We propose a new approach to provide wideband multi-mode four-wave mixing, independent of the intrinsic waveguide dispersion. We adopt concepts from quantum mechanics and sub-wavelength engineering to design an effective photon well, with a graded potential along the waveguide cross section, that provides flexible control over the mode confinement. The self-adaptive nature of the waveguide boundary allows different spatial modes with equi-spaced frequencies and shared propagation wavevector, automatically fulfilling both, energy conservation and wavevector phase matching conditions. Capitalizing on this concept, we show phase-matching among modes separated by 400 nm (bridging from telecom wavelengths to almost 2μm), with less than 5% deviation in a remarkably large bandwidth exceeding 300 nm. Furthermore, we also show the flexibility of the proposed approach that can be seamlessly adapted to different technology platforms with the same or different waveguide thicknesses. This strategy opens a new design space for versatile nonlinear applications in which the manipulation of energy spacing and phase matching is pivotal, e.g. all-optical signal processing with four-wave mixing, mid-infrared light generation, Brillouin scattering with selectable phonon energy, etc.

We present an integrated THz spectroscopy and sensing platform featuring low loss, vacuum-like dispersion, and strong field confinement in the fundamental mode. Its performance was characterized experimentally for frequencies between 0.1 THz and 1.5 THz. While linear THz spectroscopy and sensing gain mostly from low loss and an extended interaction length, nonlinear THz spectroscopy would also profit from the field enhancement associated to strong mode confinement. Moreover, the vacuum-like dispersion allows for a reshaping-free propagation of broadband single- to few-cycle pulses in gas-phase…
While functional materials with both light transmitting and electromagnetic shielding are highly desirable, only very few of them meet the stringent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding criteria for optoelectronic systems. Here, a design strategy of shorted micro-waveguides (SMWs) array to decouple the light transmission and EMI shielding is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The array of SMWs, consisting of cut-off metallic micro-waveguides and shorting indium tin oxide (ITO) continuous conductive film, exhibits high optical transmittance of 90.4% and superior EMI shielding eff…

In this paper, we have investigated the interplay between the second and third-order nonlinearities in lithium-niobate waveguides with strong waveguide dispersion using uniform and linearly-chirped poling patterns at input powers in the pico-joule range. We have implemented the accurate unidirectional pulse propagation model to take into account all the possible nonlinear interactions inside these structures. In particular, the poling period has been designed to quasi-phase-match single and multiple sum- and difference-frequency generation processes. We have shown how the poling period can be …
Gallium-nitride (GaN) is a promising material platform for integrated electro-optic devices due to its wide direct bandgap, pronounced nonlinearities and high optical damage threshold. Low-loss ridge waveguides in GaN layers were recently demonstrated. In this work we provide a first report of four-wave mixing in a GaN waveguide at telecommunication wavelengths, and observe comparatively high nonlinear propagation parameters. The nonlinear coefficient of the waveguide is measured as 1.6 +/- 0.45 [W*m]-1, and the corresponding third-order nonlinear parameter of GaN is estimated as 3.4e-18 +/- 1…
The AlGaAs material platform has been intensively used to develop nonlinear photonic devices on-a-chip, thanks to its superior nonlinear optical properties. We propose a new AlGaAs waveguide geometry, called half-core etched, which represents a compromise between two previously studied geometries, namely the nanowire and strip-loaded waveguides, combining their best qualities. We performed tunable four-wave mixing (FWM) experiments in all three of these geometries in the telecommunications C-band (wavelengths around 1550 nm), with a pulsed pump beam and a continuous-wave (CW) signal beam. The …
The ability to exploit the on-chip nonlinear generation of new frequencies has opened the door to a plethora of applications in fundamental and applied physics. Excitation of dispersive waves is a particularly interesting process that allows efficient nonlinear wavelength conversion by phase-matching of a soliton and waves in the normal dispersion regime. However, controlling the wavelength of dispersive waves in integrated waveguides remains an open challenge, hampering versatile shaping of the nonlinear spectral response. Here, we show that metamaterial silicon waveguides release new degrees…
Plasmonic waveguides are an essential element of nanoscale coherent sources, including nanolasers and four-wave mixing (FWM) devices. Here we report how the design of the plasmonic waveguide needs to be guided by the ultimate application. This contrasts with traditional approaches in which the waveguide is considered in isolation. We find that hybrid plasmonic waveguides, with a nonlinear material sandwiched between the metal substrate and a high-index layer, are best suited for FWM applications, whereas metallic wedges are preferred in nanolasers. We also find that in plasmonic nanolasers hig…
We compare phase matching for four-wave mixing using one, two, three, and four waveguide modes. For the comparison, we use numerical optimizations and an estimate of the generated idler power. We present results for few-mode fibers and nano-rib waveguides and show that for both waveguide types, four-wave mixing bandwidths and idler powers are best for one- and two-mode operation and that four-mode four-wave mixing is not feasible at all. Some nano-rib waveguides support three-mode four-wave mixing, albeit with much reduced bandwidth and reduced idler power.
