given Hermitian Hamiltonian possessing supersymmetry, there is alwayas a non-hermitian Jaynes-Cummings-type Hamiltonian(JCTH) admitting entirely real spectra. The parent supersymmetric Hamiltonian and the corresponding non-hermitian JCTH are simultaneously diagonalizable. The exact eigenstates of these non-hermitian Hamiltonians are constructed algebraically for certain shape-invariant potentials, including a non-hermitian version of the standard Jaynes-Cummings model for which the parent supersymmetric Hamiltonian is the superoscillator. The positive-definite metric ope…
We construct a variety of new exactly-solvable quantum systems, the potentials of which are given in terms of Lambert-W functions. In particular, we generate Schrödinger models with energy-dependent potentials, conventional Schrödinger models using the supersymmetry formalism, and two-dimensional Dirac systems. In addition, we derive Wronskian integral formulas for Lambert-W functions.
We examine in detail the possibilty of applying Darboux transformation to non Hermitian hamiltonians. In particular we propose a simple method of constructing exactly solvable PT symmetric potentials by applying Darboux transformation to higher states of an exactly solvable PT symmetric potential. It is shown that the resulting hamiltonian and the original one are pseudo supersymmetric partners. We also discuss application of Darboux transformation to hamiltonians with spontaneously broken PT symmetry.
The nonlinear supersymmetry of one-dimensional systems is investigated in the context of the quantum anomaly problem. Any classical supersymmetric system characterized by the nonlinear in the Hamiltonian superalgebra is symplectomorphic to a supersymmetric canonical system with the holomorphic form of the supercharges. Depending on the behaviour of the superpotential, the canonical supersymmetric systems are separated into the three classes. In one of them the parameter specifying the supersymmetry order is subject to some sort of classical quantization, whereas the supersymmetry of another ex…
Inozemtsev models are classically integrable multi-particle dynamical systems related to Calogero-Moser models. Because of the additional q^6 (rational models) or sin^2(2q) (trigonometric models) potentials, their quantum versions are not exactly solvable in contrast with Calogero-Moser models. We show that quantum Inozemtsev models can be deformed to be a widest class of partly solvable (or quasi-exactly solvable) multi-particle dynamical systems. They posses N-fold supersymmetry which is equivalent to quasi-exact solvability. A new method for identifying and solving quasi-exactly solvable sy…
The solutions of trigonometric Scarf potential, PT/non-PT-symmetric and non-Hermitian q-deformed hyperbolic Scarf and Manning-Rosen potentials are obtained by solving the Schrodinger equation. The Nikiforov-Uvarov method is used to obtain the real energy spectra and corresponding eigenfunctions.
The generalized Sinh-Gordon potential is solved within quantum Hamiltonian Jacobi approach in the framework of PT symmetry. The quasi exact solutions of energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the generalized Sinh-Gordon potential are found for n=0,1 states.
The spectrum of a one-dimensional Hamiltonian with potential $V(x)=ix^2$ for negative $x$ and $V(x)=-ix^2$ for positive $x$ is analyzed. The Schrödinger equation is algebraically solvable and the eigenvalues are obtained as the zeros of an expression explicitly given in terms of Gamma functions. The spectrum consists of one real eigenvalue and an infinite set of pairs of complex conjugate eigenvalues.
Within quantum mechanics which works with parity-pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians we study the tunneling in a symmetric double well formed by two delta functions with complex conjugate strengths. The model is exactly solvable and exhibits several interesting features. Besides an amazingly robust absence of any PT symmetry breaking, we observe a quasi-degeneracy of the levels which occurs all over the energy range including the high-energy domain. This pattern is interpreted as a manifestation of certain "quantum beats".
