We discuss transformations generated by dynamical quantum systems which are bi-unitary, i.e. unitary with respect to a pair of Hermitian structures on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We introduce the notion of Hermitian structures in generic relative position. We provide few necessary and sufficient conditions for two Hermitian structures to be in generic relative position to better illustrate the relevance of this notion. The group of bi-unitary transformations is considered in both the generic and non-generic case. Finally, we generalize the analysis to real Hilbert spaces and extend to infinite dimensions results already available in the framework of finite-dimensional linear bi-Hamiltonian systems.
We explicitly construct the Rigged Hilbert Space (RHS) of the free Hamiltonian $H_0$. The construction of the RHS of $H_0$ provides yet another opportunity to see that when continuous spectrum is present, the solutions of the Schrodinger equation lie in a RHS rather than just in a Hilbert space.
The so-called equation of motion method is useful to obtain the explicit form of the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of certain non self-adjoint bosonic Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues. These operators can be diagonalized when they are expressed in terms of pseudo-bosons, which do not behave as ordinary bosons under the adjoint transformation, but obey the Weil-Heisenberg commutation relations.
A new kind of symmetry behaviour introduced as partialPT-symmetry is investigated in a typical Fock space setting understood as a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). The same kind of symmetry is understood for a nonhermitian Bose-Hubbard type Hamiltonian involving two boson operators as well as its eigenstates. The phenomenon of symmetry breaking has also been considered
We construct a formally self-adjoint Hamiltonian whose eigenvalues correspond to the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We consider a two-dimensional Hamiltonian which couples the Berry-Keating Hamiltonian to the number operator on the half-line via a unitary transformation. We demonstrate that the unitary operator, which is composed of squeeze (dilation) operators and an exponential of the number operator, confines the eigenfunction of the Hamiltonian to one dimension as the squeezing parameter tends towards infinity. The Riemann zeta function appears at the boundary of the result…
By application of the coinduction method as well as Magri method to the ideal of real Hilbert-Schmidt operators we construct the hierarchies of integrable Hamiltonian systems on the Banach Lie-Poisson spaces which consist of these type of operators. We also discuss their algebraic and analytic properties as well as solve them in dimensions N=2,3,4.
In a recent paper we have introduced several possible inequivalent descriptions of the dynamics and of the transition probabilities of a quantum system when its Hamiltonian is not self-adjoint. Our analysis was carried out in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is useful, but quite restrictive since many physically relevant quantum systems live in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. In this paper we consider this situation, and we discuss some applications to well known models, introduced in the literature in recent years: the extended harmonic oscillator, the Swanson model and a generali…
We discuss the alternative algebraic structures on the manifold of quantum states arising from alternative Hermitian structures associated with quantum bi-Hamiltonian systems. We also consider the consequences at the level of the Heisenberg picture in terms of deformations of the associative product on the space of observables.
It is shown that the natural framework for the solutions of any Schrodinger equation whose spectrum has a continuous part is the Rigged Hilbert Space rather than just the Hilbert space. The difficulties of using only the Hilbert space to handle unbounded Schrodinger Hamiltonians whose spectrum has a continuous part are disclosed. Those difficulties are overcome by using an appropriate Rigged Hilbert Space (RHS). The RHS is able to associate an eigenket to each energy in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, regardless of whether the energy belongs to the discrete or to the continuous part of the sp…
The present paper gives an overview of the recent developments in the description of critical behavior for Hamiltonian perturbations of hyperbolic and elliptic systems of partial differential equations. It was conjectured that this behavior can be described in terms of distinguished Painlevé transcendents, which are universal in the sense that they are, to some extent, independent of the equation and the initial data. We will consider several examples of well-known integrable equations that are expected to show this type of Painlevé behavior near critical points. The Riemann-Hilbert method is …
In complete analogy with the classical situation (which is briefly reviewed) it is possible to define bi-Hamiltonian descriptions for Quantum systems. We also analyze compatible Hermitian structures in full analogy with compatible Poisson structures.
We discuss the dynamical quantum systems which turn out to be bi-unitary with respect to the same alternative Hermitian structures in a infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We give a necessary and sufficient condition so that the Hermitian structures are in generic position. Finally the transformations of the bi-unitary group are explicitly obtained.
