We prove regularity for a class of boundary value problems for first order elliptic systems, with boundary conditions determined by spectral decompositions, under coefficient differentiability conditions weaker than previously known. We establish Fredholm properties for Dirac-type equations with these boundary conditions. Our results include sharp solvability criteria, over both compact and non-compact manifolds; weighted Poincare and Schroedinger-Lichnerowicz inequalities provide asymptotic control in the non-compact case. One application yields existence of solutions for the Witten equation with a spectral boundary condition used by Herzlich in his proof of a geometric lower bound for the ADM mass of asymptotically flat 3-manifolds.
Under standard local boundary conditions or certain global APS boundary conditions, we get lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on compact spin manifolds with boundary. Limiting cases are characterized by the existence of real Killing spinors and the minimality of the boundary.
In this paper, we give two Lichnerowicz type formulas for Dirac operators and signature operators twisted by a vector bundle with a non-unitary connection. We also prove two Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for twisted Dirac operators and twisted signature operators on 4-dimensional manifolds with (resp. without) boundary.
In this paper, we prove a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for perturbations of Dirac operators on compact manifolds with or without boundary. As a corollary, we give two kinds of operator-theoretic explanations of the gravitational action on boundary. We also compute the spectral action for Dirac operators with two-form perturbations on $4$-dimensional compact manifolds.
In this paper we study Dirac-Einstein equations on manifolds with boundary, restricted to a conformal class with constant boundary volume, under chiral bag boundary conditions for the Dirac operator. We characterize the bubbling phenomenon, also classifying ground state bubbles. Finally, we prove an Aubin-type inequality and a related existence result.
New extrinsic lower bounds are given for the classical Dirac operator on the boundary of a compact domain of a spin manifold. The main tool is to solve some boundary problems for the Dirac operator of the domain under boundary conditions of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Spinorial techniques are used to give simple proofs of classical results for compact embedded hypersurfaces.
We consider the Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary and show well-posedness of the Cauchy initial-boundary value problem coupled to MIT-boundary conditions. This is achieved by transforming the problem locally into a symmetric positive hyperbolic system, proving existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and then using local methods developed by Lax, Phillips and Rauch, Massey to show smoothness of the solutions. Our proof actually works for a slightly more general class of local boundary conditions.
Under two boundary conditions, the generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition and the modified generalized -Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition, we get the lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the fundamental Dirac operator on compact spin manifolds with nonempty boundary.
In this paper, we obtain two Lichnerowicz type formulas for the Dirac-Witten operators. And we give the proof of Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for the Dirac-Witten operators on 4-dimensional and 6- dimensional compact manifolds with (resp.without) boundary
On a compact globally hyperbolic Lorentzian spin manifold with smooth spacelike Cauchy boundary the (hyperbolic) Dirac operator is known to be Fredholm when Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions are imposed. In this paper we investigate to what extent these boundary conditions can be replaced by more general ones and how the index then changes. There are some differences to the classical case of the elliptic Dirac operator on a Riemannian manifold with boundary.
Eigenvalue estimate for the Dirac-Witten operator is given on bounded domains (with smooth boundary) of spacelike hypersurfaces satisfying the dominant energy condition, under four natural boundary conditions (MIT, APS, modified APS, and chiral conditions). This result is a generalisation of Friedrich's inequality for the usual Dirac operator. The limiting cases are also investigated.
In this paper, we define lower dimensional volumes of compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary. For five dimensional spin manifolds with boundary, we prove a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem associated with one-form perturbations of Dirac operators in this case.
In this paper, we establish two kinds of Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for Dirac operators and signature operators twisted by a vector bundle with a non-unitary connection on six-dimensional manifolds with boundary.
We give a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on a compact domain of a Riemannian spin manifold under the $\MIT$ bag boundary condition. The limiting case is characterized by the existence of an imaginary Killing spinor.
