We investigate the necessary condition for the existence of classical Euclidean wormholes in a conformally non-invariant gravitational model minimally coupled to an scalar field. It is shown that while the original Ricci tensor with positive eigenvalues does not allow the Euclidean wormholes to occur, under dynamical conformal transformations the Ricci tensor, with respect to the original metric, is dynamically coupled with the conformal field and its eigenvalues may become negative allowing the Euclidean wormholes to occur. Therefore, it is conjectured that dynamical conformal transformations may provide us with {\it effective} forms of matter sources leading to Euclidean wormholes in conformally non-invariant systems.
We study the classical Euclidean wormhole solutions for the gravitational systems with minimally coupled pure Phantom field and minimally coupled Phantom field accompanied by perfect fluid. It is shown that such solutions do exist and then the general forms of the Phantom field potential are obtained for which there are classical Euclidean wormhole solutions.
We solve the Euclidean Einstein equations with non-Abelian gauge fields of sufficiently large symmetry in various dimensions. In higher-dimensional spaces, we find the solutions which are similar to so-called scalar wormholes. In four-dimensional space-time, we find singular wormhole solutions with infinite Euclidean action. Wormhole solutions in the three-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a Chern-Simons term are also constructed.
This paper discusses the effect that conformal symmetry can have on a charged wormhole. The analysis yields a physical interpretation of the conformal factor in terms of the electric charge. The rate of change of the conformal factor determines much of the outcome, which ranges from having no solution to wormholes having either one or two throats.
A detailed study of quantum and semiclassical Euclidean wormholes for Einstein's theory with a minimally coupled scalar field has been performed for a class of potentials. Massless, constant, massive (quadratic in the scalar field) and inverse (linear) potentials admit Hawking and Page wormhole boundary condition both in the classically forbidden and allowed regions. Inverse quartic potential has been found to exhibit semiclassical wormhole configuration. Classical wormholes under suitable back-reaction leading to a finite radius of the throat, where strong energy condition is satisfied, have …
Wormholes are considered both from the Wheeler deWitt equation, as well as from the field equations in the Euclidean background of Roberson Walker mini-superspace in $R^2$ gravity. Quantum wormhole satisfies Hawking Page wormhole boundary condition in the Euclidean background of mini-superspace, however, in the Lorentzian background wave functional turns to the usual oscillatory function. The Euclidean field equations for $κ=0, \pm1$ lead to the wormhole configuration; as well as oscillating universe in Euclidean time $τ$. The oscillating universe is equivalent to expanding universe under anal…
It has been argued that wormholes are as good a prediction of Einstein's theory as black holes but the theoretical construction requires a reverse strategy, specifying the desired geometric properties of the wormhole and leaving open the determination of the stress-energy tensor. We begin by confirming an earlier result by the author showing that a complete wormhole solution can be obtained by adopting the equation of state $p=ωρ$ and assuming that the wormhole admits a one-parameter group of conformal motions. The main purpose of this paper is to use the assumption of conformal symmetry to sh…
When Morris and Thorne first proposed that traversable wormholes may be actual physical objects, they concentrated on the geometry by specifying the shape and redshift functions. This mathematical approach necessarily raises questins regarding the determination of the required stress-energy tensor. This paper discusses a natural way to obtain a complete wormhole solution by assuming that the wormhole (1) is supported by generalized Chaplygin gas and (2) admits conformal Killing vectors.
