Dusty plasmas play an important role in astrophysical environments such as protostellar clouds and ring systems. A computer simulation of such plasmas will be presented.
Dusty plasma crystals have traditionally been observed and studied in radio frequency (RF) discharge plasmas and their formation in a DC glow discharge plasma remains experimentally challenging. We report the first ever observation of a stable dusty plasma Coulomb crystal in the cathode sheath region of a DC glow discharge plasma. The observations are made in the DPEx device where crystals of mono-disperse Melamine Formaldehyde grains are produced in the background of an Argon plasma. The crystalline nature of the structure is confirmed through a host of measurements that includes the radial p…
Experiments with two-dimensional (2D) plasma crystals are usually carried out in rf plasma sheaths, where the interparticle interactions are modified due to the presence of plasma wakes. The wake-mediated interactions result in the coupling between wave modes in 2D crystals, which can trigger the mode-coupling instability and cause melting. The theory predicts a number of distinct fingerprints to be observed upon the instability onset, such as the emergence of a new hybrid mode, a critical angular dependence, a mixed polarization, and distinct thresholds. In this paper we summarize these key f…
The correlation buildup and the formation dynamics of the shell structure in a spherically confined one-component plasma are studied. Using Langevin dynamics simulations the relaxation processes and characteristic time scales and their dependence on the pair interaction and dissipation in the plasma are investigated. While in systems with Coulomb interaction (e.g. trapped ions) in a harmonic confinement shell formation starts at the plasma edge and proceeds inward, this trend is significantly weakened for dusty plasmas with Yukawa interaction. With a suitable change of the confinement conditio…
Spectra of phonons with out-of-plane polarization were studied experimentally in a 2D plasma crystal. The dispersion relation was directly measured for the first time using a novel method of particle imaging. The out-of-plane mode was proven to have negative optical dispersion, comparison with theory showed good agreement. The effect of the plasma wakes on the dispersion relation is briefly discussed.
We report an experimental observation of coupling of the transverse vertical and longitudinal in-plane dust-lattice wave modes in a two-dimensional complex plasma crystal in the absence of mode crossing. A new large diameter rf plasma chamber was used to suspend the plasma crystal. The observations are confirmed with molecular-dynamics simulations. The coupling manifests itself in traces of the transverse vertical mode appearing in the measured longitudinal spectra and vice versa. We calculate the expected ratio of the trace to the principal mode with a theoretical analysis of the modes in a c…
Two-dimensional plasma crystals are characterized by a strong up-and-down asymmetry not only due to gravity but also due to the presence of plasma flow at the location of particles. We study for the first time the interaction of a single-layer plasma crystal with charged extra particles located above it (upstream of the flow of ions). Upstream extra particles tend to move between the rows of particles in the crystal, accelerate to supersonic speeds, and excite attraction-dominated Mach cones and wakes in the crystal.
The formation of self-consistent dust crystal and its melting is a well known phenomenon in rf generated plasma but remains challenging in DC glow discharge plasma. Here, we report the melting of a two dimensional dusty plasma crystal, suspended in the cathode sheath of a DC glow discharge plasma. The experiments are carried out in a $Π-$shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device where a stationary crystal of melamine formaldehyde particles is formed between the confining strips in a background of Argon plasma. The stable structure breaks and leads to a fluid state on reducing the neutral …
Simulations of dusty plasmas were performed using GRAPE-6, a special-purpose computer designed for gravitational N-body problems. The collective behaviour of dust particles, which are injected into the plasma, was studied by means of three-dimensional computer simulations. As an example of a dusty plasma simulation, we have calculated movement of dust particles in plasmas under microgravity conditions. In this simulation, a dust-free region called the "void" is observed in the dust cloud. Another example was to simulate experiments on Coulomb crystals in plasmas. Formation of a Coulomb crystal…
The creation of a spatially extended stable DC complex plasma crystal is a big experimental challenge and a topical area of research in the field of dusty plasmas. In this paper we describe a newly built and commissioned dusty plasma experimental device, DPEx-II, at the Institute for Plasma Research. The device can support the formation of large sized Coulomb crystals in a DC glow discharge plasma. The plasma in this L-shaped table-top glass chamber is produced between a circular anode and a long tray shaped cathode. It is characterized with the help of various electrostatic probes over a rang…
A numerical model for a 2D-monolayer plasma crystal was established using the Box_tree code. Box_tree is a Barnes_Hut tree code which has proven effective in modeling systems composed of large numbers of particles. Thermally excited waves in this plasma crystal were numerically simulated and dispersion relations for both the longitudinal and transverse wave modes were found. These were compared with the dispersion relations extrapolated from experiment as well as a theory based on harmonic approximation. The results were found to agree with theoretical dispersion relations under different wave…
Real dusty crystals are inhomogeneous due to the presence of external forces. We suggest approximations for calculations of different types of inhomogeneous DC (chain and DC with a few slabs) in the equilibrium state. The results are in a good agreement with experimental results and can be used as an effective diagnostic method for many dusty systems.
A two-dimensional dust crystal levitated in the sheath of a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell is manipulated by heating or cooling the lower electrode. The dust charge is obtained by measuring global characteristics of the levitated crystal obtained from top-view pictures. From the force balance, the electric field in the sheath is reconstructed. From the Bohm criterion, we conclude that the dust crystal is levitated mainly above and just below the classical Bohm point.
