Entangled states represent correlations between two separate systems that are too precise to be represented by products of local quantum states. We show that this limit of precision for the local quantum states of a pair of N-level systems can be defined by an appropriate class of uncertainty relations. The violation of such local uncertainty relations may be used as an experimental test of entanglement generation.
The entanglement swapping protocol is analyzed in a relativistic setting, where shortly after the entanglement swapping is performed, a Bell violation measurement is performed. From an observer in the laboratory frame, a Bell violation is observed due to entanglement swapping taking place, but in a moving frame the order of the measurements is reversed, and a Bell violation is observed even though no entanglement is present. Although the measurement results are identical, the wavefunctions for the two frames are different--- one is entangled and the other is not. Furthermore, for boosts in a p…
By calculating entanglement measures and quantum violation of Bell-type inequality, we reveal the relationship between entanglement measure and the amount of quantum violation for a family of four-qubit entangled states. It has been demonstrated that the Bell-type inequality is completely violated by these four-qubit entangled states. The plot of entanglement measure as a function of the expectation value of Bell operator shows that entanglement measure first decreases and then increases smoothly with increasing quantum violation.
We consider violation of CHSH inequality for states before and after entanglement swapping. We present a pair of initial states which do not violate CHSH inequality however the final state violates CHSH inequality for some results of Bell measurements performed in order to swap entanglement.
Bell-inequality violation and entanglement, measured by Wootters' concurrence and negativity, of two qubits initially in Werner or Werner-like states coupled to thermal reservoirs are analyzed within the master equation approach. It is shown how this simple decoherence process leads to generation of states manifesting the relativity of two-qubit entanglement measures.
In a recent interesting article Chris Nagele, Ebubechukwu O. IloOkeke, Peter P. Rohde, Jonathan P. Dowling, and Tim Byrnes discuss an entanglement swapping experiment using a setup where it is possible to switch the time ordering of measurements. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the very same idea was introduced in two previous papers, and briefly address some important points related to the subject.
We discuss the relations between the violation of the CHSH Bell inequality for systems of two qubits on the one side and entanglement of formation, local filtering operations, and the entropy and purity on the other. We calculate the extremal Bell violations for a given amount of entanglement of formation and characterize the respective states, which turn out to have extremal properties also with respect to the entropy, purity and several entanglement monotones. The optimal local filtering operations leading to the maximal Bell violation for a given state are provided and the special role of t…
Recently Munro, Nemoto and White (The Bell Inequality: A measure of Entanglement?, quant-ph/0102119) tried to indicate that the reason behind a state rho having higher amount of entanglement (as quantified by the entanglement of formation) than a state eta, but producing the same amount of Bell-violation, is due to the fact that the amount of mixedness (as quantified by the linearised entropy) in rho is higher than that in eta. We counter their argument with examples. We extend these considerations to the von Neumann entropy. Our results suggest that the reason as to why equal amount of Bell-v…
Bell's inequality violation (BIQV) for correlations of polarization is studied for a {\it product} state of two two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) states. The violation allowed is shown to attain its maximal limit for all values of the squeezing parameter, $ζ$. We show via an explicit example that a state whose entanglement is not maximal allow maximal BIQV. The Wigner function of the state is non negative and the average value of either polarization is nil.
Entanglement between two separate systems is a necessary resource to violate a Bell inequality in a test of local realism. We demonstrate that to overcome the Bell bound, this correlation must be accompanied by the entanglement between the constituent particles. This happens whenever a super-selection rule imposes a constraint on feasible local operations. As we show in an example, the necessary particle entanglement might solely result from their indistinguishability. Our result reveals a fundamental relation between the non-locality and the particle entanglement.
Considering the dipole-dipole coupling intensity between two atoms and the field in the Fock state, the entanglement dynamics between two atoms that are initially entangled in the system of two two-level atoms coupled to a single mode cavity in the presence of phase decoherence has been investigated. The two-atom entanglement appears with periodicity without considering phase decoherence, however, the phase decoherence causes the decay of entanglement between two atoms, with the increasing of the phase decoherence coefficient, the entanglement will quickly become a constant value, which is aff…
The usual entanglement swapping protocol can entangle two particles that never interact. Here we demonstrate an all-versus-nothing violation of local realism for a partial entanglement swapping process. A Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-type inequality for two particles entangled by entanglement swapping is proposed for a practical experiment and can be violated quantum mechanically up to 4 beyond Cirel'son's bound 2sqr(2). Our result uncovers the intriguing nonlocal character of entanglement swapping and may lead to a conclusive (loophole-free) test of local realism versus quantum mechanics. The e…
We study the quantum entanglement between two coupled cavities, in which one is initially prepared in a mesoscopic superposition state and the other is in the vacuum in dissipative environment and show how the entanglement between two cavities can arise in the dissipative environment. The dynamic behavior of the nonlocality for the system is also investigated.