In this article, we study the possibility of sustaining a static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole geometries admitting conformal motion in Einstein gravity, which presents a more systematic approach to search a relation between matter and geometry. In wormhole physics, the presence of exotic matter is a fundamental ingredient and we show that this exotic source can be dark energy type which support the existence of wormhole spacetimes. In this work we model a wormhole supported by dark energy which admits conformal motion. We also discuss the possibility of detection of wormholes…
We study the stability of static, spherically symmetric, traversable wormholes existing due to conformal continuations in a class of scalar-tensor theories with zero scalar field potential (so that Fisher's well-known scalar-vacuum solution holds in the Einstein conformal frame). Specific examples of such wormholes are those with nonminimally (e.g., conformally) coupled scalar fields. All boundary conditions for scalar and metric perturbations are taken into account. All such wormholes are shown to be unstable under spherically symmetric perturbations. The instability is proved analytically wi…
We present some wormhole configurations using analytic and numerical solutions of the Euclidean field equations considering Einstein Gauss Bonnet dilaton coupled interaction in the Robertson Walker metric. Analytic solutions invoking slow-roll type approximation for some potentials yield identical wormholes in the early era. Eventually, in a later era, the universe enters to an expanding era much faster than usual inflation accompanied by oscillations with analytic continuation τ=it. The numerical solutions of wormholes in terms of the scale factor a(τ) are almost identical for some standard p…
Exact solutions of traversable wormholes were recently found under the assumption of spherical symmetry and the existence of a non-static conformal symmetry. In this paper, we verify that in the case of the conformally symmetric spacetimes with a non-static vector field generating the symmetry, the conformal factor $ψ$ can be physically interpreted in terms of a measurable quantity, namely, the tangential velocity of a massive test particle moving in a stable circular orbit in the spacetime. Physical properties of the rotational velocity of test particles and of the redshift of radiation emitt…
The problem of topology change transitions in quantum gravity is discussed. We argue that the contribution of the Giddings-Strominger wormhole to the Euclidean path integral is pure imaginary. This is checked by two techniques: by the functional integral approach and by the analysis of the Wheeler-De Witt equation. We present also a simple quantum mechanical model which shares many features of the system consisting of parent and baby universes. In this simple model, we show that quantum coherence is completely lost and obtain the equation for the effective density matrix of the ''parent univer…
This paper presents a new wormhole solution by assuming that a homogeneously distributed fluid with equation of state $p=ωρ$ can be adapted to an anisotropic spacetime such as a wormhole and that this spacetime admits a one-parameter group of conformal motions. The pressure $p$ in the equation of state becomes the lateral pressure $p_t$ instead of the radial pressure $p_r$, as assumed in previous studies. Given that $p_t=ωρ$, $p_r$ is then determined from the Einstein field equations. A wormhole solution can be obtained only if $ω<-1$ or $0<ω<1$. Since the former case corresponds to phantom da…
When Morris and Thorne first proposed the possible existence of traversable wormholes, they adopted the following strategy: maintain complete control over the geometry, thereby leaving open the determination of the stress-energy tensor. In this paper we determine this tensor by starting with a noncommutative-geometry background and assuming that the static and spherically symmetric spacetime admits conformal motions. This had been established in a previous collaboration with Rahaman et al. using a slightly different approach. Accordingly, the main purpose of this paper is to show that the worm…
The theoretical construction of a traversable wormhole proposed by Morris and Thorne maintains complete control over the geometry by assigning both the shape and redshift functions, thereby leaving open the determination of the stress-energy tensor. This paper examines the effect of introducing the linear barotropic equation of state $p_r=ωρ$ on the theoretical construction. If either the energy density or the closely related shape function is known, then the Einstein field equations do not ordinarily yield a finite redshift function. If, however, the wormhole admits a one-parameter group of c…
We consider a traversable wormhole solution of Einstein's gravity conformally coupled to a massless scalar field, a solution derived by Barcelo and Visser based on the JNWW spacetime. We study the geodesic motion of time-, light- and space-like particles in this spacetime. We solve the equations of motion analytically in terms of the Weierstraß\ functions and discuss all possible orbit types and their parameter dependence. Interestingly, bound orbits occur for time-like geodesics only in one of the two worlds. Moreover, under no conditions there exist time-like two world bound orbits.
Wormholes -- solutions to the euclidean Einstein equations with non-trivial topology -- are usually assumed to make real contributions to amplitudes in quantum gravity. However, we find a negative mode among fluctuations about the Giddings-Strominger wormhole solution. Hence, the wormhole contribution to the euclidean functional integral is argued to be purely imaginary rather than real, which suggests the interpretation of the wormhole as describing the instability of a large universe against the emission of baby universes.
