Ellipticity of boundary value problems is characterized in terms of the Calderon projector. The presence of topological obstructions for the chiral Dirac operator under local boundary conditions in even dimension is discussed. Functional determinants for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary are considered.
The functional determinant for a Dirac operator on a bidimensional disk, in the presence of an Abelian gauge field and subject to global boundary conditions of the type introduced by Atiyah-Patodi-Singer, is evaluated. The relationship with the index theorem is also commented.
We study the finite temperature free energy and fermion number for Dirac fields in a one-dimensional spatial segment, under two different members of the family of local boundary conditions defining a self-adjoint Euclidean Dirac operator in two dimensions. For one of such boundary conditions, compatible with the presence of a spectral asymmetry, we discuss in detail the contribution of this part of the spectrum to the zeta-regularized determinant of the Dirac operator and, thus, to the finite temperature properties of the theory.
We consider operators of boundary value problems for 3D- Dirac operators in unbounded domains with the uniformly regular boundary. We give effective conditions of self-adjointness of operators under consideration and a description of their essential spectra. We also give applications to operators of the MIT bag problems for unbounded domains
We study a Dirac operator subject to Atiayh-Patodi-Singer like boundary conditions on the solid torus and show that the corresponding boundary value problem is elliptic, in the sense that the Dirac operator has a compact parametrix.
We study an example of an index problem for a Dirac-like operator subject to Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions on a noncommutative manifold with boundary, namely the quantum unit disk.
Under standard local boundary conditions or certain global APS boundary conditions, we get lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on compact spin manifolds with boundary. Limiting cases are characterized by the existence of real Killing spinors and the minimality of the boundary.
We study a self-adjoint realization of a massless Dirac operator on a bounded connected domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ which is frequently used to model graphene quantum dots. In particular, we show that this operator is the limit, as $M\to \infty$, of a Dirac operator defined on the whole plane, with a mass term of size $M$ supported outside $Ω$.
In this paper, we get the Kastler-Kalau-Walze theorem associated to Dirac operators with torsion on compact manifolds with boundary. We give two kinds of operator-theoretic explanations of the gravitational action in the case of 4-dimensional compact manifolds with flat boundary. Furthermore, we get the Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for four dimensional complex manifolds associated with nonminimal operators.
This paper studies an initial boundary value problem for a class of nonlinear Dirac equations with cubic terms and moving boundary. For the initial data with bounded $L^2$ norm and the suitable boundary conditions, the global existence and the uniqueness of the strong solution are proved.
We study massless Dirac fields in a portion of $AdS_3$, where one of the boundaries coincides with the "boundary at infinity" of the Anti-de-Sitter space. We evaluate the vacuum energy arising when the local boundary conditions dictated by boundary chirality are imposed, in different combinations, at both one-branes.
In this paper, we give two Lichnerowicz type formulas for Dirac operators and signature operators twisted by a vector bundle with a non-unitary connection. We also prove two Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for twisted Dirac operators and twisted signature operators on 4-dimensional manifolds with (resp. without) boundary.
In this paper inverse problems for Dirac operator with nonlocal conditions are considered. Uniqueness theorems of inverse problems from the Weyl-type function and spectra are provided, which are generalizations of the well-known Weyl function and Borg's inverse problem for the classical Dirac operator.
In this paper, we prove a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for perturbations of Dirac operators on compact manifolds with or without boundary. As a corollary, we give two kinds of operator-theoretic explanations of the gravitational action on boundary. We also compute the spectral action for Dirac operators with two-form perturbations on $4$-dimensional compact manifolds.
In this paper we study Dirac-Einstein equations on manifolds with boundary, restricted to a conformal class with constant boundary volume, under chiral bag boundary conditions for the Dirac operator. We characterize the bubbling phenomenon, also classifying ground state bubbles. Finally, we prove an Aubin-type inequality and a related existence result.
We derive a number of spectral results for Dirac operators in geometrically nontrivial regions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$ of tube or layer shapes with a zigzag type boundary using the corresponding properties of the Dirichlet Laplacian.
We consider a boundary value problem for the Dirac equation in a smooth, asymptotically flat Lorentzian manifold admitting a Killing field which is timelike near and tangential to the boundary. A self-adjoint extension of the Dirac Hamiltonian is constructed. Our results also apply to the situation that the space-time includes horizons, where the Hamiltonian fails to be elliptic.
