The density matrix of composite spin system is discussed in relation to the adjoint representation of unitary group U(n). The entanglement structure is introduced as an additional ingredient to the description of the linear space carrying the adjoint representation. Positive maps of density operator are related to random matrices. The tomographic probability description of quantum states is used to formulate the problem of separability and entanglement as the condition for joint probability distribution of several random variables represented as the convex sum of products of probabilities of random variables describing the subsystems. The property is discussed as a possible criterion for separability or entanglement. The convenient criterion of positivity of finite and infinite matrix is obtained. The U(n)-tomogram of a multiparticle spin state is introduced. The entanglement measure is considered in terms of this tomogram.
We show that weighted unitary 2-designs define optimal measurements on the system-ancilla output state for ancilla-assisted process tomography of unital quantum channels. Examples include complete sets of mutually unbiased unitary-operator bases. Each of these specifies a minimal series of optimal orthogonal measurements. General quantum channels are also considered.
We study quantum process tomography given the prior information that the map is a unitary or close to a unitary process. We show that a unitary map on a $d$-level system is completely characterized by a minimal set of $d^2{+}d$ elements associated with a collection of POVMs, in contrast to the $d^4{-}d^2$ elements required for a general completely positive trace-preserving map. To achieve this lower bound, one must probe the map with a particular set of $d$ pure states. We further compare the performance of different compressed sensing algorithms used to reconstruct a near-unitary process from…
We study the number of measurements required for quantum process tomography under prior information, such as a promise that the unknown channel is unitary. We introduce the notion of an interactive observable and we show that any unitary channel acting on a $d$-level quantum system can be uniquely identified among all other channels (unitary or otherwise) with only $O(d^2)$ interactive observables, as opposed to the $O(d^4)$ required for tomography of arbitrary channels. This result generalizes, so that channels with at most $q$ Kraus operators can be identified with only $O(qd^2)$ interactive…
We study quantum tomography from a continuous measurement record obtained by measuring expectation values of a set of Hermitian operators obtained from unitary evolution of an initial observable. For this purpose, we consider the application of a random unitary, diagonal in a fixed basis at each time step and quantify the information gain in tomography using Fisher information of the measurement record and the Shannon entropy associated with the eigenvalues of covariance matrix of the estimation. Surprisingly, very high fidelity of reconstruction is obtained using random unitaries diagonal in …
We provide several applications of a previously introduced isomorphism between physical operations acting on two systems and entangled states [1]. We show: (i) how to implement (weakly) non-local two qubit unitary operations with a small amount of entanglement; (ii) that a known, noisy, non-local unitary operation as well as an unknown, noisy, local unitary operation can be purified; (iii) how to perform the tomography of arbitrary, unknown, non-local operations; (iv) that a set of local unitary operations as well as a set of non-local unitary operations can be stored and compressed; (v) how t…
We investigate quantum state tomography (QST) for pure states and quantum process tomography (QPT) for unitary channels via $adaptive$ measurements. For a quantum system with a $d$-dimensional Hilbert space, we first propose an adaptive protocol where only $2d-1$ measurement outcomes are used to accomplish the QST for $all$ pure states. This idea is then extended to study QPT for unitary channels, where an adaptive unitary process tomography (AUPT) protocol of $d^2+d-1$ measurement outcomes is constructed for any unitary channel. We experimentally implement the AUPT protocol in a 2-qubit nucle…
We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a technique for performing quantum state tomography on multiple-qubit states despite incomplete knowledge about the unitary operations used to change the measurement basis. Given unitary operations with unknown rotation angles, our method can be used to reconstruct the density matrix of the state up to local sigma-z rotations as well as recover the magnitude of the unknown rotation angle. We demonstrate high-fidelity self-calibrating tomography on polarization-encoded one- and two-photon states. The unknown unitary operations are realized in two ways…
Linear optical circuits of growing complexity are playing an increasing role in emerging photonic quantum technologies. Individual photonic devices are typically described by a unitary matrix containing amplitude and phase information, the characterisation of which is a key task. We present a constructive scheme to retrieve the unitary matrix describing an arbitrary linear optical device using data obtained from one-photon and two-photon ensembles. The scheme is stable on the arbitrarily increasable length scale of the photon packet and independent of photon loss at input and output ports of t…
Neutral atom systems are an appealing platform for the development and testing of quantum control and measurement techniques. This dissertation presents experimental investigations of control and measurement tools using as a testbed the 16-dimensional hyperfine manifold associated with the electronic ground state of $^{133}$Cs atoms. On the control side, we present an experimental realization of a protocol to implement robust unitary transformations in the presence of static and dynamic perturbations. We also present an experimental realization of inhomogeneous quantum control. Specifically, w…
