A covariant Hamiltonian description of Palatini's gravity on manifolds with boundary is presented. Palatini's gravity appears as a gauge theory satisfying a constraint in a certain topological limit. This approach allows the consideration of non-trivial topological situations. The multisymplectic framework for first-order covariant Hamiltonian field theories on manifolds with boundary, developed in [Ib15], enables analysis of the system at the boundary. The reduced phase space of the system is determined to be a symplectic manifold with a distinguished isotropic submanifold corresponding to the boundary data of the solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations.
By using the Hamilton-Jacobi [HJ] framework the three dimensional Palatini theory plus a Chern-Simons term [PCS] is analyzed. We report the complete set of $HJ$ Hamiltonians and a generalized $HJ$ differential from which all symmetries of the theory are identified. Moreover, we show that in spite of PCS Lagrangian produces Einstein's equations, the generalized $HJ$ brackets depend on a Barbero-Immirzi like parameter. In addition we complete our study by performing a canonical covariant analysis, and we construct a closed and gauge invariant two form that encodes the symplectic geometry of the …
A pure Dirac's framework for 3D Palatini's theory with cosmological constant is performed. By considering the complete phase space, we find out the full structure of the constraints, and their corresponding algebra is computed explicitly. We report that in order to obtain a well defined algebra among the constraints, the gauge group must be $SO(2,1)$. In addition, we obtain the extended action, the extended Hamiltonian, the fundamental gauge symmetry, and the Dirac brackets of the theory. Finally, we compare our results with those reported in the literature.
We present a covariant multisymplectic formulation for the Einstein-Palatini (or Metric-Affine) model of General Relativity (without energy-matter sources). As it is described by a first-order affine Lagrangian (in the derivatives of the fields), it is singular and, hence, this is a gauge field theory with constraints. These constraints are obtained after applying a constraint algorithm to the field equations, both in the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. In order to do this, the covariant field equations must be written in a suitable geometrical way, using integrable distributions wh…
Inspired by problems arising in the geometrical treatment of Yang-Mills theories and Palatini's gravity, the covariant formulation of Hamiltonian dynamical systems as a Hamiltonian field theory of dimension $1+0$ on a manifold with boundary is discussed. After a precise statement of Hamilton's variational principle in this context, the geometrical properties of the space of solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations of the theory are analyzed. A sufficient condition is obtained that guarantees that the set of solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations at the boundary of the manifold, fill a Lagr…
We prove the equivalence in the covariant phase space of the metric and connection formulations for Palatini gravity, with nonmetricity and torsion, on a spacetime manifold with boundary. To this end, we will rely on the cohomological approach provided by the relative bicomplex framework. Finally, we discuss some of the physical implications derived from this equivalence in the context of singularity identification through curvature invariants.
We study minimal and nonminimal couplings of fermions to the Palatini action in $n$ dimensions ($n\geq 3$) from the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian viewpoints. The Lagrangian action considered is not, in general, equivalent to the Einstein-Dirac action principle. However, by choosing properly the coupling parameters, it is possible to give a first-order action fully equivalent to the Einstein-Dirac theory in a spacetime of dimension four. By using a suitable parametrization of the vielbein and the connection, the Hamiltonian analysis of the general Lagrangian is given, which involves manifestly Lor…
\noindent Let $M\to N$ (resp.\ $C\to N$) be the fibre bundle of pseudo-Riemannian metrics of a given signature (resp.\ the bundle of linear connections) on an orientable connected manifold $N$. A geometrically defined class of first-order Ehresmann connections on the product fibre bundle $M\times_NC$ is determined such that, for every connection $γ$ belonging to this class and every $\mathrm{Diff}N$-invariant Lagrangian density $Λ$ on $J^1(M\times_NC)$, the corresponding covariant Hamiltonian $Λ^γ$ is also $\mathrm{Diff}N$-invariant. The case of $\mathrm{Diff}N$-invariant second-order Lagrangi…
We give a detailed account of the cyclic $L_\infty$-algebra formulation of general relativity with cosmological constant in the Einstein-Cartan-Palatini formalism on spacetimes of arbitrary dimension and signature, which encompasses all symmetries, field equations and Noether identities of gravity without matter fields. We present a local formulation as well as a global covariant framework, and an explicit isomorphism between the two $L_\infty$-algebras in the case of parallelizable spacetimes. By duality, we show that our $L_\infty$-algebras describe the complete BV-BRST formulation of Einste…
In the framework of polysymplectic Hamiltonian formalism, degenerate Lagrangian field systems are described as multi-Hamiltonian systems with Lagrangian constraints. The physically relevant case of degenerate quadratic Lagrangians is analized in detail, and the Koszul--Tate resolution of Lagrangian constraints is constructed in an explicit form. The particular case of Hamiltonian mechanics with time-dependent constraints is studied.
