The main purpose in the present paper is to build a Hamiltonian theory for fields which is consistent with the principles of relativity. For this we consider detailed geometric pictures of Lepage theories in the spirit of Dedecker and try to stress out the interplay between the Lepage-Dedecker (LP) description and the (more usual) de Donder-Weyl (dDW) one. For instance the Legendre transform in the dDW approach is replaced by a Legendre correspondence in the LP theory, while ignoring singularities whenever the Lagrangian is degenerate. Moreover we show that there exist two different definitions of the observable (n-1)-forms which allows one to construct observable functionals by integration (which correspond to two different points of view: generalizing the law {p,q} = 1 or the law dF\dt = {H,F}), oddly enough we prove that these two definitions coincides only in the LP situation. Finally other contributions concerning this subject and examples are also given.
The covariant phase space of a Lagrangian field theory is the solution space of the associated Euler-Lagrange equations. It is, in principle, a nice environment for covariant quantization of a Lagrangian field theory. Indeed, it is manifestly covariant and possesses a canonical (functional) "presymplectic structure" w (as first noticed by Zuckerman in 1986) whose degeneracy (functional) distribution is naturally interpreted as the Lie algebra of gauge transformations. We propose a fully rigorous approach to the covariant phase space in the framework of secondary calculus. In particular we desc…

For this we consider detailed geometric pictures of Lepage theories in the spirit of Dedecker and try to stress out the interplay between the Lepage-Dedecker (LP) description and the (more usual) de Donder-Weyl (dDW) one. One of the main points is the fact that the Legendre transform in the dDW approach is replaced by a Legendre correspondence in the LP theory (This correspondence behaves differently: ignoring the singularities whenever the Lagrangian is dege…
Using the fact that the algebra M(3,C) of 3 x 3 complex matrices can be taken as a reduced quantum plane, we build a differential calculus Omega(S) on the quantum space S defined by the algebra C^\infty(M) \otimes M(3,C), where M is a space-time manifold. This calculus is covariant under the action and coaction of finite dimensional dual quantum groups. We study the star structures on these quantum groups and the compatible one in M(3,C). This leads to an invariant scalar product on the later space. We analyse the differential algebra Omega(M(3,C)) in terms of quantum group representations, an…
Given a bicovariant differential calculus $(\mathcal{E}, d)$ such that the braiding map is diagonalisable in a certain sense, the bimodule of two-tensors admits a direct sum decomposition into symmetric and anti-symmetric tensors. This is used to prove the existence of a bicovariant torsionless connection on $\mathcal{E}$. Following Heckenberger and Schm{ü}dgen, we study invariant metrics and the compatibility of covariant connections with such metrics. A sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of bicovariant Levi-Civita connections is derived. This condition is shown to hold for…
The covariant canonical formalism is a covariant extension of the traditional canonical formalism of fields. In contrast to the traditional canonical theory, it has a remarkable feature that canonical equations of gauge theories or gravity are not only manifestly Lorentz covariant but also gauge covariant or diffeomorphism covariant. A mathematical peculiarity of the covariant canonical formalism is that its canonical coordinates are differential forms on a manifold. In the present paper, we find a natural Poisson bracket of this new canonical theory, and study symplectic structure behind it. …
Unified graded differential algebra, generated by $κ$-Minkowski noncommutative (NC) coordinates, Lorentz generators and anticommuting one-forms, is constructed. It is compatible with $κ$-Poincaré-Hopf algebra. For time- and space-like deformations, the super-Jacobi identities are not satisfied. By introducing additional generator, interpreted as exterior derivative, we find a new unique algebra that satisfies all super-Jacobi identities. It is universal and valid for all type of deformations (time-, space-, and light-like). For time-like deformations this algebra coincides with the one in \cit…
We prove that, for any theory defined over a space-time with boundary, the symplectic form derived in the covariant phase space is equivalent to the one derived from the canonical formalism.
