We present the experimental observation of polarization entanglement for three spatially separated photons. Such states of more than two entangled particles, known as GHZ states, play a crucial role in fundamental tests of quantum mechanics versus local realism and in many quantum information and quantum computation schemes. Our experimental arrangement is such that we start with two pairs of entangled photons and register one photon in a way that any information as to which pair it belongs to is erased. The registered events at the detectors for the remaining three photons then exhibit the desired GHZ correlations.
In this paper we analyze entanglement classification of extended Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-symmetric states $ρ^{ES}$, which is parametrized by four real parameters $x$, $y_1$, $y_2$ and $y_3$. The condition for separable states of $ρ^{ES}$ is analytically derived. The higher classes such as bi-separable, W, and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger classes are roughly classified by making use of the class-specific optimal witnesses or map from the extended Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger symmetry to the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger symmetry. The proof of Bell's theorem without inequalities by Greenberger, Horne, and Zeilinger (GHZ) is extended to multiparticle multilevel systems. The proposed procedure generalizes previous partial results and provides an operational characterization of the so-called GHZ states for multiparticle multilevel systems.
Using simple quantum analysis we describe the correlations of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states by the use of Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) representation. Our conclusion is that while these states disprove local-realism they do not prove any nonlocality property.
This paper shows how the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger experiment, which demonstrates the nonlocal nature of quantum mechanics, can be performed using nuclear magnetic resonance on spins in molecules at finite temperature. The use of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques allows the experiment to uncover the nonlocality not just of special GHZ states, but of arbitrary three particle states.

The N-qubit states of the W class, for N>10, lead to more robust (against noise admixture) violations of local realism, than the GHZ states. An unsymmetrical quantum key distribution scheme is proposed, its security is guaranteed by the correlation of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger triplet state. In the proposed protocol, the distribution of quantum states are unsymmetrical. This unsymmetrical characteristic makes the transmission qubits (except the loss qubits) be useful. A general argument is presented against relativistic, unitary, single-outcome quantum mechanics. This is achieved by combining the Wigner's Friend thought experiment with measurements on a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state, and describing the evolution of the quantum state in various inertial frames. Assuming unitary quantum mechanics and single outcomes, the result is that the Born rule must be violated in some inertial frame: in that frame, outcomes are obtained for which no corresponding term exists in the pre-measurement wavefunction.
In all local realistic theories worked out till now, locality is considered as a basic assumption. Most people in the field consider the inconsistency between local realistic theories and quantum mechanics to be a result of non-local nature of quantum mechanics. In this Paper, we derive the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger type theorem for particles with instantaneous (non-local) interactions at the hidden-variable level. Then, we show that the previous contradiction still exists between quantum mechanics and non-local hidden variable models.
We show that the continuous-variable analogues to the multipartite entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of qubits violate Bell-type inequalities imposed by local realistic theories. Our results suggest that the degree of nonlocality of these nonmaximally entangled continuous-variable states, represented by the maximum violation, grows with increasing number of parties. This growth does not appear to be exponentially large as for the maximally entangled qubit states, but rather decreases for larger numbers of parties.
Three arguments based on the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) proof of the nonexistence of local hidden variables are presented. The first is a description of a simple game which a team that uses the GHZ method will always win. The second uses counterfactuals in an attempt to show that quantum theory is nonlocal in a stronger sense than is implied by the nonexistence of local hidden variables and the third describes peculiar features of time-symmetrized counterfactuals in quantum theory.
We show how to construct Greenberger-Horn-Zeilinger type paradoxes for continuous variable systems. We give two examples corresponding to 3 party and 5 party paradoxes. The paradoxes are revealed by carrying out position and momentum measurements. The structure of the quantum states which lead to these paradoxes is discussed.
We present a three-party simultaneous quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) scheme by using Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. This scheme can be directly generalized to $N$-party QSDC by using $n$-particle GHZ states. We show that the many-party simultaneous QSDC scheme is secure not only against the intercept-and-resend attack but also against the disturbance attack.

Lorentz transformation of three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state is studied. Also we obtain the relativistic spin joint measurement for the transformed state. Using these results it is shown that Bell's inequality is maximally violated for three-qubit GHZ state in relativistic regime. For ultrarelativistic particles we obtain the critical value for boost speed which Bell's inequality is not violated for velocities smaller than this value. We also show that in ultrarelativistic limit Bell's inequality is maximally violated for GHZ state.
The generation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states is a crucial problem in quantum information. We derive general conditions for obtaining GHZ states as eigenstates of a Hamiltonian. In general, degeneracy cannot be avoided if the Hamiltonian contains m-body interaction terms with m<=2 and a number of qubits strictly larger than 4. As an application, we explicitly construct a two-body 4-qubit Hamiltonian and a three-body 5-qubit Hamiltonian that exhibit a GHZ as a nondegenerate eigenstate.