Dynamical systems exhibiting both PT and Supersymmetry are analyzed in a general scenario. It is found that, in an appropriate parameter domain, the ground state may or may not respect PT-symmetry. Interestingly, in the domain where PT-symmetry is not respected, two superpotentials give rise to one potential; whereas when the ground state respects PT, this correspondence is unique. In both scenarios, supersymmetry and shape-invariance are intact, through which one can obtain eigenfunctions and eigenstates exactly. Our procedure enables one to generate a host of complex potentials which are not…
The ${\cal PT}$ symmetric version of the generalised Ginocchio potential, a member of the general exactly solvable Natanzon potential class is analysed and its properties are compared with those of ${\cal PT}$ symmetric potentials from the more restricted shape-invariant class. It is found that the ${\cal PT}$ symmetric generalised Ginocchio potential has a number of properties in common with the latter potentials: it can be generated by an imaginary coordinate shift $x\to x+{\rm i}ε$; its states are characterised by the quasi-parity quantum number; the spontaneous breakdown of ${\cal PT}$ sym…

The Darboux transformation operator technique in differential and integral forms is applied to the generalized Schrodinger equation with a position-dependent effective mass and with linearly energy-dependent potentials. Intertwining operators are obtained in an explicit form and used for constructing generalized Darboux transformations of an arbitrary order. A relation between supersymmetry and the generalized Darboux transformation is considered. The method is applied to generation of isospectral potentials with additional or removal bound states or construction of new partner potentials with…
Using an isomorphism between Hilbert spaces $L^2$ and $\ell^{2}$ we consider Hamiltonians which have tridiagonal matrix representations (Jacobi matrices) in a discrete basis and an eigenvalue problem is reduced to solving a three term difference equation. Technique of intertwining operators is applied to creating new families of exactly solvable Jacobi matrices. It is shown that any thus obtained Jacobi matrix gives rise to a new exactly solvable non-local potential of the Schroedinger equation. We also show that the algebraic structure underlying our approach corresponds to supersymmetry. Sup…
We investigate particular models which can be N-fold supersymmetric at specific values of a parameter in the Hamiltonians. The models to be investigated are a periodic potential and a parity-symmetric sextic triple-well potential. Through the quantitative analyses on the non-perturbative contributions to the spectra by the use of the valley method, we show how the characteristic features of N-fold supersymmetry which have been previously reported by the authors can be observed. We also clarify the difference between quasi-exactly solvable and quasi-perturbatively solvable case in view of the d…
An elementary introduction is given to the subject of Supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics. We demonstrate with explicit examples that given a solvable problem in quantum mechanics with n bound states, one can construct new exactly solvable n Hamiltonians having n-1,n-2,...,0 bound states. The relationship between the eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and scattering matrix of the supersymmetric partner potentials is derived and a class of reflectionless potentials are explicitly constructed. We extend the operator method of solving the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator problem to a class of potentia…
Matrix quasi exactly solvable operators are considered and new conditions are determined to test whether a matrix differential operator possesses one or several finite dimensional invariant vector spaces. New examples of $2\times 2$-matrix quasi exactly solvable operators are constructed with the emphasis set on PT-symmetric Hamiltonians.
We extend the study of supersymmetric tridiagonal Hamiltonians to the case of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real or complex conjugate eigenvalues. We find the relation between matrix elements of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H$ and its supersymmetric partner $H^{+}$ in a given basis. Moreover, the orthogonal polynomials in the eigenstate expansion problem attached to $H^{+}$ can be recovered from those polynomials arising from the same problem for $H$ with the help of kernel polynomials. Besides its generality, the developed formalism in this work is a natural home for using the numerically…
The program to construct minimum-uncertainty coherent states for general potentials works transparently with solvable analytic potentials. However, when an analytic potential is not completely solvable, like for a double-well or the linear (gravitational) potential, there can be a conundrum. Motivated by supersymmetry concepts in higher dimensions, we show how these conundrums can be overcome.