We have investigated the polarization entanglement between photon pairs generated from a biexciton in a CuCl single crystal via resonant hyper parametric scattering. The pulses of a high repetition pump are seen to provide improved statistical accuracy and the ability to test Bell's inequality. Our results clearly violate the inequality and thus manifest the quantum entanglement and nonlocality of the photon pairs. We also analyzed the quantum state of our photon pairs using quantum state tomography.
Entanglement is a well-known resource in quantum information, in particular it can be exploited for quantum key distribution (QKD). In this paper we define a two-way QKD scheme employing GHZ-type states of three qubits obtaining an extension of the standard E91 protocol with a significant increasing of the number of shared bits. Eavesdropping attacks can be detected measuring violation of the CHSH inequality and the secret key rate can be estimated in a device-independent scenario.
Entanglement is an invaluable resource for fundamental tests of physics and the implementation of quantum information protocols such as device-independent secure communications. In particular, time-bin entanglement is widely exploited to reach these purposes both in free-space and optical fiber propagation, due to the robustness and simplicity of its implementation. However, all existing realizations of time-bin entanglement suffer from an intrinsic postselection loophole, which undermines their usefulness. Here, we report the first experimental violation of Bell's inequality with "genuine" ti…
We propose a new method for detecting entanglement of two qubits and discuss its relation with the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality. Without the need for full quantum tomography for the density matrix we can experimentally detect the entanglement by measuring less than 9 local observables for any given state. We show that this test is stronger than the CHSH-Bell inequality and also gives an estimation for the degree of entanglement. If prior knowledge is available we can further greatly reduce the number of required local observables. The test is convenient and feasible with p…
We propose a Bell inequality for high-dimensional bipartite systems obtained by binning local measurement outcomes and show that it is tight. We find a binning method for even d-dimensional measurement outcomes for which this Bell inequality is maximally violated by maximally entangled states. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Bell inequality is applicable to continuous variable systems and yields strong violations for two-mode squeezed states.
It is well known that the violation of Bell's inequality in the form given by Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt (CHSH) in two-qubit systems requires entanglement, but not vice versa, i.e., there are entangled states which do not violate the CHSH inequality. Here we compare some standard entanglement measures with violations of the CHSH inequality (as given by the Horodecki measure) for two-qubit states generated by Monte Carlo simulations. We describe states that have extremal entanglement according to the negativity, concurrence, and relative entropy of entanglement for a given value of the C…
It is well-known that the violation of a local uncertainty relation can be used as an indicator for the presence of entanglement. Unfortunately, the practical use of these non-linear witnesses has been limited to few special cases in the past. However, new methods for computing uncertainty bounds became available. Here we report on an experimental implementation of uncertainty-based entanglement witnesses, benchmarked in a regime dominated by strong local noise. We combine the new computational method with a local noise tomography in order to design noise-adapted entanglement witnesses. This p…
Mermin's observation [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 65}, 1838 (1990)] that the magnitude of the violation of local realism, defined as the ratio between the quantum prediction and the classical bound, can grow exponentially with the size of the system is demonstrated using two-photon hyper-entangled states entangled in polarization and path degrees of freedom, and local measurements of polarization and path simultaneously.
We review some counterintuitive properties of standard measures describing quantum entanglement and violation of Bell's inequality (often referred to as "nonlocality") in two-qubit systems. By comparing the nonlocality, negativity, concurrence, and relative entropy of entanglement, we show: (i) ambiguity in ordering states with the entanglement measures, (ii) ambiguity of robustness of entanglement in lossy systems and (iii) existence of two-qubit mixed states more entangled than pure states having the same negativity or nonlocality. To support our conclusions, we performed a Monte Carlo simul…
We develop and exploit a source of two-photon four-dimensional entanglement to report the first two-particle all-versus-nothing test of local realism with a linear optics setup, but without resorting to a non-contextuality ssumption. Our experimental results are in well agreement with quantum mechanics while in extreme contradiction with local realism. Potential applications of our experiment are briefly discussed.