A non-Hermitian operator $H$ defined in a Hilbert space with inner product $\langle\cdot|\cdot\rangle$ may serve as the Hamiltonian for a unitary quantum system, if it is $η$-pseudo-Hermitian for a metric operator (positive-definite automorphism) $η$. The latter defines the inner product $\langle \cdot|η\cdot\rangle $ of the physical Hilbert space $\mathscr{H} _η$ of the system. For situations where some of the eigenstates of $H$ depend on time, $η$ becomes time-dependent. Therefore the system has a non-stationary Hilbert space. Such quantum systems, which are also encountered in the study of …
This series of papers is devoted to an open-ended project aimed at the solution of Hilbert's sixth problem (concerning joint axiomatization of physics and probability theory) proposed to be constructed in the framework of an all-embracing mechanics. In this first paper, the bare skeleton of such a mechanics is constructed in the form of noncommutative Hamiltonian mechanics (NHM) which combines elements of noncommutative symplectic geometry and noncommutative probability in the framework of topological superalgebras; it includes, besides NHM basics, a treatment of Lie group actions in NHM and n…
A quantum theory in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space can be geometrically formulated as a proper Hamiltonian theory as explained in [2, 3, 7, 8]. From this point of view a quantum system can be described in a classical-like framework where quantum dynamics is represented by a Hamiltonian flow in the phase space given by projective Hilbert space. This paper is devoted to investigate how the notion of accessibility algebra from classical control theory can be applied within geometric Hamiltonian formulation of Quanum Mechanics to study controllability of a quantum system. A new characterizatio…
I have made an ample study of one dimensional quantum oscillators, ranging from logarithmic to exponential potentials. I have found that the eigenvalues of the hamiltonian of the oscillator with the limiting (approachissimo) harmonic potential (~ p(x)2) maps the zeros of the Riemann function height up in the Riemann line. This is the potential created by the field of J(x) that is the Riemann generator of the prime number counting function, p(x), that in turn can be defined by an integral transformation of the Riemann zeta function. This plays the role of the spring strength of the quantum limi…
The ability of the Rigged Hilbert Space formalism to deal with continuous spectrum is demonstrated within the example of the square barrier potential. The non-square integrable solutions of the time-independent Schrodinger equation are used to define Dirac kets, which are (generalized) eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian. These Dirac kets are antilinear functionals over the space of physical wave functions. They are also basis vectors that expand any physical wave function in a Dirac basis vector expansion. It is shown that an acceptable physical wave function must fulfill stronger conditions than…
In single Hilbert space, Pauli's well-known theorem implies that the existence of a self-adjoint time operator canonically conjugate to a given Hamiltonian signifies that the time operator and the Hamiltonian possess completely continuous spectra spanning the entire real line. Thus the conclusion that there exists no self-adjoint time operator conjugate to a semibounded or discrete Hamiltonian despite some well-known illustrative counterexamples. In this paper we evaluate Pauli's theorem against the single Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics, and consequently show the consistency of…
Two non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian systems are reconsidered by means of the algebraic method which was originally proposed for the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems rather than for the PT-symmetric ones. Compared with the way converting a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to its Hermitian counterpart, this method has the merit that keeps the Hilbert space of the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian unchanged. In order to give the positive definite inner product for the PT-symmetric systems, a new operator V, instead of C, can be introduced. The operator V has the similar function to the o…
A non-Hermitian operator may serve as the Hamiltonian for a unitary quantum system, if we can modify the Hilbert space of state vectors of the system so that it turns into a Hermitian operator. If this operator is time-dependent, the modified Hilbert space is generally time-dependent. This in turn leads to a generic conflict between the condition that the Hamiltonian is an observable of the system and that it generates a unitary time-evolution via the standard Schrödinger equation. We propose a geometric framework for addressing this problem. In particular we show that the Hamiltonian operator…
Ostrogradsky's method allows one to construct Hamiltonian formulation for a higher derivative system. An application of this approach to the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator yields the Hamiltonian which is unbounded from below. This leads to the ghost problem in quantum theory. In order to avoid this nasty feature, the technique previously developed in [Acta Phys. Polon. B 36 (2005) 2115] is used to construct an alternative Hamiltonian formulation for the multidimensional Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator of arbitrary even order with distinct frequencies of oscillation. This construction is also generalized …
It is shown that if the C operator for a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with simple eigenvalues is not unique, then it is unbounded. Apart from the special cases of finite-matrix Hamiltonians and Hamiltonians generated by differential expressions with PT-symmetric point interactions, the usual situation is that the C operator is unbounded. The fact that the C operator is unbounded is significant because, while there is a formal equivalence between a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian and a conventionally Hermitian Hamiltonian in the sense that the two Hamiltonians are isospectral, the Hilbert spaces are inequ…
Supmech, which is noncommutative Hamiltonian mechanics \linebreak (NHM) (developed in paper I) with two extra ingredients : positive observable valued measures (PObVMs) [which serve to connect state-induced expectation values and classical probabilities] and the `CC condition' [which stipulates that the sets of observables and pure states be mutually separating] is proposed as a universal mechanics potentially covering all physical phenomena. It facilitates development of an autonomous formalism for quantum mechanics. Quantum systems, defined algebraically as supmech Hamiltonian systems with n…
Finite-dimensional Quantum Mechanics can be geometrically formulated as a proper classical-like Hamiltonian theory in a projective Hilbert space. The description of composite quantum systems within the geometric Hamiltonian framework is discussed in this paper. As summarized in the first part of this work, in the Hamiltonian formulation the phase space of a quantum system is the Kahler manifold given by the complex projective space P(H) of the Hilbert space H of the considered quantum theory. However the phase space of a bipartite system must be given by the projective space of the tensor prod…
According to the "Hilbert Space Fundamentalism" Thesis, all features of a physical system, including the 3D-space, a preferred basis, and factorization into subsystems, uniquely emerge from the state vector and the Hamiltonian alone. I give a simplified account of the proof from arXiv:2102.08620 showing that such emerging structures cannot be both unique and physically relevant.
