We investigate optical (transverse gradient) forces between two high-index dielectric planar waveguides immersed in low-index dielectric fluid media. Complimentary to previous studies, we extend optical forces calculations, in order to take into account a non-vacuum (and non-air) background medium, by using the Minkowski stress tensor formulation; we derived a very simple set of equations in terms of the effective refractive indexes of the waveguide eigenmodes. We also used a normalized version of the dispersion relation method to calculate the optical forces, in order to validate our results for different dielectric fluid media. Excellent agreement between the two methods was obtained for all analyzed cases. We show that, due to slot-waveguide effect, the TM modes are more sensitive to changes in the fluid refractive index than the TE ones. Furthermore, the repulsive optical force of the antisymmetric TM1 mode becomes stronger for higher refractive indexes, whereas the attractive force of the symmetric TM0 mode becomes weaker. The methodology and results presented in this work provide a rigorous analysis of nano-optomechanical devices actuated by optical forces in a broader range of materials and applications.
We propose and theoretically verify an efficient mechanism of broadband coupling between incident light and on-chip dielectric slot waveguide by employing a tapered plasmonic nanoantenna. Nanoantenna receives free space radiation and couples it to a dielectric slot waveguide with the efficiency of up to 20% in a broad spectral range, having a small footprint as compared with the currently used narrowband dielectric grating couplers. We argue that the frequency selective properties of such nanoantennas also allow for using them as ultrasmall on-chip multiplexer/demultiplexer devices.
Compact and low-loss photonic crystal waveguides are critical in integrated terahertz (THz) applications. Compared with pure metal or dielectric photonic crystal waveguides, hybrid (metal-dielectric) integrated waveguides provide a simple way to further improve the field confinement and the propagation loss. In this work, we investigate a hybrid waveguide consisting of metallic photonic crystals and dielectric films in 0.1-1.0 THz. Photonic crystal waveguides based on metal pillar arrays (MPAs) support two resonance modes including the fundamental and high-order transverse magnetic (TM) modes …
We study a plasmonic coupler involving backward (TM_01) and forward (HE_11) modes of dielectric waveguides embedded into infinite metal. The simultaneously achievable contradirectional energy flows and codirectional wavevectors in different channels lead to a spectral gap, despite the absence of periodic structures along the waveguide. We demonstrate that a complete spectral gap can be achieved in a symmetric structure composed of four coupled waveguides.
In this Letter we theoretically study a novel approach for soliton-induced supercontinuum generation based on the application of metallic dielectric-coated hollow waveguides. Low loss of such waveguides permits the use of smaller diameters with enhanced dispersion control and enables the generation of two-octave-broad spectra with unprecedentedly high spectral peak power densities up to five orders of magnitude larger than in standard PCFs with high coherence. We also predict that high-power supercontinua in the vacuum ultraviolet can be generated in such waveguides.
Inefficient coupling between dielectric guided mode and plasmon mode has been overlooked in the past. The mechanism in it is essentially different from the conventional coupling between dielectric modes. Based on qualitative theoretical analysis, we proposed two methods to strengthen the coupling between dielectric waveguide modes and exterior plasmon whispering gallery modes. One is using a U-shaped bent waveguide to break the adiabatic mode conversion process, and the other is to render the dielectric mode of higher-order to reach phase matching with plasmon mode. Both the transmission spect…
We perform advanced radiation leakage microscopy of routing dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguiding structures. By direct plane imaging and momentum-space spectroscopy, we analyze the energy transfer between coupled waveguides as a function of gap distance and reveal the momentum distribution of curved geometries. Specifically, we observed a clear degeneracy lift of the effective indices for strongly interacting waveguides in agreement with coupled-mode theory. We use momentum-space representations to discuss the effect of curvature on dielectric-loaded waveguides. The experimental images are …
Motivated by the recent progress in analog computing [Science 343, 160 (2014)], a new approach to perform spatial integration is presented using a dielectric slab waveguide. Our approach is indeed based on the fact that the transmission coefficient of a simple dielectric slab waveguide at its mode excitation angle matches the Green's function of first order integration. Inspired by the mentioned dielectric-based integrator, we further demonstrate its graphene-based counterpart. The latter is not only reconfigurable but also highly miniaturized in contrast to the previously reported designs [Op…
In this paper, super-focusing using radiationless electromagnetic interference is extended to the visible regime. It is shown that the highest-order mode of a specifically designed metal-dielectric waveguide array can provide the rapidly oscillating source field for radiationless interference. Using finite-difference time-domain simulations, an example structure is demonstrated. This structure provides focusing to 0.21 of the optical wavelength at a distance of half the optical wavelength from the source.