Two important results of quantum physics are the \textit{no-cloning} theorem and the \textit{monogamy of entanglement}. The former forbids the creation of an independent and identical copy of an arbitrary unknown quantum state and the latter restricts the shareability of quantum entanglement among multiple quantum systems. For distinguishable particles, one of these results imply the other. In this Letter, we show that in qubit systems with indistinguishable particles (where each particle cannot be addressed individually), a maximum violation of the monogamy of entanglement is possible by the …
We show that bipartite entanglements involving non-orthogonal states are {\it necessarily nonmaximally} entangled, however {\it small} the non-orthogonality may be. How the deviation from maximal entanglement is related to nonorthogonality is quantified by using two independent measures of entanglement corresponding to the violation of Bell's inequality and the entropy measure respectively. This result is true even if one of the subsystems has orthogonal states. An application of this is that a maximal violation of Bell's inequality in entangled neutral kaons is not possible in the presence of…
It is one of the most remarkable features of quantum physics that measurements on spatially separated systems cannot always be described by a locally causal theory. In such a theory, the outcomes of local measurements are determined in advance solely by some unknown (or hidden) variables and the choice of local measurements. Correlations that are allowed within the framework of a locally causal theory are termed classical. Typically, the fact that quantum mechanics does not always result in classical correlations is revealed by the violation of Bell inequalities, which are constraints that hav…
We address the question as to whether an entangled state that satisfies local realism will give a violation of the same, after entanglement swapping in a suitable scenario. We consider such possibility as a kind of superadditivity in nonclassicality. Importantly, it will indicate that checking for violation of local realism, in the state obtained after entanglement swapping, can be a method for detecting entanglement in the input state of the swapping procedure. We investigate various entanglement swapping schemes, which involve mixed initial states. The strength of violation of local realism …
Violation of a Bell-like inequality for a spin-energy entangled neutron state has been confirmed in a polarimetric experiment. The proposed inequality, in Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) formalism, relies on correlations between the spin and energy degree of freedom in a single-neutron system. The entangled states are generated utilizing a suitable combination of two radio-frequency fields in a neutron polarimeter setup. The correlation function S is determined to be 2.333+/-0.005, which violates the Bell-like CHSH inequality by more than 66 standard deviations.
Theoretical considerations of Bell-inequality experiments usually assume identically prepared and independent pairs of particles. Here we consider pairs that exhibit both intra- and inter-pair entanglement. The pairs are taken from a large many-body system where all the pairs are generally entangled with each other. Using an explicit example based on single mode entanglement and an ancillary Bose-Einstein condensate, we show that the Bell-inequality violation in such systems can display statistical properties that are remarkably different from those obtained using identically prepared, indepen…
We report the generation of polarization-entangled photons, using a quantum dot single photon source, linear optics and photodetectors. Two photons created independently are observed to violate Bell's inequality. The density matrix describing the polarization state of the postselected photon pairs is also reconstructed, and agrees well with a simple model predicting the quality of entanglement from the known parameters of the single photon source. Our scheme provides a method to generate no more than one entangled photon pair per cycle, a feature useful to enhance quantum cryptography protocol…
Entanglement of high-dimensional and multipartite quantum systems offer promising perspectives in quantum information processing. However, the characterization and measure of such kind of entanglement is of great challenge. Here we consider the overlaps between the maximal quantum mean values and the classical bound of the CHSH inequalities for pairwise-qubit states in two-dimensional subspaces. We show that the concurrence of a pure state in any high-dimensional multipartite system can be equivalently represented by these overlaps. Here we consider the projections of an arbitrary high-dimensi…
It is shown that entanglement, which is a quantum correlation property of at least two subsystems, is imprinted in the mode structure of a single photon. The photon, which is emitted by two coupled cavities, carries the information on the concurrence of the two intracavity fields. This can be useful for recording the entanglement dynamics of two cavity fields and for entanglement transfer.
We study a general theory on the interference of two-photon wavepacket in a beam splitter. We find that the symmetry of two-photon spectrum plays an important role in the manners of interference. We distinguish the coalescence and anti-coalescence interferences, and prove that the anti-coalescence interference is the signature of photon entanglement.
We analyze the effect of local decoherence of two qubits on their entanglement and the Bell inequality violation. Decoherence is described by Kraus operators, which take into account dephasing and energy relaxation at an arbitrary temperature. We show that in the experiments with superconducting phase qubits the survival time for entanglement should be much longer than for the Bell inequality violation.
Entanglement is a critical resource used in many current quantum information schemes. As such entanglement has been extensively studied in two qubit systems and its entanglement nature has been exhibited by violations of the Bell inequality. Can the amount of violation of the Bell inequality be used to quantify the degree of entanglement. What do Bell inequalities indicate about the nature of entanglement?
