We theoretically study Dyakonov surface waveguide modes that propagate along the planar strip interfacial waveguide between two uniaxial dielectrics. We demonstrate that due to the one-dimensional electromagnetic confinement, Dyakonov surface waveguide modes can propagate in the directions that are forbidden for the classical Dyakonov surface waves at the infinite interface. We show that this situation is similar to a waveguide effect and formulate the resonance conditions at which Dyakonov surface waveguide modes exist. We demonstrate that the propagation of such modes without losses is possible. We also consider a case of two-dimensional confinement, where the interface between two anisotropic dielectrics is bounded in both orthogonal directions. We show that such a structure supports Dyakonov surface cavity modes. Analytical results are confirmed by comparing with full-wave solutions of Maxwell's equations. We believe that our work paves the way towards new insights in the field of surface waves in anisotropic media.
We study Dyakonov surface waveguide modes in a waveguide represented by an interface of two anisotropic media confined between two air half-spaces. We analyze such modes in terms of perturbation theory in the approximation of weak anisotropy. We show that in contrast to conventional Dyakonov surface waves that decay monotonically with distance from the interface, Dyakonov waveguide modes can have local maxima of the field intensity away from the interface. We confirm our analytical results by comparing them with full-wave electromagnetic simulations. We believe that this work can bring new ide…
Dyakonov surface waves are a well-known example of surface electromagnetic waves propagating along a plane interface between isotropic and anisotropic dielectric media. Here, we investigate the spectrum and radiative losses of Dyakonov waves at the curved interface considering both cases of "positive" and "negative" curvature of anisotropic medium. We demonstrate how Dyakonov waves at a plane interface continuously transform to the leaky or guided modes of an anisotropic cylindrical waveguide and simple derive asymptotic equation for radiative losses. All analytical results are confirmed by so…
We report the prediction of a new type of Dyakonov surface waves that propagate along the flat strip of the interface between two dielectrics with negative anisotropy. It is shown that the surface waves condition is satisfied for negatively anisotropic dielectrics due to specific boundaries of the strip waveguide confined between two metallic plates. Such modes are studied by the perturbation theory in the approximation of weak anisotropy. The existence of Dyakonov surface waves in negative uniaxial crystals motivates us to reconsider the list of materials suitable for their practical implemen…
The equations for the effective medium refractive index and for the confinement factor in the waveguide design for quantum cascade lasers are derived.Compared to equations used in prior literature, by applying rigorous perturbation theory and including the effect of the anisotropic optical gain and non-Hermitian properties of the waveguide structure and materials, a few percent correction should be made to the confinement factor and the effective gain. This result can easily be generalized to any optical devices with a layered structure.
Flexible control of the modal confinement in silicon photonic waveguides is an appealing feature for many applications, including sensing and hybrid integration of active materials. In most cases, strip waveguides are the preferred solution to maximize the light interaction with the waveguide surroundings. However, the only two degrees of freedom in Si strip waveguides are the width and thickness, resulting in limited flexibility in evanescent field control. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy that exploits metamaterial engineering of the waveguide core and cladding to control the …
To fulfil both size and power requirements for future photonic integrated circuits, an effective approach is to miniaturize photonic components. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is one of the most promising candidates for subwavelength mode confinement, however, structures based on SPP are subject to inevitable high propagation loss. Here, we report an all-dielectric bowtie (ADB) waveguide consisting of two identical silicon wedges embedded in a silica cladding with a nanoscale gap. Because of successive slot and antislot effects, the gap behaves as a 'capacitor-like' energy storage that makes …