We establish the regularity theory for certain critical elliptic systems with an anti-symmetric structure under inhomogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary constraints. As applications, we prove full regularity and smooth estimates at the free boundary for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from spin Riemann surfaces. Our methods also lead to the full interior $ε$-regularity and smooth estimates for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps in all dimensions.
For spin manifolds with boundary we consider Riemannian metrics which are product near the boundary and are such that the corresponding Dirac operator is invertible when half-infinite cylinders are attached at the boundary. The main result of this paper is that these properties of a metric can be preserved when the metric is extended over a handle of codimension at least two attached at the boundary. Applications of this result include the construction of non-isotopic metrics with invertible Dirac operator, and a concordance existence and classification theorem.
Non-local boundary conditions, such as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) conditions, for Dirac operators on Riemannian manifolds are well understood while not much is known for such operators on spacetimes with timelike boundary. We define a class of Lorentzian boundary conditions that are local in time and non-local in the spatial directions and show that they lead to a well-posed Cauchy problem for the Dirac operator. This applies in particular to the APS conditions imposed on each level set of a given Cauchy temporal function.
For a sequence of coupled fields $\{(ϕ_n,ψ_n)\}$ from a compact Riemann surface $M$ with smooth boundary to a general compact Riemannian manifold with uniformly bounded energy and satisfying the Dirac-harmonic system up to some uniformly controlled error terms, we show that the energy identity holds during a blow-up process near the boundary. As an application to the heat flow of Dirac-harmonic maps from surfaces with boundary, when such a flow blows up at infinite time, we obtain an energy identity.
In this paper, we define the Green function for the Dirac operator under two local boundary conditions: the condition associated with a chirality operator (also called the chiral bag boundary condition) and the $\MIT$ bag boundary condition. Then we give some applications of these constructions for each Green function. From the existence of the chiral Green function, we derive an inequality on a spin conformal invariant which, in particular, solve the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary in some cases. Finally, using the $\MIT$ Green function, we give a simple proof of a positive mass the…
We show that the eigenvalues of the intrinsic Dirac operator on the boundary of a Euclidean domain can be obtained as the limits of eigenvalues of Euclidean Dirac operators, either in the domain with a MIT-bag type boundary condition or in the whole space, with a suitably chosen zero order mass term.
Along the lines of the classic Hodge-De Rham theory a general decomposition theorem for sections of a Dirac bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold is proved by extending concepts as exterior derivative and coderivative as well as as elliptic absolute and relative boundary conditions for both Dirac and Dirac Laplacian operators. Dirac sections are shown to be a direct sum of harmonic, exact and coexact spinors satisfying alternatively absolute and relative boundary conditions. Cheeger's estimation technique for spectral lower bounds of the Laplacian on differential forms is generalized to th…
In a series of papers, we will develop systematically the basic spectral theory of (self-adjoint) boundary value problems for operators of Dirac type. We begin in this paper with the characterization of (self-adjoint) boundary conditions with optimal regularity, for which we will derive the heat asymptotics and index theorems in subsequent publications. Along with a number of new results, we extend and simplify the proofs of many known theorems. Our point of departure is the simple structure which is displayed by Dirac type operators near the boundary. Thus our proofs are given in an abstract …
We consider a notion of conservation for the heat semigroup associated to a generalized Dirac Laplacian acting on sections of a vector bundle over a noncompact manifold with a (possibly noncompact) boundary under mixed boundary conditions. Assuming that the geometry of the underlying manifold is controlled in a suitable way and imposing uniform lower bounds on the zero order (Weitzenböck) piece of the Dirac Laplacian and on the endomorphism defining the mixed boundary condition we show that the corresponding conservation principle holds. A key ingredient in the proof is a domination property f…
