In complete analogy with the classical situation (which is briefly reviewed) it is possible to define bi-Hamiltonian descriptions for Quantum systems. We also analyze compatible Hermitian structures in full analogy with compatible Poisson structures.
We discuss the alternative algebraic structures on the manifold of quantum states arising from alternative Hermitian structures associated with quantum bi-Hamiltonian systems. We also consider the consequences at the level of the Heisenberg picture in terms of deformations of the associative product on the space of observables.
We discuss the dynamical quantum systems which turn out to be bi-unitary with respect to the same alternative Hermitian structures in a infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We give a necessary and sufficient condition so that the Hermitian structures are in generic position. Finally the transformations of the bi-unitary group are explicitly obtained.
Ostrogradsky's method allows one to construct Hamiltonian formulation for a higher derivative system. An application of this approach to the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator yields the Hamiltonian which is unbounded from below. This leads to the ghost problem in quantum theory. In order to avoid this nasty feature, the technique previously developed in [Acta Phys. Polon. B 36 (2005) 2115] is used to construct an alternative Hamiltonian formulation for the multidimensional Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator of arbitrary even order with distinct frequencies of oscillation. This construction is also generalized …
We discuss transformations generated by dynamical quantum systems which are bi-unitary, i.e. unitary with respect to a pair of Hermitian structures on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We introduce the notion of Hermitian structures in generic relative position. We provide few necessary and sufficient conditions for two Hermitian structures to be in generic relative position to better illustrate the relevance of this notion. The group of bi-unitary transformations is considered in both the generic and non-generic case. Finally, we generalize the analysis to real Hilbert spaces and…
Two non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian systems are reconsidered by means of the algebraic method which was originally proposed for the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems rather than for the PT-symmetric ones. Compared with the way converting a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to its Hermitian counterpart, this method has the merit that keeps the Hilbert space of the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian unchanged. In order to give the positive definite inner product for the PT-symmetric systems, a new operator V, instead of C, can be introduced. The operator V has the similar function to the o…
Analytic continuation of the classical dynamics generated by a standard Hamiltonian, H = p^2/2m + v(x), into the complex plane yields a particular complex classical dynamical system. For an analytic potential v, we show that the resulting complex system admits a description in terms of the phase space R^4 equipped with an unconventional symplectic structure. This in turn allows for the construction of an equivalent real description that is based on the conventional symplectic structure on R^4, and establishes the equivalence of the complex extension of classical mechanics that is based on the …
The exact solvability and impressive pedagogical implementation of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators make it a problem of great physical relevance and the most fundamental one in quantum mechanics. So would be the position dependent mass oscillator for the position dependent mass quantum mechanics. We, hereby, construct the position dependent mass creation and annihilation operators for the position dependent mass oscillator via two different approaches. First, via von Roos position dependent mass Hamiltonian and show that the commutation relation between the position…
We develop a complete Dirac's canonical analysis for an alternative action that yields Maxwell's four-dimensional equations of motion. We study in detail the full symmetries of the action by following all steps of Dirac's method in order to obtain a detailed description of symmetries. Our results indicate that such an action does not have the same symmetries than Maxwell theory, namely, the model is not a gauge theory and the number of physical degrees of freedom are different.
In the framework of 2D ideal Hydrodynamics a vortex system is defined as a smooth vorticity function having few positive local maxima and negative local minima separated by curves of zero vorticity. Invariants of such structures are discussed following from the vorticity conservation law and invertibility of Lagrangian motion. Hamiltonian formalism for vortex systems is developed by introducing new functional variables diagonalizing the original non-canonical Poisson bracket.
It is shown that if a non-autonomous system of $2n$ first-order ordinary differential equations is expressed in the form of the Hamilton equations in terms of two different sets of coordinates, $(q_{i}, p_{i})$ and $(Q_{i}, P_{i})$, then the determinant and the trace of any power of a certain matrix formed by the Poisson brackets of the $Q_{i}, P_{i}$ with respect to $q_{i}, p_{i}$, are constants of motion.