We study the relationship between the equations of first order Lagrangian field theory on fiber bundles and the covariant Hamilton equations on the finite-dimensional polysymplectic phase space of covariant Hamiltonian field theory. The main peculiarity of these Hamilton equations lies in the fact that, for degenerate systems, they contain additional gauge fixing conditions. We develop the BRST extension of the covariant Hamiltonian formalism, characterized by a Lie superalgebra of BRST and anti-BRST symmetries.
The Hamiltonian counterpart of classical Lagrangian field theory is covariant Hamiltonian field theory where momenta correspond to derivatives of fields with respect to all world coordinates. In particular, classical Lagrangian and covariant Hamiltonian field theories are equivalent in the case of a hyperregular Lagrangian, and they are quasi-equivalent if a Lagrangian is almost-regular. In order to quantize covariant Hamiltonian field theory, one usually attempts to construct and quantize a multisymplectic generalization of the Poisson bracket. In the present work, the path integral quantizat…
The first part of the series formulates the Einstein-Cartan theory in the covariant hamiltonian framework. The first section revises the general multisymplectic approach and introduces the notion of the d-jet bundles. Since the whole Standard Model Lagrangian (including gravity) can be written as the functional of the forms, the structure of the d-jet bundles is more appropriate for the covariant hamiltonian analysis than the standard jet bundle approach. The definition of the local covariant Poisson bracket on the space of covariant observables is recalled. The main goal of the work is to sho…
We rederive the results of our companion paper, for matching spacetime and internal signature, by applying in detail the Dirac algorithm to the Palatini action. While the constraint set of the Palatini action contains second class constraints, by an appeal to the method of gauge unfixing, we map the second class system to an equivalent first class system which turns out to be identical to the first class constraint system obtained via the extension of the ADM phase space performed in our companion paper. Central to our analysis is again the appropriate treatment of the simplicity constraint. R…
A consistent, local coordinate formulation of covariant Hamiltonian field theory is presented. Whereas the covariant canonical field equations are equivalent to the Euler-Lagrange field equations, the covariant canonical transformation theory offers more general means for defining mappings that preserve the form of the field equations than the usual Lagrangian description. It is proved that Poisson brackets, Lagrange brackets, and canonical 2-forms exist that are invariant under canonical transformations of the fields. The technique to derive transformation rules for the fields from generating…
A novel reduction procedure for covariant classical field theories, reflecting the generalized symplectic reduction theory of Hamiltonian systems, is presented. The departure point of this reduction procedure consists in the choice of a submanifold of the manifold of solutions of the equations describing a field theory. Then, the covariance of the geometrical objects involved, will allow to define equations of motion on a reduced space. The computation of the canonical geometrical structure is performed neatly by using the geometrical framework provided by the multisymplectic description of co…
We consider the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian formulation of the Palatini action of vielbein gravity formulated in terms of the solder form and spin connection, which are treated as independent variables. The basic geometrical constructions necessary for the DW Hamiltonian theory of vielbein gravity are presented. We reproduce the DW Hamilton equations in the multisymplectic and pre-multisymplectic formulations. We also give basic examples of Hamiltonian (n-1)-forms and related Poisson brackets.
The Lorentz-covariant quantization performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism for massless non-Abelian gauge fields has been achieved. In this quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a constraint, must be introduced initially and incorporated into the Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange undetermined multiplier method. In this way, it is found that all Lorentz components of a vector potential have thier corresponding conjugate canonical variables. This fact allows us to define Lorentz-invariant poisson brackets and carry out the quantization in a Lorent-covariant manner. Key words: …
The massive non-Abelian gauge fields are quantized Lorentz-covariantly in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism. In the quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a necessary constraint, is introduced initially and incorporated into the massive Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange multiplier method so as to make each temporal component of a vector potential to have a canonically conjugate counterpart. The result of this quantization is confirmed by the quantization performed in the Lagrangian path-integral formalism by applying the Lagrange multiplier method which is shown to be equivalent to …
Using the procedures in \cite{Bu} and \cite{GMS} and the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus we have developped in \cite{MP1,MPR1,IMP1,IMP2} we construct an effective Hamitonian that describes the spectrum in any compact subset of the real axis for a large class of periodic pseudodifferential Hamiltonians in a bounded smooth magnetic field, in a completely gauge covariant setting, without any restrictions on the vector potential and without any adiabaticity hypothesis.
