The utility of the U(1)$^3$ model as a test laboratory for quantum gravity has recently been emphasized in a recent series of papers due to Varadarajan et al. The simplification from SU(2) to U(1)$^3$ can be performed simply by hand within the Hamiltonian formulation by dropping all non-Abelian terms from the Gauss, spatial diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints respectively. However, one may ask from which Lagrangian formulation this theory descends. For the SU(2) theory it is known that one can choose the Palatini action, Holst action or (anti-)selfdual action (Euclidian signature) as starting point all leading to equivalent Hamiltonian formulations. In this paper we systematically analyse this question directly for the U(1)$^3$ theory. Surprisingly, it turns out that the Abelian analog of the Palatini or Holst formulation is a consistent but topological theory without propagating degrees of freedom. On the other hand, a twisted Abelian analog of the (anti-)selfdual formulation does lead to the desired Hamiltonian formulation. A new aspect of our derivation is that we work with 1. half-density valued tetrads which simplifies the analysis, 2. without the simplicity constraint (which admits one undesired solution that is usually neglected by hand) and 3. without imposing the time gauge from the beginning. As a byproduct we show that also the non-Abelian theory admits a twisted (anti-)selfdual formulation. Finally we also derive a pure connection formulation of Euclidian GR including a cosmological constant by extending previous work due to Capovilla, Dell, Jacobson and Peldan which may be an interesting starting point for path integral investigations and displays (Euclidian) GR as a Yang-Mills theory with non-polynomial Lagrangian.
It is often emphasized that spin-foam models could realize a projection on the physical Hilbert space of canonical Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). As a first test we analyze the one-vertex expansion of a simple Euclidean spin-foam. We find that for fixed Barbero-Immirzi parameter γ=1 the one vertex-amplitude in the KKL prescription annihilates the Euclidean Hamiltonian constraint of LQG. Since for γ=1 the Lorentzian part of the Hamiltonian constraint does not contribute this gives rise to new solutions of the Euclidean theory. Furthermore, we find that the new states only depend on the diagonal ma…
We study causal diamonds in Minkowski, Schwarzschild, (anti) de Sitter, and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes using Euclidean methods. The null boundaries of causal diamonds are shown to map to isolated punctures in the Euclidean continuation of the parent manifold. Boundary terms around these punctures decrease the Euclidean action by $A_\diamond/4$, where $A_\diamond$ is the area of the holographic screen around the diamond. We identify these boundary contributions with the maximal entropy of gravitational degrees of freedom associated with the diamond.
The discrepancy between the results of covariant and non-covariant one-loop calculations for higher-spin fields in quantum cosmology is analyzed. A detailed mode-by-mode study of perturbative quantum gravity about a flat Euclidean background bounded by two concentric 3-spheres, including non-physical degrees of freedom and ghost modes, leads to one-loop amplitudes in agreement with the covariant Schwinger-DeWitt method. This calculation provides the generalization of a previous analysis of fermionic fields and electromagnetic fields at one-loop about flat Euclidean backgrounds admitting a well…
For Euclidean quantum field theories, Holland and Hollands have shown operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients satisfy "flow equations": For interaction parameter $λ$, the partial derivative of any OPE coefficient with respect to $λ$ is given by an integral over Euclidean space of a sum of products of other OPE coefficients. In this paper, we generalize these results for flat Euclidean space to curved Lorentzian spacetimes in the context of the solvable "toy model" of massive Klein-Gordon scalar field theory, with $m^2$ viewed as the "self-interaction parameter". Even in Minkowski spaceti…
We give an SU(2) covariant representation of the constraints of Euclidean general relativity in the Ashtekar variables. The guiding principle is the use of triads to transform all free spatial indices into SU(2) indices. A central role is played by a special covariant derivative. The Gauss, diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints become purely algebraic restrictions on the curvature and the torsion associated with this connection. We introduce coordinates on the jet space of the dynamical fields which cleanly separate the constraint and gauge directions from the true physical directions. Th…
A generally covariant $U(1)^3$ gauge theory describing the $G_N \to 0$ limit of Euclidean general relativity is an interesting test laboratory for general relativity, specially because the algebra of the Hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints of this limit is isomorphic to the algebra of the corresponding constraints in general relativity. In the present work, we study boundary conditions and asymptotic symmetries of the $U(1)^3$ model and show that while asymptotic spacetime translations admit well-defined generators, boosts and rotations do not. Comparing with Euclidean general relativit…
Classical gravitational evolution admits an elegant and compact re-expression in terms of gauge covariant generalizations of Lie derivatives with respect to a spatial phase space dependent $su(2)$ valued vector field called the Electric Shift [1]. A quantum dynamics for Euclidean Loop Quantum Gravity which ascribes a central role to the Electric Shift operator is derived in [2]. $Here\; we\; show\; that\; this \;quantum\; dynamics\; is\; nontrivially\; anomaly$ $free$. Specifically, we show that on a suitable space of off shell states (a) the (non-vanishing) commutator between a pair of Hamilt…
We study the euclidean covariant loop-quantum-gravity vertex numerically, using a cylindrically symmetric boundary state and a convenient value of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter. We show that a classical geometry emerges already at low spin. We also recognise the appearance of the degenerate configurations.