For any central potential V in D dimensions, the angular Schroedinger equation remains the same and defines the so called hyperspherical harmonics. For non-central models, the situation is more complicated. We contemplate two examples in the plane: (1) the partial differential Calogero's three-body model (without centre of mass and with an impenetrable core in the two-body interaction), and (2) the Smorodinsky-Winternitz' superintegrable harmonic oscillator (with one or two impenetrable barriers). These examples are solvable due to the presence of the barriers. We contemplate a small complex s…
In "Comment on Supersymmetry, PT-symmetry and spectral bifurcation" \cite{BQ1}, Bagchi and Quesne correctly show the presence of a class of states for the complex Scarf-II potential in the unbroken PT-symmetry regime, which were absent in \cite{AP}. However, in the spontaneously broken PT-symmetry case, their argument is incorrect since it fails to implement the condition for the potential to be PT-symmetric: $C^{PT}[2(A-B)+α]=0$. It needs to be emphasized that in the models considered in \cite{AP}, PT is spontaneously broken, implying that the potential is PT- symmetric, whereas the ground st…
We study the spectrum in such a PT-symmetric square well of a diameter L where the "strength of the non-Hermiticity" is controlled by the two parameters, viz., by an imaginary coupling ig and by the distance d of its onset from the origin. We solve this problem and confirm that the spectrum is discrete and real in a non-empty interval of g. Surprisingly, a specific distinction between the bound states is found in their asymptotic stability/instability with respect to an unlimited growth of g. In our model, all of the low-lying levels remain asymptotically unstable at the small d and finite L w…
In this paper, we introduce a family of sextic potentials that are exactly solvable, and for the first time, a family of triple-well potentials with their whole energy spectrum and wavefunctions using supersymmetry method. It was suggested since three decades ago that all "additive" or "translational" shape invariant superpotentials formed by two combination of functions have been found and their list was already exhausted by the well-known exactly solvable potentials that are available in most textbooks and furthermore, there are no others. We have devised a new family of superpotentials form…
Bound states generated by K coupled PT-symmetric square wells are studied in a series of models where the Hamiltonians are assumed $R-$pseudo-Hermitian and $R^2-$symmetric. Specific rotation-like generalized parities $R$ are considered such that $R^N=I$ at some integers N. We show that and how our assumptions make the models exactly solvable and quasi-Hermitian. This means that they possess the real spectra as well as the standard probabilistic interpretation.
Searching for non-Hermitian (parity-time)$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians \cite{bender} with real spectra has been acquiring much interest for fourteen years. In this article, we have introduced a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model which is given as $\hat{\mathcal{H}}=ω(\hat{b}^\dagger\hat{b}+\frac{1}{2})+ α(\hat{b}^{2}-(\hat{b}^\dagger)^{2})$ where $ω$ and $α$ are real constants, $\hat{b}$ and $\hat{b^\dagger}$ are first order differential operators. Moreover, Pseudo-Hermiticity that is a generalization of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry has been attracting a growing intere…
Non-hermitian, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians, experimentally realized in optical systems, accurately model the properties of open, bosonic systems with balanced, spatially separated gain and loss. We present a family of exactly solvable, two-dimensional, $\mathcal{PT}$ potentials for a non-relativistic particle confined in a circular geometry. We show that the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry threshold can be tuned by introducing a second gain-loss potential or its hermitian counterpart. Our results explicitly demonstrate that $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking in two dimensions has a rich phase diagram, …
We use supersymmetry transformations to design transparent and one-way reflectionless (thus unidirectionally invisible) complex crystals with balanced gain and loss profiles. The scattering coefficients are investigated using the transfer matrix approach. It is shown that the amount of reflection from the left can be made arbitrarily close to zero whereas the reflection from the right is enhanced arbitrarily (or vice versa).
In nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum dots the electrons are confined through local nuclear spin polarization. The model electron confinement potential is time-dependent due to the nuclear spin diffusion and relaxation processes. It can be well-approximated by a Gaussian curve which is not an exactly solvable potential. We demonstrate that it can also be approximated by multisoliton potentials for the zero value of the angular momentum and by their singular analogues for other values of momentum without any loss of calculational accuracy. We obtain these potentials by supersymmetric (or…
The Dirac equation is considered in the background of potentials of several types, namely scalar and vector-potentials as well as "Dirac-oscillator" potential or some of its generalisations. We investigate the radial Dirac equation within a quite general spherically symmetric form for these potentials and we analyse some exactly and quasi exactly solvable properties of the underlying matricial linear operators.