We show that the De Donder-Weyl (DW) covariant Hamiltonian field equations of any field can be written in Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) matrix form. As a consequence, the (modified) DKP beta-matrices (5 X 5 in four space-time dimensions) are of universal significance for all fields admitting the DW Hamiltonian formulation, not only for a scalar field, and can be viewed as field theoretic analogues of the symplectic matrix, leading to the so-called ``k-symplectic'' (k=4) structure. We also briefly discuss what could be viewed as the covariant Poisson bracket given by beta-matrices and the correspo…
The utility of the U(1)$^3$ model as a test laboratory for quantum gravity has recently been emphasized in a recent series of papers due to Varadarajan et al. The simplification from SU(2) to U(1)$^3$ can be performed simply by hand within the Hamiltonian formulation by dropping all non-Abelian terms from the Gauss, spatial diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints respectively. However, one may ask from which Lagrangian formulation this theory descends. For the SU(2) theory it is known that one can choose the Palatini action, Holst action or (anti-)selfdual action (Euclidian signature) as st…
The main purpose in the present paper is to build a Hamiltonian theory for fields which is consistent with the principles of relativity. For this we consider detailed geometric pictures of Lepage theories in the spirit of Dedecker and try to stress out the interplay between the Lepage-Dedecker (LP) description and the (more usual) de Donder-Weyl (dDW) one. One of the main points is the fact that the Legendre transform in the dDW approach is replaced by a Legendre correspondence in the LP theory (This correspondence behaves differently: ignoring the singularities whenever the Lagrangian is dege…
The sO(3) and the Lorentz algebra symmetries breaking with gauge curvatures are studied by means of a covariant Hamiltonian. The restoration of these algebra symmetries in flat and curved spaces is performed and led to the apparition of a monopole field. Then in the context of the Lorentz algebra we consider an application to the gravitoelectromagnetism theory. In this last case a qualitative relation giving a mass spectrum for dyons is established.
We analyse the behaviour of the MacDowell-Mansouri action with internal symmetry group $\mathrm{SO}(4,1)$ under the covariant Hamiltonian formulation. The field equations, known in this formalism as the De Donder-Weyl equations, are obtained by means of the graded Poisson-Gerstenhaber bracket structure present within the covariant formulation. The decomposition of the internal algebra $\mathfrak{so}(4,1)\simeq\mathfrak{so}(3,1)\oplus\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ allows the symmetry breaking $\mathrm{SO}(4,1)\to\mathrm{SO}(3,1)$, which reduces the original action to the Palatini action without the topologi…
This paper presents a "historical" formalism for dynamical systems, in its Hamiltonian version (Lagrangian version was presented in a previous paper). It is universal, in the sense that it applies equally well to time dynamics and to field theories on space-time. It is based on the notion of (Hamiltonian) histories, which are sections of the (extended) phase space bundle. It is developed in the space of sections, in contradistinction with the usual formalism which works in the bundle manifold. In field theories, the formalism remains covariant and does not require a spitting of space-time. It …
We study spacetime diffeomorphisms in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalisms of generally covariant systems. We show that the gauge group for such a system is characterized by having generators which are projectable under the Legendre map. The gauge group is found to be much larger than the original group of spacetime diffeomorphisms, since its generators must depend on the lapse function and shift vector of the spacetime metric in a given coordinate patch. Our results are generalizations of earlier results by Salisbury and Sundermeyer. They arise in a natural way from using the requirement of …
A covariant algorithm for deriving the conserved quantities for natural Hamiltonian systems is combined with the non-relativistic framework of Eisenhart, and of Duval, in which the classical trajectories arise as geodesics in a higher dimensional space-time, realized by Brinkmann manifolds. Conserved quantities which are polynomial in the momenta can be built using time-dependent conformal Killing tensors with flux. The latter are associated with terms proportional to the Hamiltonian in the lower dimensional theory and with spectrum generating algebras for higher dimensional quantities of orde…
This papers is concerned with multisymplectic formalisms which are the frameworks for Hamiltonian theories for fields theory. Our main purpose is to study the observable $(n-1)$-forms which allows one to construct observable functionals on the set of solutions of the Hamilton equations by integration. We develop here two different points of view: generalizing the law $\{p,q\} = 1$ or the law $dF/dt = \{H,F\}$. This leads to two possible definitions; we explore the relationships and the differences between these two concepts. We show that -- in contrast with the de Donder--Weyl theory -- the tw…