We show how to construct states for which a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger type paradox occurs if each party measures either the position or momentum of his particle. The paradox can be ascribed to the anticommutation of certain translation operators in phase space. We then rephrase the paradox in terms of modular and binary variables. The origin of the paradox is then due to the fact that the associativity of addition of modular variables is true only for c-numbers but does not hold for operators.
By solving analytically a master equation in the Lindblad form, we study quantum teleportation of the one-qubit state under the influence of different surrounding environments, and compared the robustness between Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states in terms of their teleportation capacity. The results revealed that when subject to zero temperature environment, the GHZ state is always more robust than the W state, while the reverse situation occurs when the channel is subject to infinite temperature or dephasing environment.
The Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) argument against noncontextual local hidden variables is recast in quantum logical terms of fundamental propositions, states and probabilities. Unlike Kochen-Specker- and Hardy-like configurations, this operator based argument proceeds within four nonintertwining contexts. The nonclassical performance of the GHZ argument is due to the choice or filtering of observables with respect to a particular state. We study the varieties of GHZ games one could play in these four contexts, depending on the chosen state of the GHZ basis.
A proof of Bell's theorem without inequalities valid for both inequivalent classes of three-qubit entangled states under local operations assisted by classical communication, namely Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W, is described. This proof leads to a Bell inequality that allows more conclusive tests of Bell's theorem for three-qubit systems. Another Bell inequality involving both tri- and bipartite correlations is introduced which illustrates the different violations of local realism exhibited by the GHZ and W states.
The concatenated Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (C-GHZ) state is a new type of multipartite entangled state, which has potential application in future quantum information. In this paper, we propose a protocol of constructing arbitrary C-GHZ entangled state approximatively. Different from the previous protocols, each logic is encoded in the coherent state. This protocol is based on the linear optics, which is feasible in experimental technology. This protocol may be useful in quantum information based on the C-GHZ state.
Genuine 3-qubit entanglement comes in two different inconvertible types represented by the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and the W state. We describe a specific method based on local positive operator valued measures and classical communication that can convert the ideal N-qubit GHZ state to a state arbitrarily close to the ideal N-qubit W state. We then experimentally implement this scheme in the 3-qubit case and characterize the input and the final state using 3-photon quantum state tomography.
A realistic theory is constructed for the GHZ experiment. It is shown that the theory is local and it reproduces all the probabilistic predictions of quantum theory. This local realistic theory shows that GHZ had formulated Einstein's locality or no-action-at-a-distance principle incorrectly in their local realistic theory for the experiment.
We point out the relation between the work of Zheng and ours, APS [G.S. Agarwal, R.R. Puri, and R.P. Singh, Phys. Rev. A 56, 2249 (2001)] and show the important connection between the atomic cat state and the GHZ states.
We propose a probabilistic quantum cloning scheme using Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, Bell basis measurements, single-qubit unitary operations and generalized measurements, all of which are within the reach of current technology. Compared to another possible scheme via Tele-CNOT gate [D. Gottesman and I. L. Chuang, Nature 402, 390 (1999)], the present scheme may be used in experiment to clone the states of one particle to those of two different particles with higher probability and less GHZ resources.
A protocol for generating Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system of $N$ coupled qubits is proposed. The Hamiltonian model assumes $N$-wise interactions between the $N$ qubits and the presence of a controllable time-dependent field acting upon one spin only. Implementing such a scenario is in the experimental reach. The dynamical problem is exactly solved thanks to the symmetries of the Hamiltonian model. The possibility of generating GHZ states under both adiabatic and non-adiabatic conditions is shown and discussed in detail.
We report the first experimental violation of local realism in four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement. In the experiment, the non-statistical GHZ conflicts between quantum mechanics and local realism are confirmed, within the experimental accuracy, by four specific measurements of polarization correlations between four photons. In addition, our experimental results not only demonstrate a violation of Mermin-Ardehali-Belinskii-Klyshko inequality by 76 standard deviations, but also for the first time provide sufficient evidence to confirm the existence of genuine four-particl…
Recently, a new type of symmetry for three-qubit quantum states was introduced, the so-called Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) symmetry. It includes the operations which leave the three-qubit standard GHZ state unchanged. This symmetry is powerful as it yields families of mixed states that are, on the one hand, complex enough from the physics point of view and, on the other hand, simple enough mathematically so that their properties can be characterized analytically. In this article we show that the three-particle GHZ theorem can be reformulated in terms of inequalities, allowing imperfect correlations due to detector inefficiencies. We show quantitatively that taking into accout those inefficiencies, the published results of the Innsbruck experiment support the nonexistence of local hidden variables that explain the experimental result.
