A system of periodic poly-disperse coated nano-rods is considered. Both the coated nano-rods and host material are non-magnetic. The exterior nano-coating has a frequency dependent dielectric constant and the rod has a high dielectric constant. A negative effective magnetic permeability is generated near the Mie resonances of the rods while the coating generates a negative permittivity through a field resonance controlled by the plasma frequency of the coating and the geometry of the crystal. The explicit band structure for the system is calculated in the sub-wavelength limit. Tunable pass bands exhibiting negative group velocity are generated and correspond to simultaneously negative effective dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. These can be explicitly controlled by adjusting the distance between rods, the coating thickness, and rod diameters.
We investigate, both theoretically and numerically, a graphene-coated nano-cylinder illuminated by a plane electromagnetic wave in THz range of frequencies. We have derived an analytical formula that enables fast evaluation of the spectral window with a substantial reduction in scattering efficiency for sufficiently thin cylinder. This effect leads to tunable resonant invisibility that can be achieved via modification of graphene chemical potential monitored by the gate voltage. A multi-frequency cloaking mechanism based on dimer coated nanowires is also discussed.
The electromagnetic response of subwavelength wires coated with a graphene monolayer illuminated by a linearly polarized plane waves is investigated. The results show that the scattering and extintion cross-sections of the coated wire can be dramatically enhanced when the incident radiation resonantly excites localized surface plasmons. The enhancements occur for p--polarized incident waves and for excitation frequencies that correspond to complex poles in the coefficients of the multipole expansion for the scattered field. By dynamically tuning the chemical potential of graphene, the spectral…
Based on the Lorenz-Mie theory, we derive analytical expressions of radiative and nonradiative transition rates for different orientations of a point dipole emitter in the vicinity of an infinitely long circular cylinder of arbitrary radius. Special attention is devoted to the spontaneous decay rate of a dipole emitter near a subwavelength-diameter nanowire coated with a graphene monolayer. We show that plasmonic Fano resonances associated with light scattering by graphene-coated nanowires appear in the Purcell factor as a function of transition wavelength. Furthermore, the Fano line shape of …
We report on the enhancement of surface plasmon resonances in a holey bidimensional grating of subwavelength size, drilled in a gold thin film coated by a graphene sheet. The enhancement originates from the coupling between charge carriers in graphene and gold surface plasmons. The main plasmon resonance peak is located around 1.5 microns. A lower constraint on the gold-induced doping concentration of graphene is specified and the interest of this architecture for molecular sensing is also highlighted.
Coated and multicoated cylinder systems constitute an appealing metamaterial category, as they allow a very rich and highly tunable response, resulting from the interplay of the many different geometrical and material parameters involved. Here we derive and propose an effective medium approach for the detailed description and analysis of the electromagnetic wave propagation in such systems. In particular, we investigate infinitely-long multilayered cylinders with additional electric and magnetic surface conductivities at each interface. Our effective medium approach is based on the well known …
We investigate electromagnetic scattering of normally irradiated gyrotropic, magneto-optical core-shell cylinders using Lorenz-Mie theory. A general expression for time-averaged electromagnetic energy inside a coated gyroelectric and gyromagnetic scatterer is derived. Using realistic material parameters for a silica core and InSb shell, we calculate the stored electromagnetic energy and the scattering anisotropy. We show that the application of an external magnetic field along the cylinder axis induces a drastic decrease in electromagnetic absorption in a frequency range in the terahertz, wher…
We demonstrate the strong coupling of a quantum dot and a graphene spherical shell coating it. Our simulations are the exact solutions of 3D Maxwell equations. Interaction produces sharp hybrid modes, even when the two are off-resonant, which are voltage-tunable (continuously) in an 80 meV interval. Despite a voltage-tunable quantum dot, the coupling of the light to these "very sharp" plexcitonic resonances is an order of magnitude larger than its coupling to a quantum dot. Hence, our results are very attractive for sensing applications and graphene display technologies with sharper colors. Mo…
Transformation optics is used to design a gateway that can block electromagnetic waves but allows the passage of other entities. Our conceptual device has the advantage that it can be realized with simple materials and structural parameters and can have a reasonably wide bandwidth. In particular, we show that our system can be implemented by using a magnetic photonic crystal structure that employs a square ray of ferrite rods, and as the field response of ferrites can be tuned by external magnetic fields, we end up with an electromagnetic gateway that can be open or shut using external fields.…

Fundamental understanding of the light-matter interaction in the context of nano-particles is immensely bene- fited by the study of geometry dependent tunable Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) and has been demonstrated to have potential applications in various areas of science. The polarization characteristics of LSPR in addition to spectroscopic tuning can be suitably exploited in such systems as contrast enhancement mech- anisms and control parameters. Such polarization characteristics like diattenuation and retardance have been studied here using a novel combination of Muller-matri…
We study the formation of frequency band gaps in single column woodpile phononic crystals composed of orthogonally stacked slender cylinders. We focus on investigating the effect of the cylinders local vibrations on the dispersion of elastic waves along the stacking direction of the woodpile phononic crystals. We experimentally verify that their frequency band structures depend significantly on the bending resonant behavior of unit cells. We propose a simple theoretical model based on a discrete element method to associate the behavior of locally resonant cylindrical rods with the band gap for…
Here we demonstrate the enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) signal, in the Otto configuration, due to surface plasmon resonance. We present an architecture where the low index dielectric has a variable thickness. This allows the plasmon resonance to be tuned, depending on the magnetic sample and thus be utilized to enhance the MOKE signal of samples separated from the plasmonic device. We have achieved this by using air as low index dielectric where the evanescent wave extends, preceding to excitation of surface plasmons. The magnetic sample under consideration is…
The present study reports magnetic and optical properties of silica mediated lauric acid stabilized magnetic fluids. The tunable birefringence (Δn) and other properties are investigated as a function of (i) concentrations of silica suspension, and (ii) saturation magnetization (MS) 0.5099 kA/m (FN30) and 1.2855 kA/m (F30) of magnetite magnetic fluid (MF). The study reveals that Δn suppresses on addition of silica in FN30, whereas enhances (up to critical concentrations of silica) in F30. The magnetic field induced chain observed in the FN30 based fluids are long, thick and scattered, while sho…
We investigate multiple Fano, comblike scattering resonances in single-layered, concentric core-shell nanoparticles composed of magnetic materials. Using the Lorenz-Mie theory, we derive, in the long-wavelength limit, an analytical condition for the occurrence of comblike resonances in the single scattering by coated spheres. This condition establishes that comblike scattering response uniquely depends on material parameters and thickness of the shell, provided that it is magnetic and thin compared to the scatterer radius. We also demonstrate that comblike scattering response shows up beyond t…
All-dielectric resonant micro- and nano-structures made of the high-index dielectrics recently emerge as a promising SERS platform which can complement or potentially replace the metal-based counterparts in routine sensing measurements. These unique structures combine the highly-tunable optical response and high field enhancement with the non-invasiveness, i.e., chemically non-perturbing the analyte, simple chemical modification and recyclability. Meanwhile, the commercially competitive fabrication technologies for mass production of such structures are still missing. Here, we attest a chemica…