Using simplicial minisuperspace techniques we obtain a wormhole configuration, capable of modelling both a throat between two equal Euclidean and Lorentzian universes. Computing the wavefunction associated to such configuration we conclude that for Planck-size Euclidean wormholes there is a prediction of a finite non-vanishing radius of their throat, even in the absence of matter. The wavefunction associated to their Lorentzian counterparts predicts the growth of the wormhole's throat as the two Lorentzian universes expand.
We present a few Euclidean wormhole configurations using both the analytic and numerical solutions of the field equations considering Einstein Gauss-Bonnet dilaton interaction in 4-dimensional Robertson Walker Euclidean background. In one analytic solution we present transition from a wormhole to an exponential expansion with Lorentzian time $t$ using $τ=it$ after passing through an era of oscillating Euclidean wormhole. The numerical solutions of the scale factor $a(τ)$ show multiple local maxima and minima about a global minimum for inverse power law potentials, while for exponential potenti…
The effects of asymptotically anti-de Sitter wormholes in low-energy field theory are calculated in full detail for three different matter contents: a conformal scalar field, an electromagnetic field and gravitons. There exists a close relation between the choice of vacuum for the matter fields and the selection of a basis of the Hilbert space of anti-de Sitter wormholes. In the presence of conformal matter (i.e., conformal scalar or electromagnetic fields), this relation allows us to interpret the elements of these bases as wormhole states containing a given number of particles. This interpre…
We model the spacetime foam picture by a gas of wormholes in Euclidean field theory. It is shown that at large distances the presence of such a gas leads merely to a renormalization of mass and charge values. We also demonstrate that there exist a class of specific distributions of point-like wormholes which essentially change the ultraviolet behavior of Green functions and lead to finite quantum field theories.
In this paper, we consider wormhole geometries in the context of teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR) as well as $f(T)$ gravity. The TEGR is an alternative geometrical formulation of Einstein's general relativity, where modified teleparallel gravity or $f(T)$ gravity has been invoked as an alternative approach for explaining an accelerated expansion of the universe. We present the analytical solutions under the assumption of spherical symmetry and the existence of a conformal Killing vectors to proceed a more systematic approach in searching for exact wormhole solutions. More p…
We show that Euclidean axion wormholes in theories of gravity coupled to a single axion have several independent inhomogeneous perturbations that lower the Euclidean action. Our analysis relies on a judiciously chosen gauge-invariant variable which makes the negative mode structure about axion wormholes transparent. Perturbations lowering the action are concentrated in the neck region and exist for wormholes in flat space and in AdS. Their presence means axion wormholes are not relevant saddle points of the functional integral in quantum gravity. This resolves the paradoxes associated with the…
In this article, we have discussed Morris and Thorne (MT) wormhole solutions in a modified theory of gravity that admits conformal motion. Here we explore the wormhole solutions in $f(R,\,T)$ gravity, which is a function of the Ricci scalar ($R$) and the trace of the stress-energy tensor ($T$). To study wormhole geometries, we make assumption of spherical symmetric static spacetime and the existence of conformal Killing symmetry to get more acceptable astrophysical outcomes. To do this, we choose the expression of $f(R,\,T)$ as $f(R,T)= R+2 γT$. Here we employ the phantom energy EoS relating t…
In this manuscript, we explore the existence of wormhole solutions exhibiting spherical symmetry in a modified gravity namely $f(R,T)$ theory by involving some aspects of non-commutative geometry. For this purpose, we consider the anisotropic matter contents along with the well-known Gaussian and Lorentizian distributions of string theory. For the sake of simplicity in analytic discussions, we take a specific form of $f(R,T)$ function given by $f(R,T)=R+λT$. For both these non-commutative distributions, we get exact solutions in terms of exponential and hypergeometric functions. By taking some…
We present a new class of solutions for static spherically symmetric wormhole spacetimes in conformal gravity and outline a detailed method for their construction. As an explicit example, we construct a class of traversable and non-traversable wormholes that are locally conformal to Schwarzschild-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes. These wormhole spacetimes are exact vacuum solutions in, but not being limited to, Weyl gravity and conformal scalar-tensor theories. Importantly, the method implies that every conformal theory of gravity with static spherically symmetric solutions will trivially contain w…
