We report the infrared dielectric properties of $α$-quartz in the temperature range from $1.5\ \mathrm{K}$ to $200\ \mathrm{K}$. Using an infrared free-electron laser, far-infrared reflectivity spectra of a single crystal $y$-cut were acquired along both principal axes, under two different incidence angles, in S- and P-polarization. These experimental data have been fitted globally for each temperature with a multioscillator model, allowing to extract frequencies and damping rates of the ordinary and extraordinary, transverse and longitudinal optic phonon modes, and hence the temperature-dependent dispersion of the infrared dielectric function. The results are in line with previous high-temperature studies, allowing for a parametrized description of all temperature-dependent phonon parameters and the resulting dielectric function from $1.5\ \mathrm{K}$ up to the $α$-$β$-phase transition temperature, $T_C = 846\ \mathrm{K}$. Using these data, we predict remarkably high quality factors for polaritons in $α$-quartz's hyperbolic spectral region at low temperatures.
Crystal quartz is a well-known anisotropic medium with optically active phonons in the THz region where hyperbolic phonon-polaritons can be excited. Here, we use this material to illustrate how the behavior of bulk and surface hyperbolic polaritons can be drastically modified by changing the orientation of the crystal's anisotropy axis with respect to its surface. We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, phenomena associated with the orientation of hyperbolic media. We show the consequences of slight changes in the crystal's orientation in various ways, from the creation of hyper…
Tuning the macroscopic dielectric response on demand holds potential for actively tunable metaphotonics and optical devices. In recent years, graphene has been extensively investigated as a tunable element in nanophotonics. Significant theoretical work has been devoted on the tuning the hyperbolic properties of graphene/dielectric heterostructures, however, until now, such a motif has not been demonstrated experimentally. Here we focus on a graphene/polaritonic dielectric metamaterial, with strong optical resonances arising from the polar response of the dielectric, which are, in general, diff…
Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are generated when infrared photons couple to polar optic phonons in anisotropic media, confining long-wavelength light to nanoscale volumes. However, to realize the full potential of HPhPs for infrared optics, it is crucial to understand propagation and loss mechanisms on substrates suitable for applications from waveguiding to infrared sensing. In this paper, we employ scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and nano-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, in concert with analytical and numerical calculations, to elucidate …
Three properties of the dielectric relaxation in ultra-pure single crystalline H$_{2}$O ice Ih were probed at temperatures between 80-250 K; the thermally stimulated depolarization current, static electrical conductivity, and dielectric relaxation time. The measurements were made with a guarded parallel-plate capacitor constructed of fused quartz with Au electrodes. The data agree with relaxation-based models and provide for the determination of activation energies, which suggest that relaxation in ice is dominated by Bjerrum defects below 140 K. Furthermore, anisotropy in the dielectric relax…
Complex Permittivity Measurements at Variable Temperatures of Low Loss Dielectric Substrates Employing Split Post and Single Post Dielectric Resonators
We reconsider the long-explored problem that the magnitude of the measured Casimir force between an Au sphere and an indium tin oxide (ITO) film decreases significantly with no respective changes in the ITO dielectric permittivity required by the Lifshitz theory. Two plausible resolutions of this conundrum are discussed: the phase transition of an ITO film from metallic to dielectric state and the modification of a film surface under the action of UV light. To exclude the latter option, we propose an improvement in the experimental scheme by adding a graphene sheet on top of an ITO film. The f…

Hyperbolic polariton modes are highly appealing for a broad range of applications in nanophotonics, including surfaced enhanced sensing, sub-diffractional imaging and reconfigurable metasurfaces. Here we show that attenuated total reflectance micro-spectroscopy (ATR) using standard spectroscopic tools can launch hyperbolic polaritons in a Kretschmann-Raether configuration. We measure multiple hyperbolic and dielectric modes within the naturally hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride as a function of different isotopic enrichments and flake thickness. This overcomes the technical challenge…