We prove endpoint estimates with angular regularity for the wave and Dirac equations perturbed with a small potential. The estimates are applied to prove global existence for the cubic Dirac equation perturbed with a small potential, for small initial $H^{1}$ data with additional angular regularity. This implies in particular global existence in the critical energy space $H^{1}$ for small radial data.
Dirac equation written on the boundary of the Nutku helicoid space consists of a system of ordinary differential equations. We tried to analyze this system and we found that it has a higher singularity than those of the Heun's equations which give the solutions of the Dirac equation in the bulk. We also lose an independent integral of motion on the boundary. This facts explain why we could not find the solution of the system on the boundary in terms of known functions. We make the stability analysis of the helicoid and catenoid cases and end up with an appendix which gives a new example where …
The Maxwell-Dirac equations with nonzero charge mass in one space dimension are studied under the Lorentz gauge condition. The global existence and uniqueness of solution in $C([0,+\infty);L^2(R^1))\times C_b(R^1 \times [0,\infty))$ for initial value problem of Maxwell-Dirac equations are proved.
A recently proposed approach for avoiding the ultraviolet divergence of Hamiltonians with particle creation is based on interior-boundary conditions (IBCs). The approach works well in the non-relativistic case, that is, for the Laplacian operator. Here, we study how the approach can be applied to Dirac operators. While this has been done successfully already in 1 space dimension, and more generally for codimension-1 boundaries, the situation of point sources in 3 dimensions corresponds to a codimension-3 boundary. One would expect that, for such a boundary, Dirac operators do not allow for bou…
We consider the Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary and show well-posedness of the Cauchy initial-boundary value problem coupled to MIT-boundary conditions. This is achieved by transforming the problem locally into a symmetric positive hyperbolic system, proving existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and then using local methods developed by Lax, Phillips and Rauch, Massey to show smoothness of the solutions. Our proof actually works for a slightly more general class of local boundary conditions.
We prove that a single-jump quantum stochastic unitary evolution is equivalent to a Dirac boundary value problem on the half line in one extra dimension. It is shown that this exactly solvable model can be obtained from a Schroedinger boundary value problem for a positive relativistic Hamiltonian in the half-line as the inductive ultrarelativistic limit, correspondent to the input flow of Dirac particles with asymptotically infinite momenta. Thus the problem of stochastic approximation is reduced to the to the quantum-mechanical boundary value problem in the extra dimension. The question of mi…
New extrinsic lower bounds are given for the classical Dirac operator on the boundary of a compact domain of a spin manifold. The main tool is to solve some boundary problems for the Dirac operator of the domain under boundary conditions of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Spinorial techniques are used to give simple proofs of classical results for compact embedded hypersurfaces.
In these three lectures we will discuss some fundamental aspects of the theory of self-adjoint extensions of the covariant Laplace-Beltrami and Dirac operators on compact Riemannian manifolds with smooth boundary emphasizing the relation with the theory of global boundary conditions. Self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators, specially of the Laplace-Beltrami and Dirac operators, are fundamental in Quantum Physics as they determine either the energy of quantum systems and/or their unitary evolution. The well-known von Neumann's theory of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators is n…
Spectral boundary conditions for Laplace-type operators, of interest in string and brane theory, are partly Dirichlet, partly Neumann-type conditions, partitioned by a pseudodifferential projection. We give sufficient conditions for existence of associated heat trace expansions with power and power-log terms. The first log coefficient is a noncommutative residue, vanishing when the smearing function is 1. For Dirac operators with general well-posed spectral boundary conditions, it follows that the zeta function is regular at 0. In the selfadjoint case, the eta function has a simple pole at zer…
We investigate the properties of self-adjointness of a two-dimensional Dirac operator on an infinite sector with infinite mass boundary conditions and in presence of a Coulomb-type potential with the singularity placed on the vertex. In the general case, we prove the appropriate Dirac-Hardy inequality and exploit the Kato-Rellich theory. In the explicit case of a Coulomb potential, we describe the self-adjoint extensions for all the intensities of the potential relying on a radial decomposition in partial wave subspaces adapted to the infinite-mass boundary conditions. Finally, we integrate ou…
We are dealing with boundary conditions for Dirac-type operators, i.e., first order differential operators with matrix-valued coefficients, including in particular physical many-body Dirac operators. We characterize (what we conjecture is) the general form of reflecting boundary conditions (which includes known boundary conditions such as the one of the MIT bag model) and, as our main goal, of interior-boundary conditions (IBCs). IBCs are a new approach to defining UV-regular Hamiltonians for quantum field theories without smearing particles out or discretizing space. For obtaining such Hamilt…
We prove regularity for a class of boundary value problems for first order elliptic systems, with boundary conditions determined by spectral decompositions, under coefficient differentiability conditions weaker than previously known. We establish Fredholm properties for Dirac-type equations with these boundary conditions. Our results include sharp solvability criteria, over both compact and non-compact manifolds; weighted Poincare and Schroedinger-Lichnerowicz inequalities provide asymptotic control in the non-compact case. One application yields existence of solutions for the Witten equation …
We study the modular Hamiltonians of an interval for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. The most general boundary conditions ensuring the global energy conservation lead to consider two phases, where either the vector or the axial symmetry is preserved. In these two phases we derive the corresponding modular Hamiltonian in explicit form. Its density involves a bi-local term localised in two points of the interval, one conjugate to the other. The associated modular flows are also established. Depending on the phase, they mix fields with different chirality or charge that follow differ…
We prove the global existence of Dirac-wave maps with curvature term with small initial data on globally hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimension which satisfy a suitable growth condition. In addition, we also prove a global existence result for wave maps under similar assumptions.
