Under certain circumstances, the group velocity in a homogenized composite medium (HCM) can exceed the group velocity in its component material phases. We explore this phenomenon for a uniaxial dielectric HCM comprising isotropic component material phases distributed as oriented spheroidal particles. The theoretical approach is based upon the Bruggeman homogenization formalism. Enhancement in group velocity in the HCM with respect to the component material phases is shown to be sensitively dependent upon the shape of the component spheroids and their alignment relative to the direction of propagation.
The strong-property-fluctuation theory (SPFT) provides a sophisticated means of estimating the effective constitutive parameters of a homogenized composite material (HCM), which takes account of the statistical distribution of the component particles. We present an extended version of the third-order SPFT in which the component particles are represented as depolarization regions of nonzero volume. Numerical results are provided for a bianisotropic homogenization scenario wherein the HCM is a Faraday chiral medium. Thereby, convergence of the extended SPFT at the second-order level of approxima…
Homogenized composite materials (HCMs) can support a singular form of optical propagation, known as Voigt wave propagation, while their component materials do not. This phenomenon was investigated for biaxial HCMs arising from nondissipative isotropic dielectric component materials. The biaxiality of these HCMs stems from the oriented spheroidal shapes of the particles which make up the component materials. An extended version of the Bruggeman homogenization formalism was used to investigate the influence of component particle orientation, shape and size, as well as volume fraction of the comp…
In conventional approaches to the homogenization of random particulate composites, the component phase particles are often treated mathematically as vanishingly small, point-like entities. The electromagnetic responses of these component phase particles are provided by depolarization dyadics which derive from the singularity of the corresponding dyadic Green functions. Through neglecting the spatial extent of the depolarization region, important information may be lost, particularly relating to coherent scattering losses. We present an extension to the strong-property-fluctuation theory in whi…
A composite material comprising randomly distributed spherical particles of two different isotropic dielectric-magnetic materials is homogenized using the second-order strong-property-fluctuation theory in the long-wavelength approximation. Whereas neither of the two constituent materials by itself supports planewave propagation with negative phase velocity (NPV), the homogenized composite material (HCM) can. The propensity of the HCM to support NPV propagation is sensitive to the distributional statistics of the constituent material particles, as characterized by a two--point covariance funct…
When the electrically thin unit cell of a laminated composite material is made of two bianisotropic sheets whose constitutive properties in the thickness direction are decoupled from the constitutive properties in the interfacial planes, the laminated composite material can be homogenized into a material not all of whose constitutive parameters are independent of each other. This non-independence of the constitutive dyadics of the constituent materials and the homogenized composite material is captured by two simple constraints, which may not hold if even one of the two constituent materials h…
We report on a strategy for achieving negative phase velocity (NPV) in a homogenized composite medium (HCM) conceptualized using the Bruggeman formalism. The constituent material phases of the HCM do not support NPV propagation. The HCM and its constituent phases are isotropic dielectric-magnetic mediums; the real parts of their permittivities/permeabilities are negative-valued whereas the real parts of their permeabilities/permittivities are positive-valued.
An implementation of the strong-permittivity-fluctuation theory (SPFT) is presented in order to estimate the constitutive parameters of a homogenized composite material (HCM) which is both cubically nonlinear and anisotropic. Unlike conventional approaches to homogenization, the particles which comprise the component material phases are herein assumed to be small but not vanishingly small. The influence of particle size on the estimates of the HCM constitutive parameters is illustrated by means of a representative numerical example. It is observed that, by taking the nonzero particle size into…
The dispersion relations for conventional uniaxial dielectric mediums may be characterized as elliptical or elliptical-like, according to whether the medium is nondissipative or dissipative, respectively. However, under certain constitutive parameter regimes, the dispersion relations may be hyperbolic or hyperbolic-like. We investigate planewave propagation in a hyperbolic/hyperbolic-like uniaxial dielectric medium. For both evanescent and nonevanescent propagation, the phase velocity is found to be positive with respect to the time-averaged Poynting vector. A conceptualization of a hyperbolic…
The article demonstrates uncommon manifestation of spatial dispersion in low refractive index contrast 3D periodic dielectric composites with periods of about one tenth of the wavelength. First principles simulations by the well established plane wave method reveal that spatial dispersion leads to appearance of additional optical axes and can compensate anisotropy in certain directions.
