The phase velocity of plane waves propagating in an isotropic chiral medium can be simultaneously positive for left-circularly polarized light and negative for right-circularly polarized light(or vice versa). The constitutive parameter regimes supporting this phenomenon are established for nondissipative and dissipative mediums. The boundary between positive and negative phase velocity is characterized by infinite phase velocity.
Bi-isotropic and isotropic negative refractive index (NRI) 3D metamaterials made from periodic arrangements of chiral split ring resonators (SRRs) are proposed and demonstrated. An analytical theory for the characterization and design of these metamaterials is provided and validated by careful full-wave electromagnetic simulations. The reported results are expected to pave the way to the design of practical 3D bi-isotropic and isotropic NRI metamaterials made from a single kind of inclusions.
Investigating the canonical problem of a periodic multilayered stack containing isotropic chiral layers, we homogenized it as a uniaxial bianisotropic medium and derived its effective constitutive parameters. The stack shows a resonant behavior, when its unit cell consists of a metallic layer and an isotropic chiral layer. The presence of isotropic chirality can result in small shifts of the resonance frequency for reasonably large values of the chirality parameter, implying that the sign of an effective permittivity can be switched. Such spectral shifts in the dielectric properties can be pot…
The geometrical interpretation of electromagnetism in transparent media (transformation optics) is extended to include media with isotropic, inhomogeneous, chirality. It is found that such media may be described through introducing the non-Riemannian geometrical property of torsion into the Maxwell equations, and shown how such an interpretation may be applied to the design of optical devices.
Two interpretations of the Bruggeman approach for the homogenization of isotropic chiral mixtures are shown to lead to different results. Whereas the standard interpretation is shown to yield the average-polarizability-density approach, a recent interpretation turns out to deliver a null-excess-polarization approach. The difference between the two interpretations arises from differing treatments of the local field
The electromagnetic field phasors in an isotropic chiral material (ICM) are superpositions of two Beltrami fields of different handedness. Application of the Bruggeman homogenization formalism to two-component composite materials delivers ICMs wherein Beltrami fields of one handedness attenuate whereas Beltrami waves of the other handedness amplify. One component material is a dissipative ICM, the other an active dielectric material.
The propagation of plane waves in an isotropic chiral medium (ICM) is investigated. Simple conditions are derived--in terms of the constitutive parameters of the ICM--for the phase velocity to be directed opposite to the direction of power flow. It is demonstrated that phase velocity and power flow may be oppositely directed provided that the magnetoelectric coupling is sufficiently strong.
Electromagnetic surface waves supported by an isotropic chiral material were investigated via the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Specifically, two scenarios were considered: surface waves guided by the planar interface of an isotropic chiral material and (a) an isotropic dielectric material and (b) a uniaxial dielectric (or plasmonic) material. Both plasmonic and non-plasmonic achiral partnering materials were investigated. In scenario (a) surface waves akin to surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves were excited, while in scenario (b) surface waves akin to Dyakonov waves and akin …
A medium which is an isotropic chiral medium from the perspective of a co-moving observer is a Faraday chiral medium (FCM) from the perspective of a non-co-moving observer. The Tellegen constitutive relations for this FCM are established. By an extension of the Beltrami field concept, these constitutive relations are exploited to show that planewave propagation is characterized by four generally independent wavenumbers. This FCM can support negative phase velocity at certain translational velocities and with certain wavevectors, even though the corresponding isotropic chiral medium does not. T…
The planar interface of an ordinary, isotropic, homogeneous, dielectric material and a hyperbolic, dielectric, structurally chiral material can support the propagation of one or multiple Dyakonov-Tamm waves, at a specified frequency and along a specified direction in the interface plane. When multiple Dyakonov-Tamm waves can exist, they differ in phase speed, propagation length, degree of localization to the interface, and spatial profiles of the associated electromagnetic fields. Dependence on the relative permittivity scalar of the isotropic partnering material suggests exploitation for opti…
Optical vortices, as a kind of structured beam with helical phase wavefronts and doughnut shape intensity distribution, have been used for fabricating chiral structures in metal and spiral patterns in anisotropic polarization-dependent azobenzene polymer. However, in isotropic polymer, the fabricated microstructures are typically confined to non-chiral cylindrical geometry due to two-dimensional doughnut intensity profile of optical vortices. Here we develop a powerful strategy for realizing chiral microstructures in isotropic material by coaxial interference of a vortex beam and a plane wave,…
Analysis of electromagnetic planewave propagation in a medium which is a spatiotemporally homogeneous, temporally nonlocal, isotropic, chiral medium in a co-moving frame of reference shows that the medium is both spatially and temporally nonlocal with respect to all non-co-moving inertial frames of reference. Using the Lorentz transformations of electric and magnetic fields, we show that plane waves which have positive phase velocity in the co-moving frame of reference can have negative phase velocity in certain non-co-moving frames of reference. Similarly, plane waves which have negative phas…
The propagation of electromagnetic surface waves guided by the planar interface of two isotropic chiral materials, namely materials $\calA$ and $\calB$, was investigated by numerically solving the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Isotropic chiral material $\calB$ was modeled as a homogenized composite material, arising from the homogenization of an isotropic chiral component material and an isotropic achiral, nonmagnetic, component material characterized by the relative permittivity $\eps_a^\calB$. Changes in the nature of the surface waves were explored as the volume fraction $f_a…
We study theoretically the characteristics of surface waves excited at the interface between a metal and a general bi-isotropic medium, which includes isotropic chiral media and Tellegen media as special cases. We derive an analytical dispersion relation for surface waves, using which we calculate the effective index and the propagation length numerically. We also calculate the absorptance, the cross-polarized reflectance and the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic fields for plane waves incident on a bilayer system consisting of a metal layer and a bi-isotropic layer in the Kretschman…

Surface waves, named here as Dyakonov-Tamm waves, can exist at the planar interface of an isotropic dielectric material and a chiral sculptured thin film (STF). Due to the periodic nonhomogeneity of a chiral STF, the range of the refractive index of the isotropic material is smaller but the range of the propagation direction in the interface plane is much larger, in comparison to those for the existence of Dyakonov waves at the planar interface of an isotropic dielectric material and a columnar thin film.
