We develop and exploit a source of two-photon four-dimensional entanglement to report the first two-particle all-versus-nothing test of local realism with a linear optics setup, but without resorting to a non-contextuality ssumption. Our experimental results are in well agreement with quantum mechanics while in extreme contradiction with local realism. Potential applications of our experiment are briefly discussed.
We show all-versus-nothing proofs of Bell's theorem in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model, which is one of the most important exactly solvable models in the field of condensed matter physics. Since this model can be simulated with nuclear magnetic resonance, our work might lead to a fresh approach to experimental test of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger contradiction between local realism and quantum mechanics.
We introduce a two-observer all-versus-nothing proof of Bell's theorem which reduces the number of required quantum predictions from 9 [A. Cabello, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 010403 (2001); Z.-B. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 160408 (2003)] to 4, provides a greater amount of evidence against local realism, reduces the detection efficiency requirements for a conclusive experimental test of Bell's theorem, and leads to a Bell's inequality which resembles Mermin's inequality for three observers [N. D. Mermin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 1838 (1990)] but requires only two observers.
The usual entanglement swapping protocol can entangle two particles that never interact. Here we demonstrate an all-versus-nothing violation of local realism for a partial entanglement swapping process. A Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-type inequality for two particles entangled by entanglement swapping is proposed for a practical experiment and can be violated quantum mechanically up to 4 beyond Cirel'son's bound 2sqr(2). We introduce two two-player quantum pseudo-telepathy games based on two recently proposed all-versus-nothing (AVN) proofs of Bell's theorem [A. Cabello, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 210401 (2005); Phys. Rev. A 72, 050101(R) (2005)]. These games prove that Broadbent and Methot's claim that these AVN proofs do not rule out local-hidden-variable theories in which it is possible to exchange unlimited information inside the same light-cone (quant-ph/0511047) is incorrect.
We introduce an all-versus-nothing proof of impossibility of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen's local elements of reality for two photons entangled both in polarization and path degrees of freedom, which leads to a Bell's inequality where the classical bound is 8 and the quantum prediction is 16. A simple estimation of the detection efficiency required to close the detection loophole using this proof gives eta > 0.69. This efficiency is lower than that required for previous proposals.
We investigate the nonlocal property of the fractional statistics in Kitaev's toric code model. To this end, we construct the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox which builds a direct conflict between the statistics and local realism. It turns out that the fractional statistics in the model is purely a quantum effect and independent of any classical theory.We also discuss a feasible experimental scheme using anyonic interferometry to test this contradiction.
I purport to show why old and new claims on the role of counterfactual reasoning for the EPR argument and the Bell theorem are unjustified: once the logical relation between locality and counterfactual reasoning is clarified, the use of the latter does no harm and the nonlocality result can well follow from the EPR premises. To show why, I critically review (i) incompleteness arguments that Einstein developed before the EPR paper, and (ii) more recent claims that equate the use of counterfactual reasoning with the assumption of a strong form of realism.
It is shown that the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger theorem can be generalized to the case with only two entangled particles. The reasoning makes use of two photons which are maximally entangled both in polarization and in spatial degrees of freedom. In contrast to Cabello's argument of "all versus nothing" nonlocality with four photons [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 010403 (2001)], our proposal to test the theorem can be implemented with linear optics and thus is well within the reach of current experimental technology.
Hardy's is one of the simplest arguments concerning non-locality. Recently Chen et. al. have proposed a more generalized Hardy-like argument and have shown that the probability of success increases with local system's dimension. Here we study the same in a minimally constrained theory, namely the generalized no-signaling theory(GNST). We find that not only the probability of success of this argument increases with local system dimension in GNST, it also takes a very simple functional form.
Recently, a kind of deterministic all-versus-nothing proof of Bell nonlocality induced from the qubit non-stabilizer state was proposed, breaking the tradition that deterministic all-versus-nothing proofs are always derived from stabilizer states. We report the experimental realization and the characterization of polarization and momentum hyperentangled two photon states, generated by a new parametric source of correlated photon pairs. By adoption of these states an "all versus nothing" test of quantum mechanics was performed. All-versus-nothing (AVN) proofs show the conflict between Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen's elements of reality and the perfect correlations of some quantum states. Given an n-qubit state distributed between m parties, we provide a method with which to decide whether this distribution allows an m-partite AVN proof specific for this state using only single-qubit measurements. We apply this method to some recently obtained n-qubit m-particle states. In addition, we provide all inequivalent AVN proofs with less than nine qubits and a minimum number of parties.
If we distribute n qubits between two parties, which quantum pure states and distributions of qubits would allow all-versus-nothing (or Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-like) proofs of Bell's theorem using only single-qubit measurements? We show a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of these proofs for any number of qubits, and provide all distinct proofs up to n=7 qubits. Remarkably, there is only one distribution of a state of n=4 qubits, and six distributions, each for a different state of n=6 qubits, which allow these proofs.
A recent proof of Bell's theorem without inequalities [A. Cabello, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 1911 (2001)] is formulated as a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-like proof involving just two observers. On one hand, this new approach allows us to derive an experimentally testable Bell inequality which is violated by quantum mechanics. On the other hand, it leads to a new state-independent proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem and provides a wider perspective on the relations between the major proofs of no-hidden-variables.
In comparison with entanglement and Bell nonlocality, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a newly emerged research topic and in its incipient stage. I point out critical errors in the paper "Bell's Theorem Versus Local Realism in a Quaternionic Model of Physical Space" by J. Christian, published in IEEE Access. Christian's paper in fact contains several conflicting models. None of them form counterexamples to Bell's theorem. Most of Christian's paper is devoted to a model based on the detection loophole due to Pearle (1970).

We consider the task of certification of genuine entanglement of tripartite states. For this purpose, we first present an "all-versus-nothing" proof of genuine tripartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering by demonstrating the non-existence of a hybrid local hidden state (LHS) model in the tripartite network as a motivation to our main result. We present a general formulation of All-versus-Nothing arguments, and a complete characterisation of all such arguments which arise from stabiliser states. In the context of EPR-Bohm type experiments and spin detections confined to spacelike hypersurfaces, a local, deterministic and realistic model within a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime with a constant spatial curvature (S^3) is presented that describes simultaneous measurements of the spins of two fermions emerging in a singlet state from the decay of a spinless boson. Recently, a number of two-participant all-versus-nothing Bell experiments have been proposed. Here, we give local realistic explanations for these experiments. More precisely, we examine the scenario where a participant swaps his entanglement with two other participants and then is removed from the experiment; we also examine the scenario where two particles are in the same light cone, i.e. belong to a single participant. Our conclusion is that, in both cases, the proposed experiments are not convincing proofs against local realism.

We report on the experimental realization of a 4-qubit linear cluster state via two photons entangled both in polarization and linear momentum. This state was investigated by performing tomographic measurements and by evaluating an entanglement witness. By use of this state we carried out a novel nonlocality proof, the so-called ``stronger two observer all versus nothing'' test of quantum nonlocality.

We present a scheme to produce an entangled four-photon state from two pairs of entangled two-photon states. Such entangled four-photon states are equivalent to the quantum state of two maximally entangled spin-1 particles. The scheme can also be generated to prepare an entangled 2N-photon state from N pairs of entangled two-photon states. Such multi-photon states play a crucial role in fundamental tests of quantum mechanics versus local realism and in many quantum information and quantum computation schemes.