A geometrical interpretation of Schrödinger's kinetic and potential energy operators is proposed, allowing for a covariant momentum space formulation of the dynamics that is relevant for the theories with the deformation of the momentum space structure. Some specific examples are discussed in the context of flat space deformations and the Euclidean Snyder (spherical momentum space) model. In this formulation the dynamics for the deformations of the flat momentum space becomes trivial, while different versions of the Snyder model turn out to be dynamically equivalent.
In three spacetime dimensions, we propose a generally covariant Lorentzian action of the classicalized holographic tensor network (cHTN) as the holographic reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert action of gravity in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. In this article, first, we investigate the properties of this Lorentzian action in the ground state. Next, based on the Euclidean action of the cHTN, we derive the gravity perturbation induced by a massive particle at rest in the cHTN as the Unruh effect. Finally, we view our holographic formulation of spacetime as a non-equilibrium seco…
We discuss the generic geometric properties of metrics $\widehat {g}_{ab}$ constructed from Lorentzian metric $g_{ab}$ and a nowhere vanishing, hypersurface orthogonal, timelike vector field $u^a$. The metric ${\widehat g}_{ab}$ has Euclidean signature in a certain domain, with the transition to Lorentzian signature occurring at some hypersurface $Σ$ orthogonal to $u^a$. Geometry associated with ${\widehat g}_{ab}$ has recently been shown to yield remarkable new insights for classical and quantum gravity. In this work, we prove several general results applicable in physically relevant spacetim…
We propose a set of boundary terms for higher spin theories in AdS$_3$ that lead to a well-defined variational principle compatible with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the metric and higher spin fields. These boundary terms are valid for higher spin theories in the Fefferman-Graham gauge and they allow us to compute the canonical free energy of higher spin black holes directly from the Euclidean, covariant, on-shell action. Using these results we reproduce the thermodynamics of the higher spin black hole of Ammon, Gutperle, Kraus, and Perlmutter and comment on the corresponding theory of in…
Causal diamond-shaped subsets of space-time are naturally associated with operator algebras in quantum field theory, and they are also related to the Bousso covariant entropy bound. In this work we argue that the net of these causal sets to which are assigned the local operator algebras of quantum theories should be taken to be non orthomodular if there is some lowest scale for the description of space-time as a manifold. This geometry can be related to a reduction in the degrees of freedom of the holographic type under certain natural conditions for the local algebras. A non orthomodular net …
Zeta-function regularization is applied to complete a recent analysis of the quantized electromagnetic field in the presence of boundaries. The quantum theory is studied by setting to zero on the boundary the magnetic field, the gauge-averaging functional and hence the Faddeev-Popov ghost field. Electric boundary conditions are also studied. On considering two gauge functionals which involve covariant derivatives of the 4-vector potential, a series of detailed calculations shows that, in the case of flat Euclidean 4-space bounded by two concentric 3-spheres, one-loop quantum amplitudes are gau…
The pseudo-Euclidean Toda-like system of cosmological origin is considered. When certain restrictions on the parameters of the model are imposed, the dynamics of the model near the ``singularity'' is reduced to a billiard on the (n-1)-dimensional Lobachevsky space H^{n-1}. The geometrical criterion for the finiteness of the billiard volume and its compactness is suggested. This criterion reduces the problem to the problem of illumination of (n-2)-dimensional sphere S^{n-2} by point-like sources. Some examples are considered.