The effective permittivity dyadic of a composite material containing particulate constituent materials with one constituent having the ability to display the Pockels effect is computed, using an extended version of the strong-permittivity-fluctuation theory which takes account of both the distributional statistics of the constituent particles and their sizes. Scattering loss, thereby incorporated in the effective electromagnetic response of the homogenized composite material, is significantly affected by the application of a low-frequency (dc) electric field.
We employ numerical simulations to show that highly localized, enhanced electromagnetic fields, also known as "hot spots," produced by a periodic array of silver nanoantennas can be spatially translated to the other side of a metal-dielectric composite superlens. The proposed translation of the hot spots enables surface-enhanced optical spectroscopy without the undesirable contact of molecules with metal, and thus it broadens and reinforces the potential applications of sensing based on field-enhanced fluorescence and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.
The Bergman-Milton bounds provide limits on the effective permittivity of a composite material comprising two isotropic dielectric materials. These provide tight bounds for composites arising from many conventional materials. We reconsider the Bergman-Milton bounds in light of the recent emergence of metamaterials, in which unconventional parameter ranges for relative permittivities are encountered. Specifically, it is demonstrated that: (a) for nondissipative materials the bounds may be unlimited if the constituent materials have relative permittivities of opposite signs; (b) for weakly dissi…
We report numerical experiments of optical wave propagation in composites of high refractive index dielectric rods at frequencies where their first electric and magnetic Mie resonances are excited. The arrays of these particles have been extensively studied and proposed as non-absorbing and isotropic metamaterials. We show that negative refraction, observed in ordered particle arrays, is due to diffraction and that an effective medium theory yields constitutive parameters that do not reproduce the observations in these composites, whose transmission also depends on the sample shape. This is fu…
Two different formalisms for the homogenization of composite materials containing oriented ellipsoidal particles of isotropic dielectric materials are being named after Bruggeman. Numerical studies reveal clear differences between the two formalisms which may be exacerbated: (i) if the component particles become more aspherical, (ii) at mid-range values of the volume fractions, and (iii) if the homogenized component material is dissipative. The correct Bruggeman formalism uses the correct polarizability density dyadics of the component particles, but the other formalism does not.
We propose a method for slowing down light pulses by using composites doped with metal nanoparticles. The underlying mechanism is related to the saturable absorption near the plasmon resonance in a pump-probe regime, leading to strong dispersion of the probe refractive index and significantly reduced group velocities. By using the non-collinear scheme, it is possible to realize the total fractional delay of 43 or larger values. This scheme promises simple and compact slow-light on-chip devices with tunable delay and THz bandwidth.
We consider an anisotropic homogenized composite medium (HCM) arising from isotropic particulate component phases based on ellipsoidal geometries. For cubically nonlinear component phases, the corresponding zeroth-order strong-permittivity-fluctuation theory (SPFT) (which is equivalent to the Bruggeman homogenization formalism) and second-order SPFT are established and used to estimate the constitutive properties of the HCM. The relationship between the component phase particulate geometry and the HCM constitutive properties is explored. Significant differences are highlighted between the esti…
Specially designed metal-dielectric composites can have a negative refractive index in the optical range. Specifically, it is shown that arrays of single and paired nanorods can provide such negative refraction. For pairs of metal rods, a negative refractive index has been observed at 1.5 micrometer. The inverted structure of paired voids in metal films may also exhibit a negative refractive index. A similar effect can be accomplished with metal strips in which the refractive index can reach -2. The refractive index retrieval procedure and the critical role of light phases in determining the r…
The Maxwell Garnett and Bruggeman formalisms were applied to estimate the effective permittivity dyadic of active dielectric composite materials. The active nature of the homogenized composite materials (HCMs) arises from one of the component materials which takes the form of InAs/GaAs quantum dots. Provided that the real parts of the permittivities of the component materials have the same sign, the Maxwell Garnett and Bruggeman formalisms give physically plausible estimates of the HCM permittivity dyadic that are in close agreement. However, if the real parts of the permittivities of the comp…
The Bruggeman formalism for the homogenization of particulate composite materials is used to predict the effective permittivity dyadic of a two-constituent composite material with one constituent having the ability to display the Pockels effect. Scenarios wherein the constituent particles are randomly oriented, oriented spheres, and oriented spheroids are numerically explored. Thereby, homogenized composite materials (HCMs) are envisaged whose constitutive parameters may be continuously varied through the application of a low-frequency (dc) electric field. The greatest degree of control over t…