In this work, we investigate the properties of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering in a configuration that employs orthogonally polarized pumps in a birefringent waveguide. This configuration enables a large signal conversion bandwidth, and allows strongly unidirectional frequency conversion as undesired Bragg-scattering processes are suppressed by waveguide birefringence. Moreover, we show that this form of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering preserves the (arbitrary) signal pulse shape, even when driven by pulsed pumps.
In this study, we theoretically and numerically investigate the resonant modes and reflectance of an optical grating consisting of a wavy dielectric slab by applying the spectral element method. The presence of the wavy shape transforms the waveguide modes into leaky resonant modes. A few resonant modes with specific longitudinal wave number have infinitely large Q factor, while the other resonant modes have finite Q factor. For the leaky resonant mode with zero longitudinal wave number, the Q factor is inversely proportional to the amplitude of the wavy shape. An array of multiple low-Q wavy …
Third-order nonlinear processes require phase matching between the interacting fields to achieve high efficiencies. Typically in guided-wave $χ^{(3)}$ platforms this is achieved by engineering the dispersion of the modes through the transverse profile of the device. However, this limits the flexibility of the phase matching that can be achieved. Instead, we analyze four-wave mixing in a pair of asymmetric waveguides and show that phasematching may be achieved in any $χ^{(3)}$ waveguide by coupling of a nondegenerate pump from an adjacent waveguide. We demonstrate the additional flexibility tha…
We report on the study of the third-order nonlinear optical interactions in In$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As$_{y}$P$_{1-y}$/InP strip-loaded waveguides. The material composition and waveguide structures were optimized for enhanced nonlinear optical interactions. We performed self-phase modulation, four-wave mixing and nonlinear absorption measurements at the pump wavelength 1568 nm in our waveguides. The nonlinear phase shift of up to $2.5π$ has been observed in self-phase modulation experiments. The measured value of the two-photon absorption coefficient $α_2$ was 15 cm/GW. The four-wave mixing conversio…
We experimentally demonstrate wide-band (>100 THz) frequency down-conversion of near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser to the mid-infrared (MIR) using four-wave-mixing (FWM) in photonic-chip silicon-nitride waveguides. The engineered dispersion in the nanophotonic geometry, along with the wide transparency range of silicon nitride, enables large-detuning FWM phase-matching and results in tunable MIR from 2.6-3.6 um on a single chip with 100-pJ-scale pump-pulse energies. Additionally, we observe > 20 dB broadband parametric gain for the NIR pulses when the FWM proce…
The generation of non-Abelian geometric phases from a system of evanescently coupled waveguides is extended towards the framework of nonorthogonal coupled-mode theory. Here, we study an experimentally feasible tripod arrangement of waveguides that contain dark states from which a nontrivial U(2)-mixing can be obtained by means of an adiabatic parameter variation. We investigate the influence of higher-order contributions beyond nearest-neighbour coupling as well as self-coupling on the stability of a U(3)-phase generated from an optical tetrapod setup. Our results indicate that, despite the mo…
In this paper, we present a thorough investigation for a spontaneous parametric four-wave mixing process in third-order nonlinear waveguides with various continuous tapering patterns. It has been previously shown that these devices can quasi-phase-match the four-wave-mixing process and enhance its conversion efficiency by orders of magnitude. By altering the tapering profile curve we found that these devices can enable single-photon sources with either narrow or broadband spectral widths at on-demand frequencies. Using our model, we were also able to identify the waveguide length at which the …
We study in detail the scattering of light on a soliton propagating in a waveguide which has been proposed as an experimental system in which one could observe the analogue Hawking effect. When not applying the rotating wave approximation, we show that the linearized wave equation governing perturbations has the same structure as that governing phonon propagation in an atomic Bose condensate. By taking into account the full dispersion relation, we then show that the scattering coefficients encoding the production of photon pairs are amplified by a resonance effect related to the modulation ins…
We designed, fabricated and tested gallium phosphide (GaP) nano-waveguides for second harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate SHG in the visible range around 655 nm using low power continuous-wave pump in the optical communication O-band. Our structures utilize modal phase matching, such that lower order eigenmodes of the pump are phase matched to higher order eigenmodes of the second harmonic. We observe phase matched SHG for different combinations of interacting modes by varying the widths of the waveguides and tuning the wavelength of the pump. The presented results contribute to the deve…
