The dispersion relations for conventional uniaxial dielectric mediums may be characterized as elliptical or elliptical-like, according to whether the medium is nondissipative or dissipative, respectively. However, under certain constitutive parameter regimes, the dispersion relations may be hyperbolic or hyperbolic-like. We investigate planewave propagation in a hyperbolic/hyperbolic-like uniaxial dielectric medium. For both evanescent and nonevanescent propagation, the phase velocity is found to be positive with respect to the time-averaged Poynting vector. A conceptualization of a hyperbolic--like uniaxial medium as a homogenized composite medium is presented.
In this overview paper, we investigate the dispersion of electromagnetic waves for dissipative and non-dissipative dielectric-magnetic uniaxial mediums. Changing the sign of one component of dielectric permittivity (ε) or magnetic permeability (μ) from positive to negative will lead to sixteen different cases (real or imaginary) for a non-dissipative medium and eight different cases for dissipative one. In a non-dissipative medium, dispersion relations follow the elliptic/hyperbolic relations. This rule completely vanishes regarding the dissipative medium. While the number of dispersion cases …
We analyze surface electromagnetic waves with hyperbolic dispersion supported at the interface between a semi-infinite isotropic medium and an effective uniaxial material. Apart from known types plasmons with hyperbolic dispersion curve, sometimes referred to as Dyakonov plasmons [Z. Jacob and E. E. Narimanov, APL 93, 221109 (2008)], we classify two new types of surface waves with hyperbolic dispersion. One type of such waves, in contrary to Dyakonov plasmons, does not require hyperbolic metamaterials to be involved. These hybrid-polarized plasmon modes with both TE and TM electromagnetic comp…
Dyakonov-Tamm waves guided jointly by an ordinary, isotropic, homogeneous, dielectric material and a hyperbolic, dielectric, structurally chiral material
Plasmon resonance, with strong coupling of light to electrons at a metal-dielectric interface, allows light confinement and control at subwavelength scale. It's fundamentally limited by the inherent mobility of the electrons, leading to the corresponding non-locality of the electromagnetic response. We report that this non-locality also results in the formation of a hyperbolic layer near the metal-dielectric interface, with a strong anisotropy of its electromagnetic response. While the resulting "hyperbolic blockade" leads to the suppression of the conventional plasmon resonance, the hyperboli…
In this article, we demonstrate experimentally and verified numerically the excitation of Berreman modes that propagate in a dielectric film of uniaxial anisotropic nanoporous alumina grown on an aluminium substrate. It is an air-dielectric-metal asymmetric polaritonic system with a real part of the effective permittivity having a value near zero. The modes are excited at a wavelength lower than the epsilon near zero wavelength region. Minimum reflection is observed for the mid-infrared p-polarized light, while maximum reflection is observed for the s-polarized light. The experimental results …
Surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) in polar dielectrics offer new opportunities for infrared nanophotonics due to sub-diffraction confinement with low optical losses. Though the polaritonic field confinement can be significantly improved by modifying the dielectric environment, it is challenging to break the fundamental limits in photon confinement and propagation behavior of SPhP modes. In particular, as SPhPs inherently propagate isotropically in these bulk polar dielectrics, how to collectively realize ultra-large field confinement, in-plane hyperbolicity and unidirectional propagation remai…
Propagation of the surface waves on the interface between an uniaxial hyperbolic material and an isotopical topological insulator is studied. The cases of the anisotropy axes is normal to interface or one is coplanar to interface are discussed. The dispersion relations are derived and analyzed. The conditions of the existence of the surface waves are established.
Black phosphorus (BP) as a promising two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical properties constitutes an excellent building block in multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials. In this work, we design a multilayer structure composed of BP/dielectric layer stacking unit cells patterned on a gold mirror and theoretically demonstrate the tunable anisotropic absorption in the infrared regime. The electric dipole resonance between the adjacent unit cells drives the structure in the critical coupling state, and impedance of the structure matches to that of free space, showing the perfect absorpti…
From surface to volume plasmons in hyperbolic metamaterials: General existence conditions for bulk high-k waves in metal-dielectric and graphene-dielectric multilayers
We theoretically investigate coupling interaction between molecule excitons and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) that approaches the limit of single exciton strong coupling in hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) cavity, composed of a dielectric core wrapped by several stacks of alternative layers of metal and dielectric. We demonstrate that associated with the excitation of the whispering gallery mode, the electric fields with resonance wavelengths that are much larger than the cavity size can be highly localized within a dielectric layer, leading to extremely small mode volumes. By using temporal co…
Surface scattering of free electrons strongly modifies the electromagnetic response near the interface. Due to the inherent anisotropy of the surface scattering that necessarily reverses the normal the interface component of the electron velocity while its tangential component may remain the same, a thin layer near a high-quality interface shows strong dielectric anisotropy. The formation of the resulting hyperbolic dispersion layers near the metal-dielectric interface strongly modifies the local density of states, and leads to orders of magnitude changes in all associated phenomena.