In this letter, we propose hybrid metal-dielectric waveguides coupled to 2D materials that provide strong light-matter interaction at THz frequencies. We investigate the properties of the fundamental propagating modes and show that the strength of in-plane electric field components is maximized at the top of the dielectric strip on which the 2D material is deposited. Our simulation predicts 100 % modulation of THz light by tuning the Fermi level of a graphene sheet deposited onto a 1mm-long waveguide. We also show the potential of graphene multilayers coupled to these waveguides for achieving …
Radiative emission from a semi-infinite unflanged circular cylindrical dielectric waveguide or optical fiber is studied for the case of axisymmetric modes of TM polarization on the basis of an iterative scheme. The first step of the scheme leads to approximate values for the reflection coefficients and the electromagnetic fields inside and outside the waveguide. In a numerical example the reflection back into the waveguide is appreciable. Correspondingly the radiation pattern of the outgoing radiation differs appreciably from the lowest order approximation in which reflection is neglected.
We demonstrate the appearance of unexpected reflection resonances in corrugated dielectric waveguides. These are due to the curvature of the boundary. The effect is as strong as the ordinary Bragg resonances, and reduces the transmission through our waveguide by 20%. It is thus of high relevance for the design of optimized waveguiding structures. We validate our analytical predictions based on coupled mode theory by a comparison to numerical simulations.
We present an integrated hybrid semiconductor-dielectric (InP-Si$_3$N$_4$) waveguide laser that generates frequency combs at a wavelength around 1.5 $μ$m with a record-low intrinsic optical linewidth of 34 kHz. This is achieved by extending the cavity photon lifetime using a low-loss dielectric waveguide circuit. In our experimental demonstration, the on-chip, effective optical path length of the laser cavity is extended to 6 cm. The resulting linewidth narrowing shows the high potential of on-chip, highly coherent frequency combs with direct electrical pumping, based on hybrid and heterogeneo…
Radiative emission from an open-ended unflanged planar dielectric waveguide is studied for the case of TM polarization on the basis of an iterative scheme. The first step of the scheme leads to approximate values for the reflection coefficients and electromagnetic fields inside and outside the waveguide. It is shown that for the related problems of reflection from a step potential in one-dimensional quantum mechanics and of Fresnel reflection of an electromagnetic plane wave from a half-space the iterative scheme is in accordance with the exact solution.
We introduce transversely structured all-dielectric waveguides which exploit the vectorial nature of light to achieve extreme sub-wavelength confinement in high index dielectrics, enabling characteristic mode dimensions below $λ_0^2$/1,000 without metals or plasmonics. We also derive the metric of optical concentration and show its convenient usage in characterizing enhanced linear and non-linear interactions at the nanoscale. This work expands the toolbox of nanophotonics and opens the door to new types of ultra-efficient and record performing linear and nonlinear devices with broad applicati…
We study the nonlinear waves propagating in metal slot waveguides with a Kerr-type dielectric core. We develop two independent semi-analytical models to describe the properties of such waveguides. Using those models we compute the dispersion curves for the first ten modes of a nonlinear slot waveguide. For symmetric waveguides we find symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric modes which are grouped in two families. In addition, we study the influence of the slot width on the first symmetric and asymmetric modes, and we show that the dispersion curve of the first asymmetric mode is invariant wi…
In this paper, we design a dielectric-to-plasmonic slot waveguide mode converter based on the hybrid silicon-gold taper. The effects of mode matching, the effective index matching, and the metallic absorption loss on the conversion efficiency are studied. Consequently, a metallic taper-funnel coupler with an overall length of 1.7um is designed to achieve a very high conversion efficiency of 93.3% at 1550 nm. The configuration limitations for not allowing this mode converter to achieve a 100% conversion efficiency are also investigated. Such a high-efficiency converter can provide practical rou…
We theoretically investigate the spontaneous emission process of an optical, dipolar emitter in metal-dielectric-metal slab and slot waveguide structures. We find that both structures exhibit strong off-resonant emission enhancements due to the tight confinement of modes between two metallic plates. The large enhancement of surface plasmon-polariton excitation enables dipole emission to be preferentially coupled into plasmon waveguide modes. These structures find applications in creating nanoscale local light sources or in generating guided single plasmons in integrated optical circuits.