PT-symmetric quantum mechanics is an alternative formulation of quantum mechanics in which the mathematical axiom of Hermiticity (transpose and complex conjugate) is replaced by the physically transparent condition of space-time reflection symmetry (PT-symmetry). A Hamiltonian H is said to be PT-symmetric if it commutes with the operator PT. The key point of PT-symmetric quantum theory is to build a new positive definite inner product on the given Hilbert space so that the given Hamiltonian is Hermitian with respect to the new inner product. The aim of this note is to give further mathematical…
The exact solvability and impressive pedagogical implementation of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators make it a problem of great physical relevance and the most fundamental one in quantum mechanics. So would be the position dependent mass oscillator for the position dependent mass quantum mechanics. We, hereby, construct the position dependent mass creation and annihilation operators for the position dependent mass oscillator via two different approaches. First, via von Roos position dependent mass Hamiltonian and show that the commutation relation between the position…
We study the Dirac-Maxwell model quantized in the Lorenz gauge. In this gauge, the space of quantum mechanical state vectors inevitably be an indefinite metric vector space so that the canonical commutation relation (CCR) is realized in a Lorentz covariant manner. In order to obtain a physical subspace in which no negative norm state exists, the method first proposed by Gupta and Bleuler is applied with mathematical rigor. It is proved that a suitably defined physical subspace has a positive semi-definit metric, and naturally induces a physical Hilbert space with a positive definite metric. Th…
Non-hermitian quantum graphs possessing real (i.e., in principle, observable) spectra are studied via their discretization. The discretized Hamiltonians are assigned, constructively, an elementary pseudometric and/or a more complicated metric. Both these constructions make the Hamiltonian Hermitian, respectively, in an auxiliary (Krein or Pontryagin) vector space or in a less friendly (but more useful) Hilbert space of quantum mechanics.
In conventional Schrödinger representation the unitarity of the evolution of bound states is guaranteed by the Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian. A non-unitary isospectral simplification of the Hamiltonian, $\mathfrak{h} \to H=Ω\,\mathfrak{h}\,Ω\neq H^\dagger$ induces the change ${\cal L} \to {\cal K}$ of the Hilbert space of states, reflected by the loss of the Hermiticity of $H\neq H^\dagger$. In such a reformulation of the theory the introduction of an {\it ad hoc} inner-product metric reconverts ${\cal K}$ into the third, correct physical Hilbert space ${\cal H}$, unitarily equivalent to ${\c…
The quantization of systems with a position dependent mass (PDM) is studied. We present a method that starts with the study of the existence of Killing vector fields for the PDM geodesic motion (Lagrangian with a PDM kinetic term but without any potential) and the construction of the associated Noether momenta. Then the method considers, as the appropriate Hilbert space, the space of functions that are square integrable with respect to a measure related with the PDM and, after that, it establishes the quantization, not of the canonical momenta $p$, but of the Noether momenta $P$ instead. The q…
In the popular ${\cal PT}-$symmetry-based formulation of quantum mechanics of closed systems one can build unitary models using non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (i.e., $H \neq H^\dagger$) which are Hermitizable (so that one can write, simultaneously, $H = H^\ddagger$). The essence of the trick is that the reference Hilbert space $\cal R$ (in which we use the conventional inner product $\langle ψ_a|ψ_b\rangle$ and write $H \neq H^\dagger$) is declared unphysical. The necessary Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian $H = H^\ddagger$ can be then achieved by the mere metric-mediated amendment $\langle ψ_a|Θ|ψ_b…
A class of vector coherent states is derived with multiple of matrices as vectors in a Hilbert space, where the Hilbert space is taken to be the tensor product of several other Hilbert spaces. As examples vector coherent states with multiple of quaternions and octonions are given. The resulting generalized oscillator algebra is briefly discussed. Further, vector coherent states for a tensored Hamiltonian system are obtained by the same method. As particular cases, coherent states are obtained for tensored Jaynes-Cummings type Hamiltonians and for a two-level two-mode generalization of the Jayn…
We develop a complete Dirac's canonical analysis for an alternative action that yields Maxwell's four-dimensional equations of motion. We study in detail the full symmetries of the action by following all steps of Dirac's method in order to obtain a detailed description of symmetries. Our results indicate that such an action does not have the same symmetries than Maxwell theory, namely, the model is not a gauge theory and the number of physical degrees of freedom are different.
