A large diameter plasma over 300 mm in diameter is produced by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) discharges using a newly developed large diameter chamber of 400 mm in inner diameter. It is found that the electron temperature decreases as nitrogen gas is added to pure argon plasma, which is considered that nitrogen molecules absorb the electron energy into the vibrational energy and lead to the decrease of the electron temperature. Moreover, it is found that the plasma uniformity is improved by adding nitrogen gas, suggesting that the adjunction of nitrogen gas is effective for producing uniform and low electron temperature plasma.
Extra Ordinary (X) mode conversion to Bernstein wave near Upper Hybrid Resonance (UHR) layer plays an important role in plasma heating through cyclotron resonance. Wave generation at UHR and parametric decay at high power has been observed during Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) heating experiments in toroidal magnetic fusion devices. A small linear system with ECR and UHR layer within the system has been used to conduct experiments on X-B conversion and parametric decay process as a function of system parameters. Direct probing {\em in situ} is conducted and plasma heating is evidenced by s…
Results of experimental investigation of the ECR discharge in a single coil magnetic field as an alternative to RF and helicon discharges for wide-aperture dense plasma fluxes production are presented. A possibility of obtaining wide-aperture high density hydrogen plasma fluxes with homogenous transverse distribution was demonstrated in such a system. The prospects of using this system for obtaining high current ion beams are discussed.
Energy distribution of electrons in the plasma sustained by the electron-cyclotron resonance (ECR) discharge has a complicated shape as a function of various parameters that still remains unknown. Meanwhile, it is an important plasma characteristic. Some methods and approaches give the possibility to estimate or measure the properties of the distributions of the electrons lost from the plasma. One of them, similar to the ion mass spectrometry, was used in this work to obtain such distributions in the non-classical continuous ECR ion source with high (up to $ 50-100$ W/cm$ ^ 3 $) energy input f…
One of the main objectives of the LHD is to extend the plasma confinement database for helical systems and to demonstrate such extended plasma confinement properties to be sustained in steady state. Among the various plasma parameter regimes, the study of confinement properties in the collisionless regime is of particular importance. Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) has been extensively used for these confinement studies of the LHD plasma from the initial operation. The system optimizations including the modification of the transmission and antenna system are performed with the spec…
The magnetic field of the permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source SWISSCASE located at the University of Bern has been numerically simulated and experimentally investigated. For the first time the magnetized volume qualified for electron cyclotron resonance at 10.88 GHz and 388.6 mT has been analyzed in highly detailed 3D simulations with unprecedented resolution. The observed pattern of carbon coatings on the source correlates strongly with the electron and ion distribution in the ECR plasma of SWISSCASE. Under certain plasma conditions the ion distribution is tightly b…
Kinetic instabilities in a dense plasma of a continuous ECR discharge in a mirror magnetic trap at the GISMO setup are studied. We experimentally define unstable regimes and corresponding plasma parameters, where the excitation of electromagnetic emission is observed, accompanied by the precipitation of energetic electrons from the magnetic trap. Comprehensive experimental study of the precipitating electron energy distribution and plasma electromagnetic emission spectra, together with theoretical estimates of the cyclotron instability increment proves that under the experimental conditions th…