We develop novel first-kind boundary integral equations for Euclidean Dirac operators in 3D Lipschitz domains comprising square-integrable potentials and involving only weakly singular kernels. Generalized Garding inequalities are derived and we establish that the obtained boundary integral operators are Fredholm of index zero. Their finite dimensional kernels are characterized and we show that their dimension is equal to the number of topological invariants of the domain's boundary, in other words to the sum of its Betti numbers. This is explained by the fundamental discovery that the associa…
We consider a gauge invariant one parameter family of families of fiberwise twisted Dirac type operators on a fiberation with the typical fiber an even dimensional compact manifold with boundary, i.e., a family $\{D_u\}, u\in [0,1]$ with $D_1=gD_0g^{-1}$ for a suitable unitary automorphism $g$ of the twisted bundle. Suppose all the operators $D_u$ are imposed with a certain \emph{local elliptic} boundary condition $F$ and $D_{u,F}$ is the self-adjoint extension of $D_u$. We establish a formula for the higher spectral flow of $\{D_{u,F}\}$, $u\in[0,1]$. Our result generalizes a recent result of…
The odd signature operator is a Dirac operator which acts on the space of differential forms of all degrees and whose square is the usual Laplacian. We extend the result of [15] to prove the gluing formula of the zeta-determinants of Laplacians acting on differential forms of all degrees with respect to the boundary conditions ${\mathcal P}_{-, {\mathcal L}_{0}}$, ${\mathcal P}_{+, {\mathcal L}_{1}}$. We next consider a double of de Rham complexes consisting of differential forms of all degrees with the absolute and relative boundary conditions. Using a similar method, we prove the gluing form…
On a smooth complete Riemannian spin manifold with smooth compact boundary, we demonstrate that the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator $\mathrm{D}_{\mathcal B}$ in $\mathrm{L}^{2}$ depends Riesz continuously on $\mathrm{L}^{\infty}$ perturbations of local boundary conditions ${\mathcal B}$. The Lipschitz bound for the map ${\mathcal B} \to {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathcal B}(1 + {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathcal B}^2)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ depends on Lipschitz smoothness and ellipticity of ${\mathcal B}$ and bounds on Ricci curvature and its first derivatives as well as a lower bound on injectivity radius. More generally, we …
We consider a generalized APS boundary problem for a G-invariant Dirac-type operator, which is not of product type near the boundary. We establish a delocalized version (a so-called Kirillov formula) of the equivariant index theorem for this operator. We obtain more explicit formulas for different geometric Dirac-type operators. In particular, we get a formula for the equivariant signature of a local system over a manifold with boundary. In case of a trivial local system, our formula can be viewed as a new way to compute the infinitesimal equivariant eta-invariant of S. Goette. We explicitly c…
The purpose of this note is to describe a unified approach to the fundamental results in the spectral theory of boundary value problems, restricted to the case of Dirac type operators. Even though many facts are known and well presented in the literature (cf. the monograph of Booss-Wojciechowski), we simplify and extend or sharpen most results by using systematically the simple structure which Dirac type operators display near the boundary. Thus our approach is basically functional analytic, and consequently we achieve results which apply to more general situations than compact manifolds with …
We re-visit the eigenvalue estimate of the Dirac operator on spin manifolds with boundary in terms of the first eigenvalues of conformal Laplace operator as well as the conformal mean curvature operator. These problems were studied earlier by Hijazi-Montiel-Zhang and Raulot and we re-prove them under weaker assumption that a boundary chirality operator exists. Moreover, on these spin manifolds with boundary, we show that any $C^{3,α}$ conformal compactification of some Poincare-Einstein metric must be the standard hemisphere when the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Dirac operator achieves its …
In this paper, we define the spectral Einstein functional associated with the Dirac operator for manifolds with boundary. And we give the proof of Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for the spectral Einstein functional associated with the Dirac operator on 4-dimensional manifolds with boundary.