We investigate Euclidean wormholes in Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity to explain the creation of the universe from nothing. We considered two types of dilaton couplings (i.e., the string-inspired model and the Gaussian model) and we obtained qualitatively similar results. There can exist Euclidean wormholes that explain the possible origin of our universe, where the dilaton field is located over the barrier of dilaton potential. This solution can exist even if dilaton potential does not satisfy slow-roll conditions. In addition, the probability is higher than that of the Hawking-Moss instanton wi…
We investigate Euclidean wormholes in Einstein gravity with a massless scalar field in de Sitter space. Euclidean wormholes are possible due to the analytic continuation of the time as well as complexification of fields, where we need to impose the classicality after the Wick-rotation to the Lorentzian signatures. For some parameters, wormholes are preferred than Hawking-Moss instantons, and hence wormholes can be more fundamental than Hawking-Moss type instantons. Euclidean wormholes can be interpreted in three ways: (1) classical big bounce, (2) either tunneling from a small to a large unive…
The behavior of black holes horizon and wormholes under the Weyl conformal transformation is investigated. First, a shorter, but more general, derivation of the Weyl transformation of the simple prescription for detecting horizons and wormholes given recently in the literature for spherically symmetric spacetimes is provided. The derivation allows for a simple and intuitive way to understand why and when horizons and wormholes might arise in the conformal frame even if they were absent in the original frame. Then, the conformal behavior of black holes horizon and wormholes in more general spac…
This paper is devoted to an investigation of Euclidean wormholes made by fuzzy instantons. We investigate the Euclidean path integral in anti-de Sitter space. In Einstein gravity, we introduce a scalar field with a potential. Because of the analyticity, there is a contribution of complex-valued instantons, so-called fuzzy instantons. If we have a massless scalar field, then we obtain Euclidean wormholes, where the probabilities become smaller and smaller as the size of the throat becomes larger and larger. If we introduce a non-trivial potential, then in order to obtain a non-zero tunneling ra…
We study the stability of circular orbits in the background of a traversable wormhole (TWH) spacetime obtained as a solution of Einstein's field equations coupled conformally to a massless scalar field. The Lyapunov stability approach is employed to determine the stability of circular orbits (timelike and null) of non-spinning test particles around a TWH spacetime. In the case of timelike geodesics, the particle is confined to move in four different types of effective potentials depending on various values of the angular momentum L with both centrifugal and gravitational part. The effective po…

We discuss the structure of a gravitational euclidean instanton obtained through coupling of gravity to electromagnetism. Its topology at fixed $t$ is $S^1\times S^2$. This euclidean solution can be interpreted as a tunnelling to a hyperbolic space (baby universe) at $t=0$ or alternatively as a static wormhole that joins the two asymptotically flat spaces of a Reissner--Nordström type solution with $M=0$.
We study the stability of static, spherically symmetric, traversable wormholes with or without an electric charge, existing due to conformal continuations in a class of scalar-tensor theories with zero scalar field potential (so that Penney's or Fisher's well-known solutions hold in the Einstein conformal frame). Specific examples of such wormholes are those with nonminimally (e.g., conformally) coupled scalar fields. All boundary conditions for scalar and metric perturbations are taken into account. All such wormholes with zero or small electric charge are shown to be unstable under spherical…
We show that the violation of the null energy condition by matter, required by traversable wormholes, can be removed in spacetimes with torsion. In addition, we show that this violation can also be removed in the conformal frame obtained by a Weyl transformation. This comes about because both conformally transformed wormholes and wormholes in spacetimes with torsion become sustained thanks to a combination of 'normal' matter, that satisfies the null energy condition, and an induced 'geometric' energy-momentum tensor that is able to greatly violate the null energy condition.