A numerical tool for analysing spatially anisotropic electron populations in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasmas has been developed, using a trial-and-error electron energy distribution function (EEDF) fitting method. The method has been tested on space-resolved warm electrons in the energy range $2-20\,\mathrm{keV}$, obtained from self-consistent simulations modelling only electron dynamics in ECR devices, but lacked real-world validation. For experimentally benchmarking the method, we attempted to numerically reproduce the experimental X-ray emission spectrum measured from an argon pl…
We report experimental results of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission from the plasma of an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) discharge in hydrogen, sustained by powerful millimeter-wavelength radiation of a gyrotron. Distinctive features of the considered discharge are the high plasma density ($10^{13}$ cm$^{-3}$ order of magnitude) and, at the same time, the high electron average energy ($10 - 300$ eV), which makes it possible to significantly increase the efficiency of VUV re-emission of the energy deposited into the plasma by the microwave radiation. Experiments were performed with the plas…
The control of fluctuations generated in an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma is attempted by changing microwave powers. It is found that when a cage is introduced in the vacuum chamber, the fluctuations change from turbulent state to chaotic state in the high microwave power region while it changes from chaotic state to periodic state in the low microwave power region. This result suggests that the geometry of the cage affects the state of the instability. Moreover it is found that the superposition of multicusped fields created by small permanent magnets reduces the chaotic dimension…
The local magnetic field in a Penning-Malmberg trap is found by measuring the temperatures that result when electron plasmas are illuminated by microwaves pulses. Multiple heating resonances are observed as the pulse frequencies are swept. The many resonances are due to electron bounce and plasma rotation sidebands. The heating peak corresponding to the cyclotron frequency resonance is identified to determine the magnetic field. A new method for quickly preparing low density electron plasmas for destructive temperature measurements enables a rapid and automated scan of microwave frequencies. T…
Gasdynamic electron cyclotron resonance ion sources are known for their ability to produce huge currents of low to moderately charged ion beams with superior quality. This is achieved by means of tens of kW of microwave heating power, leading to high plasma density. Average power density in the plasma chamber may reach hundreds of W/cm$^3$, which poses very high thermal load to plasma chamber walls. A water-cooled plasma chamber has been developed for the GISMO gasdynamic ECRIS, which is able to handle 10 kW of input microwave power with average power density in the plasma of 250 W/cm$^3$. The…
A simplified and straightforward methodology that may be used to measure N(4 S) density by TALIF technique in strongly emissive plasmas is presented. The method makes use of the absorption peak intensities instead of the fully integrated absorption line intensity. The use of this method, along with a physics-based fitting/filtering procedure enables strongly reducing the experimental uncertainty and performing measurement even in strongly emitting discharges. After validation, the method was employed to investigate the transients of a strongly emissive pulsed microwave discharge. We especially…
The measurement of the electron energy distribution (EED) of electrons escaping axially from a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) is reported. The experimental data were recorded with a room-temperature 14 GHz ECRIS at the JYFL accelerator laboratory. The electrons escaping through the extraction mirror of the ion source were detected with a secondary electron amplifier placed downstream from a dipole magnet serving as an electron spectrometer with 500 eV resolution. It was discovered that the EED in the range of 5 - 250 keV is strongly non-Maxwellian and exhibits severa…

During the initial phase of microwave (MW) power launch inside a MW discharge ion source (MDIS), plasma and the electric fields are evolved with time together in the plasma volume. The spatio-temporal evolution pattern in the cavity of a MDIS is reported here, highlighting the role of these electric fields on power coupling processes. Evolution of electric field and so power coupling processes are calculated using Finite Element Method (FEM). Unlike PIC/MCC or hybrid fluid, here FEM model uses time dependent Poisson solver through drift-diffusion approach. In presence of plasma gradient in the…
