Motivated by the existence of bi-Hamiltonian classical systems and the correspondence principle, in this paper we analyze the problem of finding
Hermitian scalar products which turn a given flow on a Hilbert space into a unitary one. We show how different invariant Hermitian scalar products give rise to different descriptions of a quantum system in the Ehrenfest and
Heisenberg picture.
Hypergraph states form a family of multiparticle quantum states that generalizes cluster states and graph states. We study the action and graphical representation of nonlocal unitary transformations between hypergraph states. This leads to a generalization of local complementation and graphical rules for various gates, such as the CNOT gate and the Toffoli gate. As an application, we show that already for five qubits local Pauli operations are not sufficient to check local equivalence of hypergraph states. Furthermore, we use our rules to construct entanglement witnesses for three-uniform hype…
We consider the unitary and the anti--unitary operator realizations of two important genuine quantum gates that transform elements of the computational basis of into superpositions: the square root of the identity and the square root of the negation.
We discuss the dynamical quantum systems which turn out to be bi-unitary with respect to the same alternative Hermitian structures in a infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We give a necessary and sufficient condition so that the Hermitian structures are in generic position. Finally the transformations of the bi-unitary group are explicitly obtained.
We propose an alternative approach for the construction of the unitary matrix which performs generalized unitary rotations of the system consisting of independent identical subsystems (for example spin system). This matrix, when applied to the system, results in a change of degrees of freedom, uncovering the information hidden in non-local degrees of freedom. This information can be used, inter alia, to study the structure of entangled states, their classification and may be useful for construction of quantum algorithms.
Representation of classical dynamics by unitary transformations has been used to develop unified description of hybrid classical-quantum systems with particular type of interaction, and to formulate abstract systems interpolating between classical and quantum ones. We solved the problem of unitary description of two interpolating systems with general potential interaction. The general solution is used to show that with arbitrary potential interaction between the two interpolating systems the evolution of the so called unobservable variables is decoupled from that of the observable ones if and …
Unitary operators are essential to quantum mechanics, however for discrete systems larger than a qubit, it is difficult to express them in a self-contained way. This report presents just such a description, providing a compact, useful parameterization, with examples of physical applications.
We consider arbitrary mixed state in unitary evolution and provide a comprehensive description of corresponding geometric phase in which two different points of view prevailing currently can be unified. Introducing an ancillary system and considering the purification of given mixed state, we find that different results of mixed state geometric phase correspond to different choice of the representation of Hilbert space of the ancilla. Moreover we demonstrate that in order to obtain Uhlmann's geometric phase it is not necessary to resort to the unitary evolution of ancilla.
We study equivalence determination of unitary operations, a task analogous to quantum state discrimination. The candidate states are replaced by unitary operations given as a quantum sample, i.e., a black-box device implementing a candidate unitary operation, and the discrimination target becomes another black-box. The task is an instance of higher-order quantum computation with the black-boxes as input. The optimal error probability is calculated by semidefinite programs. Arbitrary quantum operations applied between the black-boxes in a general protocol provide advantages over protocols restr…
We analyze some features of alternative Hermitian and quasi-Hermitian quantum descriptions of simple and bipartite compound systems. We show that alternative descriptions of two interacting subsystems are possible if and only if the metric operator of the compound system can be obtained as tensor product of positive operators on component spaces. Some examples also show that such property could be strictly connected with symmetry properties of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.
An approach to the simulation of locally interacting systems is demonstrated and assayed. The proposal is built upon the concept of folding of bosonic modes previously introduced in the context of linear dynamics and can be seen as an alternative to Trotter-Susuki expansion in studies of quantum propagation based on tensor states. It is shown that evolution as well as ground state computations can be implemented and that test simulations deliver comparatively accurate results. The whole analysis provides insight into the way well-known quantum precursors affect mean values and fluctuations in …
We characterize the quasianti-Hermitian quaternionic operators in QQM by means of their spectra; moreover, we state a necessary and sufficient condition for a set of quasianti-Hermitian quaternionic operators to be anti-Hermitian with respect to a uniquely defined positive scalar product in a infinite dimensional (right) quaternionic Hilbert space. According to such results we obtain two alternative descriptions of a quantum optical physical system, in the realm of quaternionic quantum mechanics, while no alternative can exist in complex quantum mechanics, and we discuss some differences betwe…
We analyze a discrimination problem of a single-qubit unitary gate with two candidates, where the candidates are not provided with their classical description, but their quantum sample is. More precisely, there are three unitary quantum gates -- one target and one sample for each of the two candidates -- whose classical description is unknown except for their dimension. The target gate is chosen equally among the candidates. We obtain the optimal protocol that maximizes the expected success probability, assuming the Haar distribution for the candidates. This problem is originally introduced in…
The density matrix of composite spin system is discussed in relation to the adjoint representation of unitary group U(n). The entanglement structure is introduced as an additional ingredient to the description of the linear space carrying the adjoint representation. Positive maps of density operator are related to random matrices. The tomographic probability description of quantum states is used to formulate the problem of separability and entanglement as the condition for joint probability distribution of several random variables represented as the convex sum of products of probabilities of r…
We argue here that, as it happens in Classical and Quantum Mechanics, where it has been proven that alternative Hamiltonian descriptions can be compatible with a given set of equations of motion, the same holds true in the realm of Statistical Mechanics, i.e. that alternative Hamiltonian descriptions do lead to the same thermodynamical description of any physical system.