Quantum process tomography is an experimental technique to fully characterize an unknown quantum process. Standard quantum process tomography suffers from exponentially scaling of the number of measurements with the increasing system size. In this work, we put forward a quantum machine learning algorithm which approximately encodes the unknown unitary quantum process into a relatively shallow depth parametric quantum circuit. We demonstrate our method by reconstructing the unitary quantum processes resulting from the quantum Hamiltonian evolution and random quantum circuits up to $8$ qubits. R…
We develop a technique for single qubit quantum state tomography using the mathematical setup of generalized quantization scheme for games. In our technique Alice sends an unknown pure quantum state to Bob who appends it with |0><0| and then applies the unitary operators on the appended quantum state and finds the payoffs for Alice and himself. It is shown that for a particular set of unitary operators these elements become equal to Stokes parameters for an unknown quantum state. In this way an unknown quantum state can be measured and reconstructed. Strictly speaking this technique is not a g…
We establish a bijection between the self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace operator on a bounded regular domain and the unitary operators on the boundary. Each unitary encodes a specific relation between the boundary value of the function and its normal derivative. This bijection sets up a characterization of all physically admissible dynamics of a nonrelativistic quantum particle confined in a cavity. More- over, this correspondence is discussed also at the level of quadratic forms. Finally, the connection between this parametrization of the extensions and the classical one, in terms of boun…
Universal compilation is a training process that compiles a trainable unitary into a target unitary and it serves vast potential applications from quantum dynamic simulations to optimal circuits with deep-compressing, device benchmarking, quantum error mitigation, and so on. Here, we propose a universal compilation-based variational algorithm for the preparation and tomography of quantum states in low-depth quantum circuits. We apply the Fubini-Study distance to be a trainable cost function under various gradient-based optimizers, including the quantum natural gradient approach. We evaluate th…
Based on recently introduced efficient quantum state tomography schemes, we propose a scalable method for the tomography of unitary processes and the reconstruction of one-dimensional local Hamiltonians. As opposed to the exponential scaling with the number of subsystems of standard quantum process tomography, the method relies only on measurements of linearly many local observables and either (a) the ability to prepare eigenstates of locally informationally complete operators or (b) access to an ancilla of the same size as the to-be-characterized system and the ability to prepare a maximally …
A fundamental task in photonics is to characterise an unknown optical process, defined by properties such as birefringence, spectral response, thickness and flatness. Amongst many ways to achieve this, single-photon probes can be used in a method called quantum process tomography (QPT). Furthermore, QPT is an essential method in determining how a process acts on quantum mechanical states. For example for quantum technology, QPT is used to characterise multi-qubit processors and quantum communication channels; across quantum physics QPT of some form is often the first experimental investigation…
We consider quantum state tomography with measurement procedures of the following type: First, we subject the quantum state we aim to identify to a know time evolution for a desired period of time. Afterwards we perform a measurement with a fixed measurement set-up. This procedure can then be repeated for other periods of time, the measurement set-up however remains unaltered. Given an $n$-dimensional system with suitable unitary dynamics, we show that any two states can be discriminated by performing a measurement with a set-up that has $n$ outcomes at $n+1$ points in time. Furthermore, we co…
We discuss characterization of experimental quantum gates by the error matrix, which is similar to the standard process matrix $χ$ in the Pauli basis, except the desired unitary operation is factored out, by formally placing it either before or after the error process. The error matrix has only one large element, which is equal to the process fidelity, while other elements are small and indicate imperfections. The imaginary parts of the elements along the left column and/or top row directly indicate the unitary imperfection and can be used to find the needed correction. We discuss a relatively…
Quantum process tomography provides a means of measuring the evolution operator for a system at a fixed measurement time $t$. The problem of using that tomographic snapshot to predict the evolution operator at other times is generally ill-posed since there are, in general, infinitely many distinct and compatible solutions. We describe the prediction, in some ``maximal ignorance'' sense, of the evolution of a quantum system based on knowledge only of the evolution operator for finitely many times $0<τ_{1}<\dots<τ_{M}$ with $M\geq 1$. To resolve the ill-posedness problem, we construct this predi…