Multiple compound surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves can be guided by a structure consisting of a sufficiently thick layer of metal sandwiched between a homogeneous isotropic dielectric (HID) material and a dielectric structurally chiral material (SCM). The compound SPP waves are strongly bound to both metal/dielectric interfaces when the thickness of the metal layer is comparable to the skin depth but just to one of the two interfaces when the thickness is much larger. The compound SPP waves differ in phase speed, attenuation rate, and field profile, even though all are excitable at the sa…
Negative real parts of the permittivity and permeability lead an isotropic chiral medium to exhibit circular dichroism that is reversed with respect to that exhibited by an identical medium but the real parts of whose permittivity and permeability are positive.
Starting from the Maxwell equations, we used the reductive perturbation method to derive a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations for the two Beltrami components of the electromagnetic field propagating along a fixed direction in an isotropic nonlinear chiral metamaterial. With single-resonance Lorentz models for the permittivity and permeability and a Condon model for the chirality parameter, in certain spectral regimes, one of the two Beltrami components exhibits a negative real refractive index when nonlinearity is ignored and the chirality parameter is sufficiently lar…
Metasurfaces, the two-dimensional analogues of metamaterials, are ideal platforms for sensing molecular chirality at the nanoscale, e.g. of inclusions of natural optically active molecules, as they offer large accessible areas (they are essentially surfaces) and can accommodate the necessary strong resonances for coupling the probing radiation with the chiral inclusions. Here, we examine theoretically achiral isotropic metasurfaces, and we treat them as polarizable surfaces that support resonant electric and magnetic currents, which are coupled via the chiral inclusions. We derive analytically…
Bi-isotropic media constitute a proper scenario for scrutinizing optical effects stemming from magnetoelectric parameters. Chiral magnetic current is a macroscopic effect arising from the chiral magnetic effect that enriches the phenomenology of a classical dielectric medium. This work examines optical aspects of bi-isotropic media in the presence of magnetic conductivity. The full isotropic scenario manifests circular birefringence described by a dispersive rotatory power that changes sign at a given frequency. For a bi-isotropic medium with antisymmetric magnetic conductivity, an intricate d…
Bi-isotropic media, which include isotropic chiral media and Tellegen media as special cases, are the most general form of linear isotropic media where the electric displacement and the magnetic induction are related to both the electric field and the magnetic intensity. In inhomogeneous bi-isotropic media, electromagnetic waves of two different polarizations are coupled to each other. In this paper, we develop a generalized version of the invariant imbedding method for the study of wave propagation in arbitrarily-inhomogeneous stratified bi-isotropic media, which can be used to solve the coup…
We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that nonplanar chiral metamaterials give giant optical activity, circular dichroism, and negative refractive index. The transmission, reflection, and the retrieval results of the experiments agree pretty well with the simulations. This is an important step toward the design and fabrication of three-dimensional isotropic chiral metamaterials.
A fractal-like (Cantor-like) stratified structure of chiral and convenient isotropic layers is considered. Peculiarities of the wave localization, self-similarity, scalability and sequential splitting in the reflected field of both the co-polarized and cross-polarized components are studied. The appearing of the additional peak multiplets in stopbands is revealed, and a correlation of their properties with chirality parameter is established.