In this paper, we prove a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for 4-dimensional and 6-dimensional spin manifolds with boundary associated with the conformal Robertson-Walker metric. And we give two kinds of operator theoretic explanations of the gravitational action for boundary in the case of 4-dimensional manifolds with flat boundary. In particular, for 6-dimensional spin manifolds with boundary with the conformal Robertson-Walker metric, we obtain the noncommutative residue of the composition of $π^+D^{-1}$ and $π^+D^{-3}$ is proportional to the Einstein-Hilbert action for manifolds with bound…
We investigate the problem of calculating the Fredholm index of a geometric Dirac operator subject to local (e.g. Dirichlet and Neumann) and non-local (APS) boundary conditions posed on the strata of a manifold with corners. The boundary strata of the manifold with corners can intersect in higher codimension. To calculate the index we introduce a glueing construction and a corresponding Lie groupoid. We describe the Dirac operator subject to mixed boundary conditions via an equivariant family of Dirac operators on the fibers of the Lie groupoid. Using a heat kernel method with rescaling we der…
We consider a Dirac-type operator $D_P$ on a vector bundle $V$ over a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with a nonempty boundary. The operator $D_P$ is specified by a boundary condition $P(u|_{\p M})=0$ where $P$ is a projector which may be a non-local, i.e. a pseudodifferential operator. We assume the existence of a chirality operator which decomposes $L^2(M, V)$ into two orthogonal subspaces $X_+ \oplus X_-$. Under certain conditions, the operator $D_P$ restricted to $X_+$ and $ X_-$ defines a pair of Fredholm operators which maps $X_+\to X_-$ and $X_-\to X_+$ correspondingly, giving rise …
Several proofs have been published of the Mod Z gluing formula for the eta-invariant of a Dirac operator. However, so far the integer contribution to the gluing formula for the eta-invariant is left obscure in the literature. In this article we present a gluing formula for the eta-invariant which expresses the integer contribution as a triple index involving the boundary conditions and the Calderon projectors of the two parts of the decomposition. The main ingredients of our presentation are the Scott-Wojciechowski theorem for the determinant of a Dirac operator on a manifold with boundary and…
In this paper we first establish the relation between the zeta-determinant of a Dirac Laplacian with the Dirichlet boundary condition and the APS boundary condition on a cylinder. Using this result and the gluing formula of the zeta-determinant given by Burghelea, Friedlander and Kappeler with some assumptions, we prove the adiabatic decomposition theorem of the zeta-determinant of a Dirac Laplacian. This result was originally proved by J. Park and K. Wojciechowski in [11] but our method is completely different from the one they presented.
We develop estimates for the solutions and derive existence and uniqueness results of various local boundary value problems for Dirac equations that improve all relevant results known in the literature. With these estimates at hand, we derive a general existence, uniqueness and regularity theorem for solutions of Dirac equations with such boundary conditions. We also apply these estimates to a new nonlinear elliptic-parabolic problem, the Dirac-harmonic heat flow on Riemannian spin manifolds. This problem is motivated by the supersymmetric nonlinear $σ$-model and combines a harmonic heat flow …
Let M be an even dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and let D be a Dirac operator acting on the sections of the Clifford module E over M. We impose certain local elliptic boundary conditions for D obtaining a selfadjoint extension D_F of D. For a smooth U(n)--valued function g:M -> U(n) we establish a formula for the spectral flow along the straight line between D_F and g^{-1} D_F g. This spectral flow is motivated by index theory: in odd dimensions it gives the natural pairing between the K--homology class of the operator and the K--theory class of g. In our situation, with…
We give results about the L^2 kernel and the spectrum of the Dirac operator on a complete Riemannian manifold which is conformally equivalent to the interior of a Riemannian manifold with nonempty boundary.
Using properties of the determinant line bundle for a family of elliptic boundary value problems, we explain how the Fock space functor defines an axiomatic quantum field theory which formally models the Fermionic path integral. The 'sewing axiom' of the theory arises as an algebraic pasting law for the determinant of the Dirac operator. We show how representations of the boundary gauge group fit into this description and that this leads to a Fock functor description of certain gauge anomalies.