In this paper we report successful transmission of 10 Gbit/s on-off-keying (OOK) modulated signal through the LR-DLSPPWs with almost negligible degradation of the data flow consistency
Utilizing the underlying physics of evanescent wave amplification by a negative-refractive-index slab, it is shown that evanescent waves with specific spatial frequencies can also be amplified without any reflection simply by two dielectric planar waveguides. The simple configuration allows one to take advantage of the high resolution limit of a high-refractive-index material without contact with the object.
We investigate the characteristics of guided wave modes in planar coupled waveguides. In particular, we calculate the dispersion relations for TM modes in which one or both of the guiding layers consists of negative index media (NIM)-where the permittivity and permeability are both negative. We find that the Poynting vector within the NIM waveguide axis can change sign and magnitude, a feature that is reflected in the dispersion curves.
The study of metallic corrugated surfaces has recently received strong attention due to their ability to mimic the behaviour of surface plasmons. In this work, this plasmon-like behaviour is employed to design an open cylindrical waveguide. The structure consists on a longitudinally corrugated metallic cylinder with corrugations filled with a dielectric material. The dispersion relation of this waveguide is analyzed in the Òcontinuous limitÓ, defined as the limit in which the number of corrugations is infinite, but keeping their periodicity constant. It is found that, in this limit, the wavegu…
In this article, a 2D plasmonic waveguide loaded with all dielectric anisotropic metamaterial, consisting of alternative layers of Si-SiO2, has been theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed. Main characteristics of waveguide i.e. propagation constant, propagation length and normalized mode area have been calculated for different values of ridge width and height at telecommunication wavelength. The respective 1D structure of the waveguide has been analytically solved for the anisotropic ridge as a single uniaxial medium with dielectric tensor defined by Effective Medium Theory (EMT). The…
To fulfil both size and power requirements for future photonic integrated circuits, an effective approach is to miniaturize photonic components. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is one of the most promising candidates for subwavelength mode confinement, however, structures based on SPP are subject to inevitable high propagation loss. Here, we report an all-dielectric bowtie (ADB) waveguide consisting of two identical silicon wedges embedded in a silica cladding with a nanoscale gap. Because of successive slot and antislot effects, the gap behaves as a 'capacitor-like' energy storage that makes …
We theoretically characterize the free-carrier plasma dispersion effect in fully-etched silicon waveguides, with various dielectric material claddings, due to fixed and interface charges at the silicon-dielectric interfaces. The values used for these charges are obtained from the measured capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of SiO2, SiNx, and Al2O3 thin films deposited on silicon substrates. The effect of the charges on the properties of silicon waveguides is then calculated using the semiconductor physics tool Silvaco in combination with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method s…
A numerical technique is described that can efficiently compute solutions in interface problems. These are problems with data, such as the coefficients of differential equations, discontinuous or even singular across one or more interfaces. A prime example of these problems are optical waveguides and as such the scheme is applied to Maxwell's equations as they are formulated to describe light confinement in Bragg fibers. It is based on standard finite differences appropriately modified to take into account all possible discontinuities across the waveguide's interfaces due to the change of the …
We investigate bound states in the continuum (BICs) in a planar dielectric waveguide structure consisting of a gold grating on a dielectric layer with a back layer of metal. In this structure, Friedrich-Wintgen (FW) BICs caused by the destructive interference between the radiations from two waveguide modes appear near the anti-crossing point of the dispersion curves. In this study, it is revealed that the branch at which the BIC appears changes according to the polarization of incident radiation. Based on a temporal coupled mode theory, it is shown that the BIC branch is determined by the sign…
The extremely local electric field enhancement and light confinement is demonstrated in dielectric waveguide with corner and gap geometry. The numerical results reveal the local electric field enhancement in the vicinity of the apex of fan-shaped waveguide. Classical electromagnetic theory predicts that the field enhancement and confinement abilities increase with decreasing radius of rounded corner ($r$) and gap ($g$), and show singularity for infinitesimal $r$ and $g$. For practical parameters with $r=g=10\,\mathrm{nm}$, the mode area of opposing apex-to-apex fan-shaped waveguides can be as …
We analyse theoretically for the first time to our knowledge the perfect phase matching of guided TE and TM modes with a multilayer waveguide composed of linear isotropic dielectric materials. Alongside strict investigation into dispersion relations for multilayer systems, we give an explicit qualitative explanation for the phenomenon of mode matching on the basis of the standard one-dimensional homogenization technique, and discuss the minimum number of layers and the refractive index profile for the proposed device scheme. Direct applications of the scheme include polarization-insensitive, i…