We consider the four-component two-valley Dirac operator on a wedge in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with infinite mass boundary conditions, which enjoy a flip at the vertex. We show that it has deficiency indices $(1,1)$ and we parametrize all its self-adjoint extensions, relying on the fact that the underlying two-component Dirac operator is symmetric with deficiency indices $(0,1)$. The respective defect element is computed explicitly. We observe that there exists no self-adjoint extension, which can be decomposed into an orthogonal sum of two two-component operators. In physics, this effect is called mix…
We determine explicitly a boundary triple for the Dirac operator $H:=-iα\cdot \nabla + mβ+ \mathbb V(x)$ in $\mathbb R^3$, for $m\in\mathbb R$ and $\mathbb V(x)= |x|^{-1} ( ν\mathbb{I}_4 +μβ-i λα\cdot{x}/|x|\,β)$, with $ν,μ,λ\in \mathbb R$. Consequently we determine all the self-adjoint realizations of $H$ in terms of the behaviour of the functions of their domain in the origin. When $\sup_{x} |x||\mathbb V(x)| \leq 1$, we discuss the problem of selecting the distinguished extension requiring that its domain is included in the domain of the appropriate quadratic form.
This paper studies a class of nonlinear massless Dirac equations in one dimension, which include the equations for massless Thirring model and massless Gross-Neveu model. Under the assumptions that the initial data has small charge and is bounded, the global existence of the strong solution is established. The decay of the local charge is also proved.
This paper studies a class of nonlinear Dirac equations with cubic terms in $R^{1+1}$, which include the equations for the massive Thirring model and the massive Gross-Neveu model. Under the assumption that the initial data has bounded $L^2$ norm, the global existence and the uniqueness of the strong solution in $C([0,\infty),L^2(R^1))$ are proved.
In this note the three dimensional Dirac operator $A_m$ with boundary conditions, which are the analogue of the two dimensional zigzag boundary conditions, is investigated. It is shown that $A_m$ is self-adjoint in $L^2(Ω;\mathbb{C}^4)$ for any open set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ and its spectrum is described explicitly in terms of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in $Ω$. In particular, whenever the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian is purely discrete, then also the spectrum of $A_m$ consists of discrete eigenvalues that accumulate at $\pm \infty$ and one additional eigenvalue of infinit…
We combine space group representation theory together with scanning of closed subdomains of the Brillouin zone with Wilson loops to algebraically determine global band structure topology. Considering space group #19 as a case study, we show that the energy ordering of the irreducible representations at the high-symmetry points $\{Γ,S,T,U\}$ fully determines the global band topology, with all topological classes characterized through their simple and double Dirac-points.
We consider a generalized Dirac-Fock type evolution equation deduced from no-photon Quantum Electrodynamics, which describes the self-consistent time-evolution of relativistic electrons, the observable ones as well as those filling up the Dirac sea. This equation has been originally introduced by Dirac in 1934 in a simplified form. Since we work in a Hartree-Fock type approximation, the elements describing the physical state of the electrons are infinite rank projectors. Using the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock formalism, introduced by Chaix-Iracane ({\it J. Phys. B.}, 22, 3791--3814, 1989), and recent…
We propose a geometric approach to construct the Cauchy evolution operator for the Lorentzian Dirac operator on Cauchy-compact globally hyperbolic 4-manifolds. We realise the Cauchy evolution operator as the sum of two invariantly defined oscillatory integrals -- the positive and negative Dirac propagators -- global in space and in time, with distinguished complex-valued geometric phase functions. As applications, we relate the Cauchy evolution operators with the Feynman propagator and construct Cauchy surfaces covariances of quasifree Hadamard states.