Smolin's generally covariant $G_{\mathrm{Newton}}\rightarrow0$ limit of 4d Euclidean gravity is a useful toy model for the study of the constraint algebra in Loop Quantum Gravity. In particular, the commutator between its Hamiltonian constraints has a metric dependent structure function. While a prior LQG like construction of non-trivial anomaly free constraint commutators for the model exists, that work suffers from two defects. First, Smolin's remarks on the inability of the quantum dynamics to generate propagation effects apply. Second, the construction only yields the action of a single Ha…
The graphical calculus method is generalized to study the relation between covariant and canonical dynamics of loop quantum gravity. On one hand, a graphical derivation of the partition function of the generalized Euclidean Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine (EPRL) spin-foam model is presented. On the other hand, the action of a Euclidean Hamiltonian constraint operator on certain spin network states is calculated by graphical method. It turns out that the EPRL model can provide a rigging map such that the Hamiltonian constraint operator is weakly satisfied on certain physical states for the Immirzi…
We construct the covariant or model independent induced Einstein-Yang-Mills field equations on a 4-dimensional brane embedded isometrically in an D-dimensional bulk space, assuming the matter fields are confined to the brane. Applying this formalism to cosmology, we derive the generalized Friedmann equations. We derive the density parameter of dark energy in terms of width of the brane, normal curvature radii and the number of extra large dimensions. We show that dark energy could actually be the manifestation of the local extrinsic shape of the brane. It is shown that the predictions of this …
We present a covariant euclidean wormhole solution to Einstein Yang-Mills system and study scalar perturbations analytically. The fluctuation operator has a positive definite spectrum. We compute the Euclidean Green's function, which displays maximal antipodal correlation on the smallest three sphere. Upon analytic continuation, it corresponds to the Feynman propagator on a compact bang-crunch universe. We present the connection matrix that relates past and future modes. We thoroughly discuss the physical implications of the antipodal map in both the Euclidean and Lorentzian geometries.
Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) is a non-perturbative attempt at quantization of a classical phase space description of gravity in terms of $SU(2)$ connections and electric fields. As emphasized recently [1], on this phase space, classical gravitational evolution in $time$ can be understood in terms of certain gauge covariant generalizations of Lie derivatives with respect to a $spatial$ $SU(2)$ Lie algebra valued vector field called the Electric Shift. We present a derivation of a quantum dynamics for Euclidean LQG which is informed by this understanding. In addition to the physically motivated na…
This paper studies the linearized gravitational field in the presence of boundaries. For this purpose, $ζ$-function regularization is used to perform the mode-by-mode evaluation of BRST-invariant Faddeev-Popov amplitudes in the case of flat Euclidean four-space bounded by a three-sphere. On choosing the de Donder gauge-averaging term, the resulting $ζ(0)$ value is found to agree with the space-time covariant calculation of the same amplitudes, which relies on the recently corrected geometric formulas for the asymptotic heat kernel in the case of mixed boundary conditions. Two sets of mixed bou…
The G-->0 limit of Euclidean gravity introduced by Smolin is described by a generally covariant U(1)xU(1)xU(1) gauge theory. In an earlier paper, Tomlin and Varadarajan constructed the quantum Hamiltonian constraint of density weight 4/3 for this U(1)xU(1)xU(1) theory so as to produce a non-trivial anomaly free LQG-type representation of the Poisson bracket between a pair of Hamiltonian constraints. These constructions involved a choice of regulating coordinate patches. The use of these coordinate patches is in apparent conflict with spatial diffeomorphism covariance. In this work we show how …
We argue that there is nothing puzzling in the fact that the Hamiltonian formulation of a covariant theory, General Relativity, after a non-covariant change of field variables is not canonically related to the formulation based on the original variable, the metric tensor. Were such a puzzle to be "solved" it would lead to the conclusion that a covariant theory can be converted into a non-covariant one in many different ways and without consequence. The non-canonicity of transformations from covariant to non-covariant variables shows the need to work in the original variables so as to be able t…
Space-time quantum contributions to the classical Einstein equations of General Relativity are determined. The theoretical background is provided by the non-perturbative theory of manifestly-covariant quantum gravity and the trajectory-based representation of the related quantum wave equation in terms of the Generalized Lagrangian path formalism. To reach the target an extended functional setting is introduced, permitting the treatment of a non-stationary background metric tensor allowed to depend on both space-time coordinates and a suitably-defined invariant proper-time parameter. Based on t…
