A composite material comprising randomly distributed spherical particles of two different isotropic dielectric-magnetic materials is homogenized using the second-order strong-property-fluctuation theory in the long-wavelength approximation. Whereas neither of the two constituent materials by itself supports planewave propagation with negative phase velocity (NPV), the homogenized composite material (HCM) can. The propensity of the HCM to support NPV propagation is sensitive to the distributional statistics of the constituent material particles, as characterized by a two--point covariance function and its associated correlation length. The scope for NPV propagation diminishes as the correlation length increases.

Compound surface-plasmon-polariton waves guided by a thin metal layer sandwiched between a homogeneous isotropic dielectric material and a structurally chiral material
Electromagnetic surface waves supported by an isotropic chiral material were investigated via the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Specifically, two scenarios were considered: surface waves guided by the planar interface of an isotropic chiral material and (a) an isotropic dielectric material and (b) a uniaxial dielectric (or plasmonic) material. Both plasmonic and non-plasmonic achiral partnering materials were investigated. In scenario (a) surface waves akin to surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves were excited, while in scenario (b) surface waves akin to Dyakonov waves and akin …
The Lorenz--Mie formulation of electromagnetic scattering by a homogeneous, isotropic, dielectric-magnetic sphere was extended to incorporate topologically insulating surface states characterized by a surface admittance $γ$. Closed-form expressions were derived for the expansion coefficients of the scattered field phasors in terms of those of the incident field phasors. These expansion coefficients were used to obtain analytical expressions for the total scattering, extinction, forward scattering, and backscattering efficiencies of the sphere. Resonances exist for relatively low values of $γ$,…
We report the prediction of a new type of Dyakonov surface waves that propagate along the flat strip of the interface between two dielectrics with negative anisotropy. It is shown that the surface waves condition is satisfied for negatively anisotropic dielectrics due to specific boundaries of the strip waveguide confined between two metallic plates. Such modes are studied by the perturbation theory in the approximation of weak anisotropy. The existence of Dyakonov surface waves in negative uniaxial crystals motivates us to reconsider the list of materials suitable for their practical implemen…
Photonic band structure and effective medium properties of doubly-resonant core-shell metallo-dielectric nanowire arrays: low-loss, isotropic optical negative-index behavior
Motivated by the theoretical observation that isotropic chirality can exist even in completely random systems, we design a dielectric metamaterial consisting of a random colloid of meta-atoms, which exhibits unprecedentedly high isotropic optical activity. Each meta-atom is composed of a helically arranged cluster of silicon nanospheres. Such clusters can be fabricated by large-scale DNA self-assembly techniques. It is demonstrated that the use of a high concentration of the meta-atoms in the colloid provides significant suppressions of incoherent scattering losses. As a result, the proposed s…
Coordinate transformations are a versatile tool to mould the flow of light, enabling a host of astonishing phenomena such as optical cloaking with metamaterials. Moving away from the usual restriction that links isotropic materials with conformal transformations, we show how non-conformal distortions of optical space are intimately connected to the complex refractive index distribution of an isotropic non-Hermitian medium. Remarkably, this insight can be used to circumvent the material requirement of working with refractive indices below unity, which limits the applications of transformation o…
We experimentally demonstrate that the next-nearest-neighbor(NNN)coupling in an array of waveguides can naturally be negative. To do so, dielectric zig-zag shaped waveguide arrays are fabricated with direct laser writing (DLW). By changing the angle of the zig-zag shape it is possible to tune between positive and negative ratios of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor coupling, which also allows to reduce the impact of the NNN-coupling to zero at the correct respective angle. We describe how the correct higher order coupling constants in tight-binding models can be derived, based on non-orthogona…
High-subwavelength-resolution imaging of multilayered structures consisting of alternating negative-permittivty and dielectric layers with flattened transmission curves
We experimentally demonstrate orbiting of isotropic, dielectric microparticles around an optical nanofiber that guides elliptically polarized fundamental modes. The driving transverse radiation force appears in the evanescent electromagnetic fields due to orbital angular momentum. The force direction is opposite to that of the energy flow circulation around the nanofiber. Our results verify the theoretically predicted negative optical torque on a sufficiently large particle in the vicinity of a nanofiber.
An electric field can induce or modify optical birefringence in both the isotropic and nematic phases of liquid crystals (LCs). In the isotropic phase, the electric field induces birefringence with an optical axis along the field. The phenomenon is known as the Kerr effect. In the nematic, the analog of the Kerr effect is the change of existing birefringence through nanosecond electric modification of order parameters (NEMOP) that does not require realignment of the optic axis. The utility of both effects for practical applications is challenged by a relatively weak birefringence induced by th…
Bi-isotropic media constitute a proper scenario for scrutinizing optical effects stemming from magnetoelectric parameters. Chiral magnetic current is a macroscopic effect arising from the chiral magnetic effect that enriches the phenomenology of a classical dielectric medium. This work examines optical aspects of bi-isotropic media in the presence of magnetic conductivity. The full isotropic scenario manifests circular birefringence described by a dispersive rotatory power that changes sign at a given frequency. For a bi-isotropic medium with antisymmetric magnetic conductivity, an intricate d…
We investigate surface modes in plasmonic Bragg fibers composed of nanostructured coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers. We demonstrate that the existence of surface modes is determined by the sign of the spatially averaged permittivity of the plasmonic Bragg fiber, $\bar{% \varepsilon}$. Specifically, localized surface modes occur at the interface between the cylindrical core with $\bar{\varepsilon}<0$ and the outermost uniform dielectric medium, which is similar to the topologically protected plasmonic surface modes at the interface between two different one-dimensional planar met…
We investigate the prospect of achieving negative permittivity and permeability at optical frequencies in a dielectric crystal containing stoichiometric rare-earth ions. We derive the necessary transition linewidth, ion density and electric and magnetic oscillator strengths using a simplified model of non-interacting dipoles. We identify Erbium crystals in a magnetically ordered phase as the most promising material to meet these conditions, and describe initial optical measurements of two potential candidates, \ercl{} and ${}^7$\lierf{}, which display linewidths of 3~GHz and 250~MHz, respectiv…