We consider the nonlinear Dirac equations in one dimension and review various results on global existence of solutions in H1. Depending on the character of the nonlinear terms, existence of the large-norm solutions can be extended for all times. Global existence of the small-norm solutions is proved for the most general nonlinear Dirac equations with cubic and higher-order nonlinear terms. Integrability of the massive Thirring model is used to find conditions that no solitons occur in the Cauchy problem with small initial data in a subspace of L2.
A new class of semi-analytically solvable MHD alpha^2-dynamos is found based on a global diagonalization of the matrix part of the dynamo differential operator. Close parallels to SUSY QM are used to relate these models to the Dirac equation and to extract non-numerical information about the dynamo spectrum.
We are interested in the cubic Dirac equation with mass $m \in [0, 1]$ in two space dimensions, which is also known as the Soler model. We conduct a thorough study on this model with initial data sufficiently small in high regularity Sobolev spaces. First, we show the global existence of the model, which is uniform-in-mass. In addition, we derive a unified pointwise decay result valid for all $m \in [0, 1]$. Last but not least, we prove the cubic Dirac equations scatter linearly with an explicit scattering speed. When the mass $m=0$, we can show an improved pointwise decay result.
This paper deals with the study of the two-dimensional Dirac operatorwith infinite mass boundary condition in a sector. We investigate the question ofself-adjointness depending on the aperture of the sector: when the sector is convexit is self-adjoint on a usual Sobolev space whereas when the sector is non-convexit has a family of self-adjoint extensions parametrized by a complex number of theunit circle. As a byproduct of this analysis we are able to give self-adjointnessresults on polygones. We also discuss the question of distinguished self-adjointextensions and study basic spectral propert…
We prove a global limiting absorption principle on the entire real line for free, massless Dirac operators $H_0 = α\cdot (-i \nabla)$ for all space dimensions $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $n \geq 2$. This is a new result for all dimensions other than three, in particular, it applies to the two-dimensional case which is known to be of some relevance in applications to graphene. We also prove an essential self-adjointness result for first-order matrix-valued differential operators with Lipschitz coefficients.
This paper studies a class of nonlinear Dirac equations with cubic terms in $R^{1+1}$, which include the equations for the massive Thirring model and the massive Gross-Neveu model. Under the assumptions that the initial data has small charge, the global existence of the solution in $H^1$ are proved. The proof is given by introducing some Bony functional to get the uniform estimates on the nonlinear terms and the uniform bounds on the local smooth solution, which enable us to extend the local solution globally in time. Then $L^2$-stability estimates for these solutions are also established by a…
Let $D_t$, $t \in [0,1]$ be an arbitrary 1-parameter family of Dirac type operators on a two-dimensional disk with $m-1$ holes. Suppose that all operators $D_t$ have the same symbol, and that $D_1$ is conjugate to $D_0$ by a scalar gauge transformation. Suppose that all operators $D_t$ are considered with the same locally elliptic boundary condition, given by a vector bundle over the boundary. Our main result is a computation of the spectral flow for such a family of operators. The answer is obtained up to multiplication by an integer constant depending only on the number of the holes in the d…
One dimensional Dirac operators $$ L_{bc}(v) y = i 1 & 0 0 & -1 \frac{dy}{dx} + v(x) y, \quad y = y_1 y_2, \quad x\in[0,π]$$, considered with $L^2$-potentials $ v(x) = 0 & P(x) Q(x) & 0$ and subject to regular boundary conditions ($bc$), have discrete spectrum. For strictly regular $bc,$ the spectrum of the free operator $ L_{bc}(0) $ is simple while the spectrum of $ L_{bc}(v) $ is eventually simple, and the corresponding normalized root function systems are Riesz bases. For expansions of functions of bounded variation about these Riesz bases, we prove the uniform equiconvergence property and…
We show that the eigenvalues of the intrinsic Dirac operator on the boundary of a Euclidean domain can be obtained as the limits of eigenvalues of Euclidean Dirac operators, either in the domain with a MIT-bag type boundary condition or in the whole space, with a suitably chosen zero order mass term.
