Variational quantum algorithms are a promising hybrid framework for solving chemistry and physics problems with broad applicability to optimization as well. They are particularly well suited for noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) computers. In this paper, we describe the unitary block optimization scheme (UBOS) and apply it to two variational quantum algorithms: the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and variational time evolution. The goal of VQE is to optimize a classically intractable parameterized quantum wave function to target a physical state of a Hamiltonian or solve an optimization problem. UBOS is an alternative to other VQE optimization schemes with a number of advantages including fast convergence, less sensitivity to barren plateaus, the ability to tunnel through some local minima and no hyperparameters to tune. We additionally describe how UBOS applies to real and imaginary time-evolution (TUBOS).
The variational quantum eigensolver has been proposed as a low-depth quantum circuit that can be employed to examine strongly correlated systems on today's noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers. We examine details associated with the factorized form of the unitary coupled-cluster variant of this algorithm. We apply it to a simple strongly correlated condensed-matter system with nontrivial behavior---the four-site Hubbard model at half filling. This work show some of the subtle issues one needs to take into account when applying this algorithm in practice, especially to condensed-matter sy…
Monte Carlo sampling techniques have been proposed as a strategy to reduce the computational cost of contractions in tensor network approaches to solving many-body systems. Here we put forward a variational Monte Carlo approach for the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), which is a unitary tensor network. Two major adjustments are required compared to previous proposals with non-unitary tensor networks. First, instead of sampling over configurations of the original lattice, made of L sites, we sample over configurations of an effective lattice, which is made of just log(L) …
We propose an orbital optimized method for unitary coupled cluster theory (OO-UCC) within the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) framework for quantum computers. OO-UCC variationally determines the coupled cluster amplitudes and also molecular orbital coefficients. Owing to its fully variational nature, first-order properties are readily available. This feature allows the optimization of molecular structures in VQE without solving any additional equations. Furthermore, the method requires smaller active space and shallower quantum circuit than UCC to achieve the same accuracy. We present nu…
One of the main challenges in the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) framework is construction of the unitary transformation. The dimensionality of the space for unitary rotations of $N$ qubits is $4^N-1$, which makes the choice of a polynomial subset of generators exponentially difficult process. Moreover, due to non-commutativity of generators, the order in which they are used strongly affects results. Choosing the optimal order in a particular subset of generators requires testing the factorial number of combinations. We propose an approach based on the Lie algebra - Lie group connection…
We propose a modification of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm for electronic structure optimization using quantum computers, named non-unitary Variational Quantum Eigensolver (nu-VQE), in which a non-unitary operator is combined with the original system Hamiltonian leading to a new variational problem with a simplified wavefunction Ansatz. In the present work, we use, as non-unitary operator, the Jastrow factor, inspired from classical Quantum Monte Carlo techniques for simulation of strongly correlated electrons. The method is applied to prototypical molecular Hamiltonians for wh…
In this paper we discuss the utilization of Variational Quantum Solver (VQE) and recently introduced Generalized Unitary Coupled Cluster (GUCC) formalism for the diagonalization of downfolded/effective Hamiltonians in active spaces. In addition to effective Hamiltonians defined by the downfolding of a subset of virtual orbitals we also consider their form defined by freezing core orbitals, which enables us to deal with larger systems. We also consider various solvers to identify solutions of the GUCC equations. We use N$_2$, H$_2$O, and C$_2$H$_4$, and benchmark systems to illustrate the perfo…
We introduce a unified formulation of variational methods for simulating ground state properties of quantum many-body systems. The key feature is a novel variational method over quantum circuits via infinitesimal unitary transformations, inspired by flow equation methods. Variational classes are represented as efficiently contractible unitary networks, including the matrix-product states of density matrix renormalization, multiscale entanglement renormalization (MERA) states, weighted graph states, and quantum cellular automata. In particular, this provides a tool for varying over classes of s…