We study the generation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states of three path-encoded photons. Inspired by the seminal work of Bouwmeester et al. [1] on polarization-entangled GHZ states, we find a corresponding path representation for the photon states of an optical circuit, identify the elements required for the state generation, and propose a possible implementation of our strategy. We present a generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) theorem, which involves more than two local measurement settings for some parties, and cannot be reduced to one with less settings. Our results hold for an odd number of parties. We use a set of observables, which are incompatible but share a common eigenstate, here a GHZ state. Such observables are called concurrent. The idea is illustrated with an example of a three-qutrit system and then generalized to systems of higher dimensions, and more parties. The GHZ paradoxes can lead to, e.g., secret sharing protocols.
In a recent paper [S. Bagherinezhad and V. Karimipour, Phys. Rev. A 67, 044302 (2003)], a quantum secret sharing protocol based on reusable GHZ states was proposed. However, in this Comment, it is shown that this protocol is insecure if Eve employs a special strategy to attack.
We construct GHZ contradictions for three or more parties sharing an entangled state, the dimension d of each subsystem being an even integer greater than 2. The simplest example that goes beyond the standard GHZ paradox (three qubits) involves five ququats (d=4). We then examine the criteria a GHZ paradox must satisfy in order to be genuinely M-partite and d-dimensional.
We propose an efficient scheme for the generation of three-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state with linear optics and postselection. Several devices are designed and a two-mode quantum nondemolition (QND) detection is introduced to obtain the desired state. In a gedankenexperiment N particles in a generalized GHZ-type beam entangled state (each particle can be in one of M beams) are fed into N symmetric 2M-port beam splitters (spatially separated). Correlation functions for such a process (using the Bell numbers value assignment approach) reveal a remarkable symmetry. For N=M+1 greater or equal to 4 a series of GHZ paradoxes are shown.
We describe a novel method for producing Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in cold atoms coupled to a superconducting coplanar cavity. In the proposed scheme, atoms interact between each other by virtual photon exchange via a cavity mode. These interactions cause an asymmetric Rydberg blockade mechanism that suppresses simultaneous excitations into different atomic Rydberg levels, thus forcing all atoms to occupy the same Rydberg state. Contrary to conventional approaches using compatible composite observables, we employ incompatible and concurrent observables, whose common eigenstate is still a generalized GHZ state. We calculate the analytic expression for geometric measure of entanglement for arbitrary superposition of two $N$-qubit canonical orthonormal Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger ($GHZ$) states and the same for two $W$ states. In course of characterizing all kinds of nonclassical correlations, explicit formula for quantum discord (via relative entropy) for the former class of states has been presented. In this paper, we develop a quantum key distribution protocol based on the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states (GHZs). The particles are exchanged among the users in blocks through two steps. In this protocol, for three-particle GHZs three keys can be simultaneously generated. The advantage of this is that the users can select the most suitable key for communication. The protocol can be generalized to $N$ users to provide $N$ keys. The protocol has two levels for checking the eavesdroppers. Moreover, we discuss the security of the protocol against different attacks.

We give the formulas for the entanglement swapping of Bell states and GHZ states in any number of qubit systems. Consider four binary +-1 variables A, B, C and D for which classical reasoning implies ABCD = 1. In this case the knowledge of A, B, C automatically provides knowledge of D because D = ABC. However, the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox shows that despite classical prediction one can find quantum states and observables with well defined outcomes for which D = -ABC. First, we describe how to create a four-photon GHZ state in both polarization and spatial degrees of freedom from two pairs. With a two step optimization method of entanglement witness, we analytically propose a set of necessary and sufficient entanglement criteria for four qubit symmetric Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) diagonal states. While the set of symmetric states under the whole group transformation is represented by three real parameters, the set of symmetric states under the subgroup transformation is represented by two real parameters. We propose a scheme to probabilistically generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states encoded on the path degree of freedom of three photons. Quantum squeezing and entanglement of spins can be used to improve the sensitivity in quantum metrology. Here we propose a scheme to create collective coupling of an ensemble of spins to mechanical vibrational mode actuated by an external magnetic field. We find an evolution time where the mechanical motion decouples from the spins, and the accumulated geometric phase yields a squeezing of $5.9~\text{dB}$ for $20$ spins. The concatenated Greenberger-Horne-Zeiglinger (C-GHZ) state which is a new type of logic-qubit entanglement has attracted a lot of attentions recently. We present a feasible entanglement concentration protocol (ECP) for logic-qubit entanglement. This ECP is based on the linear optics, and it does not know the initial coefficients of the less-entangled C-GHZ state. This protocol can be extended to arbitrary C-GHZ state. This protocol may be useful in future quantum information processing tasks.
We show that the criticism of a recent comment \cite{ch2} on the insecurity of a quantum secret sharing protocol proposed in \cite{v2} is based on a misconception about the meaning of security and hence is invalid. The same misconception also appears in another comment of the authors \cite{ch1} on the security of an entangled-based quantum key distribution protocol \cite{zhang,v1}.