In this article, I show how periodically-tapered waveguides can be employed as efficient quasi-phase-matching schemes for four-wave mixing parametric processes in third-order nonlinear materials. As an example, a thorough study of enhancing third-harmonic generation in sinusoidally-tapered fibres has been conducted. The quasi-phase-matching condition has been obtained for nonlinear parametric interactions in these structures using Fourier-series analysis. The dependencies of the conversion efficiency of the third harmonic on the modulation amplitude, tapering period, longitudinal-propagation d…
Linear discrete diffraction of light within a waveguide array allows control over the longitudinal spatial profile of light. We propose a method of using this control to effectively modulate the nonlinearity in a spontaneous four wave mixing system. This allows the removal spurious frequency correlations between the generated signal and idler photon pairs. Weaving our method into a recipe for waveguide design, we demonstrate a spectral purity improvement from P = 0.78 to near saturation at P = 0.97, for a simple silicon-on-insulator geometry.
In this work, we propose an approach for the design of a waveguide structure that allows for efficient and highly asymmetric coupling of the quantum sources with circularly polarized transition dipole moments to the guided mode of the structure. The approach is based on the mixing of the two quasi-degenerate modes of a periodic waveguide with an auxiliary single-mode waveguide leading to the formation of the dispersion with a stationary inflection point and consequently to the high coupling efficiency of this mode with a dipole source. We show that the distribution of the field polarization in…
Layered 2D graphene oxide (GO) films are integrated with silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides to experimentally demonstrate an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity via four wave mixing (FWM). Owing to the strong light matter interaction between the SiN waveguides and the highly nonlinear GO films, the FWM performance of the hybrid waveguides is significantly improved. SiN waveguides with both uniformly coated and patterned GO films are fabricated based on a transfer free, layer by layer GO coating method together with standard photolithography and lift off processes, yielding precise control of the film thi…
We demonstrate an external cavity laser formed by combining a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit with a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The laser uses an alignment tolerant edge coupler formed by a multi-mode waveguide splitter right at the edge of the silicon nitride chip that relaxes the required alignment to the III-V gain chip and equally splits the power among its two output waveguides. Both the ground and first order mode are excited in the coupler and reach the quadrature condition at the waveguide junction, ensuring equal power to be coupled to both. Two high-quali…
We derive a general theory of linear coupling and Kerr nonlinear coupling between modes of dielectric optical resonators from first principles. The treatment is not specific to a particular geometry or choice of mode basis, and can therefore be used as a foundation for describing any phenomenon resulting from any combination of linear coupling, scattering and Kerr nonlinearity, such as bending and surface roughness losses, geometric backscattering, self- and cross-phase modulation, four-wave mixing, third-harmonic generation and Kerr frequency comb generation. The theory is then applied to a t…
Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are a key component [1] for future telecommunication networks, where demands for greater bandwidth, network flexibility, low energy consumption and cost must all be met. The quest for all optical components has naturally targeted materials with extremely large nonlinearity, including chalcogenide glasses (ChG) [2] and semiconductors, such as silicon [3] and AlGaAs [4]. Yet issues such as immature fabrication technologies for ChG, and high linear and nonlinear losses for semiconductors, motivate the search for other materials. Here we present the first demons…
We evaluate the nonlinear coefficient of graphene-on-silicon waveguides through the coincidence measurement of photon-pairs generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing. We observed the temporal correlation of the photon-pairs from the waveguides over various transfer layouts of graphene sheets. A simple analysis of the experimental results using coupled-wave equations revealed that the atomically-thin graphene sheets enhanced the nonlinearity of silicon waveguides up to ten-fold. The results indicate that the purely $χ^{(3)}$-based effective nonlinear refractive index of graphene is on the orde…
