We discuss the alternative algebraic structures on the manifold of quantum states arising from alternative Hermitian structures associated with quantum bi-Hamiltonian systems. We also consider the consequences at the level of the Heisenberg picture in terms of deformations of the associative product on the space of observables.
We show that complex Lie algebras (in particular sl(2,C)) provide us with an elegant method for studying the transition from real to complex eigenvalues of a class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians: complexified Scarf II, generalized Pöschl-Teller, and Morse. The characterizations of these Hamiltonians under the so-called pseudo-Hermiticity are also discussed.
We analyse a class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which can be expressed bilinearly in terms of generators of a sl(2,R)-Lie algebra or their isomorphic su(1,1)-counterparts. The Hamlitonians are prototypes for solvable models of Lie algebraic type. Demanding a real spectrum and the existence of a well defined metric, we systematically investigate the constraints these requirements impose on the coupling constants of the model and the parameters in the metric operator. We compute isospectral Hermitian counterparts for some of the original non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Alternatively we employ a gen…
We apply the notion of asymptotic iteration method (AIM) to determine eigenvalues of the bosonic Hamiltonians that include a wide class of quantum optical models. We consider solutions of the Hamiltonians, which are even polynomials of the fourth order with the respect to Boson operators. We also demonstrate applicability of the method for obtaining eigenvalues of the simple Lie algebraic structures. Eigenvalues of the multi-boson Hamiltonians have been obtained by transforming in the form of the single boson Hamiltonian in the framework of AIM.
In this article we study two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonians with non-commutativity both in coordinates and momenta from an algebraic perspective. In order to do so, we consider the graded Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$ generated by Hermitian bilinear forms in the non-commutative dynamical variables and the Dirac matrices in $2+1$ dimensions. By further defining a total angular momentum operator, we are able to express a class of Dirac Hamiltonians completely in terms of these operators. In this way, we analyze the energy spectrum of some simple models by constructing and studying the represe…
In complete analogy with the classical situation (which is briefly reviewed) it is possible to define bi-Hamiltonian descriptions for Quantum systems. We also analyze compatible Hermitian structures in full analogy with compatible Poisson structures.
We discuss the one-dimensional, general quadratic Hamiltonian and the bi-dimensional charged particle in time-dependent electromagnetic fields through the Lie algebraic approach. Such method consists in finding a set of generators that form a closed Lie algebra in terms of which it is possible to express the Hamiltonian and the therefore the evolution operator. The evolution operator is then the starting point to obtain the propagator as well as the explicit form of the Heisenberg picture position and momentum operators. First, the set of generators forming a closed Lie algebra is identified f…
We discuss the dynamical quantum systems which turn out to be bi-unitary with respect to the same alternative Hermitian structures in a infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We give a necessary and sufficient condition so that the Hermitian structures are in generic position. Finally the transformations of the bi-unitary group are explicitly obtained.
We study two-dimensional Hamiltonians in phase space with noncommutativity both in coordinates and momenta. We consider the generator of rotations on the noncommutative plane and the Lie algebra generated by Hermitian rotationally invariant quadratic forms of noncommutative dynamical variables. We show that two quantum phases are possible, characterized by the Lie algebras $sl(2,\mathbb{R})$ or $su(2)$ according to the relation between the noncommutativity parameters, with the rotation generator related with the Casimir operator. From this algebraic perspective, we analyze the spectrum of some…
We generalize a recently proposed algebraic method in order to treat non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. The approach is applied to several quadratic Hamiltonians studied earlier by other authors. Instead of solving the Schrödinger equation we simply obtain the eigenvalues of a suitable matrix representation of the operator. We take into account the existence of unitary and antiunitary symmetries in the quantum-mechanical problem.
We apply the algebraic method to the Bateman Hamiltonian and obtain its natural frequencies and ladder operators from the adjoint or regular matrix representation of that operator. Present analysis shows that the eigenfunctions compatible with the complex eigenvalues obtained earlier by other authors are not square integrable. In addition to this, the ladder operators annihilate an infinite number of such eigenfunctions.
We discuss transformations generated by dynamical quantum systems which are bi-unitary, i.e. unitary with respect to a pair of Hermitian structures on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We introduce the notion of Hermitian structures in generic relative position. We provide few necessary and sufficient conditions for two Hermitian structures to be in generic relative position to better illustrate the relevance of this notion. The group of bi-unitary transformations is considered in both the generic and non-generic case. Finally, we generalize the analysis to real Hilbert spaces and…
We present an exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonian to realize gapped boundaries of Kitaev's quantum double models for Dijkgraaf-Witten theories. We classify the elementary excitations on the boundary, and systematically describe the bulk-to-boundary condensation procedure. We also present the parallel algebraic/categorical structure of gapped boundaries.