Optimization of unitary transformations in Variational Quantum Algorithms benefits highly from efficient evaluation of cost function gradients with respect to amplitudes of unitary generators. We propose several extensions of the parametric-shift-rule to formulating these gradients as linear combinations of expectation values for generators with general eigen-spectrum (i.e. with more than two eigenvalues). Our approaches are exact and do not use any auxiliary qubits, instead they rely on a generator eigen-spectrum analysis. Two main directions in the parametric-shift-rule extensions are 1) pol…

In this paper, we have developed a unitary variant of a double exponential coupled cluster theory, which is capable of mimicking the effects of connected excitations of arbitrarily high rank, using only rank-one and rank-two parametrization of the wavefunction ansatz. While its implementation in a classical computer necessitates the construction of an effective Hamiltonian which involves infinite number of terms with arbitrarily high many-body rank, the same can easily be implemented in the hybrid quantum-classical variational quantum eigensolver framework with a reasonably shallow quantum cir…
To obtain estimates of electronic energies, the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) technique performs separate measurements for multiple parts of the system Hamiltonian. Current quantum hardware is restricted to projective single-qubit measurements, and thus, only parts of the Hamiltonian which form mutually qubit-wise commuting groups can be measured simultaneously. The number of such groups in the electronic structure Hamiltonians grows as $N^4$, where $N$ is the number of qubits, and thus puts serious restrictions on the size of the systems that can be studied. Using a partitioning of th…
The contextual subspace variational quantum eigensolver (CS-VQE) is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm that approximates the ground-state energy of a given qubit Hamiltonian. It achieves this by separating the Hamiltonian into contextual and noncontextual parts. The ground-state energy is approximated by classically solving the noncontextual problem, followed by solving the contextual problem using VQE, constrained by the noncontextual solution. In general, computation of the contextual correction needs fewer qubits and measurements compared with solving the full Hamiltonian via traditional …
We explore how to build quantum circuits that compute the lowest energy state corresponding to a given Hamiltonian within a Symmetry subspace by explicitly encoding it into the circuit. We create an explicit unitary and a variationally trained unitary that maps any vector output by ansatz A(~α) from a defined subspace to a vector in the symmetry space. The parameters are trained varitionally to minimize the energy thus keeping the output within the labelled symmetry value. The method was tested for a spin XXZ hamiltonian using rotation and reflection symmetry and H2 hamiltonian within S_z = 0 …

Suppressing unwanted transitions out of the instantaneous ground state is a major challenge in unitary adiabatic quantum computation. A recent approach consists in building counterdiabatic potentials approximated using variational strategies. In this contribution, we extend this variational approach to Lindbladian dynamics, having as a goal the suppression of diabatic transitions between pairs of Jordan blocks in quantum annealing. We show that, surprisingly, unitary counterdiabatic ansätze are successful for dissipative dynamics as well, allowing for easier experimental implementations compar…
We introduce time-dependent variational Monte Carlo for continuous-space Bose gases. Our approach is based on the systematic expansion of the many-body wave-function in terms of multi-body correlations and is essentially exact up to adaptive truncation. The method is benchmarked by comparison to exact Bethe-ansatz or existing numerical results for the integrable Lieb-Liniger model. We first show that the many-body wave-function achieves high precision for ground-state properties, including energy and first-order as well as second-order correlation functions. Then, we study the out-of-equilibri…
Applications of quantum simulation algorithms to obtain electronic energies of molecules on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices require careful consideration of resources describing the complex electron correlation effects. In modeling second-quantized problems, the biggest challenge confronted is that the number of qubits scales linearly with the size of molecular basis. This poses a significant limitation on the size of the basis sets and the number of correlated electrons included in quantum simulations of chemical processes. To address this issue and to enable more realistic si…
One of the challenges in quantum computing is the synthesis of unitary operators into quantum circuits with polylogarithmic gate complexity. Exact synthesis of generic unitaries requires an exponential number of gates in general. We propose a novel approximate quantum circuit synthesis technique by relaxing the unitary constraints and interchanging them for ancilla qubits via block-encodings. This approach combines smaller block-encodings, which are easier to synthesize, into quantum circuits for larger operators. Due to the use of block-encodings, our technique is not limited to unitary opera…
We propose a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm to simulate the non-equilibrium steady state of an open quantum many-body system, named the dissipative-system Variational Quantum Eigensolver (dVQE). To employ the variational optimization technique for a unitary quantum circuit, we map a mixed state into a pure state with a doubled number of qubits and design the unitary quantum circuit to fulfill the requirements for a density matrix. This allows us to define a cost function that consists of the time evolution generator of the quantum master equation. Evaluation of physical observables is, in …