We provide a new perspective on non-Hermitian evolution in quantum mechanics by emphasizing the same method as in the Hermitian quantum evolution. We first give a precise description of the non unitary evolution, and collecting the basic results around it and postulating the norm preserving. This cautionary postulate imposing that the time evolution of a non Hermitian quantum system preserves the inner products between the associated states must not be read naively. We also give an example showing that the solutions of time-dependent non Hermitian Hamiltonian systems given by a linear combinat…
A complex conjugation of unitary quantum map is a second-order map (supermap) that maps a unitary operator $U$ to its complex conjugate $U^*$. First, we present a deterministic quantum protocol that universally implements the complex conjugation supermap when we are given a blackbox quantum circuit, guaranteed to implement some unitary operation, whose only known description is its dimension. We then discuss the complex conjugation supermap in the context of entanglement theory and derive a conjugation-based expression of the $G$-concurrence. Finally, we present a physical process involving id…
Undoing a unitary operation, $i.e$. reversing its action, is the task of canceling the effects of a unitary evolution on a quantum system, and it may be easily achieved when the unitary is known. Given a unitary operation without any specific description, however, it is a hard and challenging task to realize the inverse operation. Recently, a universal quantum circuit has been proposed [Phys.Rev.Lett. 123, 210502 (2019)] to undo an arbitrary unknown $d$-dimensional unitary $U$ by implementing its inverse with a certain probability. In this letter, we report the experimental reversing of three …
We give a pedagogical presentation of the irreducible unitary representations of $\mathbb{C}^4\rtimes\mathbf{Spin}(4,\mathbb{C})$, that is, of the universal cover of the complexified Poincaré group $\mathbb{C}^4\rtimes\mathbf{SO}(4,\mathbb{C})$. These representations were first investigated by Roffman in 1967. We provide a modern formulation of his results together with some facts from the general Wigner-Mackey theory which are relevant in this context. Moreover, we discuss different ways to realize these representations and, in the case of a non-zero "complex mass", we give a detailed constru…
According to Wigner theorem, transformations of quantum states which preserve the probabilities are either unitary or antiunitary. This short communication presents an elementary proof of this theorem that significantly departs from the numerous ones already existing in the literature. The main line of the argument remains valid even in quantum field theory where Hilbert spaces are non-separable.
The purpose of this comment is to show that a reinterpretation of the results from the Letter: "Physics and Metaphysics of Wigner's Friends: Even performed pre-measurements have no results" allows for reaching the conclusion "pre-measurements have no resul" [arXiv:2003.07464] based only on postulates of quantum mechanics without additional assumptions on irreversibility. Additionally, with supplementary reasoning based on Bell's theorem, one can show that unitary decoherence cannot be solely responsible for the quantum-to-classical transition, and an additional irreversibility model is require…
We develop a unitary dependence theory to characterize the behaviors of quantum circuits and states in terms of how quantum gates manipulate qubits and determine their measurement probabilities. A qubit has dependence on a 1-qubit unitary gate if its measurement probabilities depend on the parameters of the gate. A 1-qubit unitary creates such a dependence onto the target qubit, and a CNOT gate copies all the dependences from the control qubit to the target qubit. The complete dependence picture of the output state details the connections qubits may have when being manipulated or measured. Com…
In this paper we introduce an alternative approach to studying the evolution of a quantum harmonic oscillator subject to an arbitrary time dependent force. With the purpose of finding the evolution operator, certain unitary transformations are applied successively to Schrödinger's equation reducing it to its simplest form. Therefore, instead of solving the original Schrödinger's partial differential equation in time and space the problem is replaced by a system of ordinary differential equations. From the obtained evolution operator we workout the propagator. Even though we illustrate the use …
We discuss transformations generated by dynamical quantum systems which are bi-unitary, i.e. unitary with respect to a pair of Hermitian structures on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We introduce the notion of Hermitian structures in generic relative position. We provide few necessary and sufficient conditions for two Hermitian structures to be in generic relative position to better illustrate the relevance of this notion. The group of bi-unitary transformations is considered in both the generic and non-generic case. Finally, we generalize the analysis to real Hilbert spaces and…
For the description of quantum evolution, the use of a manifestly time-dependent quantum Hamiltonian $\mathfrak{h}(t) =\mathfrak{h}^\dagger(t)$ is shown equivalent to the work with its simplified, time-independent alternative $G\neq G^\dagger$. A tradeoff analysis is performed recommending the latter option. The physical unitarity requirement is shown fulfilled in a suitable ad hoc representation of Hilbert space.
We present an alternative description of magnetic monopoles by lifting quantum mechanics from 3-dimensional space into a one with 2 complex dimensions. Magnetic monopoles are realized as a generalization of the considered states. Usual algebraic relations and magnetic fields describing monopoles are reproduced, with the Dirac quantization condition satisfied naturally.