It is shown that nearly-flat 3+1D spacetime emerging from a dual quantum field theory in 2+1D displays quantum fluctuations from classical Euclidean geometry on macroscopic scales. A covariant holographic mapping is assumed, where plane wave states with wavevector k on a 2D surface map onto classical null trajectories in the emergent third dimension at an angle θ=l_P k relative to the surface element normal, where l_P denotes the Planck length. Null trajectories in the 3+1D world then display quantum uncertainty of angular orientation, with standard deviation Δθ=\sqrt{l_P/z} for longitudinal p…
The covariant phase space method of Iyer, Lee, Wald, and Zoupas gives an elegant way to understand the Hamiltonian dynamics of Lagrangian field theories without breaking covariance. The original literature however does not systematically treat total derivatives and boundary terms, which has led to some confusion about how exactly to apply the formalism in the presence of boundaries. In particular the original construction of the canonical Hamiltonian relies on the assumed existence of a certain boundary quantity "$B$", whose physical interpretation has not been clear. We here give an algorithm…
We show that 't Hooft's representation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity in terms of flat polygonal tiles is closely related to a gauge-fixed version of the covariant Hamiltonian lattice theory. 't Hooft's gauge is remarkable in that it leads to a Hamiltonian which is a linear sum of vertex Hamiltonians, each of which is defined modulo $2 π$. A cyclic Hamiltonian implies that ``time'' is quantized. However, it turns out that this Hamiltonian is {\it constrained}. If one chooses an internal time and solves this constraint for the ``physical Hamiltonian'', the result is not a cyclic function. Even if…
We carry out the canonical analysis of a covariant version of unimodular gravity in terms of the connection representation. We then proceed to quantize this theory by implementing the Dirac procedure. We confirm whether and how the Kodama state, which is a solution of quantum general relativity, can be extended into covariant unimodular gravity. Finally, we discuss the difference of quantum states between covariant unimodular gravity, the original unimodular gravity, and general relativity.
The cosmological constant problem is usually considered an inevitable feature of any effective theory capturing well-tested gravitational and matter physics, without regard to the details of short-distance gravitational couplings. In this paper, a subtle effective description avoiding the problem is presented in a first quantized language, consistent with experiments and the Equivalence Principle. First quantization allows a minimal domain of validity to be carved out by cutting on the proper length of particle worldlines. This is facilitated by working in (locally) Euclidean spacetime, althou…
We review some recent attempts to extract information about the nature of quantum gravity, with and without matter, by quantum field theoretical methods. More specifically, we work within a covariant lattice approach where the individual space-time geometries are constructed from fundamental simplicial building blocks, and the path integral over geometries is approximated by summing over a class of piece-wise linear geometries. This method of ``dynamical triangulations'' is very powerful in 2d, where the regularized theory can be solved explicitly, and gives us more insights into the quantum n…
A review of computations of free energy for Gibbs states on stationary but not static gravitational and gauge backgrounds is given. On these backgrounds wave equations for free fields are reduced to eigen-value problems which depend non-linearly on the spectral parameter. We present a method to deal with such problems. In particular, we demonstrate how some results of the spectral theory of second order elliptic operators, such as heat kernel asymptotics, can be extended to a class of non-linear spectral problems. The method is used to trace down the relation between the canonical definition o…
We discuss the status of the black hole entropy formula $S_{\rm BH} = A_H /4G$ in low energy effective field theory. The low energy expansion of the black hole entropy is studied in a non-equilibrium situation: the semiclassical decay of hot flat space by black hole nucleation. In this context the entropy can be defined as an enhancement factor in the semiclassical decay rate, which is dominated by a sphaleron-like saddle point. We find that all perturbative divergences appearing in Euclidean calculations of the entropy can be renormalized in low energy couplings. We also discuss some formal a…
The well-known discrepancies between covariant and non-covariant formalisms in quantum field theory and quantum cosmology are analyzed by focusing on the Coulomb gauge for vacuum Maxwell theory. On studying a flat Euclidean background with boundaries, the corresponding mode-by-mode analysis of one-loop quantum amplitudes agrees with the results of the Schwinger-DeWitt technique and of mode-by-mode calculations in relativistic gauges.