In recent years, extraordinary spin angular momenta have been investigated in a variety of structured electromagnetic waves, being of especial interest in sub-wavelength evanescent fields. Here we demonstrate analytically that, in planar and cylindrical waveguides supporting transverse electric/magnetic modes, transverse spin density arises inside the waveguide (different from the spin induced in the evanescent region outside the waveguide), carrying indeed longitudinal extraordinary (so-called) Belinfante's spin momentum. Such contribution depends linearly on the mode transverse wave vector, …
The extremely local electric field enhancement and light confinement is demonstrated in dielectric waveguide with corner and gap geometry. The numerical results reveal the local electric field enhancement in the vicinity of the apex of fan-shaped waveguide. Classical electromagnetic theory predicts that the field enhancement and confinement abilities increase with decreasing radius of rounded corner ($r$) and gap ($g$), and show singularity for infinitesimal $r$ and $g$. For practical parameters with $r=g=10\,\mathrm{nm}$, the mode area of opposing apex-to-apex fan-shaped waveguides can be as …
There has been increasing interest in making the photonic devices more and more compact in the integrated photonics industry, and one of the important questions for manufacturers and design engineers is how to quantify the effect of the finite cladding thickness on the modal confinement loss of photonic waveguides. This requires at least six to seven digits accuracy for the computation of propagation constant $β$ since the modal confinement loss is proportional to the imaginary part of $β$ that is six to seven orders of magnitude smaller than its real part by the industrial standard. In this p…
In this paper we present a novel fabrication technique for silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides with a thickness of up to 900 nm, which are suitable for nonlinear optical applications. The fabrication method is based on etching trenches in thermally oxidized silicon and filling the trenches with Si3N4. Using this technique no stress-induced cracks in the Si3N4 layer were observed resulting in a high yield of devices on the wafer. The propagation losses of the obtained waveguides were measured to be as low as 0.4 dB/cm at a wavelength of around 1550 nm.
We examine the effect of acoustic mode confinement on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in optical waveguides that consist of a guiding core embedded in a solid substrate. We find that SBS can arise due to coupling to acoustic modes in three different regimes. First, the acoustic modes may be guided by total internal reflection; in this case the SBS gain depends directly on the degree of confinement of the acoustic mode in the core, which is in turn determined by the acoustic V-parameter. Second, the acoustic modes may be leaky, but may nevertheless have a sufficiently long lifetime to have a la…
Compact and low-loss photonic crystal waveguides are critical in integrated terahertz (THz) applications. Compared with pure metal or dielectric photonic crystal waveguides, hybrid (metal-dielectric) integrated waveguides provide a simple way to further improve the field confinement and the propagation loss. In this work, we investigate a hybrid waveguide consisting of metallic photonic crystals and dielectric films in 0.1-1.0 THz. Photonic crystal waveguides based on metal pillar arrays (MPAs) support two resonance modes including the fundamental and high-order transverse magnetic (TM) modes …
A fundamental trade-off relation between the cross sectional confinement and propagation length of an arbitrary mode of a general waveguide is presented. This limit is a generalization of the well-known diffraction limit for guided modes. The results provide a lower bound on propagation loss of plasmonic waveguides which are attractive for their deep subwavelength mode dimensions. We also introduce a material loss merit factor that sets a criterion for comparing different plasmonic materials for achieving the best trade-off between confinement and loss.