This paper outlines a covariant theory of operators defined on groups and homogeneous spaces. A systematic use of groups and their representations allows to obtain results of algebraic and analytical nature. The consideration is systematically illustrated by a representative collection of examples. Keywords: Lie groups and algebras, convolution operator, relative convolution, representation theory, pseudo-differential operators, PDO, singular integral operator, SIO, the Heisenberg group, SL(2,R), induced representation, Fock-Segal-Bargmann (FSB) representation, Shrodinger representation, covar…
This papers is concerned with multisymplectic formalisms which are the frameworks for Hamiltonian theories for fields theory. Our main purpose is to study the observable $(n-1)$-forms which allows one to construct observable functionals on the set of solutions of the Hamilton equations by integration. We develop here two different points of view: generalizing the law $\{p,q\} = 1$ or the law $dF/dt = \{H,F\}$. This leads to two possible definitions; we explore the relationships and the differences between these two concepts. We show that -- in contrast with the de Donder--Weyl theory -- the tw…
In this article we construct a large class of interacting Euclidean quantum field theories, over a p-adic space time, by using white noise calculus. We introduce p-adic versions of the Kondratiev and Hida spaces in order to use the Wick calculus on the Kondratiev spaces. The quantum fields introduced here fulfill all the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms, except the reflection positivity.
The Lorentz-covariant quantization performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism for massless non-Abelian gauge fields has been achieved. In this quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a constraint, must be introduced initially and incorporated into the Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange undetermined multiplier method. In this way, it is found that all Lorentz components of a vector potential have thier corresponding conjugate canonical variables. This fact allows us to define Lorentz-invariant poisson brackets and carry out the quantization in a Lorent-covariant manner. Key words: …
The massive non-Abelian gauge fields are quantized Lorentz-covariantly in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism. In the quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a necessary constraint, is introduced initially and incorporated into the massive Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange multiplier method so as to make each temporal component of a vector potential to have a canonically conjugate counterpart. The result of this quantization is confirmed by the quantization performed in the Lagrangian path-integral formalism by applying the Lagrange multiplier method which is shown to be equivalent to …
We introduce the basic elements of SO(n)-local theory of Regge Calculus. A first order formalism, in the sense of Palatini, is defined on the metric-dual Voronoi complex of a simplicial complex. The Quantum Measure exhibits an expansion, in four dimensions, in characters of irreducible representation of SO(4) which has close resemblance and differences as well with the Spin Foam Formalism. The coupling with fermionic matter is easily introduced which could have consequences for the Spin Foam Formalism and Loop Quantum Gravity.
Using a covariant and gauge invariant geometric structure constructed on the Witten covariant phase space for Dirac-Nambu-Goto bosonic p-branes propagating in a curved background, we find the canonically conjugate variables, and the relevant commutation relations are considered, as well as, we find the canonical variables for the Gauss-Bonnet topological term in string theory.
Chern--Simons type Lagrangians in $d=3$ dimensions are analyzed from the point of view of their covariance and globality. We use the transgression formula to find out a new fully covariant and global Lagrangian for Chern--Simons gravity: the price for establishing globality is hidden in a bimetric (or biconnection) structure. Such a formulation allows to calculate from a global and simpler viewpoint the energy-momentum complex and the superpotential both for Yang--Mills and gravitational examples.
A space-time symmetric and explicitly Lorentz covariant path integral formalism of relativistic quantum mechanics is proposed, which produces partial locally correlations of quantum processes of massive particles with the velocity of light at low energy limits. A superluminal correlation is also possible if anti-particles that moving along reverse time direction are excited. This provides a new point of view to interpret EPR experiments, also leaks a light of hope for hidden variable theories.
In the framework of polysymplectic Hamiltonian formalism, degenerate Lagrangian field systems are described as multi-Hamiltonian systems with Lagrangian constraints. The physically relevant case of degenerate quadratic Lagrangians is analized in detail, and the Koszul--Tate resolution of Lagrangian constraints is constructed in an explicit form. The particular case of Hamiltonian mechanics with time-dependent constraints is studied.