Two active dielectric materials may be blended together to realize a homogenized composite material (HCM) which exhibits more gain than either component material. Likewise, two dissipative dielectric materials may be blended together to realize an HCM which exhibits more loss than either component material. Sufficient conditions for such gain/loss enhancement were established using the Bruggeman homogenization formalism. Gain/loss enhancement arises when (i) the imaginary parts of the relative permittivities of both component materials are similar in magnitude and (ii) the real parts of the re…
A composite plasmonic slab based on double-layer metallic gratings and a dielectric film is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in terahertz (THz) regions, which can support two resonance modes and then form a broad bandgap (40%). As compared to the double-layer metal grating, the dielectric film in composite THz slabs significantly enhances the transmission of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. Electric field vector proved that the low-frequency resonance mode originates from the symmetric plasmonic mode and the high-frequency resonance mode is induced by the hybrid mode of plasmonic …
The homogenization of a composite material comprising three isotropic dielectric materials was investigated. The component materials were randomly distributed as spherical particles, with the particles of two of the component materials being coupled to form dimers. The Bruggeman and Maxwell Garnett formalisms were developed to estimate the permittivity dyadic of the homogenized composite material (HCM), under the quasi-electrostatic approximation. Both randomly oriented and identically oriented dimers were accommodated; in the former case the HCM is isotropic, whereas in the latter case the HC…
We investigate the capabilities of the effective non-retarded method (ENR) to explore and design nanoparticles composites with specific optical properties. We consider a composite material comprising periodically distributed metallic spheres in a dielectric host matrix. The effective macroscopic dielectric function of the composite medium is obtained by means of the ENR and is used to calculate the electromagnetic response of a slab made of such an inhomogeneous material. This response is compared with that obtained using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker wave calculation method (KKR). We analyze the…
We have derived the local electric field inside graded metal-dielectric composite films with weak nonlinearity analytically, which further yields the effective linear dielectric constant and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the graded structures. As a result, the composition-dependent gradation can produce a broad resonant plasmon band in the optical region, resulting in a large enhancement of the optical nonlinearity and hence a large figure of merit.
In conventional approaches to the homogenization of random particulate composites, both the distribution and size of the component phase particles are often inadequately taken into account. Commonly, the spatial distributions are characterized by volume fraction alone, while the electromagnetic response of each component particle is represented as a vanishingly small depolarization volume. The strong-permittivity-fluctuation theory (SPFT) provides an alternative approach to homogenization wherein a comprehensive description of distributional statistics of the component phases is accommodated. …
Under certain circumstances, Voigt waves can propagate in a biaxial composite medium even though the component material phases individually do not support Voigt wave propagation. This phenomenon is considered within the context of the strong--permittivity--fluctuation theory. A generalized implementation of the theory is developed in order to explore the propagation of Voigt waves in any direction. It is shown that the correlation length--a parameter characterizing the distributional statistics of the component material phases--plays a crucial role in facilitating the propagation of Voigt wave…
Voigt wave propagation (VWP) was considered in a porous biaxial dielectric material which was infiltrated with a material of refractive index $n_a$. The infiltrated material was regarded as a homogenized composite material in the long-wavelength regime and its constitutive parameters were estimated using the extended Bruggeman homogenization formalism. In our numerical studies, the directions which support VWP were found to vary by as much as $300^\circ$ per RIU as the refractive index $n_a$ was varied. The sensitivities achieved were acutely dependent upon the refractive index $n_a$ and the d…
We present an effective model for a subwavelength periodically patterned metallic layer, its cavities being filled with a nonlinear dielectric material, which accounts for both the linear and second order behavior. The effective non linear susceptibility for the homogenized layer is driven by the nonlinearity of the dielectric material and by the geometrical parameters, thus leading to much higher susceptibility than existing materials. This leads to a huge enhancement of non linear processes when used together with resonances. Furthermore, multiple resonances are taking place in the metallic …
We report hybridization induced transparency (HIT) in a composite medium consisting of a metamaterial and a dielectric. We develop an analytic model that explains HIT by coherent coupling between the hybridized local fields of the metamaterial and the dielectric or an atomic system in general. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we evidence HIT in a split ring resonator metamaterial that is coupled to α-lactose monohydrate. Both, the analytic model and numerical calculations confirm and explain the experimental observations. HIT can be considered as a hybrid analogue to electromagnetically ind…
We consider a sub-wavelength periodic layered medium whose slabs are filled by arbitrary linear metamaterials and standard nonlinear Kerr media and we show that the homogenized medium behaves as a Kerr medium whose parameters can assume values not available in standard materials. Exploiting such a parameter availability, we focus on the situation where the linear relative dielectric permittivity is very small thus allowing the observation of the extreme nonlinear regime where the nonlinear polarization is comparable with or even greater than the linear part of the overall dielectric response. …