Recently we proposed a paradigm shift in light confinement strategy showing how relaxed total internal reflection and photonic skin-depth engineering can lead to sub-diffraction waveguides without metal (S. Jahani and Z. Jacob, "Transparent sub-diffraction optics: nanoscale light confinement without metal," Optica 1, 96-100 (2014)). Here, we show that such extreme-skin-depth (e-skid) waveguides can counter-intuitively confine light better than the best-case all-dielectric design of high index silicon waveguides surrounded by vacuum. We also analytically establish that figures of merit related …
Surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), evanescent modes supported by media with negative permittivity, are a fundamental building block of nanophotonics. These modes are unmatched in terms of field enhancement and spatial confinement, and dynamical all-optical control can be achieved e.g. by employing phase-change materials (PCMs). However, the excitation of surface polaritons in planar structures is intrinsically limited to p-polarization. On the contrary, waveguide modes in high-permittivity films can couple to both p- and s-polarized light, and in thin films,…
We describe a hybrid lithium niobate (LN) / silicon (Si) optical waveguiding platform at near infrared wavelengths. Various optical circuit elements, such as waveguides, bends, and couplers are demonstrated in two hybrid cross sections, A and B, with different LN confinement factors (32% and 90%, respectively) of the fundamental quasi TE mode. Such a large LN confinement factor is achieved with adiabatic tapers that preserve the symmetry of the fundamental quasi TE mode and prevent mode rotation. We find the average propagation loss in cross section B to be 4.3 dB/cm with a standard deviation …
A method for the substantial reduction of propagation loss of surface plasmons was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The method is based on the fact that the propagation loss of the surface plasmons depends significantly on the optical confinement of the plasmon. A plasmonic structure, which contains a metal and two dielectric layers of different refractive indexes, is proposed in order to optimize optical confinement and to reduce propagation loss of the surface plasmons. A low propagation loss of 0.17 dB/um for a surface plasmon in a Fe/MgO/AlGaAs plasmonic structure was achieved. A …

Conventional optical lenses have been used to focus light from outside without disturbing the medium. The focused spot size is proportional to the focal distance in a conventional lens, resulting in a tradeoff between depth of penetration in the target medium and spatial resolution. We have shown that virtual ultrasonically sculpted gradient-index (GRIN) optical waveguides can be formed in the target medium to guide and steer light without disturbing the medium. Here, we demonstrate that such virtual waveguides can relay an externally focused beam of light through the medium beyond the focal d…
We consider $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric ring-like arrays of optical waveguides with purely nonlinear gain and loss. Regardless of the value of the gain-loss coefficient, these systems are protected from spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking. If the nonhermitian part of the array matrix has cross-compensating structure, the total power in such a system remains bounded -- or even constant -- at all times. We identify two-, three-, and four-waveguide arrays with cross-compensatory nonlinear gain and loss that constitute completely integrable Hamiltonian systems.
Total internal reflection (TIR) is a ubiquitous phenomenon used in photonic devices ranging from waveguides and resonators to lasers and optical sensors. Controlling this phenomenon and light confinement are keys to the future integration of nanoelectronics and nanophotonics on the same silicon platform. We introduced the concept of relaxed total internal reflection in 2014 to control evanescent waves generated during TIR. These unchecked evanescent waves are the fundamental reason photonic devices are inevitably diffraction-limited and cannot be miniaturized. Our key design concept is the eng…
We propose a class of waveguides operating near cutoff such that electromagnetic energy is mainly bound to the cladding rather than the dielectric core to achieve subdiffraction confinement of light. The cladding incorporates an alternating stack of thin films that exhibit uniaxial form birefringence with a high contrast between the effective principal dielectric constants. In contrast to conventional dielectric waveguides, the effective modal length for the fundamental mode of the proposed waveguide diverges at a much slower rate for core thicknesses less than a twentieth of the illumination …
Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides, as an emerging technology, have proven to offer a promising platform for integrated optics, due to their strong optical confinement comparable to silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguides, while possessing the versatile properties of lithium niobate, such as high electro-optic coefficients. In this paper, we show that mode hybridization, a phenomenon widely found in vertically asymmetric waveguides, can be efficiently modulated in an LNOI ridge waveguide by electro-optic effect, leading to a polarization mode converter with 97% efficiency. Moreover, …
Metamaterials, which are materials engineered to possess novel optical properties, have been increasingly studied. The ability to fabricate metamaterials has sparked an interest in determining possible applications. We investigate using a metamaterial for boundary engineering in waveguides. A metamaterial-clad cylindrical waveguide is used to provide confinement for an optical signal, thereby increasing the local electromagnetic energy density. We show that metamaterial-clad waveguides have unique optical properties, including new modes, which we call hybrid modes. These modes have properties …
In this paper we report suspended silicon waveguides operating at a wavelength of 7.67 mm with a propagation loss of 3.1 ? 0.3 dB/cm. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of low loss silicon waveguides at such a long wavelength, with loss comparable to other platforms that use more exotic materials. The suspended Si waveguide core is supported by a subwavelength grating that provides lateral optical confinement, while also allowing access to the buried oxide layer so that it can be wet etched using hydrofluoric acid. We also demonstrate low loss waveguide bends and s-bends.