Engineering plasmonic metamaterials with anisotropic optical dispersion enables us to tailor the properties of metamaterial-based waveguides. We investigate plasmonic waveguides with dielectric cores and multilayer metal-dielectric claddings with hyperbolic dispersion. Without using any homogenization, we calculate the resonant eigenmodes of the finite-width cladding layers, and find agreement with the resonant features in the dispersion of the cladded waveguides. We show that at the resonant widths, the propagating modes of the waveguides are coupled to the cladding eigenmodes and hence, are …
We investigate the optical properties of sub-wavelength layered metal/dielectric structures, also known as hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), using exact analytical Kronig Penney (KP) model. We show that hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces exist for all combinations of layer permittivities and thicknesses, and the largest Purcell enhancements (PE) of spontaneous radiation are achieved away from the nominally hyperbolic region. Detailed comparison of field distributions, dispersion curves, and Purcell factors (PF) between the HMMs and Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) guided modes in metal/dielectri…
We report the infrared dielectric properties of $α$-quartz in the temperature range from $1.5\ \mathrm{K}$ to $200\ \mathrm{K}$. Using an infrared free-electron laser, far-infrared reflectivity spectra of a single crystal $y$-cut were acquired along both principal axes, under two different incidence angles, in S- and P-polarization. These experimental data have been fitted globally for each temperature with a multioscillator model, allowing to extract frequencies and damping rates of the ordinary and extraordinary, transverse and longitudinal optic phonon modes, and hence the temperature-depen…
Guided wave modes in a symmetric slab waveguide formed by an isotropic dielectric layer with cubic nonlinear response placed in the hyperbolic surrounding medium are investigated theoretically. Optical axis of the hyperbolic medium is normal to the slab plane. If dielectric permittivity of the waveguide core is more than extraordinary permittivity of the hyperbolic medium each TM mode has two cut-off frequencies. The dispersion relations for these modes are found and numerically solved for cases of focusing and defocussing medium of the core. Number of possible modes at given frequency depends…
Optical cavities, plasmonic structures, photonic band crystals, interfaces, as well as, generally speaking, any photonic media with homogeneous or spatially inhomogeneous dielectric permittivity (including metamaterials) have local densities of photonic states, which are different from that in vacuum. These modified density of states environments are known to control both the rate and angular distribution of spontaneous emission. In the present study, we ask the question whether the proximity to metallic and metamaterial surfaces can affect other physical phenomena of fundamental and practical…
Highly-anisotropic plasmonic nanotubes exhibit a dramatic drop of the scattering cross section in the transition regime from hyperbolic to elliptic dispersion. The characterization of a realistic multilayered metamaterial is typically carried out by means of an effective medium approach providing average components of the permittivity tensor and wave fields. Here, the edge effects of the metal-dielectric stratified nanotube for different combinations were thoroughly analyzed. We show how the boundary layers, which in principle remain fully irrelevant in the estimation of the effective permitti…
The energy propagation of electromagnetic fields in the effective medium of a one-dimensional photonic crystal consisting of dielectric and metallic layers is investigated. We show that the medium behaves like Drude and Lorentz medium, respectively, when the electric field is parallel and perpendicular to the layers. For arbitrary time-varying electromagnetic fields in this medium, the energy density formula is derived. We prove rigorously that the group velocity of any propagating mode obeying the hyperbolic dispersion must be slower than the speed of light in vacuum, taking into account the …
Tuning the macroscopic dielectric response on demand holds potential for actively tunable metaphotonics and optical devices. In recent years, graphene has been extensively investigated as a tunable element in nanophotonics. Significant theoretical work has been devoted on the tuning the hyperbolic properties of graphene/dielectric heterostructures, however, until now, such a motif has not been demonstrated experimentally. Here we focus on a graphene/polaritonic dielectric metamaterial, with strong optical resonances arising from the polar response of the dielectric, which are, in general, diff…
Harnessing artificial optical magnetism requires rather complex two- and three-dimensional structures, examples include split-ring and fishnet metamaterials and nanoparticles with non-trivial magnetic properties. By contrast, dielectric properties can be tailored even in planar and pattern-free, one-dimensional (1D) arrangements, for example metal/dielectric multilayer metamaterials. These systems are extensively investigated due to their hyperbolic and plasmonic response, which, however, is considered to be limited to TM polarization, based on the general consensus that they do not possess in…
We study optical waveguides that include layers of materials and metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion (HMM). We consider long-range regime at the dielectric-HMM interface in different waveguide geometries (single interface or symmetric cladding with different layers). In contrast to the traditional analysis of geometrical parameters, we make emphasis on optical properties of constituent materials, and by solving dispersion equations, analyze how dielectric and HMM permittivities affect propagation length and mode size. We derive a figure of merits that should be used for each waveguide in …
Guided waves modes in a slab waveguide formed from the isotropic dielectric layer embedded by hyperbolic materials are investigated. Optical axis is normal to the slab plane. The dispersion relations for TE and TM waves are found. The differences between hyperbolic waveguide and conventional one are demonstrated. In particular, for each TM mode of hyperbolic waveguide there are two cut-off frequencies and the number of modes is limited. For the TE and TM modes Poynting vector component along the wave's propagation axis could be equal to zero.

Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are generated when infrared photons couple to polar optic phonons in anisotropic media, confining long-wavelength light to nanoscale volumes. However, to realize the full potential of HPhPs for infrared optics, it is crucial to understand propagation and loss mechanisms on substrates suitable for applications from waveguiding to infrared sensing. In this paper, we employ scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and nano-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, in concert with analytical and numerical calculations, to elucidate …
We study the electronic band structure and optical conductivity of an array of tunnel-coupled array of graphene nanoribbons. We show that due to the coupling of electronic edge states for the zigzag nanoribbon structure, the Fermi surface can become a hyperbola similarly to the case of the layered metal-dielectric structures, where the hyperbolic isofrequency contours originate from the coupling of localized surface plasmon polaritons. Moreover, we show that for both types of the ribbon edge, the optical response of the structure can be characterized by a uniaxial conductivity tensor, having p…
Light in hyperbolic dispersion media is known to exhibit an intriguing ray-like character. However, detailed understanding of ray-like excitations in hyperbolic media is surprisingly limited, mostly based on numerical simulations. In our work, we analytically describe the formation of multimodal ray-like excitations in a planar slab of hyperbolic media. We demonstrate that these rays have an approximately Lorentzian profile and that they propagate in a zig-zagged manner. These rays acquire phase in a discrete fashion at every internal reflection inside the slab and broaden at a rate which is p…
The propagation of a quasi-harmonic electromagnetic wave in a bulk hyperbolic dielectric metamaterial is considered. If the group velocities dispersion is not taken into account, then wave propagation can be described either by the hyperbolic nonlinear Schrodinger equation or by the hyperbolic Manakov equations. It is shown that the region in the space of wave vectors in which the modulation instability of a spatially homogeneous wave is possible is not limited, in contrast to the case of ordinary media.

Uniaxial materials whose axial and tangential permittivities have opposite signs are referred to as indefinite or hyperbolic media. In such materials light propagation is unusual, leading to novel and often non-intuitive optical phenomena. Here we report infrared nano-imaging experiments demonstrating that crystals of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a natural mid-infrared hyperbolic material, can act as a "hyper-focusing lens" and as a multi-mode waveguide. The lensing is manifested by subdiffractional focusing of phonon-polaritons launched by metallic disks underneath the hBN crystal. The wave…
We develop a theory of nonlocal homogenization for metamaterial consisting of parallel metallic wires with dielectric coating. It is demonstrated that manipulation of dielectric contrast between wire dielectric shell and host material results in switching of metamaterial dispersion regime from elliptic to the hyperbolic one, i.e. the topological transition takes place. We confirm our theoretical predictions by full-wave numerical simulations.
Hyperbolic Metamaterials, as a non-magnetic anisotropic artificial structure, show metal properties in one direction and dielectric behavior in orthogonal directions. The proposed hyperbolic metamaterial filter in this project is designed with the metal wire mesh perpendicular to the alternative layers of dielectric materials, keeps TM center wavelength unchanged for the different angle of incident light in MDIR regime. The geometric size of this nanostructure is smaller than the working wavelength and supports big wavevectors due to hyperbolic dispersion. In contrast with conventional Bragg s…
We report on the optical and physical characterization of metallic nanowire (NW) metamaterials fabricated by electrodeposition of ~30 nm diameter gold nanowires in nano-porous anodic aluminum oxide. We observe a uniaxial anisotropic dielectric response for the NW metamaterials that displays both epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) resonances. We show that a fundamental difference in the behavior of NW-metamaterials from metal-dielectric multilayer (ML) metamaterials is the differing directions of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) dielectric responses relat…
Hyperbolic crystals like α-MoO$_3$ can support large wavevectors and photon density as compared to the commonly used dielectric crystals, which makes them a highly desirable platform for compact photonic devices. The extreme anisotropy of the dielectric constant in these crystals is intricately linked with the anisotropic character of the phonons, which along with photon confinement leads to the rich physics of phonon polaritons. However, the chiral nature of phonons in these hyperbolic crystals have not been studied in detail. In this study, we report our observations of helicity selective Ra…