A new method for determining plasma parameters from beam current transients resulting from short pulse 1+ injection into a Charge Breeder Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (CB-ECRIS) has been developed. The proposed method relies on few assumptions, and yields the ionisation times $1/n_e\left\langleσv\right\rangle^{\text{inz}}_{q\to q+1}$, charge exchange times $1/n_0\left\langleσv\right\rangle^{\text{cx}}_{q\to q-1}$, the ion confinement times $τ^q$, as well as the plasma energy contents $n_e\left\langle E_e\right\rangle$ and the plasma triple products $n_e \left\langle E_e\right\rangle…
To establish the electron energy distribution function (EEDF), the second derivative of a Langmuir probe current-voltage (I-V) characteristic is numerically integrated using the Tikhonov singular value decomposition regularized method. A comparison of the numerically intagrated EDDF and by a least-squares fitting is discussed. The used I-V haracteristic is measured in an ECR plasma source using a cylindrical probe and the plasma parameters are determined by the Laframboise theory. This technique allows a rapid analysis of plasma parameters at any gas pressure. The obtained EEDF, for the case o…
A simple table-size ECR plasma generator operates in the ATOMKI without axial magnetic trap and without any particle extraction tool. Radial plasma confinement is ensured by a NdFeB hexapole. The table-top ECR is a simplified version of the 14 GHz ATOMKI-ECRIS. Plasma diagnostics experiments are planned to be performed at this device before installing the measurement setting at the big ECRIS. Recently, the plasma generator has been operated in pulsed RF mode in order to investigate the time evolution of the ECR plasma in two different ways. (1) The visible light radiation emitted by the plasma…
The paper reports on a new plasma startup scenario in the Gas Dynamic Trap (GDT) magnetic mirror device. The primary 5 MW neutral beam injection (NBI) plasma heating system fires into a sufficiently dense plasma target ("seed plasma"), which is commonly supplied by an arc plasma generator. In the reported experiments, a different approach to seed plasma generation is explored. One of the channels of the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heating system is used to ionize the neutral gas and build up the density of plasma to a level suitable for NBI capture. After a short transition (about 1 ms)…
Further progress in the development of ECR ion sources (ECRIS) requires deeper understanding of the underlying physics. One of the topics that remains obscure, though being crucial for the performance of the ECRIS, is the electron energy distribution (EED). A well-developed technique of measuring the EED of electrons escaping axially from the magnetically confined plasma of an ECRIS was used for the study of EED in unstable mode of plasma confinement, i.e. in the presence of kinetic instabilities. The experimental data were recorded for pulsed and CW discharges with a room-temperature 14 GHz E…
Propagation and absorption of electromagnetic waves with electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) frequency are experimentally and theoretically investigated for the case of inhomogeneously magnetized plasma column with peripheral vacuum layer, when a left-hand polarized wave (LHPW) is selectively launched. The polarization reversal from the LHPW to the right-hand polarized wave is found to occur near the ECR point. As a result, it is clarified that the LHPW, which has been considered not to be absorbed at the ECR point, is absorbed near the ECR point. The phenomena can be explained by taking into a…
A synthesis technology of endohedral fullerenes such as Fe@C60 has developed with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source. The production of N@C60 was reported. However, the yield was quite low, since most fullerene molecules were broken in the ECR plasma. We have adopted gas-mixing techniques in order to cool the plasma and then reduce fullerene dissociation. Mass spectra of ion beams extracted from fullerene-He, Ar or Xe mixed plasmas were observed with a Faraday cup. From the results, the He gas mixing technique is effective against fullerene destruction.