The linear strong--property--fluctuation theory (SPFT) was developed in order to estimate the constitutive parameters of certain homogenized composite materials (HCMs) in the long--wavelength regime. The component materials of the HCM were generally orthorhombic $mm2$ piezoelectric materials, which were randomly distributed as oriented ellipsoidal particles. At the second--order level of approximation, wherein a two--point correlation function and its associated correlation length characterize the component material distributions, the SPFT estimates of the HCM constitutive parameters were expr…
Deep-subwavelength all-dielectric composite materials are believed to tightly obey the Maxwell Garnett effective medium theory. Here, we demonstrate that the Maxwell Garnett theory could break down due to evanescent fields in deep-subwavelength dielectric structures. By utilizing two- and three-dimensional dielectric composite materials with inhomogeneities at the scale of λ/100, we show that local evanescent fields generally occur nearby the dielectric inhomogeneities. When tiny absorptive constituents are placed there, the absorption and transmission of the whole composite will show strong d…
We report on design and fabrication of nano-composite metal-dielectric thin film coatings with high reflectance asymmetries. Applying basic dispersion engineering principles to model a broadband and large reflectance asymmetry, we obtain a model dielectric function for the metamaterial film, closely resembling the effective permittivity of disordered metal-dielectric nano-composites. Coatings realized using disordered nanocrystalline silver films deposited on glass substrates confirm the theoretical predictions, exhibiting symmetric transmittance, large reflectance asymmetries and a unique fla…
We generalize the Bergman-Milton spectral representation, originally derived for a two-component composite, to extract the spectral density function for the effective dielectric constant of a graded composite. This work has been motivated by a recent study of the optical absorption spectrum of a graded metallic film [Applied Physics Letters, 85, 94 (2004)] in which a broad surface-plasmon absorption band has been shown to be responsible for enhanced nonlinear optical response as well as an attractive figure of merit. It turns out that, unlike in the case of homogeneous constituent components, …
We introduce a hybrid method for dielectric-metal composites that describes the dynamics of the metallic system classically whilst retaining a quantum description of the dielectric. The time-dependent dipole moment of the classical system is mimicked by the introduction of projected equations of motion (PEOM) and the coupling between the two systems is achieved through an effective dipole-dipole interaction. To benchmark this method, we model a test system (semiconducting quantum dot-metal nanoparticle hybrid). We begin by examining the energy absorption rate, showing agreement between the PEO…
Cloaking techniques conceal objects by controlling the flow of electromagnetic waves to minimize scattering. Herein, the effectiveness of homogenized anisotropic materials in non-resonant dielectric multilayer cloaking is studied. Because existing multilayer cloaking by isotropic materials can be regarded as homogenous anisotropic cloaking from a macroscopic view, anisotropic materials can be efficiently designed through optimization of their physical properties. Anisotropic properties can be realized in two-phase composites if the physical properties of the material are within appropriate bou…
An effective cylindrical cloak may be conceptualized as an assembly of adjacent local neighbourhoods, each of which is made from a homogenized composite material (HCM). The HCM is required to be a certain uniaxial dielectric-magnetic material, characterized by positive-definite constitutive dyadics. It can arise from the homogenization of remarkably simple component materials, such as two isotropic dielectric-magnetic materials, randomly distributed as oriented spheroidal particles. By carefully controlling the spheroidal shape of the component particles, a high degree of HCM anisotropy may be…
Within the framework of quantum electrodynamics (QED), vacuum is a nonlinear medium which can be linearized for a rapidly time-varying electromagnetic field with a small amplitude subjected to a magnetostatic field. The linearized QED vacuum is a uniaxial dielectric-magnetic medium for which the degree of anisotropy is exceedingly small. By implementing an affine transformation of the spatial coordinates, the degree of anisotropy may become sufficiently large as to be readily perceivable. The inverse Bruggeman formalism can be implemented to specify a homogenized composite material (HCM) which…
A random mixture of two isotropic dielectric materials, one composed of oriented spheroidal particles of relative permittivity $ε_a$ and the other composed of oriented spheroidal particles of relative permittivity $ε_b$, was considered in the long wavelength regime. The permittivity dyadic of the resulting homogenized composite material (HCM) was estimated using the Bruggeman homogenization formalism. The HCM was an orthorhombic biaxial material if the symmetry axes of the two populations of spheroids were mutually perpendicular and a uniaxial material if these two axes were mutually aligned. …
There is a study of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in composite medium (CM) which is made of metal-dielectric composition. The CM, an orthorhombic shaped slab, is illuminated by two identical Gaussian beams (GB) incident at equal angle of incidence and focused on the two interfaces between wall of slab and air from opposite side. It has determine the necessary conditions required for CPA and shows that perfect CPA is possible with GBs. Author also shows broader beams exhibit more absorption than comparatively tightly focused beams.