We bring together aspects of covariant Hamiltonian field theory and of classical integrable field theories in $1+1$ dimensions. Specifically, our main result is to obtain for the first time the classical $r$-matrix structure within a covariant Poisson bracket for the Lax connection, or Lax one form. This exhibits a certain covariant nature of the classical $r$-matrix with respect to the underlying spacetime variables. The main result is established by means of several prototypical examples of integrable field theories, all equipped with a Zakharov-Shabat type Lax pair. Full details are present…
It is the goal of this paper to present the first steps for defining the analogue of Hamiltonian Floer theory for covariant field theory, treating time and space relativistically. While there already exist a number of competing geometric frameworks for covariant field theory generalizing symplectic geometry, none of them are readily suitable for variational techniques such as Hamiltonian Floer theory, since the corresponding action functionals are too degenerate. Instead, we show how a regularization procedure introduced by Bridges leads to a new geometric framework for which we can show that …
The main purpose in the present paper is to build a Hamiltonian theory for fields which is consistent with the principles of relativity. For this we consider detailed geometric pictures of Lepage theories in the spirit of Dedecker and try to stress out the interplay between the Lepage-Dedecker (LP) description and the (more usual) de Donder-Weyl (dDW) one. For instance the Legendre transform in the dDW approach is replaced by a Legendre correspondence in the LP theory, while ignoring singularities whenever the Lagrangian is degenerate. Moreover we show that there exist two different definition…
We provide geometric quantization of the vertical cotangent bundle V^*Q equipped with the canonical Poisson structure. This is a momentum phase space of non-relativistic mechanics with the configuration bundle Q -> R. The goal is the Schrodinger representation of V^*Q. We show that this quantization is equivalent to the fibrewise quantization of symplectic fibres of V^*Q -> R, that makes the quantum algebra of non-relativistic mechanics an instantwise algebra. Quantization of the classical evolution equation defines a connection on this instantwise algebra, which provides quantum evolution in …
We perform the Lorentz-covariant Hamiltonian analysis of two Lagrangian action principles that describe general relativity as a constrained BF theory and that include the Immirzi parameter. The relation between these two Lagrangian actions has been already studied through a map among the fields involved. The main difference between these is the way the Immirzi parameter is included, since in one of them the Immirzi parameter is included explicitly in the BF terms, whereas in the other (the CMPR action) it is in the constraint on the B fields. In this work we continue the analysis of their rela…
We review the covariant canonical formalism initiated by D'Adda, Nelson and Regge in 1985, and extend it to include a definition of form-Poisson brackets (FPB) for geometric theories coupled to $p$-forms, gauging free differential algebras. The form-Legendre transformation and the form-Hamilton equations are derived from a $d$-form Lagrangian with $p$-form dynamical fields $ϕ$. Momenta are defined as derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to the "velocities" $dϕ$ and no preferred time direction is used. Action invariance under infinitesimal form-canonical transformations can be studied in …
Motivated by the notion of Lagrangian multiforms, which provide a Lagrangian formulation of integrability, and by results of the authors on the role of covariant Hamiltonian formalism for integrable field theories, we propose the notion of Hamiltonian multiforms for integrable $1+1$-dimensional field theories. They provide the Hamiltonian counterpart of Lagrangian multiforms and encapsulate in a single object an arbitrary number of flows within an integrable hierarchy. For a given hierarchy, taking a Lagrangian multiform as starting point, we provide a systematic construction of a Hamiltonian …
We study a general class of models whose classical Hamiltonians are given by H = U(x) p + V(x)/p, where x and p are the position and momentum of a particle moving in one dimension, and U and V are positive functions. This class includes the Hamiltonians H_I =x (p+1/p) and H_II=(x+ 1/x)(p+ 1/p), which have been recently discussed in connection with the non trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We show that all these models are covariant under general coordinate transformations. This remarkable property becomes explicit in the Lagrangian formulation which describes a relativistic particle …