Under natural restrictions it is known that a nonlinear Schrödinger equation is a Hamiltonian PDE which defines a symplectic flow on a symplectic Hilbert space preserving the Hilbert norm. When the potential is one-periodic in time and after passing to the projectivization, it makes sense to ask whether the natural analogue of the Arnold conjecture holds. By employing methods from non-standard model theory we show how Hamiltonian Floer theory can be generalized from finite to infinite dimensions. While our proof entirely builds on finite-dimensional results, we do not ask for any prior knowled…
Different constructions for Hilbert state space for constrained systems are investigated. Properties of Gaussian states analogous to quantum mechanical Gaussian wave functions are studied. Their evolution for quadratic Hamiltonian case are discussed. A notion of Maslov complex germ is introduced for systems with linear constraints.
In the companion paper we motivated a renormalisation flow on Osterwalder-Schrader data (OS-data) consisting of 1. a Hilbert space, 2. a cyclic vacuum and 3. a Hamiltonian annihilating that vacuum. As the name suggests, the motivation was via the OS reconstruction theorem which allows to reconstruct the OS data from an OS measure satisfying (a subset of) the OS axioms, in particular reflection positivity. The guiding principle was to map the usual Wilsonian path integral renormalisation flow onto a flow of the corresponding OS data. We showed that this induced flow on the OS data has an unwant…
It is shown that if a non-autonomous system of $2n$ first-order ordinary differential equations is expressed in the form of the Hamilton equations in terms of two different sets of coordinates, $(q_{i}, p_{i})$ and $(Q_{i}, P_{i})$, then the determinant and the trace of any power of a certain matrix formed by the Poisson brackets of the $Q_{i}, P_{i}$ with respect to $q_{i}, p_{i}$, are constants of motion.
Quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians over a one-particle Hilbert space can be described by a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian on a particle-hole Hilbert space. In general, the BdG Hamiltonian is not selfadjoint, but only $J$-selfadjoint on the particle-hole space viewed as a Krein space. Nevertheless, its energy bands can have non-trivial topological invariants like Chern numbers or winding numbers. By a thorough analysis for tight-binding models, it is proved that these invariants lead to bosonic edge modes which are robust to a large class of possibly disordered perturbations. Furthermore, g…
We describe the essential spectrum and prove the Mourre estimate for quantum particle systems interacting through k-body forces and creation-annihilation processes which do not preserve the number of particles. For this we compute the ``Hamiltonian algebra'' of the system, i.e. the C*-algebra C generated by the Hamiltonians we want to study, and show that, as in the N-body case, it is graded by a semilattice. Hilbert C*-modules graded by semilattices are involved in the construction of C. For example, if we start with an N-body system whose Hamiltonian algebra is B and then we add field type c…
A physical subspace and physical Hilbert space associated with asymptotic fields of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics are constructed through the Gupta-Bleuler procedure. Asymptotic completeness is shown and a physical Hamiltonian is defined on the physical Hilbert space.
The quantum many-body bound-state problem in its computationally successful coupled cluster method (CCM) representation is reconsidered. In conventional practice one factorizes the ground-state wave functions $|Ψ\rangle= e^S |Φ\rangle$ which live in the "physical" Hilbert space ${\cal H}^{(P)}$ using an elementary ansatz for $|Φ\rangle$ plus a formal expansion of $S$ in an operator basis of multi-configurational creation operators. In our paper a reinterpretation of the method is proposed. Using parallels between the CCM and the so called quasi-Hermitian, alias three-Hilbert-space (THS), quant…
We define and analyze various generalizations of the punctual Hilbert scheme of the plane, associated to complex or real Lie algebras. Out of these, we construct new geometric structures on surfaces whose moduli spaces share multiple properties with Hitchin components, and which are conjecturally homeomorphic to them. For simple complex Lie algebras, this generalizes the higher complex structure. For real Lie algebras, this should give an alternative description of the Hitchin-Kostant-Rallis section.
We provide a detailed description of the model Hilbert space $L^2(\bbR; dΣ; \cK)$, were $\cK$ represents a complex, separable Hilbert space, and $Σ$ denotes a bounded operator-valued measure. In particular, we show that several alternative approaches to such a construction in the literature are equivalent. These spaces are of fundamental importance in the context of perturbation theory of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators, and the spectral theory of ordinary differential operators with operator-valued coefficients.