Path integrals are a central tool when it comes to describing quantum or thermal fluctuations of particles or fields. Their success dates back to Feynman who showed how to use them within the framework of quantum mechanics. Since then, path integrals have pervaded all areas of physics where fluctuation effects, quantum and/or thermal, are of paramount importance. Their appeal is based on the fact that one converts a problem formulated in terms of operators into one of sampling classical paths with a given weight. Path integrals are the mirror image of our conventional Riemann integrals, with f…
The building blocks of Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus start with Weyl operators on a symmetric Fock space. To realize a relativistically covariant version of the calculus we construct representations of Poincare group in terms of Weyl operators on suitably constructed, Bosonic or Fermionic based on the mass and spin of the fundamental particle, Fock spaces. We proceed by describing the orbits of homogeneous Lorentz group on R4 and build fiber bundle representations of Poincaré group induced from the stabilizer subgroups (little groups) and build the Boson Fock space of the Hi…
The formulation of a relativistic dynamical problem as a system of Hamilton equations by respecting the principles of Relativity is a delicate task, because in their classical form the Hamilton equations require the use of a time coordinate, which of course contradicts the Relativity. Two interesting solutions have been proposed during the last century: the covariant phase space and the multisymplectic formalism. These two approaches were inspired at the beginning by different points of view. However, as shown by works by Kijowski-Szczyrba, Forger-Romero and Vitagliano, a synthetic vision of t…
We bring together aspects of covariant Hamiltonian field theory and of classical integrable field theories in $1+1$ dimensions. Specifically, our main result is to obtain for the first time the classical $r$-matrix structure within a covariant Poisson bracket for the Lax connection, or Lax one form. This exhibits a certain covariant nature of the classical $r$-matrix with respect to the underlying spacetime variables. The main result is established by means of several prototypical examples of integrable field theories, all equipped with a Zakharov-Shabat type Lax pair. Full details are present…
We consider the variational complex on infinite jet space and the complex of variational derivatives for Lagrangians of multidimensional paths and study relations between them. The discussion of the variational (bi)complex is set up in terms of a flat connection in the jet bundle. We extend it to supercase using a particular new class of forms. We establish relation of the complex of variational derivatives and the variational complex. Certain calculus of Lagrangians of multidimensional paths is developed. It is shown how covariant Lagrangians of higher order can be used to represent character…
In a first part we propose an introduction to multisymplectic formalisms, which are generalisations of Hamilton's formulation of Mechanics to the calculus of variations with several variables: we give some physical motivations, related to the quantum field theory, and expound the simplest example, based on a theory due to T. de Donder and H. Weyl. In a second part we explain quickly a work in collaboration with J. Kouneiher (math-ph/0211046) on generalizations of the de Donder--Weyl theory (known as Lepage theories). Lastly we show that in this framework a perturbative classical field theory (…
Within the geometrical framework developed in arXiv:0705.2362, the problem of minimality for constrained calculus of variations is analysed among the class of differentiable curves. A fully covariant representation of the second variation of the action functional, based on a suitable gauge transformation of the Lagrangian, is explicitly worked out. Both necessary and sufficient conditions for minimality are proved, and are then reinterpreted in terms of Jacobi fields.
In this paper, we construct a covariant differential calculus on quantum plane with two-parametric quantum group as a symmetry group. The two cases $d^2=0$ and $d^3=0$ are completly established. We also construct differential calculi $n=2$ and $n=3$ nilpotent on super quantum space with one and two-parametric symmetry quantum supergroup.