A conditionally exactly solvable potential, the supersymmetric partner of the harmonic oscillator is investigated in the PT-symmetric setting. It is shown that a number of properties characterizing shape-invariant and Natanzon-class potentials generated by an imaginary coordinate shift $x-{\rm i}ε$ also hold for this potential outside the Natanzon class.
We show how the recently discovered solvable rational extensions of Harmonic Oscillator and Morse potentials can be constructed in a direct and systematic way, without the need of supersymmetry, shape invariance, Darboux-Crum and Darboux-Bäcklund transformations
The spectrum of complex PT-symmetric potential, $V(x)=igx$, is known to be null. We enclose this potential in a hard-box: $V(|x| \ge 1) =\infty $ and in a soft-box: $V(|x|\ge 1)=0$. In the former case, we find real discrete spectrum and the exceptional points of the potential. The asymptotic eigenvalues behave as $E_n \sim n^2.$ The solvable purely imaginary PT-symmetric potentials vanishing asymptotically known so far do not have real discrete spectrum. Our solvable soft-box potential possesses two real negative discrete eigenvalues if $|g|<(1.22330447)$. The soft-box potential turns out to b…
The dilation method is a practical way to experimentally simulate non-Hermitian, especially $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum systems. However, the time-dependent dilation problem cannot be explicitly solved in general. In this paper, we present a simple yet non-trivial exactly solvable dilation problem with two dimensional time-dependent $\cal PT$-symmetric Hamiltonian. Our system is initially set in the unbroken $\cal PT$-symmetric phase and later goes across the so-called exceptional point and enters the broken $\cal PT$-symmetric phase. For this system, the dilated Hamiltonian and the evolution …
A non-unitary version of quantum scattering is studied via an exactly solvable toy model. The model is merely asymptotically local since the smooth path of the coordinate is admitted complex in the non-asymptotic domain. At any real angular-momentum-like parameter the reflection R and transmission T are shown to change with the winding number (i.e., topology) of the path. The points of unitarity appear related to the points of existence of quantum-knot bound states.
The O(N) invariant quartic anharmonic oscillator is shown to be exactly solvable if the interaction parameter satisfies special conditions. The problem is directly related to that of a quantum double well anharmonic oscillator in an external field. A finite dimensional matrix equation for the problem is constructed explicitly, along with analytical expressions for some excited states in the system. The corresponding Niven equations for determining the polynomial solutions for the problem are given.
It is well known that using the conventional non-Hermitian but ${\cal PT}-$symmetric Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with real spectrum one can realize the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) process in an exceptional-point limit of order $N$. Such an exactly solvable simulation of the BEC-type phase transition is, unfortunately, incomplete because the standard version of the model only offers an extreme form of the limit characterized by a minimal geometric multiplicity $K=1$. In our paper we describe a rescaled and partitioned direct-sum modification of the linear version of the Bose-Hubbard model whi…
In this work, a spin $\frac 12$ relativistic particle described by a generalized potential containing both the Coulomb potential and a Lorentz scalar potential in Dirac equation is investigated in terms of the generalized ladder operators from supersymmetry in quantum mechanics. This formalism is applied for the generalized Dirac-Coulomb problem, which is an exactly solvable potential in relativistic quantum mechanics. We obtain the energy eigenvalues and calculate explicitly the energy eigenfunctions for the ground state and the first excited state.
The first and second-order supersymmetry transformations can be used to manipulate one or two energy levels of the initial spectrum when generating new exactly solvable Hamiltonians from a given initial potential. In this paper, we will construct the first and second-order supersymmetric partners of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential. Firstly, it is identified a set of solutions of the initial stationary Schrödinger equation which are appropriate for implementing in a simple way non-singular transformations, without inducing new singularities in the built potential. Then, the way the spec…
We develop a systematic approach to construct novel completely solvable rational potentials. Second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics dictates the latter to be isospectral to some well-studied quantum systems. $\cal PT$ symmetry may facilitate reconciling our approach to the requirement that the rationally-extended potentials be singularity free. Some examples are shown.