We show that waveguides with a dielectric core and a lossy metamaterial cladding (metamaterial-dielectric guides) can support hybrid ordinary-surface modes previously only known for metal-dielectric waveguides. These hybrid modes are potentially useful for frequency filtering applications as sharp changes in field attenuation occur at tailorable frequencies. Our results also show that the surface modes of a metamaterial-dielectric waveguide with comparable electric and magnetic losses can be less lossy than the surface modes of an analogous metal-dielectric waveguide with electric losses alone…
We theoretically investigate the dispersion and polarization properties of the electromagnetic waves in a multi-layered structure composed of a magneto-optic waveguide on dielectric substrate covered by one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal. The numerical analysis of such a complex structure shows polarization filtration of TE- and TM-modes depending on geometrical parameters of the waveguide and photonic crystal. We consider different regimes of the modes propagation inside such a structure: when guiding modes propagate inside the magnetic film and decay in the photonic crystal; when th…
Tuning the near-field using all-dielectric nano-antennae offers a promising approach for trapping atoms, which could enable strong single-atom/photon coupling. Here we report the simulation results of an optical trapping concept, in which a silicon nano-antenna produces a trapping potential for atoms in a chip-scale configuration. Using counter-propagating incident fields, bichromatically detuned from the atomic cesium D-lines, we numerically investigate the dependence of the optical potential on the nano-antenna geometry. We tailor the near-field potential landscape by tuning the evanescent f…
We derive a sufficient condition for the existence of index-guided modes in a very general class of dielectric waveguides, including photonic-crystal fibers (arbitrary periodic claddings, such as ``holey fibers''), anisotropic materials, and waveguides with periodicity along the propagation direction. This condition provides a rigorous guarantee of cutoff-free index-guided modes in any such structure where the core is formed by increasing the index of refraction (e.g. removing a hole). It also provides a weaker guarantee of guidance in cases where the refractive index is increased ``on average…
For the purpose of using plasmonics in an integrated scheme where single emitters can be probed efficiently, we experimentally and theoretically study the scattering properties of single nano-rod gold antennas as well as antenna arrays placed on one-dimensional dielectric silicon nitride waveguides. Using real space and Fourier microscopy correlated with waveguide transmission measurements, we quantify the spectral properties, absolute strength and directivity of scattering. The scattering processes can be well understood in the framework of the physics of dipolar objects placed on a planar la…
We report a novel design of a compact wavelength add-drop multiplexer utilizing dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DLSPPW-based configuration exploits routing properties of directional couplers and filtering abilities of Bragg gratings. We present practical realization of a 20-$μ$m-long device operating at telecom wavelengths that can reroute optical signals separated by approximately 70 nm in the wavelength band. We characterize the performance of the fabricated structures using scanning near-field optical microscopy as well as leakage-radiation microscopy a…
Chiral spectroscopy is a powerful technique that enables to identify the chirality of matter through optical means. So far, experiments to check the chirality of matter or nanostructures have been carried out using free-space propagating light beams. However, for the sake of miniaturization, it would be desirable to perform chiral spectroscopy in photonic integrated platforms, with the additional benefit of massive parallel detection, low-cost production, repeatability, and portability of such a chiroptical device. Here we show that all-dielectric integrated photonic waveguides can support chi…
We consider dielectric cavities whose radiation space is restricted by two parallel metallic planes. The TM solutions of the Maxwell equations of the system are equivalent to the solutions of periodical arrays of dielectric cavities. The system readily allows to achieve bound states in the continuum (BICs) of any type including topological BICs as dependent on position and orientation of the cavities relative to the planes. That extremely facilitates experimental studies in comparison to infinite arrays of the cavities. We show the effect of merging of topologically protected BICs that pushes …
In this paper, the recently proposed technique to produce photonic jets (terajets at THz frequencies) using 3D dielectric cuboids is applied in the design of mesoscale cuboid-chain waveguide. The chains are basically designed with several dielectric cubes with dimensions λ0 along the x, y and z axes placed periodically along the axial z-axis and separated by an air-gap. Based on this, a systematic study of the focusing properties and wave guiding of this chain is performed when the air-gap between the dielectric cubes is changed from 0.25λ0 to 2.5λ0 with the best performance achieved with the …
A splitting of modes in a circular graded-index optical fiber is demonstrated by solving the full Maxwell equations using the perturbation analysis. It is shown that the degeneracy of vortex Laguerre-Gauss modes with distinct orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization (spin) but the same total angular momentum is lifted due to the spin-orbit (vector) and tensor forces. Numerical estimations of group delays of modes in optical fiber and frequency splitting in Fabry-Perot and ring resonators are presented.