We study Hamiltonian analysis of three-dimensional advection flow $\mathbf{\dot{x}}=\mathbf{v}({\bf x})$ of incompressible nature $\nabla \cdot {\bf v} ={\bf 0}$ assuming that dynamics is generated by the curl of a vector potential $\mathbf{v} = \nabla \times \mathbf{A}$. More concretely, we elaborate Nambu-Hamiltonian and bi-Hamiltonian characters of such systems under the light of vanishing or non-vanishing of the quantity $\mathbf{A} \cdot \nabla \times \mathbf{A}$. We present an example (satisfying $\mathbf{A} \cdot \nabla \times \mathbf{A} \neq 0$) which can be written as in the form of N…
We consider a general approach to the theory of continuous media starting from Lagrangian formalism. This formalism which uses the trajectories if constituents of media is very convenient for taking into account different types of interaction between particles typical for different media. Building the Hamiltonian formalism we discuss some issues which is not very well known, such as relation of famous Thompson theorem with the symmetry with respect to volume preserving diffeomorphisms. We also discuss the relation between Euler and Lagrange description and present similar to Euler $C^2$ formul…
A covariant Hamiltonian description of Palatini's gravity on manifolds with boundary is presented. Palatini's gravity appears as a gauge theory satisfying a constraint in a certain topological limit. This approach allows the consideration of non-trivial topological situations. The multisymplectic framework for first-order covariant Hamiltonian field theories on manifolds with boundary, developed in [Ib15], enables analysis of the system at the boundary. The reduced phase space of the system is determined to be a symplectic manifold with a distinguished isotropic submanifold corresponding to th…
This paper studies distributed-parameter systems on Riemannian manifolds with respect to Stokes-Dirac structures in a language of contact geometry with fiber bundles. For the class where energy functionals are quadratic, it is shown that distributed-parameter port-Hamiltonian systems with respect to Stokes-Dirac structures on one, two, and three dimensional Riemannian manifolds are written in terms of contact Hamiltonian vector fields on bundles. Their fiber spaces are contact manifolds and base spaces are Riemannian manifolds. In addition, for a class of distributed-parameter port-Hamiltonian…
We offer a new Hamiltonian formulation of the classical Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator and consider its canonical quantization. We show that for the non-degenerate case where the frequencies differ, the quantum Hamiltonian operator is a Hermitian operator with a positive spectrum, i.e., the quantum system is both stable and unitary. A consistent description of the degenerate case based on a Hamiltonian that is quadratic in momenta requires its analytic continuation into a complex Hamiltonian system possessing a generalized PT-symmetry (an involutive antilinear symmetry). We devise a real descriptio…
Using the procedures in \cite{Bu} and \cite{GMS} and the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus we have developped in \cite{MP1,MPR1,IMP1,IMP2} we construct an effective Hamitonian that describes the spectrum in any compact subset of the real axis for a large class of periodic pseudodifferential Hamiltonians in a bounded smooth magnetic field, in a completely gauge covariant setting, without any restrictions on the vector potential and without any adiabaticity hypothesis.
We consider the geometric formulation of the Hamiltonian formalism for field theory in terms of {\em Hamiltonian connections} and {\em multisymplectic forms}. In this framework the covariant Hamilton equations for Mechanics and field theory are defined in terms of multisymplectic $(n+2)$--forms, where $n$ is the dimension of the basis manifold, together with connections on the configuration bundle. We provide a new geometric Hamiltonian description of field theory, based on the introduction of a suitable {\em composite fibered bundle} which plays the role of an {\em extended configuration bund…
Abstract interior-boundary conditions (IBC's) allow for the direct description of the domain and the action of Hamiltonians for a certain class of ultraviolet-divergent models in Quantum Field Theory. The method was recently applied to models where nonrelativistic scalar particles are linearly coupled to a quantised field, the best known of which is the Nelson model. Since this approach avoids the use of ultraviolet-cutoffs, there is no need for a renormalisation procedure. Here, we extend the IBC method to pseudorelativistic scalar particles that interact with a real bosonic field. We constru…
Finite-dimensional Quantum Mechanics can be geometrically formulated as a proper classical-like Hamiltonian theory in a projective Hilbert space. The description of composite quantum systems within the geometric Hamiltonian framework is discussed in this paper. As summarized in the first part of this work, in the Hamiltonian formulation the phase space of a quantum system is the Kahler manifold given by the complex projective space P(H) of the Hilbert space H of the considered quantum theory. However the phase space of a bipartite system must be given by the projective space of the tensor prod…
We study the Hamiltonian formulation for a parametrized scalar field in a regular bounded spatial region subject to Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. We generalize the work carried out by a number of authors on parametrized field systems to the interesting case where spatial boundaries are present. The configuration space of our models contains both smooth scalar fields defined on the spatial manifold and spacelike embeddings from the spatial manifold to a target spacetime endowed with a fixed Lorentzian background metric. We pay particular attention to the geometry of the infi…
The work is devoted to studying some new classical electrodynamics models of interacting charged point particles and the aspects of the quantization via the Dirac procedure related to them. Based on the vacuum field theory no-geometry approach developed in [6,7,9], the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian reformulations of some alternative classical electrodynamics models are devised. The Dirac-type quantization procedure for the considered alternative electrodynamics models, based on the obtained canonical Hamiltonian formulations, is developed.
