In this paper we discuss the utilization of Variational Quantum Solver (VQE) and recently introduced Generalized Unitary Coupled Cluster (GUCC) formalism for the diagonalization of downfolded/effective Hamiltonians in active spaces. In addition to effective Hamiltonians defined by the downfolding of a subset of virtual orbitals we also consider their form defined by freezing core orbitals, which enables us to deal with larger systems. We also consider various solvers to identify solutions of the GUCC equations. We use N$_2$, H$_2$O, and C$_2$H$_4$, and benchmark systems to illustrate the performance of the combined framework.
In this work, we propose a quantum unitary downfolding formalism based on the driven similarity renormalization group (QDSRG) that may be combined with quantum algorithms for both noisy and fault-tolerant hardware. The QDSRG is a classical polynomially-scaling downfolding method that avoids the evaluation of costly three- and higher-body reduced density matrices while retaining the accuracy of classical multireference many-body theories. We calibrate and test the QDSRG on several challenging chemical problems and propose a strategy for avoiding classical exponential-scaling steps in the QDSRG …
The optimization of circuit parameters of variational quantum algorithms such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) or the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) is a key challenge for the practical deployment of near-term quantum computing algorithms. Here, we develop a hybrid quantum/classical optimization procedure inspired by the Jacobi diagonalization algorithm for classical eigendecomposition, and combined with Anderson acceleration. In the first stage, analytical tomography fittings are performed for a local cluster of circuit parameters via sampling of the observable …
Extracting eigenvalues and eigenvectors of exponentially large matrices will be an important application of near-term quantum computers. The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) treats the case when the matrix is a Hamiltonian. Here, we address the case when the matrix is a density matrix $ρ$. We introduce the Variational Quantum State Eigensolver (VQSE), which is analogous to VQE in that it variationally learns the largest eigenvalues of $ρ$ as well as a gate sequence $V$ that prepares the corresponding eigenvectors. VQSE exploits the connection between diagonalization and majorization to de…

We develop a quantum filter diagonalization method (QFD) that lies somewhere between the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the phase estimation algorithm (PEA) in terms of required quantum circuit resources and conceptual simplicity. QFD uses a set of of time-propagated guess states as a variational basis for approximate diagonalization of a sparse Pauli Hamiltonian. The variational coefficients of the basis functions are determined by the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure by classically solving a generalized eigenvalue problem in the space of time-propagated guess states. The matrix elements of…
Quantum chemistry is regarded to be one of the first disciplines that will be revolutionized by quantum computing. Although universal quantum computers of practical scale may be years away, various approaches are currently being pursued to solve quantum chemistry problems on near-term gate-based quantum computers and quantum annealers by developing the appropriate algorithm and software base. This work implements the general Quantum Annealer Eigensolver (QAE) algorithm to solve the molecular electronic Hamiltonian eigenvalue-eigenvector problem on a D-Wave 2000Q quantum annealer. The approach …
We demonstrate the simulation of a noncollinear molecule, e.g. H2O molecule using Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) with high chemical accuracy. The 2D and 3D potential energy surface (PES) were reported. Taking advantage of the potential speedup in Qiskit runtime program, the optimal initial parameters for the variational quantum circuits were obtained after several consecutive iterations, thus resulting in accurate prediction of water's PES matching result obtained from exact diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian.

We propose a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm of the power method, here dubbed as quantum power method, to evaluate $\hat{\cal H}^n |ψ\rangle$ with quantum computers, where $n$ is a nonnegative integer, $\hat{\cal H}$ is a time-independent Hamiltonian of interest, and $|ψ\rangle$ is a quantum state. We show that the number of gates required for approximating $\hat{\cal H}^n$ scales linearly in the power and the number of qubits, making it a promising application for near term quantum computers. Using numerical simulation, we show that the power method can control systematic errors in approxi…
One of the requirements imposed on the realistic quantum computers is to provide computation results which can be repeated and reproduced. In the situation when one needs to repeat the quantum computation procedure several times, it is crucial that the copies of the quantum devices are similar in the sense of the produced results. In this work, we describe a simple procedure based on variational quantum eigensolver which can be utilized to compare quantum devices. The procedure is developed by combining Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism with the variational hybrid quantum-classical procedure for m…
The search for new computational tasks of quantum chemistry that can be performed on current quantum computers is important for the development of quantum computing and quantum chemistry. Although calculations of chemical reactions have a wide range of applications in quantum chemical calculations, a quantum algorithm for obtaining activation energy $E_a$, which determines the rate of chemical reactions, has not been performed. In this study, we propose a quantum algorithm for the chemical reaction path optimization to obtain $E_a$. In our algorithm, quantum circuits can be used not only for t…
The Hamiltonian operator plays a central role in quantum theory being a generator of unitary quantum dynamics. Its expectation value describes the energy of a quantum system. Typically being a non-unitary operator, the action of the Hamiltonian is either encoded using complex ancilla-based circuits, or implemented effectively as a sum of Pauli string terms. Here, we show how to approximate the Hamiltonian operator as a sum of propagators using a differential representation. The proposed approach, named Hamiltonian operator approximation (HOA), is designed to benefit analog quantum simulators, …