Two non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian systems are reconsidered by means of the algebraic method which was originally proposed for the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems rather than for the PT-symmetric ones. Compared with the way converting a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to its Hermitian counterpart, this method has the merit that keeps the Hilbert space of the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian unchanged. In order to give the positive definite inner product for the PT-symmetric systems, a new operator V, instead of C, can be introduced. The operator V has the similar function to the o…
The symmetries play important roles in physical systems. We study the symmetries of a Hamiltonian system by investigating the asymmetry of the Hamiltonian with respect to certain algebras. We define the asymmetry of an operator with respect to an algebraic basis in terms of their commutators. Detailed analysis is given to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ and its $q$-deformation. The asymmetry of the $q$-deformed integrable spin chain models is calculated. The corresponding geometrical pictures with respect to such asymmetry is presented.
We study the Nonlinear (Polynomial, N-fold,...) Supersymmetry algebra in one-dimensional QM. Its structure is determined by the type of conjugation operation (Hermitian conjugation or transposition) and described with the help of the Super-Hamiltonian projection on the zero-mode subspace of a supercharge. We show that the SUSY algebra with transposition symmetry is always polynomial in the Hamiltonian if supercharges represent differential operators of finite order. The appearance of the extended SUSY with several (complex or real) supercharges is analyzed in details and it is established that…
The exact solvability and impressive pedagogical implementation of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators make it a problem of great physical relevance and the most fundamental one in quantum mechanics. So would be the position dependent mass oscillator for the position dependent mass quantum mechanics. We, hereby, construct the position dependent mass creation and annihilation operators for the position dependent mass oscillator via two different approaches. First, via von Roos position dependent mass Hamiltonian and show that the commutation relation between the position…
We argue here that, as it happens in Classical and Quantum Mechanics, where it has been proven that alternative Hamiltonian descriptions can be compatible with a given set of equations of motion, the same holds true in the realm of Statistical Mechanics, i.e. that alternative Hamiltonian descriptions do lead to the same thermodynamical description of any physical system.
In this letter we will use higher-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain several families of complex solutions of the Painleve IV equation with real parameters. We shall also study the algebraic structure, the eigenfunctions and the energy spectra of the corresponding non-hermitian Hamiltonians.
We develop an algebraic approach for finding the eigenfunctions of a large class of few and many-body Hamiltonians, in one and higher dimensions, having linear spectra. The method presented enables one to exactly map these interacting Hamiltonians to decoupled oscillators, thereby, giving a precise correspondence between the oscillator eigenspace and the wavefunctions of these quantum systems. The symmetries behind the degeneracy structure and the commuting constants of motion responsible for the quantum integrability of some of these models are made transparent. Apart from analysing a number …

The relation between certain Hamiltonians, known as dual, or partner Hamiltonians, under the transformation $x{\rightarrow}\bar{x}^{\barα}$ has long been used as a method of simplifying spectral problems in quantum mechanics. This paper seeks to examine this further by expressing such Hamiltonians in terms of the generators of SL(2) algebra, which provides another method of solving spectral problems. It appears that doing so greatly restricts the set of allowable potentials, with the only non-trivial potentials allowed being the Coulomb $\frac{1}{r}$ potential and the Harmonic Oscillator $r^2$…
This paper builds on our earlier proposal for construction of a positive inner product for pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians and we give several examples to clarify our method. We show through the example of the harmonic oscillator how our construction applies equally well to Hermitian Hamiltonians which form a subset of pseudo-Hermitian systems. For finite dimensional pseudo-Hermitian matrix Hamiltonians we construct the positive inner product (in the case of $2\times 2$ matrices for both real as well as complex eigenvalues). When the quantum mechanical system cannot be diagonalized exactly, our …
Unitary evolution under a time dependent Hamiltonian is a key component of simulation on quantum hardware. Synthesizing the corresponding quantum circuit is typically done by breaking the evolution into small time steps, also known as Trotterization, which leads to circuits whose depth scales with the number of steps. When the circuit elements are limited to a subset of SU(4) -- or equivalently, when the Hamiltonian may be mapped onto free fermionic models -- several identities exist that combine and simplify the circuit. Based on this, we present an algorithm that compresses the Trotter steps…
