High-refractive-index semiconductor optical waveguides form the basis for modern photonic integrated circuits (PICs) , but the conventional methods of achieving optical confinement require a thick lower-refractive-index support layer that impedes large-scale co-integration with electronics. To address this challenge, we present a general architecture for single-mode waveguides that confine light in a high-refractive-index material on a native substrate. Our waveguide consists of a high-aspect-ratio fin of the guiding material surrounded by lower-refractive-index dielectrics and is compatible with standard top-down fabrication techniques. The proposed waveguide geometry removes the need for a buried-oxide-layer in silicon photonics, as well as the InGaAsP layer in InP-based PICs and will allow for photonic integration on emerging material platforms such as diamond and SiC.
The equations for the effective medium refractive index and for the confinement factor in the waveguide design for quantum cascade lasers are derived.Compared to equations used in prior literature, by applying rigorous perturbation theory and including the effect of the anisotropic optical gain and non-Hermitian properties of the waveguide structure and materials, a few percent correction should be made to the confinement factor and the effective gain. This result can easily be generalized to any optical devices with a layered structure.
We demonstrate a metamaterial that cannot be described by a single set of refractive-index and impedance values, even for fixed frequency and polarization. The metamaterial structure is a stack of dissimilar waveguides with subwavelength width and spacing, which guide light at different phase velocities. This multi-refractive-index metamaterial (MRIM) can be viewed as a spatial superposition of multiple homogeneous materials. Using full-wave simulations, we demonstrate several optical components based on MRIMs, including prisms that deflect light to multiple angles, lenses with multiple focal …

This process enables the direct writing of guiding structures in materials, commonlyknown as waveguides, which are the base for optical circuit fabrication. It is our interest to study the main characteristics of the waveguides manufactured by the laser micro-machining technique. Here, an analysis of the resulting refractive index profile has been carried out. Thischaracteristic is essential for the design and simulation of integrated optical circuits. In particular …
In this work the behavior of optical micro-ring resonators, especially when functioning as refractive index sensors, is studied in detail. Two configurations are considered, namely a linear waveguide coupled to a circular one and two linear waveguides coupled to each other through a circular one. The optimum coupling conditions are derived and it is shown that in both cases the condition for the resonant wavelength, i.e. the wavelength at which the transmission spectrum exhibits a dip (peak), is the same and depends only on the geometrical characteristics of the circular waveguide and the effe…
A highly sensitive refractive index sensor based on grating-assisted strip waveguide directional coupler is proposed. The sensor is designed using two coupled asymmetric strip waveguides with a top-loaded grating structure in one of the waveguides. Maximum light couples from one waveguide to the other at the resonance wavelength, and the change in resonance wavelength with the change in refractive index of the medium in the cover region is a measure of the sensitivity. The proposed sensor would be an on-chip device with a high refractive index sensitivity of ~ 104 nm/RIU, and negligible temper…
Mode-division multiplexing offers a promising solution to increase the data capacity for optical communications. Waveguide mode conversion is essential for on-chip mode-division multiplexing. Previously reported mode converters have been limited to the conversion from a fundamental mode to one particular high-order mode. It is challenging to simultaneously satisfy the phase matching conditions during multiple mode conversion processes. Here, we propose a scalable design method that overcomes this limitation and realizes the simultaneous conversion of multiple modes via an all-dielectric two-di…
We have shown that a structure composed of a semiconductor hemicylinder and a dielectric waveguide separated by a thin metal layer permits efficient and easy light control. In such a system, it is possible to ensure matching between TE and TM modes of a low refractive index waveguide with the corresponding whispering gallery modes of the hemicylinder of a higher refractive index, a circumstance that allows one to reduce the resonator sizes to the order of the exciting wavelength in the vacuum still having rather high Q-factor around 2*10^4. Due to pronounced electro-optical properties of the r…
We evaluate the sensing properties of plasmonic waveguide sensors by calculating their resonant transmission spectra in different regions of the non-Hermitian eigenmode space. We elucidate the pitfalls of using modal dispersion calculations in isolation to predict plasmonic sensor performance, which we address by using a simple model accounting for eigenmode excitation and propagation. Our transmission calculations show that resonant wavelength and spectral width crucially depend on the length of the sensing region, so that no single criterion obtained from modal dispersion calculations alone …
A Bragg waveguide-based resonant fluidic sensor operating in THz band is studied. A fused deposition modeling 3D printing technique is employed to fabricate the sensor where the liquid analyte is flowing in the microfluidic channel integrated into the waveguide cladding. The analyte refractive index-dependent resonant defect state supported by the fluidic channel is probed by tracking the resulting absorption dip and phase change of the core-guided mode on waveguide transmission spectra. The proposed fluidic sensor can open new opportunities in applied chemical and biological sensing as it off…
Understanding the physical mechanisms of the refractive index modulation induced by femtosecond laser writing is crucial for tailoring the properties of the resulting optical waveguides. In this work we apply polarized Raman spectroscopy to study the origin of stress-induced waveguides in diamond, produced by femtosecond laser writing. The change in the refractive index induced by the femtosecond laser in the crystal is derived from the measured stress in the waveguides. The results help to explain the waveguide polarization sensitive guiding mechanism, as well as providing a technique for the…
The construction of exactly solvable refractive indices allowing guided TE modes in optical waveguides is investigated within the formalism of Darboux-Crum transformations. We apply the finite-difference algorithm for higher-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain complex-valued refractive indices admitting all-real eigenvalues in their point spectrum. The new refractive indices are such that their imaginary part gives zero if it is integrated over the entire domain of definition. This property, called condition of zero total area, ensures the conservation of optical power so the refr…
We investigate optical (transverse gradient) forces between two high-index dielectric planar waveguides immersed in low-index dielectric fluid media. Complimentary to previous studies, we extend optical forces calculations, in order to take into account a non-vacuum (and non-air) background medium, by using the Minkowski stress tensor formulation; we derived a very simple set of equations in terms of the effective refractive indexes of the waveguide eigenmodes. We also used a normalized version of the dispersion relation method to calculate the optical forces, in order to validate our results …
Despite its attractive features, Congruent-melted Lithium Niobate (CLN) suffers from Photo-Refractive Damage (PRD). This light-induced refractive-index change hampers the use of CLN when high-power densities are in play, a typical regime in integrated optics. The resistance to PRD can be largely improved by doping the lithium-niobate substrates with magnesium oxide. However, the fabrication of waveguides on MgO-doped substrates is not as effective as for CLN: either the resistance to PRD is strongly reduced by the waveguide fabrication process (as it happens in Ti-indiffused waveguides) or the…
We report on femtosecond laser writing of single mode optical waveguides in chalcogenide Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass. A multiscan fabrication process was employed to create waveguides with symmetric single mode guidance and low insertion losses at 800 nm wavelength, compatible with Ti:Sapphire ultrafast lasers. μRaman and X-Ray microanalysis were used to elucidate the origin of the laser-induced refractive index change in GLS. Nonlinear refractive index measurements of the waveguides were performed by finding the optical switching parameters of a directional coupler, demonstrating t…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been extensively studied in various systems since its first proposal in quantum mechanics. Photonic BICs can enable optical mode confinement and provide field enhancement for nonlinear optics, but they have rarely been explored in nonlinear integrated photonic waveguides. Applying BICs in photonic integrated circuits enables low-loss light guidance and routing in low-refractive-index waveguides on high-refractive-index substrates, which is suitable for integrated photonics with nonlinear materials. Here, we report experimental demonstration of second-h…
We present the realization of mid-infrared waveguide by ultrafast laser inscription technique in a chalcogenide glass. Our approach is based on multicore waveguide that consists in an alignment on a mesh of positive refractive index channels placed parallel to each other. Two different meshes are investigated with different refractive index contrasts between the channel and the glass matrix. A detailed analysis of the performances at a wavelength of 4.5 $μ$m shows propagation losses of 0.20 $\pm$ 0.05 dB/cm and coupling efficiencies higher than 60 %.