We study unitary evolution of bipartite entanglement in a circuit with nearest-neighbor random gates. Deriving a compact non-unitary description of purity dynamics on qudits we find a sudden transition in the purity relaxation rate the origin of which is in the underlying boundary localized eigenmodes -- the skin effect. We provide the full solution of the problem, being one of the simplest iterations of two-site matrices, namely, that each is a sum of only two projectors. This leads to rich dynamics influenced by the Jordan normal form of the kernel and, most importantly, a spectrum that is c…
We offer a new Hamiltonian formulation of the classical Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator and consider its canonical quantization. We show that for the non-degenerate case where the frequencies differ, the quantum Hamiltonian operator is a Hermitian operator with a positive spectrum, i.e., the quantum system is both stable and unitary. A consistent description of the degenerate case based on a Hamiltonian that is quadratic in momenta requires its analytic continuation into a complex Hamiltonian system possessing a generalized PT-symmetry (an involutive antilinear symmetry). We devise a real descriptio…
Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states are those multipartite quantum states that carry absolute maximum entanglement in all possible partitions. AME states are known to play a relevant role in multipartite teleportation, in quantum secret sharing and they provide the basis novel tensor networks related to holography. We present alternative constructions of AME states and show their link with combinatorial designs. We also analyze a key property of AME, namely their relation to tensors that can be understood as unitary transformations in every of its bi-partitions. We call this property m…
The controlled-NOT gate of qubit quantum circuits is shown to be described in terms of a Hopf algebra. Accordingly, any qubit quantum circuit can be expressed as the Hopf algebraic computations and unitary transformations on one qubit.
The unitary crisis for black holes indicates an apparent need to modify local quantum field theory. This paper explores the idea that quantum mechanics and in particular unitarity are fundamental principles, but at the price of familiar locality. Thus, one should seek to parameterize unitary evolution, extending the field theory description of black holes, such that their quantum information is transferred to the external state. This discussion is set in a broader framework of unitary evolution acting on Hilbert spaces comprising subsystems. Here, various constraints can be placed on the dynam…
In complete analogy with the classical situation (which is briefly reviewed) it is possible to define bi-Hamiltonian descriptions for Quantum systems. We also analyze compatible Hermitian structures in full analogy with compatible Poisson structures.
Building upon our previous work, on graphical representation of a quantum state by signless Laplacian matrix, we pose the following question. If a local unitary operation is applied to a quantum state, represented by a signless Laplacian matrix, what would be the corresponding graph and how does one implement local unitary transformations graphically? We answer this question by developing the notion of local unitary equivalent graphs. We illustrate our method by a few, well known, local unitary transformations implemented by single-qubit Pauli and Hadamard gates. We also show how graph switchi…

Variational quantum algorithms are a promising hybrid framework for solving chemistry and physics problems with broad applicability to optimization as well. They are particularly well suited for noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) computers. In this paper, we describe the unitary block optimization scheme (UBOS) and apply it to two variational quantum algorithms: the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and variational time evolution. The goal of VQE is to optimize a classically intractable parameterized quantum wave function to target a physical state of a Hamiltonian or solve an optimiz…
Electronic structure methods typically benefit from symmetry breaking and restoration, specially in the strong correlation regime. The same goes for Ansätze on a quantum computer. We develop a unitary coupled cluster method on the antisymmetrized geminal power (AGP) -- a state formally equivalent to the number-projected Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer wavefunction. We demonstrate our method for the single-band Fermi--Hubbard Hamiltonian in one and two dimensions. We also explore post-selection as a state preparation step to obtain correlated AGP and prove that it scales no worse than $\mathcal{O}(…
Columns of d^2 x N matrices are shown to create different sets of N operators acting on $d$-dimensional Hilbert space. This construction corresponds to a formalism of the star-product of operator symbols. The known bases are shown to be partial cases of generic formulas derived by using d^2 x N matrices as a source for constructing arbitrary bases. The known examples of the SIC-POVM, MUBs, and the phase-space description of qubit states are considered from the viewpoint of the developed unified approach. Star-product schemes are classified with respect to associated d^2 x N matrices. In partic…
Topological quantum computation with Fibonacci anyons relies on the possibility of efficiently generating unitary transformations upon pseudoparticles braiding. The crucial fact that such set of braids has a dense image in the unitary operations space is well known; in addition, the Solovay-Kitaev algorithm allows to approach a given unitary operation to any desired accuracy. In this paper, the latter task is fulfilled with an alternative method, in the SU(2) case, based on a generalization of the geodesic dome construction to higher dimension.
Recent works have investigated the emergence of a new kind of random matrix behaviour in unitary dynamics following a quantum quench. Starting from a time-evolved state, an ensemble of pure states supported on a small subsystem can be generated by performing projective measurements on the remainder of the system, leading to a projected ensemble. In chaotic quantum systems it was conjectured that such projected ensembles become indistinguishable from the uniform Haar-random ensemble and lead to a quantum state design. Exact results were recently presented by Ho and Choi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 0…