High-refractive-index semiconductor optical waveguides form the basis for modern photonic integrated circuits (PICs) , but the conventional methods of achieving optical confinement require a thick lower-refractive-index support layer that impedes large-scale co-integration with electronics. To address this challenge, we present a general architecture for single-mode waveguides that confine light in a high-refractive-index material on a native substrate. Our waveguide consists of a high-aspect-ratio fin of the guiding material surrounded by lower-refractive-index dielectrics and is compatible w…
We show, via simulations, that an optical fiber taper waveguide can be an efficient tool for photoluminescence and resonant, extinction spectroscopy of single emitters, such as molecules or colloidal quantum dots, deposited on the surface of a thin dielectric membrane. Placed over a high refractive index membrane, a tapered fiber waveguide induces the formation of hybrid mode waves, akin to dielectric slotted waveguide modes, that provide strong field confinement in the low index gap region. The availability of such gap-confined waves yields potentially high spontaneous emission enhancement fa…
Tightly confined plasmon waveguide modes supported by semicircular cross section top silver nanoridges are investigated in this paper. Mode field profiles, dispersion curves, propagation distances, confinement factors, and figure-of-merits of semicircular top silver nanoridge plasmon waveguide mode are calculated for different radii of curvature at different wavelengths. It is found that semicircular top silver nanoridges support tightly confined quasi-TEM plasmon waveguide modes. Semicircular top silver nanoridge mode has longer propagation distance and higher figure-of-merit than that of the…
We present a novel wave equation for linearized plasmonic response, obtained by combining the coupled real-space differential equations for the electric field and current density. Nonlocal dynamics are fully accounted for, and the formulation is very well suited for numerical implementation, allowing us to study waveguides with subnanometer cross-sections exhibiting extreme light confinement. We show that groove and wedge waveguides have a fundamental lower limit in their mode confinement, only captured by the nonlocal theory. The limitation translates into an upper limit for the corresponding…
We propose a new approach to provide wideband multi-mode four-wave mixing, independent of the intrinsic waveguide dispersion. We adopt concepts from quantum mechanics and sub-wavelength engineering to design an effective photon well, with a graded potential along the waveguide cross section, that provides flexible control over the mode confinement. The self-adaptive nature of the waveguide boundary allows different spatial modes with equi-spaced frequencies and shared propagation wavevector, automatically fulfilling both, energy conservation and wavevector phase matching conditions. One terahertz (THz) waveguide based on 3D printed metallic photonic crystals is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in 0.1-0.6 THz, which consists of periodic metal rod arrays (MRAs). Results demonstrated that such waveguide supports two waveguide modes such as fundamental and high-order TM-modes. The high-order TM-mode shows high field confinement, and it is sensitive to the geometry changes. By tuning the metal rod interspace, the spectral positions, bandwidths, and transmittances of the high-frequency band can be optimized. The investigation shows that a mode conversion between high…
We propose and design the high confinement InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y semiconductor waveguides and report the results of effective wavelength conversion based on this platform. Efficient confinement and mode field area fluctuation at different wavelength is analyzed to achieve the high nonlinear coefficient. The numerical results show that nearly zero phase-mismatch condition can be satisfied through dispersion tailoring of InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y waveguides, and the wavelength conversion ranging over 40 nm with the maximum conversion efficiency -26.3 dB is achieved for fixing pump power 100 mW. Ultra-compact, densely integrated optical components manufactured on a CMOS-foundry platform are highly desirable for optical information processing and electronic-photonic co-integration. However, the large spatial extent of evanescent waves arising from nanoscale confinement, ubiquitous in silicon photonic devices, causes significant cross-talk and scattering loss. Here, we demonstrate that anisotropic all-dielectric metamaterials open a new degree of freedom in total internal reflection to shorten the decay length of evanescent waves. We experimentally show the reduction of cross-talk by gr…