In this paper, the notion of strongly typed language will be borrowed from the field of computer programming to introduce a calculational framework for linear algebra and tensor calculus for the purpose of detecting errors resulting from inherent misuse of objects and for finding natural formulations of various objects. A tensor bundle formalism, crucially relying on the notion of pullback bundle, will be used to create a rich type system with which to distinguish objects. The type system and relevant notation is designed to "telescope" to accomodate a level of detail appropriate to a set of c…
The present work contains a complete formulation of the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism in the framework of locally covariant field theory. In the first part of the thesis the classical theory is investigated with a particular focus on the infinite dimensional character of the underlying structures. It is shown that the use of infinite dimensional differential geometry allows for a conceptually clear and elegant formulation. The construction of the BV complex is performed in a fully covariant way and we also generalize the BV framework to a more abstract level, using functors and natural tra…
We investigate generators of local gauge transformations in the covariant canonical formalism (CCF) for matter fields, gauge fields and the second order formalism of gravity. The CCF treats space and time on an equal footing regarding the differential forms as the basic variables. The conjugate forms $π_A$ are defined as derivatives of the Lagrangian $d$-form $L(ψ^A, dψ^A)$ with respect to $dψ^A$, namely $π_A := \partial L/\partial dψ^A$, where $ψ^A $ are $p$-form dynamical fields. The form-canonical equations are derived from the form-Legendre transformation of the Lagrangian form $H:=dψ^A \w…
We give a self-contained exposition of some mathematical aspects of the Mueller-Stokes formalism. In the first part we review some basic notions of linear algebra and establish a proper notation. In the second part we introduce the Mueller-Stokes formalism and derive some useful mathematical relation between physical quantities. Finally a useful decomposition theorem is reviewed.
We study spacetime diffeomorphisms in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalisms of generally covariant systems. We show that the gauge group for such a system is characterized by having generators which are projectable under the Legendre map. The gauge group is found to be much larger than the original group of spacetime diffeomorphisms, since its generators must depend on the lapse function and shift vector of the spacetime metric in a given coordinate patch. Our results are generalizations of earlier results by Salisbury and Sundermeyer. They arise in a natural way from using the requirement of …
Using the procedures in \cite{Bu} and \cite{GMS} and the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus we have developped in \cite{MP1,MPR1,IMP1,IMP2} we construct an effective Hamitonian that describes the spectrum in any compact subset of the real axis for a large class of periodic pseudodifferential Hamiltonians in a bounded smooth magnetic field, in a completely gauge covariant setting, without any restrictions on the vector potential and without any adiabaticity hypothesis.
Many physically important mechanical systems may be described with a Lie group $G$ as configuration space. According to the well-known Noether's theorem, underlying symmetries of the Lie group may be used to considerably reduce the complexity of the problems. However, these reduction techniques, used without care for general problems (waves, field theory), may lead to uncomfortable infinite dimensional spaces. As an alternative, the \emph{covariant} formulation allows to consider a finite dimensional configuration space by increasing the number of independent variables. But the geometric eleme…
We develop the foundations of Algebraic Stochastic Calculus, with an aim to replacing what is typically referred to as Stochastic Calculus by a purely categorical version thereof. We first give a sheaf theoretic reinterpretation of Probability Theory. We regard probability spaces (X, F, P) as Grothendieck sites (F, J_P) on which Brownian motions are defined via sheaves in symmetric monoidal infinity-categories. Due to the complex nature of such a formalism we are naturally led to considering a purely categorical, time independent formalism in which stochastic differential equations are replace…
In the presence of a variable magnetic field, the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus must be modified. The usual modification, based on ``the minimal coupling principle'' at the level of the classical symbols, does not lead to gauge invariant formulae if the magnetic field is not constant. We present a gauge covariant quantization, relying on the magnetic canonical commutation relations. The underlying symbolic calculus is a deformation, defined in terms of the magnetic flux through triangles, of the classical Moyal product.
Fractals equipped with intrinsic arithmetic lead to a natural definition of differentiation, integration and complex numbers. Applying the formalism to the problem of a Fourier transform on fractals we show that the resulting transform has all the expected basic properties. As an example we discuss a sawtooth signal on the ternary middle-third Cantor set. The formalism works also for fractals that are not self-similar.