Metasurfaces offer the potential to control light propagation at the nanoscale for applications in both free-space and surface-confined geometries. Existing metasurfaces frequently utilize metallic polaritonic elements with high absorption losses, and/or fixed geometrical designs that serve a single function. Here we overcome these limitations by demonstrating a reconfigurable hyperbolic metasurface comprising of a heterostructure of isotopically enriched hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in direct contact with the phase-change material (PCM) vanadium dioxide (VO2). Spatially localized metallic an…
We report on the optical and physical characterization of metallic nanowire (NW) metamaterials fabricated by electrodeposition of ~30 nm diameter gold nanowires in nano-porous anodic aluminum oxide. We observe a uniaxial anisotropic dielectric response for the NW metamaterials that displays both epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) resonances. We show that a fundamental difference in the behavior of NW-metamaterials from metal-dielectric multilayer (ML) metamaterials is the differing directions of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) dielectric responses relat…
Hyperbolic metamaterials create artificial optical anisotropy using metallic wires suspended in a dielectric medium, or alternating layers of a metal and dielectric. Here we fabricated ZnO/Al:ZnO (AZO) multilayers by the RF magnetron sputtering deposition technique. Our fabricated multilayers satisfy the conditions required for a type I hyperbolic metamaterial. The optical response of individual AZO and ZnO films, as well as the multilayered film were investigated via angular transmittance and spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements. The optical response of the multilayered system is predicted…
Metals are canonical plasmonic media at infrared and optical wavelengths, allowing one to guide and manipulate light at the nano-scale. A special form of optical waveguiding is afforded by highly anisotropic crystals revealing the opposite signs of the dielectric functions along orthogonal directions. These media are classified as hyperbolic and include crystalline insulators, semiconductors and artificial metamaterials. Layered anisotropic metals are also anticipated to support hyperbolic waveguiding. Yet this behavior remains elusive, primarily because interband losses arrest the propagation…
Hyperbolic polaritons exhibit large photonic density of states and can be collimated in certain propagation directions. The majority of hyperbolic polaritons are sustained in man-made metamaterials. However, natural-occurring hyperbolic materials also exist. Particularly, natural in-plane hyperbolic polaritons in layered materials have been demonstrated in MoO3 and WTe2, which are based on phonon and plasmon resonances respectively. Here, by determining the anisotropic optical conductivity (dielectric function) through optical spectroscopy, we predict that monolayer black phosphorus naturally …
We develop a fundamental theory of the long-range electrostatic interactions in two-dimensional crystals by performing a rigorous study of the nonanalyticities of the Coulomb kernel. We find that the dielectric functions are best represented by $2\times 2$ matrices, with nonuniform macroscopic potentials that are two-component hyperbolic functions of the out-of-plane coordinate, $z$. We demonstrate our arguments by deriving the long-range interatomic forces in the adiabatic regime, where we identify a formerly overlooked dipolar coupling involving the out-of-plane components of the dynamical c…
We use a combined generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory approach to determine and analyze the anisotropic dielectric functions of an $α$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ thin film. The sample is grown epitaxially by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on $m$-plane sapphire. Generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry data from multiple sample azimuths in the spectral range from 0.73 eV to 8.75 eV are simultaneously analyzed. Density functional theory is used to calculate the valence and conduction band structure. We identify, for the indirect-bandgap material, two direct band-to-band t…
We use scanning near-field optical microscopy to study the response of hexagonal boron nitride nanocones at infrared frequencies, where this material behaves as a hyperbolic medium. The obtained images are dominated by a series of hot rings that occur on the sloped sidewalls of the nanocones. The ring positions depend on the incident laser frequency and the nanocone shape. Both dependences are consistent with directional propagation of hyperbolic phonon polariton rays that are launched at the edges and zigzag through the interior of the nanocones, sustaining multiple internal reflections off t…