Quantum tomography for continuous variables is based on the symplectic transformation group acting in the phase space. A particular case of symplectic tomography is optical tomography related to the action of a special orthogonal group. In the tomographic description of spin states, the connection between special unitary and special orthogonal groups is used. We analyze the representation for spin tomography using the Cayley-Klein parameters and discuss an analog of symplectic tomography for discrete variables. We propose a representation for tomograms of discrete variables through quaternions…
Various reconstructions of finite-dimensional quantum mechanics result in a formally real Jordan algebra A and a last step remains to conclude that A is the self-adjoint part of a C*-algebra. Using a quantum logical setting, it is shown that this can be achieved by postulating that there is a locally tomographic model for a composite system consisting of two copies of the same system. Local tomography is a feature of classical probability theory and quantum mechanics; it means that state tomography for a multipartite system can be performed by simultaneous measurements in all subsystems. The q…
Determining an unknown quantum state from an ensemble of identical systems is a fundamental, yet experimentally demanding, task in quantum science. Here we study the number of measurement bases needed to fully characterize an arbitrary multi-mode state containing a definite number of photons, or an arbitrary mixture of such states. We show this task can be achieved using only linear optics and photon counting, which yield a practical though non-universal set of projective measurements. We derive the minimum number of measurement settings required and numerically show that this lower bound is s…
We propose a quantum algorithm for finding eigenvalues of non-unitary matrices. We show how to construct, through interactions in a quantum system and projective measurements, a non-Hermitian or non-unitary matrix and obtain its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This proposal combines ideas of frequent measurement, measured quantum Fourier transform, and quantum state tomography. It provides a generalization of the conventional phase estimation algorithm, which is limited to Hermitian or unitary matrices.
A system-ancilla bipartite state capable of containing the complete information of an unknown quantum channel acting on the system is called faithful. The equivalence between faithfulness of state and invertibility of the corresponding Jamiolkowski map proved by D'Ariano and Presti has been a useful characterization for ancilla-assisted process tomography albeit the proof was incomplete as they assumed trace nonincreasing quantum operations, not quantum channels. We complete the proof of the equivalence and introduce the generalization of faithfulness to various classes of quantum channels. We…
We introduce quantum tomography on locally compact Abelian groups $G$. A linear map from the set of quantum states on the $C^*$-algebra $A(G)$ generated by the projective unitary representation of $G$ to the space of characteristic functions is constructed. The dual map determining symbols of quantum observables from $A(G)$ is derived. Given a characteristic function of a state the quantum tomogram consisting a set of probability distributions is introduced. We provide three examples in which $G={\mathbb R}$ (the optical tomography), $G={\mathbb Z}_n$ (corresponding to measurements in mutually…
We present a formalism for self-calibrating tomography of arbitrary dimensional systems. Self-calibrating quantum state tomography was first introduced in the context of qubits, and allows the reconstruction of the density matrix of an unknown quantum state despite incomplete knowledge of the unitary operations used to change the measurement basis. We show how this can be generalized to qudits, i.e. d-level systems, and provide a specific example for a V-type three-level atomic system whose transition dipole moments are not known. We show that it is always possible to retrieve the unknown stat…
Quantum tomography is a process of quantum state reconstruction using data from multiple measurements. An essential goal for a quantum tomography algorithm is to find measurements that will maximize the useful information about an unknown quantum state obtained through measurements. One of the recently proposed methods of quantum tomography is the algorithm based on rank-preserving transformations. The main idea is to transform a basic measurement set in a way to provide a situation that is equivalent to measuring the maximally mixed state. As long as tomography of a fully mixed state has the …
Complete and precise characterization of a quantum dynamical process can be achieved via the method of quantum process tomography. Using a source of correlated photons, we have implemented several methods investigating a wide range of processes, e.g., unitary, decohering, and polarizing. One of these methods, ancilla-assisted process tomography (AAPT), makes use of an additional ``ancilla system,'' and we have theoretically determined the conditions when AAPT is possible. All prior schemes for AAPT make use of entangled states. Our results show that, surprisingly, entanglement is not required …

Classical shadow tomography provides an efficient method for predicting functions of an unknown quantum state from a few measurements of the state. It relies on a unitary channel that efficiently scrambles the quantum information of the state to the measurement basis. Facing the challenge of realizing deep unitary circuits on near-term quantum devices, we explore the scenario in which the unitary channel can be shallow and is generated by a quantum chaotic Hamiltonian via time evolution. We provide an unbiased estimator of the density matrix for all ranges of the evolution time. We analyze the…