We study theoretically some unique characteristics of surface electromagnetic waves excited at the interface between two different kinds of general bi-isotropic media, which include Tellegen media and chiral media as special cases. We derive an analytical dispersion relation for those waves, using which we deduce eight different conditions under which they are generated between two Tellegen media and between two chiral media independently of the component of the wave vector along the interface. These make it possible to excite the surface waves for all or a wide range of incident angles in att…
The propagation of plane waves in a Faraday chiral medium is investigated. Conditions for the phase velocity to be directed opposite to the direction of power flow are derived for propagation in an arbitrary direction; simplified conditions which apply to propagation parallel to the distinguished axis are also established. These negative phase-velocity conditions are explored numerically using a representative Faraday chiral medium, arising from the homogenization of an isotropic chiral medium and a magnetically biased ferrite. It is demonstrated that the phase velocity may be directed opposit…

Modern optical microscopy methods have been advanced to provide super resolution at high imaging speed, but not chirality discriminative. We recently proposed chiral structured-illumination microscopy (SIM) method to image chiral fluorescent domains at sub-wavelength resolution. Chiral SIM is suitable for imaging chiral domains at sub-wavelength resolution but loses the high spatial frequency of the achiral ones. In order to obtain the full picture of all fluorescent domains at sub-wavelength resolution, we propose an advanced version of chiral SIM, termed double SIM, which enables simultaneou…
The work is devoted to the self-action of laser beams propagating in the isotropic phase of a cholesteric liquid crystal near the transition temperature to the mesophase in a wide range of parameter values characterizing the nonlocality of the nonlinear optical response of the medium, defocusing in the medium, the power of incident laser radiation and diffraction in the liquid crystal. The origin of the primary singularities of both polarization components of radiation in a wide range of parameters of radiation and the medium is investigated for different values of the parameter characterizing…
We study the no reflection condition for a planar boundary between vacuum and an isotropic chiral medium. In general chiral media, elliptically polarized waves incident at a particular angle satisfy the no reflection condition. When the wave impedance and wavenumber of the chiral medium are equal to the corresponding parameters of vacuum, one of the circularly polarized waves is transmitted to the medium without reflection or refraction for all angles of incidence. We propose a circular polarizing beam splitter as a simple application of the no reflection effect.
Two numerical studies, one based on a canonical boundary-value problem and the other based on a reflection-transmission problem, revealed that the propagation of high-phase-speed Dyakonov-Tamm (HPSDT) surface waves may be supported by the planar interface of a chiral sculptured thin film and a dissipative isotropic dielectric material. Furthermore, many distinct HPSDT surface waves may propagate in a specific direction, each with a phase speed exceeding the phase speed of plane waves that can propagate in the isotropic partnering material. Indeed, for the particular numerical example considere…
Thermal radiation from bulk disorderly placed nonresonant emitters is incoherent, broadband and isotropic. In an external magnetic field the thermal radiation from any source is circularly polarized. Here we propose a thermal radiation source which emits circularly polarized radiation and which is not placed in a magnetic field. The thermal source consists of a slab waveguide with etched chiral metasurface. Due to the absence of a mirror symmetry of the metasurface, the thermally generated electromagnetic waves become circularly polarized. In this letter we discuss the origin of this phenomeno…
We introduce chiral gradient metasurfaces that allow perfect transmission of all the incident wave into a desired direction and simultaneous perfect rotation of the polarization of the refracted wave with respect to the incident one. Besides using gradient polarization densities which provide bending of the refracted wave with respect to the incident one, using metasurface inclusions that are chiral allows the polarization of the refracted wave to be rotated. We suggest a possible realization of the proposed device by discretizing the required equivalent surface polarization densities realized…
We theoretically investigate light matter interactions for chiral molecules in the presence of non-chiral nanoantennas. Isotropic nanostructures supporting optical-frequency electric or magnetic dipoles are sufficient to locally enhance the excitation of a molecule's chiral polarizability and thus its circular dichroism spectrum. However, simultaneous electric and magnetic dipoles are necessary to achieve a net, spatially-averaged enhancement. Our contribution provides a theoretical framework to understand chiral light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and sets the necessary and sufficient …
We investigate the reflection properties of electromagnetic/optical waves in isotropic chiral media. When the chiral parameter is strong enough, we show that an unusual \emph{negative reflection} occurs at the interface of the chiral medium and a perfectly conducting plane, where the incident wave and one of reflected eigenwaves lie in the same side of the boundary normal. Using such a property, we further demonstrate that such a conducting plane can be used for focusing in the strong chiral medium. The related equations under paraxial optics approximation are deduced. In a special case of chi…
Upon using fundamental electromagnetic properties of metasurfaces we build a platform to classify reciprocal bianisotropic metasurfaces from typical experimental measurements and determine isotropic, anisotropic, bi-isotropic (chiral), and bianisotropic (so-called omega) properties. We provide experimental guidelines to identify each class by measuring macroscopic scattering parameters, i.e., reflection and transmission coefficients upon plane wave illumination with linear and/or circular polarization. We explicitly provide a recipe of what metasurface properties can and cannot be inferred by …