Violations of a Bell inequality are reported for an experiment where one of two entangled qubits is stored in a collective atomic memory for a user-defined time delay. The atomic qubit is found to preserve the violation of a Bell inequality for storage times up to 21 microseconds, 700 times longer than the duration of the excitation pulse that creates the entanglement. To address the question of the security of entanglement-based cryptography implemented with this system, an investigation of the Bell violation as a function of the cross-correlation between the generated nonclassical fields is …
We consider the problem of determining the presence of genuine multipartite entanglement through the violation of Mermin's Bell-type inequality (MI). Though the violation of MI cannot certify the presence of genuine nonlocality, but can certify genuine tripartite entanglement whenever the violation is strictly greater than $2\sqrt{2}$. Here we show that MI suffices as genuine entanglement witness even when its value is $2\sqrt{2}$ if at least two of the local marginal distributions are not completely random provided the local Hilbert space dimension of at least one of the sub-systems is two. T…
Bipartite quantum entanglement for qutrits and higher-dimensional objects is considered. We analyze the possibility of violation of monogamy inequality, introduced by Coffman, Kundu, and Wootters, for some systems composed of such objects. An explicit counterexample with a three-qutrit totally antisymmetric state is presented. Since three-tangle has been confirmed to be a natural measure of entanglement for qubit systems, our result shows that the three-tangle is no longer a legitimate measure of entanglement for states with three qutrits or higher dimensional objects.
In the present work we show that a special family of materials, the metal carboxylates, may have entangled states up to very high temperatures. From magnetic susceptibility measurements, we have estimated the critical temperature below which entanglement exists in the cooper carboxylate \{Cu$_2$(O$_2$CH)$_4$\}\{Cu(O$_2$CH)$_2$(2-methylpyridine)$_2$\}, and we have found this to be above room temperature ($T_e \sim 630$ K). Furthermore, the results show that the system remains maximally entangled until close to $\sim 100$ K and the Bell's inequality is violated up to nearly room temperature ($\s…

Non-classical probability is the underlying feature of quantum mechanics. The emergence of Bell-CHSH non-locality for bipartite systems and linear entanglement inequalities for two-qubit systems has been shown in Adhikary et al. 2020 [Eur. Phys. J. D 74, 68 (2020)], purely as violations of classical probability rules. In this paper, we improve upon that work by showing that violation of any nonlocality inequality implies violation of classical probability rules, manifested through negative probabilities, without recourse to any underlying theory. Moving on to entanglement, we employ parent pse…
In quant-ph/0201134 Jennewein et al. report experiments demonstrating entanglement swapping under various conditions. In one instance, they claim to have exhibited Bell inequality violations by a pair of photons prior to performing any entangling operations on the pair. However, the Bell inequality violation results in this case from post-selection of the data, not from quantum non-locality.
We explore the dynamics of entanglement in classically chaotic systems by considering a multiqubit system that behaves collectively as a spin system obeying the dynamics of the quantum kicked top. In the classical limit, the kicked top exhibits both regular and chaotic dynamics depending on the strength of the chaoticity parameter $κ$ in the Hamiltonian. We show that the entanglement of the multiqubit system, considered for both bipartite and pairwise entanglement, yields a signature of quantum chaos. Whereas bipartite entanglement is enhanced in the chaotic region, pairwise entanglement is su…
Theory of bipartite entanglement shares profound similarities with thermodynamics. In this letter we extend this connection to multipartite quantum systems where entanglement appears in different forms with genuine entanglement being the most exotic one. We propose thermodynamic quantities that capture signature of genuineness in multipartite entangled states. Instead of entropy, these quantities are defined in terms of energy -- particularly the difference between global and local extractable works (ergotropies) that can be stored in quantum batteries. Some of these quantities suffice as fait…
Entanglement is often verified by a violation of an inequality like a Bell inequality or an entanglement witness. Considerable effort has been devoted to the optimization of such inequalities in order to obtain a high violation. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that such an optimization does not necessarily lead to a better entanglement test, if the statistical error is taken into account. Theoretically, we show for different error models that reducing the violation of an inequality can improve the significance. Experimentally, we observe this phenomenon in a four-photon experim…
We discuss orbital entanglement in mesoscopic conductors, focusing on the effect of dephasing. The entanglement is detected via violation of a Bell Inequality formulated in terms of zero-frequency current correlations. Following closely the recent work by Samuelsson, Sukhorukov and Buttiker, we investigate how the dephasing affects the possibility to violate the Bell Inequality and how system parameters can be adjusted for optimal violation.