For integrated optical devices, realistic utilization of the superior wave-matter interaction offered by plasmonics is typically impeded by optical losses, which increase rapidly with mode volume reduction. Although coupled-mode plasmonic structures has demonstrated effective alleviation of the loss-confinement trade-off, stringent symmetry requirements must be enforced for such reduction to prevail. In this work, we report an asymmetric plasmonic waveguide that is not only capable of guiding subwavelength optical mode with long-range propagation, but is also unrestricted by structural, materi…
On-chip photonic networks have the potential to transmit and route information more efficiently than electronic circuits. Recently, a number of silicon-based optical devices including modulators, buffers, and wavelength converts have been reported. However, a number of technical challenges need to be overcome before these devices can be combined into network-level architectures. In particular, due to the high refractive index contrast between the core and cladding of semiconductor waveguides, nanoscale defects along the waveguide often scatter light into the backward-propagating mode. These re…
Recent theoretical studies of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in nanoscale devices have led to an intense research effort dedicated to the demonstration and application of this nonlinearity in on-chip systems. The key feature of SBS in integrated photonic waveguides is that small, high-contrast waveguides are predicted to experience powerful optical forces on the waveguide boundaries, which are predicted to further boost the SBS gain that is already expected to grow dramatically in such structures because of the higher mode confinement alone. In all recent treatments, the effect of radia…
An integrated optical dipole trap uses two-color (red and blue-detuned) traveling evanescent wave fields for trapping cold neutral atoms. To achieve longitudinal confinement, we propose using an integrated optical waveguide coupler, which provides a potential gradient along the beam propagation direction sufficient to confine atoms. This integrated optical dipole trap can support an atomic ensemble with a large optical depth due to its small mode area. Its quasi-TE0 waveguide mode has an advantage over the HE11 mode of a nanofiber, with little inhomogeneous Zeeman broadening at the trapping re…
Unidirectional wave propagation in nonreciprocal structures enables exciting opportunities to control and enhance wave-matter interactions in extreme ways. Within this context, here we investigate the possibility of using terminated unidirectional plasmonic waveguides to enhance typically weak nonlinear effects by orders of magnitude. We theoretically demonstrate remarkable levels of electric field enhancement and confinement (field hot-spots) when the unidirectional waveguiding structure is terminated with a suitable boundary that fully stops the one-way mode. Such a large field enhancement, …
This work analyzes the spontaneous emission of a single emitter placed near the graphene waveguide formed by two parallel graphene monolayers, with an insulator spacer layer. In this case, the eigenmodes supported by the structure, such as surface plasmon and wave guided modes, provide decay channels for the electric dipole placed close to the waveguide. We calculated the contribution to the decay rate of symmetric and antisymmetric eigenmodes as a function of frequency and the orientation of the emitter. Our results show that the modification of the spontaneous emission due to excitation of g…
We theoretically investigate the interaction of a single quantum dipole with the modes of a fiber-coupled semiconductor waveguide. Through a combination of tight modal confinement and phase-matched evanescent coupling, we predict that approximately 70 % of the dipole's emission can be collected into a single mode optical fiber. Calculations further show that the dipole strongly modifies resonant light transmission through the system, with over an order of magnitude change possible for an appropriate choice of fiber-waveguide coupler geometry.
We discover a new wave localization mechanism in a periodic system without any disorder, which can produce a novel type of perfect flat band and is distinct from the known localization mechanisms, i.e., Anderson localization and flat band lattices. The first example we give is a designed electron waveguide on 2DEG with special periodic confinement potential. Numerical calculations show that, with proper confinement geometry, electrons can be completely localized in an open waveguide. We interpret this flat band localization phenomenon by introducing the concept of self-trapped orbitals. In our…
The suite of highly confined polaritons supported by two-dimensional (2D) materials constitutes a versatile platform for nano-optics, offering the means to channel light on deep-subwavelength scales. Graphene, in particular, has attracted considerable interest due to its ability to support long-lived plasmons that can be actively tuned via electrical gating. While the excellent optoelectronic properties of graphene are widely exploited in plasmonics, its mechanical flexibility remains relatively underexplored in the same context. Here, we present a semi-analytical formalism to describe plasmon…