Variational quantum algorithms are promising applications of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. These algorithms consist of a number of separate prepare-and-measure experiments that estimate terms in a Hamiltonian. The number of terms can become overwhelmingly large for problems at the scale of NISQ hardware that may soon be available. We approach this problem from the perspective of contextuality, and use unitary partitioning (developed independently by Izmaylov et al. [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 16, 190 (2020)]) to define variational quantum eigensolver procedures in which addit…
Extending our previous work on time optimal quantum state evolution, we formulate a variational principle for the time optimal unitary operation, which has direct relevance to quantum computation. We demonstrate our method with three examples, i.e. the swap of qubits, the quantum Fourier transform and the entangler gate, by choosing a two-qubit anisotropic Heisenberg model.

We discuss the variational optimization of a unitary tensor-network circuit with different network structures. The ansatz is performed based on a generalization of well-developed multi-scale entanglement renormalization algorithm and also the conjugate-gradient method with an effective line search. We present the benchmarking calculations for different network structures by studying the Heisenberg model in a strongly disordered magnetic field and a tensor-network $QR$-decomposition.
The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, designed to calculate the energy of molecular ground states on near-term quantum computers, requires specification of symmetries that describe the system, e.g. spin state and number of electrons. This opens the possibility of using VQE to obtain excited states as the lowest energy solutions of a given set of symmetries. In this paper, the performances of various unitary coupled cluster (UCC) ansätze applied to VQE calculations on excited states are investigated, using quantum circuits designed to represent single reference and multireference…
Quantum process tomography is an experimental technique to fully characterize an unknown quantum process. Standard quantum process tomography suffers from exponentially scaling of the number of measurements with the increasing system size. In this work, we put forward a quantum machine learning algorithm which approximately encodes the unknown unitary quantum process into a relatively shallow depth parametric quantum circuit. We demonstrate our method by reconstructing the unitary quantum processes resulting from the quantum Hamiltonian evolution and random quantum circuits up to $8$ qubits. R…
In this paper, we present a variational treatment of the linear dependence for a non-orthogonal time-dependent basis set in solving the Schrödinger equation. The method is based on: i) the definition of a linearly independent working space, and ii) a variational construction of the propagator over finite time-steps. The second point allows the method to properly account for changes in the dimensionality of the working space along the time evolution. In particular, the time evolution is represented by a semi-unitary transformation. Tests are done on a quartic double-well potential with Gaussian…
A key goal of digital quantum computing is the simulation of fermionic systems such as molecules or the Hubbard model. Unfortunately, for present and near-future quantum computers the use of quantum error correction schemes is still out of reach. Hence, the finite error rate limits the use of quantum computers to algorithms with a low number of gates. The variational Hamiltonian ansatz (VHA) has been shown to produce the ground state in good approximation in a manageable number of steps. Here we study explicitly the effect of gate errors on its performance. The VHA is inspired by the adiabatic…

Barren plateaus are a notorious problem in the optimization of variational quantum algorithms and pose a critical obstacle in the quest for more efficient quantum machine learning algorithms. Many potential reasons for barren plateaus have been identified but few solutions have been proposed to avoid them in practice. Existing solutions are mainly focused on the initialization of unitary gate parameters without taking into account the changes induced by input data. In this paper, we propose an alternative strategy which initializes the parameters of a unitary gate by drawing from a beta distri…
