When a plane wave is launched from a plane surface in a linear, homogenous, dielectric-magnetic, uniaxial medium, we show that its phase velocity and the energy-transport velocity vectors can be counterposed (i.e., lie on different sides of the surface normal) under certain circumstances.
In this overview paper, we investigate the dispersion of electromagnetic waves for dissipative and non-dissipative dielectric-magnetic uniaxial mediums. Changing the sign of one component of dielectric permittivity (ε) or magnetic permeability (μ) from positive to negative will lead to sixteen different cases (real or imaginary) for a non-dissipative medium and eight different cases for dissipative one. In a non-dissipative medium, dispersion relations follow the elliptic/hyperbolic relations. This rule completely vanishes regarding the dissipative medium. While the number of dispersion cases …
In this article, we demonstrate experimentally and verified numerically the excitation of Berreman modes that propagate in a dielectric film of uniaxial anisotropic nanoporous alumina grown on an aluminium substrate. It is an air-dielectric-metal asymmetric polaritonic system with a real part of the effective permittivity having a value near zero. The modes are excited at a wavelength lower than the epsilon near zero wavelength region. Minimum reflection is observed for the mid-infrared p-polarized light, while maximum reflection is observed for the s-polarized light. The experimental results …
The propagation of Dyakonov surface waves guided by the planar interface of (i) an isotropic dielectric material and (ii) a homogenized uniaxial dielectric composite material comprising both passive and active component materials was theoretically investigated, under the assumption that the optic axis of the uniaxial partnering material lies wholly in the interface plane. For a certain range of the volume fraction of the active component material, the uniaxial partnering material is neither wholly dissipative nor wholly active and the Dyakonov surface waves propagating in certain directions am…
Electromagnetic surface waves supported by an isotropic chiral material were investigated via the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Specifically, two scenarios were considered: surface waves guided by the planar interface of an isotropic chiral material and (a) an isotropic dielectric material and (b) a uniaxial dielectric (or plasmonic) material. Both plasmonic and non-plasmonic achiral partnering materials were investigated. In scenario (a) surface waves akin to surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves were excited, while in scenario (b) surface waves akin to Dyakonov waves and akin …
We report the prediction of a new type of Dyakonov surface waves that propagate along the flat strip of the interface between two dielectrics with negative anisotropy. It is shown that the surface waves condition is satisfied for negatively anisotropic dielectrics due to specific boundaries of the strip waveguide confined between two metallic plates. Such modes are studied by the perturbation theory in the approximation of weak anisotropy. The existence of Dyakonov surface waves in negative uniaxial crystals motivates us to reconsider the list of materials suitable for their practical implemen…
In this article, we propose and numerically analyze an all dielectric biaxial metamaterial [ADBM] constructed by multilayer pattering of a sub-wavelength ridge array of Silicon and a flat SiO2 layer. The proposed ADBM can support Dyakonov Surface Waves [DSWs] with infinite propagation length which can propagate in a wide angular domain. Though natural uniaxial and biaxial materials and also nanowire all dielectric metamaterials can also support DSWs, the angular existence domain [AED] is limited to a very narrow range. Our proposed ADBM can support can overcome this limitation and it can achie…
The linear birefringence of uniaxial crystal plates is known since the 17th century, and it is widely used in numerous optical setups and devices. Here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, a fine lateral circular birefringence of such crystal plates. This effect is a novel example of the spin-Hall effect of light, i.e., a transverse spin-dependent shift of the paraxial light beam transmitted through the plate. The well-known linear birefringence and the new circular birefringence form an interesting analogy with the Goos-Hänchen and Imbert-Fedorov beam shifts that appear in t…
We investigate electromagnetic propagation in uniaxial dielectrics with a transversely varying orientation of the optic axis, the latter staying orthogonal everywhere to the propagation direction. In such a geometry, the field experiences no refractive index gradients, yet it acquires a transversely-modulated Pancharatnam-Berry phase, that is, a geometric phase originating from a spin-orbit interaction. We show that the periodic evolution of the geometric phase versus propagation gives rise to a longitudinally-invariant effective potential. In certain configurations, this geometric phase can p…
We theoretically study Dyakonov surface waveguide modes that propagate along the planar strip interfacial waveguide between two uniaxial dielectrics. We demonstrate that due to the one-dimensional electromagnetic confinement, Dyakonov surface waveguide modes can propagate in the directions that are forbidden for the classical Dyakonov surface waves at the infinite interface. We show that this situation is similar to a waveguide effect and formulate the resonance conditions at which Dyakonov surface waveguide modes exist. We demonstrate that the propagation of such modes without losses is possi…
Optical properties of nanoparticles attract continuous attention owing to their high fundamental and applied importance across many disciplines. Recently emerged field of all-dielectric nanophotonics employs optically induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances in dielectric nanoparticles with a high refractive index. This property allows obtaining additional valuable degrees of freedom to control optical responses of nanophotonic structures. Here we propose a conceptually distinct approach towards reaching optical resonances in dielectric nanoparticles. We show that lacking conventional Mie …
The theory of surface electromagnetic waves (SEMWs) propagating at optical frequencies along the interface of an isotropic noble metal [e.g., gold (Au)] and a uniaxial crystal [e.g., Rutile (TiO$_2$)] is revisited with the Drude-Lorentz (DL) model for the complex dielectric material permittivity $(ε_p)$. The latter accounts for the contributions of both the \textit{intraband} transitions of the free electrons and the multiple \textit{interband} transitions of the bound electrons in metals. The propagation characteristics of the wave vectors and wave frequency of SEMWs, the hybridization factor…
Dyakonov-Voigt (DV) surface waves guided by the planar interface of (i) material $A$ which is a uniaxial dielectric material specified by a relative permittivity dyadic with eigenvalues $ε^s_A$ and $ε^t_A$, and (ii) material $B$ which is an isotropic dielectric material with relative permittivity $ε_B$, were numerically investigated by solving the corresponding canonical boundary-value problem. The two partnering materials are generally dissipative, with the optic axis of material $A$ being inclined at the angle $χ\in [ 0^\circ, 90^\circ ]$ relative to the interface plane. No solutions of the …
The propagation of Dyakonov-Tamm (DT) surface waves guided by the planar interface of two nondissipative materials $A$ and $B$ was investigated theoretically and numerically, via the corresponding canonical boundary-value problem. Material $A$ is a homogeneous uniaxial dielectric material whose optic axis lies at an angle $χ$ relative to the interface plane. Material $B$ is an isotropic dielectric material that is periodically nonhomogeneous in the direction normal to the interface. The special case was considered in which the propagation matrix for material $A$ is non-diagonalizable because t…
The canonical boundary-value problem for surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves guided by the planar interface of a dielectric material and a plasmonic material was solved for cases wherein either partnering material could be a uniaxial material with optic axis lying in the interface plane.Numerical studies revealed that two different SPP waves, with different phase speeds, propagation lengths, and penetration depths, can propagate in a given direction in the interface plane; in contrast, the planar interface of isotropic partnering materials supports only one SPP wave for each propagation dire…