Motivated by the notion of Lagrangian multiforms, which provide a Lagrangian formulation of integrability, and by results of the authors on the role of covariant Hamiltonian formalism for integrable field theories, we propose the notion of Hamiltonian multiforms for integrable $1+1$-dimensional field theories. They provide the Hamiltonian counterpart of Lagrangian multiforms and encapsulate in a single object an arbitrary number of flows within an integrable hierarchy. For a given hierarchy, taking a Lagrangian multiform as starting point, we provide a systematic construction of a Hamiltonian …
Rearrangement of rotation-vibration energy bands in isolated molecules within semi-quantum approach is characterized by delta-Chern invariants associated to a local semi-quantum Hamiltonian valid in a small neighborhood of a degeneracy point for the initial semi-quantum Hamiltonian and also valid in a small neighborhood of a critical point corresponding to the crossing of the boundary between iso-Chern domains in the control parameter space. For a full quantum model, a locally approximated Hamiltonian is assumed to take the form of a Dirac operator together with a specific boundary condition. …
At the exceptional point where two eigenstates coalesce in open quantum systems, the usual diagonalization scheme breaks down and the Hamiltonian can only be reduced to Jordan block form. Most of the studies on the exceptional point appearing in the literature introduce a phenomenological effective Hamiltonian that essentially reduces the problem to that of a finite non-Hermitian matrix for which it is straightforward to obtain the Jordan form. In this paper, we demonstrate how the Hamiltonian of an open quantum system reduces to Jordan block form at an exceptional point in an exact manner tha…
In recent years, new properties of space-time duality in the Hamiltonian formalism of certain integrable classical field theories have been discovered and have led to their reformulation using ideas from covariant Hamiltonian field theory: in this sense, the covariant nature of their classical $r$-matrix structure was unraveled. Here, we solve the open question of extending these results to a whole hierarchy. We choose the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy. To do so, we introduce for the first time a Lagrangian multiform for the entire AKNS hierarchy. We use it to construct explicitl…
In this paper an approach is proposed to represent a class of dissipative mechanical systems by corresponding infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. This approach is based upon the following structure: for any non-conservative classical mechanical system and arbitrary initial conditions, there exists a conservative system; both systems share one and only one common phase curve; and, the value of the Hamiltonian of the conservative system is, up to an additive constant, equal to the total energy of the non-conservative system on the aforementioned phase curve, the constant depending on the i…
We give an alternative presentation of braided monoidal categories. Instead of the usual associativity and braiding we have just one constraint (the b-structure). In the unital case, the coherence conditions for a b-structure are shown to be equivalent to the usual associativity, unit and braiding axioms. We also discuss the next dimensional version, that is, b-structures on bicategories. As an application, we show how special b-categories result in the Yang-Baxter equation, and how special b-bicategories produce Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equation. Finally, we define a cohomology theory (the…
The Rusk-Skinner formalism was developed in order to give a geometrical unified formalism for describing mechanical systems. It incorporates all the characteristics of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions of these systems (including dynamical equations and solutions, constraints, Legendre map, evolution operators, equivalence, etc.). In this work we extend this unified framework to first-order classical field theories, and show how this description comprises the main features of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms, both for the regular and singular cases. This formulation is a first s…
Wave turbulence formalism for long internal waves in a stratified fluid is developed, based on a natural Hamiltonian description. A kinetic equation appropriate for the description of spectral energy transfer is derived, and its self-similar stationary solution corresponding to a direct cascade of energy toward the short scales is found. This solution is very close to the high wavenumber limit of the Garrett-Munk spectrum of long internal waves in the ocean. In fact, a small modification of the Garrett-Munk formalism includes a spectrum consistent with the one predicted by wave turbulence.