QuYBE is an open-source algebraic compiler for the compression of quantum circuits. It has been applied for the efficient simulation of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian on quantum computers. Currently, it can simulate the time dynamics of one-dimensional chains. It includes modules to generate the quantum circuits for the above as well as produce the compressed circuits, which are independent of the time step. It utilizes the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) to perform the compression. QuYBE enables users to seamlessly design, execute, and analyze the time dynamics of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian on quantum…
We propose a noncommutative version of the Euclidean Lie algebra $E_2$. Several types of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems expressed in terms of generic combinations of the generators of this algebra are investigated. Using the breakdown of the explicitly constructed Dyson maps as a criterium, we identify the domains in the parameter space in which the Hamiltonians have real energy spectra and determine the exceptional points signifying the crossover into the different types of spontaneously broken PT-symmetric regions with pairs of complex conjugate eigenvalues. We find exceptional points whi…
We numerically simulate the effects of noise-induced sampling of alternative Hamiltonian paths on the ability of quantum adiabatic search (QuAdS) to solve randomly generated instances of the NP-Complete problem N-bit Exact Cover 3. The noise-averaged median runtime is determined as the noise-power and number of bits N are varied, and power-law and exponential fits are made to the data. Noise is seen to slowdown QuAdS, though a downward shift in the scaling exponent is found for N > 12 over a range of noise-power values. We discuss whether this shift might be connected to arguments in the liter…
In the study of bi-Hamiltonian systems (both classical and quantum) one starts with a given dynamics and looks for all alternative Hamiltonian descriptions it admits. In this paper we start with two compatible Hermitian structures (the quantum analog of two compatible classical Poisson brackets) and look for all the dynamical systems which turn out to be bi-Hamiltonian with respect to them.
We investigate quantum metrology using a Lie algebraic approach for a class of Hamiltonians, including local and nearest-neighbor interaction Hamiltonians. Using this Lie algebraic formulation, we identify and construct highly symmetric states that admit Heisenberg scaling in precision in the absence of noise, and investigate their performance in the presence of noise. To this aim we perform a numerical scaling analysis, and derive upper bounds on the quantum Fisher information.
Quantum computing is a promising technology that harnesses the peculiarities of quantum mechanics to deliver computational speedups for some problems that are intractable to solve on a classical computer. Current generation noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers are severely limited in terms of chip size and error rates. Shallow quantum circuits with uncomplicated topologies are essential for successful applications in the NISQ era. Based on matrix analysis, we derive localized circuit transformations to efficiently compress quantum circuits for simulation of certain spin Hamiltonia…
We discuss some aspects and examples of applications of dual algebraic pairs $({\cal G}_1,{\cal G}_2)$ in quantum many-body physics. They arise in models whose Hamiltonians $H$ have invariance groups $G_i$. Then one can take ${\cal G}_1 = G_i$ whereas another dual partner ${\cal G}_2= g^D$ is generated by $G_i$ invariants, possesses a Lie-algebraic structure and describes dynamic symmetry of models; herewith polynomial Lie algebras $\hat g = g^D$ appear in models with essentially nonlinear Hamiltonians. Such an approach leads to a geometrization of model kinematics and dynamics.
We study the properties of quantum cusp and butterfly catastrophes from an algebraic viewpoint. The analysis employs an interacting boson model Hamiltonian describing quantum phase transitions between specific quadrupole shapes by interpolating between two incompatible dynamical symmetry limits. The classical properties are determined by using coherent states to construct the complete phase diagrams associated with Landau potentials exhibiting such catastrophes. The quantum properties are determined by analyzing the spectra, transition rates and symmetry character of the eigenstates of critical…
We consider quantum computational models defined via a Lie-algebraic theory. In these models, specified initial states are acted on by Lie-algebraic quantum gates and the expectation values of Lie algebra elements are measured at the end. We show that these models can be efficiently simulated on a classical computer in time polynomial in the dimension of the algebra, regardless of the dimension of the Hilbert space where the algebra acts. Similar results hold for the computation of the expectation value of operators implemented by a gate-sequence. We introduce a Lie-algebraic notion of general…
We consider solutions of the 2x2 matrix Hamiltonians of the physical systems within the context of the su(2) and su(1,1) Lie algebra. Our technique is relatively simple when compared with the others and treats those Hamiltonians which can be treated in a unified framework of the $% Sp(4,R)$ algebra. The systematic study presented here reproduces a number of earlier results in a natural way as well as leads to a novel findings. Possible generalizations of the method are also suggested.
The dynamical symmetry algebra of the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian with equal scalar and vector Smorodinsky-Winternitz potentials is constructed. It is the Higgs algebra, a cubic polynomial generalization of SU(2). With the help of the Casimir operators, the energy levels are derived algebraically.