The main results are: 1. A manifestly covariant technique for the calculation of De Witt coefficients is elaborated; 2. The coefficients $a_3$ and $a_4$ are calculated; 3. Covariant methods for the study of the nonlocal structure of the effective action are developed. The terms of first and second order in background fields in De Witt coefficients are calculated. The summation of these terms is carried out and nonlocal covariant expression for the Green function, the heat kernel and the effective action are obtained. It is shown that in the conform-invariant case the Green function is finite. …
In this paper, we generalize the simplified Dark Matter models with graviton mediator to the curved space-time, in particular to the de Sitter space. We obtain the generating functional of the Green's functions in the Euclidean de Sitter space for the covariant free gravitons. We determine the generating functional of the interacting theory between Dark Matter particles and the covariant gravitons. Also, we calculate explicitly the 2-point and 3-point interacting Green's functions for the symmetric traceless divergence-less covariant graviton. The results derived here are general in the sense …
We study the recently proposed Covariant Renormalizable Gravity (CRG), which aims to provide a generally covariant ultraviolet completion of general relativity. We obtain a space-time decomposed form --- an Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) representation --- of the CRG action. The action is found to contain time derivatives of the gravitational fields up to fourth order. Some ways to reduce the order of these time derivatives are considered. The resulting action is analyzed using the Hamiltonian formalism, which was originally adapted for constrained theories by Dirac. It is shown that the theory h…
We make a perturbative analysis of spatially covariant gravity only respecting spatial symmetries, of which the Lagrangian includes the dynamic lapse function and the coupling term of spatial curvature and extrinsic curvature. We show that the theory propagates 2 scalar degrees of freedom, as long as the kinetic terms are degenerate, it propagates a single scalar mode at the linear order. Then we calculate the scalar and tensor power spectra. Finally, we study cosmological perturbations in mimetic gravity in the presence of spatially covariant gravity. The original spatially covariant theory p…
We first briefly revisit the original Hamilton-Jacobi method and show that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the action $I$ of tunnelings of a fermionic particle from a charged black hole can be written in the same form as that of a scalar particle. For the low energy quantum gravity effective models which respect covariance of the curved spacetime, we derive the deformed model-independent KG/Dirac and Hamilton-Jacobi equations using the methods of effective field theory. We then find that, to all orders of the effective theories, the deformed Hamilton-Jacobi equations can be obtained from the …
We study numerically the first order radiative corrections to the self-energy, in covariant loop quantum gravity. We employ the recently developed 'sl2cfoam-next' spinfoam amplitudes library, and some original numerical methods. We analyze the scaling of the divergence with the infrared cutoff, for which previous analytical estimates provided widely different lower and upper bounds. Our findings suggest that the divergence is approximately linear in the cutoff. We also investigate the role of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter in the asymptotic behavior, the dependence of the scaling on some bounda…
We investigate Euclidean wormholes in Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity to explain the creation of the universe from nothing. We considered two types of dilaton couplings (i.e., the string-inspired model and the Gaussian model) and we obtained qualitatively similar results. There can exist Euclidean wormholes that explain the possible origin of our universe, where the dilaton field is located over the barrier of dilaton potential. This solution can exist even if dilaton potential does not satisfy slow-roll conditions. In addition, the probability is higher than that of the Hawking-Moss instanton wi…
We investigate the necessary condition for the existence of classical Euclidean wormholes in a conformally non-invariant gravitational model minimally coupled to an scalar field. It is shown that while the original Ricci tensor with positive eigenvalues does not allow the Euclidean wormholes to occur, under dynamical conformal transformations the Ricci tensor, with respect to the original metric, is dynamically coupled with the conformal field and its eigenvalues may become negative allowing the Euclidean wormholes to occur. Therefore, it is conjectured that dynamical conformal transformations…
This paper describes recent progress in the analysis of relativistic gauge conditions for Euclidean Maxwell theory in the presence of boundaries. The corresponding quantum amplitudes are studied by using Faddeev-Popov formalism and zeta-function regularization, after expanding the electromagnetic potential in harmonics on the boundary 3-geometry. This leads to a semiclassical analysis of quantum amplitudes, involving transverse modes, ghost modes, coupled normal and longitudinal modes, and the decoupled normal mode of Maxwell theory. On imposing magnetic or electric boundary conditions, flat E…