We demonstrate a scheme to generate noncoherent and coherent correlations, i.e., a tunable degree of entanglement, between degrees of freedom of a single photon. Its nature is analogous to the tuning of the purity (first-order coherence) of a single photon forming part of a two-photon state by tailoring the correlations between the paired photons. Therefore, well-known tools such as the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell-like inequality can also be used to characterize entanglement between degrees of freedom. More specifically, CHSH inequality tests are performed, making use of the polariz…
We explore connections between an operator's matrix element distribution and its entanglement generation. Operators with matrix element distributions similar to those of random matrices generate states of high multi-partite entanglement. This occurs even when other statistical properties of the operators do not conincide with random matrices. Similarly, operators with some statistical properties of random matrices may not exhibit random matrix element distributions and will not produce states with high levels of multi-partite entanglement. Finally, we show that operators with similar matrix el…
Based on the assumption that the receiver Bob can apply any unitary transformation, Horodecki {\it et al.} [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 222}, 21 (1996)] proved that any mixed two spin-1/2 state which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality is useful for teleportation. Here, we further show that any X state which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality can also be used for nonclassical teleportation even if Bob can only perform the identity or the Pauli rotation operations. Moreover, we showed that the maximal difference between the two average fidelities achievable via Bob's arbitrary transformations and via the s…
For two qubits belonging to Alice and Bob, we derive an approach to setup the bound of Bell operator in the condition that Alice and Bob continue to perform local vertical measurements. For pure states we find that if the entanglement of the two qubits is less than 0.2644 (measured with von Neumann entropy) the violation of the Bell inequality will never be realized, and only when the entanglement is equal to 1 the maximal violation ($2\sqrt{2}$) can occur. For specific form of mixed states, we prove that the bound of the Bell inequality depends on the concurrence. Only when the concurrence is…
Two quantum states of two half-charge optical vortexes with relative azimuthal angle π are orthogonal, by which two half-charge spiral phase plates with intersection angle π can be used to demonstrate a parabolic coincident fringe in the Bell inequality experiment with high-dimensional two-photon orbital angular momentum entanglement and to thereby obtain a strong Bell parameter of 3.2. I theoretically demonstrate various orthogonal relations between two quantum states, each of which is a state with a rotational symmetry superposition made up of n fractional orbital angular momentum states, wh…
We show how a minimization principle of quantum entanglement between the oscillating flavors of a neutrino leads to a unique prediction for the CP-violation phase in the neutrino sector without assuming extra symmetries in the Standard Model. We find a theoretical prediction consistent with either no CP-violation or a very small presence of it.
The establishment of nonlocal correlations, obtained through the violation of a Bell inequality, is not only important from a fundamental point of view, but constitutes the basis for device-independent quantum information technologies. Although several nonlocality tests have been performed so far, all of them suffered from either the locality or the detection loopholes. Recent studies have suggested that the use of atom-photon entanglement can lead to Bell inequality violations with moderate transmission and detection efficiencies. In this paper we propose an experimental setup realizing a sim…
A broadcasting multiple blind signature scheme based on quantum GHZ entanglement has been presented recently by Tian et al. It is said that the scheme's unconditional security is guaranteed by adopting quantum key preparation, quantum encryption algorithm and quantum entanglement. In this paper, we prove that each signatory can get the signed message just by an intercept-resend attack. Then, we show there still exists some participant attacks and external attacks. Specifically, we verify the message sender Alice can impersonate each signatory to sign the message at will, and so is the signatur…
We demonstrate the emergence and dynamics of intra-particle entanglement in massless Dirac fermions. This entanglement, generated by spin-orbit coupling, arises between the spin and sublattice pseudospin of electrons in graphene. The entanglement is a complex dynamic quantity but is generally large, independent of the initial state. Its time dependence implies a dynamical violation of a Bell inequality, while its magnitude indicates that large intra-particle entanglement is a general feature of graphene on a substrate. These features are also expected to impact entanglement between pairs of pa…
Entanglement is one of the key feature of quantum world and any entanglement measure must satisfy some basic laws. Most important of them is the invariance of entanglement under local unitary operations. We show that this is no longer true with local ${\cal {PT}}$ symmetric unitary operations. If two parties share a maximally entangled state, then under local ${\cal {PT}}$ symmetric unitary evolution the entropy of entanglement for pure bipartite states does not remain invariant. Furthermore, we show that if one of the party has access to ${\cal {PT}}$-symmetric quantum world, then a maximally…