The hybrid plasmonic waveguide consists of a high-permittivity dielectric nanofiber embedded in a low-permittivity dielectric near a metal surface. This architecture is considered as one of the most perspective candidates for long-range subwavelength guiding. We present qualitative analysis and numerical results which reveal advantages of the special waveguide design when dielectric constant of the cylinder is greater than the absolute value of the dielectric constant of the metal. In this case the arbitrary subwavelength mode size can be achieved by controlling the gap width. Our qualitative …
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
The fundamental guided dispersion characteristics of guided light in a subwavelength dielectric slit channel embedded by two different plasmonic metals are investigated when varying the gap width. As a result, an overall and salient picture of the guided dispersion characteristics is obtained over a wide spectrum range below and above the plasma frequencies of the two different plasmonic metals, which is important preliminary information for analyzing this type of subwavelength waveguide. In particular, the effects of using two different metals on the guided mode dispersions are emphasized in …
We design compact waveguide couplers via impedance-tunable transformation optics. By tuning impedance coefficients in the original space, two-dimensional metallic and dielectric waveguide couplers are designed with a high efficiency. Through tuning refractive index simultaneously, we find that the transformation medium inside a designed metallic waveguide coupler can be a reduced-parameter material for coupling waves between waveguides with arbitrary different cross sections and embedded media. In the design of dielectric waveguide couplers, we apply two different schemes: one is that both cor…
We propose a class of waveguides operating near cutoff such that electromagnetic energy is mainly bound to the cladding rather than the dielectric core to achieve subdiffraction confinement of light. The cladding incorporates an alternating stack of thin films that exhibit uniaxial form birefringence with a high contrast between the effective principal dielectric constants. In contrast to conventional dielectric waveguides, the effective modal length for the fundamental mode of the proposed waveguide diverges at a much slower rate for core thicknesses less than a twentieth of the illumination …
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) and exceptional points (EPs) have been the subjects of recent intensive research as they exhibit exotic phenomena that are significant for both fundamental physics and practical applications. We investigated the emergence of the Friedrich-Wintgen (FW) type BIC and the EP in a dielectric waveguide comprising a metal grating, focusing on their dependence on the grating thickness. The BIC emerges at a branch near the anti-crossing formed of the two waveguide modes, for a grating of any thickness. With the grating-thickness change, the anti-crossing gap varies …
Terahertz communications is a promising modality for future short-range point-to point wireless data transmission at rates up to terabit per second. A milestone towards this goal is the development of an integrated transmitter and receiver platforms with high efficiency. One key enabling component is a planar waveguiding structure with wide bandwidth and low dispersion. This work proposes substrate-less all-dielectric waveguides cladded by an effective medium for low-loss and low dispersion terahertz transmission in broadband. This self-supporting structure is built solely into a single silico…
We experimentally demonstrate that the next-nearest-neighbor(NNN)coupling in an array of waveguides can naturally be negative. To do so, dielectric zig-zag shaped waveguide arrays are fabricated with direct laser writing (DLW). By changing the angle of the zig-zag shape it is possible to tune between positive and negative ratios of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor coupling, which also allows to reduce the impact of the NNN-coupling to zero at the correct respective angle. We describe how the correct higher order coupling constants in tight-binding models can be derived, based on non-orthogona…
We investigate the diffraction of guided modes of a dielectric slab waveguide on a simple integrated structure consisting of a single dielectric ridge on the surface of the waveguide. Numerical simulations based on aperiodic rigorous coupled-wave analysis demonstrate the existence of sharp resonant features and bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the reflectance and the transmittance spectra occurring at oblique incidence of a TE-polarized guided mode on the ridge. Using the effective index method, we explain the resonances by the excitation of the cross-polarized modes of the ridge. The f…
A set of mode-coupled excitation equations for the slowly-growing amplitudes of dielectric waveguide eigenmodes is derived as a description of the electromagnetic signal field of a high-gain free-electron laser, or FEL, including the effects of longitudinal space-charge. This approach of describing the field basis set has notable advantages for FEL analysis in providing an efficient characterization of eigenmodes, and in allowing a clear connection to free-space propagation of the input (seeding) and output radiation. The formulation describes the entire evolution of the radiation wave through…