This paper discusses the capture of an ion beam in a magnetized plasma of an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source based Charge Breeder, as modelled by numerical simulations. As a relevant step forward with respect to previous works, here the capture is modeled by considering a plasma structure determined in a self-consisent way. The plasmoid-halo structure of the ECR plasma - that is consisting of a dense core (the plasmoid) surrounded by a rarefied halo - is further confirmed by the self-consistent calculations, having also some fine structures affected by the electromagnetic field distrib…
The Numerical Advanced Model of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (NAM-ECRIS) is applied for studies of the physical processes in the source. Solutions of separately operating electron and ion modules of NAM-ECRIS are matched in iterative way such as to obtain the spatial distributions of the plasma density and of the plasma potential. Results reveal the complicated profiles with the maximized plasma density close to the ECR surface and on the source axis. The ion-trapping potential dips are calculated to be on the level of ~(0.01-0.05) V being located at the plasma density maxima. The h…

A lot of plasma physics problems are not amenable to exact solutions due to many reasons. It is worth mentioning among them, for example, nonlinearity of the motion equations, variable coefficients or non lineal conditions on known or unknown borders. To solve these problems, different types of approximations which are combinations of analytical and numerical simulation methods are put into practice. The problem of plasma behavior in numerous varieties of a minimum-B magnetic trap where the plasma is heated under electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) conditions is the subject of numerical simulat…
The microwave power absorption efficiency of the mu10 ECR ion thruster, utilized in the Japanese asteroid explorers Hayabusa and Hayabusa2, is investigated in order to allow performance measurement and provide information for its improvement. A model detailing the local electron behavior in a real ECR plasma discharge, based the magnetic field characteristics, is presented. Three methods to evaluate the microwave power absorption efficiency are proposed: an estimation based on the chamber geometry and magnetic field characteristics, a measuremen based on performance parameters and a measuremen…
Plasma of a stationary ECR discharge sustained by gyrotron radiation at a frequency of 24 GHz and a power of up to 600 W in a mirror magnetic trap was studied. At pressures near the gas breakdown threshold, the extinction effect of an electron-cyclotron discharge is observed with increasing radiation power. When the cyclotron resonance cross section approaches the magnetic plug, the power threshold corresponding to the discharge extinction decreases. These experimental results confirm the presence of the effect of particles precipitation from the trap as a result of electron-cyclotron resonanc…
The output of highly charged ions from an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) consists of ionic losses from a highly confined plasma. Therefore, an increase of the output of the ions of interest always is a compromise between an increase in the confinement and an increase of the losses. One route towards a solution consists of attacking the losses in directions (i.e., radial directions) that do not contribute to the required output. This was demonstrated in an experiment (using the Kei ECRIS at NIRS, Japan) where radial losses were electrostatically reduced by positively biasing one…
Negative hydrogen ion sources are used as injectors into accelerators and drive the neutral beam heating in ITER. Certain processes in low-temperature hydrogen plasmas are accompanied by the emission of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission. Studying the VUV radiation therefore provides volumetric rates of plasma-chemical processes and plasma parameters. In the past we have used gasdynamic ECR discharge for volumetric negative ion production and investigated the dependencies between the extracted H$^-$ current density and various ion source parameters. It was shown that it is possible to reach up …
The measurement of the axially lost electron energy distribution escaping from a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source in the range of 4-800 keV is reported. The experiments have revealed the existence of a hump at 150-300 keV energy, containing up to 15% of the lost electrons and carrying up to 30% of the measured energy losses. The mean energy of the hump is independent of the microwave power, frequency and neutral gas pressure but increases with the magnetic field strength, most importantly with the value of the minimum-B field. Experiments in pulsed operation mode have indicate…
Important features of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) operation are accurately reproduced with a numerical code. The code uses the particle-in-cell technique to model a dynamics of ions in ECRIS plasma. It is shown that gas dynamical ion confinement mechanism is sufficient to provide the ion production rates in ECRIS close to the experimentally observed values. Extracted ion currents are calculated and compared to the experiment for few sources. Changes in the extracted ion currents are obtained with varying the gas flow into the source chamber and the microwave power. Empirica…