The reflector comprise aperiodically positioned dielectric cylinders connected with dielectric bridges. The proposed waveguides are fabricated using a 3D stereolithography printer. Optical properties of the fabricated waveguide are investigated numerically using finite element method, as well as experimentally using THz-TDS spectroscopy. The results confirm that proposed waveguides exhibit sizable photonic band gaps (20%) even when relatively low refractive index contrast …
We report on fabrication of tubular optical waveguides buried in ZBLAN glass based on transverse femtosecond laser direct writing. Irradiation in ZBLAN with focused femtosecond laser pulses leads to decrease of refractive index in the modified region. Tubular optical waveguides of variable mode areas are fabricated by forming the four sides of the cladding with slit-shaped femtosecond laser pulses, ensuring single mode waveguiding with a mode field dimension as small as ~ 4 μm.
This work represents a particular application of waveguide fabricated by femtosecond laser micromachining technology. More specifically, we report the development of an optical modulator based on the fabrication of single-mode optical waveguide structures buried in X-cut lithium niobate crystal with the femtosecond laser direct writing method. Here, change in refractive index profile is measured using near field intensity profile measurement method at optimized writing conditions. It has been observed that the change refractive index (Δn) is in the range of 10-4. Finally, the behavior of femto…

In this paper, we employ the properties of metamaterials to tailor the modes of metamaterial-dielectric waveguides operating at optical frequencies. We survey the effect of fishnet metamaterial structural parameters such as the magnetic oscillation strength, magnetic resonance frequency and magnetic damping on the double-negative refractive index frequency region in metamaterials and on the hybrid-modes in slab metamaterial-dielectric waveguides. To identify the robustness of the metamaterials to fluctuations in the metamaterial structural parameters, we investigate the behavior of metamateria…
We propose a method to efficiently pump an excited mode of a multimode optical waveguide starting from a fundamental-mode input by combining Stark-Chirped Rapid Adiabatic Passage (SCRAP) and Supersymmetry (SUSY) transformations. In a two-waveguide set, we implement SCRAP by modulating the core refractive index of one waveguide, which is evanescently coupled to its SUSY partner. SCRAP provides an efficient transfer of light intensity between the modes of different waveguides, while SUSY allows to control which modes are supported. Using both techniques allows to achieve fidelities above 99% for…
The integration density of photonic integrated circuits has been limited by light coupling between waveguides. Traditional approaches to layout the waveguide with high density are based on refractive index engineering to suppress the light coupling between waveguides. However, these methods mostly require sophisticated and sensitive structure design, thus lack universality. Herein, we propose high-density multi-mode-multi-core integrated photonic waveguides by inserting high-loss metal strips between waveguides. We have achieved a 10-spatial-channel multi-mode-multi-core waveguide with total o…