The Bruggeman formalism is implemented to estimate the refractive index of an isotropic, dielectric, homogenized composite medium (HCM). Invoking the well--known Hashin--Shtrikman bounds, we demonstrate that the group velocity in certain HCMs can exceed the group velocities in their component materials. Such HCMs should therefore be considered as metamaterials.
We investigate the behaviour of a three-phase composite, structured as a hexagonal array of coated cylinders, when the sum of the dielectric constants of the core and shell equals zero. In such cases, the absorption of the composite is the same as the absorption of a periodic array of solid cylinders of core material and radius equal to the outer radius of the original coated cylinder. When the sum of the dielectric constants of the shell and matrix equals zero, the composite has the same absorption as a periodic array of solid cylinders of core material, and radius exceeding the shell radius.
We have developed a nonlinear differential effective dipole approximation (NDEDA), in an attempt to investigate the effective linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of composite media in which graded spherical inclusions with weak nonlinearity are randomly embedded in a linear host medium. Alternatively, based on a first-principles approach, we derived exactly the linear local field inside the graded particles having power-law dielectric gradation profiles. As a result, we obtain also the effective linear dielectric constant and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Excellent agreemen…
We develop a formalism for the calculation of the macroscopic dielectric response of composite systems made of particles of one material embedded periodically within a matrix of another material, each of which is characterized by a well defined dielectric function. The nature of these dielectric functions is arbitrary, and could correspond to dielectric or conducting, transparent or opaque, absorptive and dispersive materials. The geometry of the particles and the Bravais lattice of the composite are also arbitrary. Our formalism goes beyond the longwavelenght approximation as it fully incorpo…
We demonstrate that under certain conditions, fractional Talbot revivals can occur in heterostructures of composite metamaterials, such as multilayer positive and negative index media, metallodielectric stacks, and one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals. Most importantly, without using the paraxial approximation we obtain Talbot images for the feature sizes of transverse patterns smaller than the illumination wavelength. A general expression for the Talbot distance in such structures is derived, and the conditions favorable for observing Talbot effects in layered heterostructures is disc…
A new approach to producing a composite material with negative refraction index is demonstrated. It is shown that a photonic structure consisting of two dielectric materials, with positive and negative dielectric permittivities, can support electromagnetic surface waves which exhibit the unusual electromagnetic property of left-handedness (or negative refraction index). Depending on the dielectric materials, these surface waves localized at the dielectric interfaces can be either surface plasmons, or phonons. The detailed geometry of the structure determines whether this composite left-handed …

Theoretical Prediction of the Effective Dynamic Dielectric Constant of Disordered Hyperuniform Anisotropic Composites Beyond the Long-Wavelength Regime
We have studied the effective response of composites of spherical particles with a dielectric profile which varies along the radius of the particles. We developed a differential effective dipole theory to compute the dipole moment of individual spherical particle and hence the effective dielectric response of a dilute suspension. The theory has been applied to two model dielectric profiles. Moreover, we compare the approximate results with the exact results of the power-law profile and the agreement is excellent.