We propose a new solvable one-dimensional complex PT-symmetric potential as $V(x)= ig~ \mbox{sgn}(x)~ |1-\exp(2|x|/a)|$ and study the spectrum of $H=-d^2/dx^2+V(x)$. For smaller values of $a,g <1$, there is a finite number of real discrete eigenvalues. As $a$ and $g$ increase, there exist exceptional points (EPs), $g_n$ (for fixed values of $a$) causing a scarcity of real discrete eigenvalues, but there exists at least one. We also show these real discrete eigenvalues as poles of reflection coefficient. We find that the energy-eigenstates $ψ_n(x)$ satisfy (1): PT$ψ_n(x)=1 ψ_n(x)$ and (2): PT$ψ…
We recall the importance of recognizing the different mathematical nature of various concepts relating to PT-symmetric quantum theories. After clarifying the relation between supersymmetry and pseudo-supersymmetry, we prove generically that nonlinear pseudo-supersymmetry, recently proposed by Sinha and Roy, is just a special case of N-fold supersymmetry. In particular, we show that all the models constructed by these authors have type A 2-fold supersymmetry. Furthermore, we prove that an arbitrary one-body quantum Hamiltonian which admits two (local) solutions in closed form belongs to type A …
At the lower edge of the energy continuum the birth of an isolated quantum bound state is studied as caused by an infinitesimally small change of the interaction. In our model a single, asymptotically free massive quantum particle is assumed moving along a discretized real line of coordinates, $x \in \mathbb{Z}$. The motion is assumed controlled by a weakly nonlocal 2J-parametric external potential which is non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric. Mathematically, the bound states are then reinterpreted as Sturmians, i.e., the bound-state energy is treated as a variable real parameter while the value of…
For applications to quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger equations in quantum mechanics, we consider the general conditions that have to be satisfied by the coefficients of a second-order differential equation with at most $k+1$ singular points in order that this equation has particular solutions that are $n$th-degree polynomials. In a first approach, we show that such conditions involve $k-2$ integration constants, which satisfy a system of linear equations whose coefficients can be written in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials in the polynomial solution roots whenver such roots are all …
We construct a new family of quasi-solvable and N-fold supersymmetric quantum systems where each Hamiltonian preserves an exceptional polynomial subspace of codimension 2. We show that the family includes as a particular case the recently reported rational radial oscillator potential whose eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the X_2-Laguerre polynomials of the second kind. In addition, we find that the two kinds of the X_2-Laguerre polynomials are ingeniously connected with each other by the N-fold supercharge.
We made use of supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics to find a condition under which the Stark effect problem for a polar and polarizable closed-shell diatomic molecule subject to collinear electrostatic and nonresonant radiative fields becomes exactly solvable. The condition, $Δω= \frac{ω^2}{4 (m+1)^2}$, connects values of the dimensionless parameters $ω$ and $Δω$ that characterize the strengths of the permanent and induced dipole interactions of the molecule with the respective fields. The exact solutions are obtained for the $|\tilde{J}=m,m;ω,Δω>$ family of "stretched" states. The field-f…
We study a reflectionless PT-symmetric quantum system described by the pair of complexified Scarf II potentials mutually displaced in the half of their pure imaginary period. Analyzing the rich set of intertwining discrete symmetries of the pair, we find an exotic supersymmetric structure based on three matrix differential operators that encode all the properties of the system, including its reflectionless (finite-gap) nature. The structure we revealed particularly sheds new light on the splitting of the discrete states into two families, related to the bound and resonance states in Hermitian …
Morse potential $V_M(x)= g^2\exp (2x)-g(2h+1)\exp(x)$ is defined on the full line, $-\infty<x<\infty$ and it defines an exactly solvable 1-d quantum mechanical system with finitely many discrete eigenstates. By taking its right half $0\le x<\infty$ and glueing it with the left half of its mirror image $V_M(-x)$, $-\infty<x\le0$, the symmetric Morse potential $V(x)= g^2\exp (2|x|)-g(2h+1)\exp(|x|)$ is obtained. The quantum mechanical system of this piecewise analytic potential has infinitely many discrete eigenstates with the corresponding eigenfunctions given by the Whittaker W function. The e…