Photoelectron emission measurements have been performed using a room-temperature 14 GHz ECR ion source. It is shown that the photoelectron emission from Al, Cu, and stainless steel (SAE 304) surfaces, which are common plasma chamber materials, is predominantly caused by radiation emitted from plasma with energies between 8 eV and 1 keV. Characteristic X-ray emission and bremsstrahlung from plasma have a negligible contribution to the photoelectron emission. It is estimated from the measured data that the maximum conceivable photoelectron flux from plasma chamber walls is on the order of 10 % o…

For the measurement of the dynamics of fusion-born alpha particles $E_α\leq 3.5$ MeV in ITER using collective Thomson scattering (CTS), safe transmission of a gyrotron beam at mm-wavelength (1 MW, 60 GHz) passing the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) in the in-vessel tokamak `port plug' vacuum is a prerequisite. Depending on neutral gas pressure and composition, ECR-assisted gas breakdown may occur at the location of the resonance, which must be mitigated for diagnostic performance and safety reasons. The concept of a split electrically biased waveguide (SBWG) has been previously demonstrated…
Fundamental studies of excitation and non-linear evolution of kinetic instabilities of strongly nonequlibrium hot plasmas confined in open magnetic traps suggest new opportunities for fine-tuning of conventional electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources. These devices are widely used for the production of particle beams of high charge state ions. Operating the ion source in controlled turbulence regime allows increasing the absorbed power density and therefore the volumetric plasma energy content in the dense part of the discharge surrounded by the ECR surface, which leads to enhanced bea…
An interferometric imaging technique has been proposed to instantly measure the diameter of individual spherical dust particles suspended in a gas discharge plasma. The technique is based on the defocused image analysis of both spherical particles and their binary agglomerates. Above a critical diameter, the defocused images of spherical particles contain stationary interference fringe patterns and the fringe number increases with particle diameters. Below this critical diameter, the particle size has been measured using the rotational interference fringe patterns which appear only on the defo…
In the past three decades, the development of nuclear physics facilities for fundamental and applied science purposes has required an increasing current of multicharged ion beams. Multiple ionization implies the formation of dense and energetic plasmas, which, in turn, requires specific plasma trapping configurations. Two types of ion source have been able to produce very high charge states in a reliable and reproducible way: electron beam ion sources (EBIS) and electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS). Multiple ionization is also obtained in laser-generated plasmas (laser ion sources …
In a grid-less Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) plasma thruster with a diverging magnetic nozzle, the magnitude of the ambipolar field accelerating the positive ions depends of the perpendicular energy gained by the electrons. This work investigates the heating of the electrons by electromagnetic waves, taking their bouncing motion into account in a confining well formed by the magnetic mirror force and the electrostatic potential of the thruster. An electromagnetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code is used to simulate the plasma in a magnetic field tube. The code's Maxwell solver is based on a se…
A non-relativistic multi-fluid plasma axisymmetric equilibrium model was developed recently to account for the presence of an energetic electron fluid in addition to thermal electron and ion fluids. The equilibrium formulation of a multi-fluid plasma with relativistic energetic electrons is developed and reported in this paper. Relativistic effects in a fluid model approximation can appear in two ways: due to a large macroscopic fluid velocity comparable to the speed of light and large particle's microscopic random motion which becomes significant if the temperature becomes comparable to or la…

A pulsed filamentary plasma source is used for the deposition. Long plasma filaments (~ 140 mm) as a positive discharge are generated inside the tube in argon with methane admixture. FTIR-ATR, XRD, SEM, LSM and XPS analyses give the conclusion that deposited film is amorphous composed of non-hydrogenated sp2 carbon and hydrogenated sp3 carbon. Plasma is characterized using optical emission spectroscopy, voltage-current measurement, microphotography an…

From this SPS, up to 18 mA of H- ions are extracted at a duty cycle of up to 10%. The emitted H- beam current is attenuated through H- de…
Single-crystal nanoparticles of silicon, several tens of nm in diameter, may be suitable as building blocks for single-nanoparticle electronic devices. Previous studies of nanoparticles produced in low-pressure plasmas have demonstrated the synthesis nanocrystals of 2-10 nm diameter but larger particles were amorphous or polycrystalline. This work reports the use of a constricted, filamentary capacitively coupled low-pressure plasma to produce single-crystal silicon nanoparticles with diameters between 20-80 nm. Particles are highly oriented with predominant cubic shape. The particle size dist…

The high density pellet is surrounded by an underdense corona and is isolated by a vacuum region from the simulation box boundary. The laser pulse is shown to filament and create density channels on the laser-plasma interface. The density channels increase the laser absorption efficiency and help generate an energetic electron distribution with a large angular spread. The combined distribution…