The introduction of topology unravels a new chapter of physics. Topological systems provide unique edge/interfacial quantum states which are expected to contribute to the development of novel spintronics and open the door to robust quantum computation. Optical systems can also benefit from topology. Engineering locally in real space a honeycomb photonic crystal with double Dirac cone in its photonic dispersion, topology transition in photonic band structure is induced and a pseudospin unidirectional optical channel is created and demonstrated by the backscattering immune electromagnetic transp…
We show that a very simple structure consisting of a single subwavelength dielectric ridge on the surface of a slab waveguide enables spatial differentiation and integration of the profile of optical beams propagating in the waveguide. The differentiation and integration operations are performed in transmission and in reflection, respectively, at oblique incidence of the beam impinging on the ridge. The implementation of these operations is associated with the resonant excitation of a cross-polarized eigenmode of the ridge. At the considered parameters of the structure and incidence geometry, …
Localized electromagnetic modes and negligible Ohmic losses dictate the growing interest in subwavelength all-dielectric nanoparticles. Although an exhaustive volume of study dealt with interaction of all-dielectric nanostructures with free-space electromagnetic fields, their performance as integrated photonics elements remains untackled. We present an experimental study of optical coupling between a resonant subwavelength silicon nanodisk and a non-resonant silicon waveguide, as probed by third harmonic generation microscopy. By placing the nanodisks at different distances from the waveguide,…
We report a novel approach for on-chip electrical detection of the radiation guided by dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPW) and DLSPPW-based components. The detection is realized by fabricating DLSPPW components on the surface of a gold (Au) pad supported by a silicon (Si) substrate supplied with aluminum pads facilitating electrical connections, with the gold pad being perforated in a specific locations below the DLSPPWs in order to allow a portion of the DLSPPW-guided radiation to leak into the Si-substrate, where it is absorbed and electrically detected. We presen…
Novel hollow-core THz waveguides featuring hyperuniform disordered reflectors are proposed, fabricated, and characterized. The reflector comprise aperiodically positioned dielectric cylinders connected with dielectric bridges. The proposed waveguides are fabricated using a 3D stereolithography printer. Optical properties of the fabricated waveguide are investigated numerically using finite element method, as well as experimentally using THz-TDS spectroscopy. The results confirm that proposed waveguides exhibit sizable photonic band gaps (20%) even when relatively low refractive index contrast …
At a fixed frequency, a general wave field in an open optical waveguide is a sum of finite number of guided modes and an integral of radiation modes. Most studies on open lossless dielectric waveguides are concerned with regular guided modes which are confined around the waveguide core, have a real propagation constant, and propagate along the waveguide axis without attenuation. However, there may be guided modes with a complex propagation constant even though the waveguide consists of lossless isotropic dielectric materials, and they are the so-called complex modes. The complex modes are prop…
Engineering plasmonic metamaterials with anisotropic optical dispersion enables us to tailor the properties of metamaterial-based waveguides. We investigate plasmonic waveguides with dielectric cores and multilayer metal-dielectric claddings with hyperbolic dispersion. Without using any homogenization, we calculate the resonant eigenmodes of the finite-width cladding layers, and find agreement with the resonant features in the dispersion of the cladded waveguides. We show that at the resonant widths, the propagating modes of the waveguides are coupled to the cladding eigenmodes and hence, are …
Surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), evanescent modes supported by media with negative permittivity, are a fundamental building block of nanophotonics. These modes are unmatched in terms of field enhancement and spatial confinement, and dynamical all-optical control can be achieved e.g. by employing phase-change materials (PCMs). However, the excitation of surface polaritons in planar structures is intrinsically limited to p-polarization. On the contrary, waveguide modes in high-permittivity films can couple to both p- and s-polarized light, and in thin films,…
We propose that a weakly-coupled nonlinear dielectric waveguide -- surface-plasmon system can be formulated as a new type of Josephson junction. Such a system can be realized along a metal - dielectric interface where the dielectric medium hosts a nonlinear waveguide (e.g. fiber) for soliton propagation. We demonstrate that the system is in close analogy to the bosonic Josephson-Junction (BJJ) of atomic condensates at very low temperatures, yet exhibits different dynamical features. In particular, the inherently dynamic coupling parameter between soliton and surface-plasmon generates self-trap…