Debugging quantum states transformations is an important task of modern quantum computing. The use of quantum tomography for these purposes significantly expands the range of possibilities. However, the presence of preparation and measurement errors complicates the practical use of this procedure. In this work, we investigate the possibility of estimating these errors from experiment. These estimates are subsequently used to build a robust quantum tomography model. The model allows one to accurately reconstruct unitary errors of single-qubit gates. We show that, having such imperfect single-qu…

We address the problem of quantum process tomography with the preparators producing states correlated with the environmental degrees of freedom that play role in the system-environment interactions. We discuss the physical situations, in which the dynamics is described by nonlinear, or noncompletely positive transformations. In particular, we show that arbitrary mapping $\varrho_{\rm in}\to\varrho_{\rm out}$ can be realized by using appropriate set of preparators and applying the unitary operation SWAP. The experimental ``realization'' of perfect NOT operation is presented. We address the prob…
In this note, we describe a method for reconstructing matrix product states from a small number of efficiently-implementable measurements. Our method is exponentially faster than standard tomography, and it can also be used to certify that the unknown state is an MPS. The basic idea is to use local unitary operations to measure in the Schmidt basis, giving direct access to the MPS representation. This compares favorably with recently and independently proposed methods that recover the MPS tensors by performing a variational minimization, which is computationally intractable in certain cases. We investigate quantum tomography in scenarios where prior information restricts the state space to a smooth manifold of lower dimensionality. By considering stability we provide a general framework that relates the topology of the manifold to the minimal number of binary measurement settings that is necessary to discriminate any two states on the manifold. We apply these findings to cases where the subset of states under consideration is given by states with bounded rank, fixed spectrum, given unitary symmetry or taken from a unitary orbit. For all these cases we provide both upper and lower …
The purpose of this paper is to introduce techniques of obtaining optimal ways to determine a d-level quantum state or distinguish such states. It entails designing constrained elementary measurements extracted from maximal abelian subsets of a unitary basis U for the operator algebra B(H) of a Hilbert space H of finite dimension d > 3 or, after choosing an orthonormal basis for H, for the *-algebra Md of complex matrices of order d > 3. Illustrations are given for the techniques. It is shown that the Schwinger basis U of unitary operators can give for d, a product of primes p and a, the ideal…
We present a novel method to perform quantum state tomography for many-particle systems which are particularly suitable for estimating states in lattice systems such as of ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. We show that the need for measuring a tomographically complete set of observables can be overcome by letting the state evolve under some suitably chosen random circuits followed by the measurement of a single observable. We generalize known results about the approximation of unitary 2-designs, i.e., certain classes of random unitary matrices, by random quantum circuits and connect our fi…
We consider a system of static spin qubits embedded in a one-dimensional spin coherent channel and develop a scheme to readout the state of one and two qubits separately. We use unpolarized flying qubits for this purpose that scatter off from the static qubits due to the Heisenberg exchange interaction. Analysing the transmission coefficient as a function of density matrix elements along with additional unitary gates we reconstruct the state of static qubits.
An original presentation of Categorical Quantum Physics, in the line of Abramsky and Coecke, tries to introduce only objects and assumptions that are clearly relevant to Physics and does not assume compact closure. Adjoint arrows, tensor products and biproducts are the ingredients of this presentation. Tensor products are defined, up to a unitary arrow, by a universal property related to transformations of composite systems, not by assuming a monoidal structure. Entangled states of a tensor product define mixed states on the components of the tensor product. Coproducts that fit the adjoint str…
Quantum state tomography (QST) for reconstructing pure states requires exponentially increasing resources and measurements with the number of qubits by using state-of-the-art quantum compressive sensing (CS) methods. In this article, QST reconstruction for any pure state composed of the superposition of $K$ different computational basis states of $n$ qubits in a specific measurement set-up, i.e., denoted as $K$-sparse, is achieved without any initial knowledge and with quantum polynomial-time complexity of resources based on the assumption of the existence of polynomial size quantum circuits f…
In this article, we introduce a framework for entanglement characterization by time-resolved single-photon counting with measurement operators defined in the time domain. For a quantum system with unitary dynamics, we generate time-continuous measurements by shifting from the Schrodinger picture to the Heisenberg representation. In particular, we discuss this approach in reference to photonic tomography. To make the measurement scheme realistic, we impose timing uncertainty on photon counts along with the Poisson noise. Then, the framework is tested numerically on quantum tomography of qubits.…