To find more deliberate $f(R, T)$ astrophysical solutions, we proceed by studying wormhole geometries under the assumption of spherical symmetry and the existence of a conformal Killing symmetry to attain the more acceptable astrophysical results. To do this, we consider a more plausible and simple model $f(R,T)=R+2χT$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T= -ρ+p_r+2p_t$ denotes the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the matter content. We explore and analyze two cases separately. In the first part, wormhole solutions are constructed for the matter sources with isotropic pressure. However, …
We study the classical Euclidean wormholes in the context of extended theories of gravity. With no loss of generality, we use the dynamical equivalence between $f(\tilde{R})$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories to construct a point-like Lagrangian in the flat FRW space time. We first show the dynamical equivalence between Palatini $f(\tilde{R})$ gravity and the Brans-Dicke theory with self-interacting potential, and then show the dynamical equivalence between the Brans-Dicke theory with self-interacting potential and the minimally coupled O'Hanlon theory. We show the existence of new Euclidean …
In this paper, we investigate complex-valued Euclidean wormholes in the Starobinsky inflation. Due to the properties of the concave inflaton potential, the classicality condition at both ends of the wormhole can be satisfied, as long as the initial condition of the inflaton field is such that it is located sufficiently close to the hilltop. We compare the probabilities of classicalized wormholes with the Hartle-Hawking compact instantons and conclude that the Euclidean wormholes are probabilistically preferred than compact instantons, if the inflation lasts more than 50 e-foldings. Our result …
Solutions of the field equations of theories of gravity which admit distinct conformal frame representations can look very different in these frames. We show that Brans class IV solutions describe wormholes in the Jordan frame (in a certain parameter range) but correspond to horizonless geometries in the Einstein frame. The reasons for such a change of behaviour under conformal mappings are elucidated in general, using Brans IV solutions as an example.
The massless conformally coupled scalar field is characterized by the so-called "new improved stress-energy tensor", which is capable of classically violating the null energy condition. When coupled to Einstein gravity we find a three-parameter class of exact solutions. These exact solutions include the Schwarzschild geometry, assorted naked singularities, and a large class of traversable wormholes.
A gravitational scenario is proposed where the euclidean action is invariant under the isotropic and homogeneous version of the euclidean {\it U(1)} group of local transformations of the scale factor and scalar matter field, interpreting the the trace of the second fundamental form as the gauge field. The model allows spontaneous breakdown of some involved symmetries, including possibly diffeomorphism invariance, and leads to the formation of topologiocal deffects. In particular, we consider here the case of the wormhole-induced formation of cosmic strings. (To appear in the Proceedings of the…
We present an analysis of the classic wormhole geometries based on conformal Weyl gravity, rather than standard general relativity. The main characteristics of the resulting traversable wormholes remain the same as in the seminal study by Morris and Thorne, namely, that effective super-luminal motion is a viable consequence of the metric. Improving on previous work on the subject, we show that for particular choices of the shape and redshift functions the wormhole metric in the context of conformal gravity does not violate the main energy conditions at or near the wormhole throat. Some exotic …
We study complex saddles of the Lorentzian path integral for 4D axion gravity and its dual description in terms of a 3-form flux, which include the Giddings-Strominger Euclidean wormhole. Transition amplitudes are computed using the Lorentzian path integral and with the help of Picard-Lefschetz theory. The number and nature of saddles is shown to qualitatively change in the presence of a bilocal operator that could arise, for example, as a result of considering higher-topology transitions. We also analyze the stability of the Giddings-Strominger wormhole in the 3-form picture, where we find th…
This article is based on the study of wormhole geometries in the context of symmetric teleparallel gravity or $f(Q)$ gravity, where $Q$ is the non-metricity scalar, and it is responsible for the gravitational interaction. To discuss the wormhole solutions, we consider spherically symmetric static spacetime metric with anisotropic matter contents under well-known non-commutative distributions known as Gaussian and Lorentzian distributions with an extra condition of permitting conformal killing vectors (CKV). This work aims to obtain wormhole solutions under these distributions, and through we f…
A modified semi-classical method is used to construct both ground and excited state solutions to the canonically quantized vacuum Bianchi IX (Mixmaster) cosmological models. Employing a modified form of the semi-classical Ansatz we solve the relevant Wheeler-DeWitt equation asymptotically by integrating a set of linear transport equations along the flow of a suitably chosen solution to the corresponding Euclidean-signature Hamilton-Jacobi equation. For the Moncrief-Ryan (or `wormhole') Hamilton-Jacobi solution, we compute the ground state quantum correction term associated with operator orderi…