It is shown that the wake-mediated interactions between microparticles in a two-dimensional plasma crystal affect the shape of the monolayer, making it non-flat. The equilibrium shape is calculated for various distributions of the particle number density in the monolayer. For typical experimental conditions, the levitation height of particles in the center of the crystal can be noticeably smaller than at the periphery. It is suggested that the effect of wake-induced bending can be utilized in experiments, to deduce important characteristics of the interparticle interaction.
The observation is presented of naturally occurring pairing of particles and their cooperative drift in a two-dimensional plasma crystal. A single layer of plastic microspheres was suspended in the plasma sheath of a capacitively coupled rf discharge in argon at a low pressure of 1 Pa. The particle dynamics were studied by combining the top-view and side-view imaging of the suspension. Cross analysis of the particle trajectories allowed us to identify naturally occurring metastable pairs of particles. The lifetime of pairs was long enough for their reliable identification.
A combined theoretical and experimental analysis of the normal modes of three-dimensional spherially confined Yukawa clusters is presented. Particular attention is paid to the breathing mode and the existence of multiple monopole oscillations in Yukawa systems. Finally, the influence of dissipation on the mode spectrum is investigated.
The dispersion relation of plasma and plasma-dielectric photonic multilayer structures is approached in terms of a one-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulation. For several plasma-dielectric configurations, the system response is obtained using a pulsed excitation and a subsequent two-dimensional frequency analysis. It is first shown that the dispersion relation of a single, homogeneous plasma slab is well described by the cold-plasma model even at low pressures of 1 Pa. The study is extended to the simulation of plasma photonic crystals with a variety of configurations, based on the work of Ho…
Dedicated experiments on melting of 2D plasma crystals were carried out. The melting was always accompanied by spontaneous growth of the particle kinetic energy, suggesting a universal plasma-driven mechanism underlying the process. By measuring three principal dust-lattice (DL) wave modes simultaneously, it is unambiguously demonstrated that the melting occurs due to the resonance coupling between two of the DL modes. The variation of the wave modes with the experimental conditions, including the emergence of the resonant (hybrid) branch, reveals exceptionally good agreement with the theory o…
Implications of recently discovered effect of channeling of upstream extra particles for transport phenomena in a two-dimensional plasma crystal are discussed. Upstream particles levitated above the lattice layer and tended to move between the rows of lattice particles. An example of heat transport is considered, where upstream particles act as moving heat sources, which may lead to anomalous heat transport. The average channeling length observed was 15 - 20 interparticle distances. New features of the channeling process are also reported.
The full melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal was induced in a principally stable monolayer by localized laser stimulation. Two distinct behaviors of the crystal after laser stimulation were observed depending on the amount of injected energy: (i) below a well-defined threshold, the laser melted area recrystallized; (ii) above the threshold, it expanded outwards in a similar fashion to mode-coupling instability induced melting, rapidly destroying the crystalline order of the whole complex plasma monolayer. The reported experimental observations are due to the fluid mode-coupling instabi…
A 3D woodpile structure tunable plasma photonic crystal is designed, simulated, and experimentally characterized over the S - X band of the electromagnetic spectrum. The measurements confirm that the electromagnetic response is rich in dynamics. The photonic crystal's reconfigurability, achieved through individual discharge control of the properties of the woodpile plasma columns, offers an unprecedented opportunity to better resolve the interactions between both the Bragg and localized surface plasmon modes which dominate the spectrum at lower frequencies. Both the experiments and simulations…
The transition between linear and nonlinear regimes of the mode-coupling instability (MCI) operating in a monolayer plasma crystal is studied. The mode coupling is triggered at the centre of the crystal and a melting front is formed, which travels through the crystal. At the nonlinear stage, the mode coupling results in synchronisation of the particle motion and the kinetic temperature of the particles grows exponentially. After melting of the crystalline structure, the mean kinetic energy of the particles continued to grow further, preventing recrystallisation of the melted phase. The effect …
A new method called `Configurational Temperature' is introduced in the context of dusty plasma, where the temperature of the dust particles, submerged in the plasma, can be measured directly from the positional information of the individual dust particles and the interaction potential between the dust grains. This method does not require the velocity information of individual particles which is a key parameter to measure the dust temperature in the conventional method. The technique is initially tested using two dimensional OpenMP parallel Molecular Dynamics and Monte-Carlo simulation and then…
We describe the experimental verification of lattice resonances in two-dimensional photonic crystals constructed from an array of gaseous plasma columns. Enhancements are seen in the extinction of normal incidence transverse electric electromagnetic waves when the localized surface plasmon modes of the plasma columns are shifted into the vicinity of the photonic crystal Bragg resonances. Simulations and experiments are in reasonable agreement and confirm the appearance of a Fano-like profile with deep and broad extinction bands. The broadening of the spectra as surface plasmon modes come into …
The formation and melting of a mono-layered charged dust particle crystal in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma is studied. The nature of the melting/formation process is established as a first order phase transition from the nature of the variations in the Coulomb coupling parameter, the dust temperature, the structural order parameter and from the existence of a hysteresis behavior. Our experimental results are distinctly different from existing theoretical predictions for 2D crystals based on the KTHNY mechanism or the Grain boundary induced melting and indicate a novel mechanism that is akin…
The collective motion of dust particles during the mode-coupling induced melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal is explored in molecular dynamics simulations. The crystal is compressed horizontally by an anisotropic confinement. This compression leads to an asymmetric triggering of the mode-coupling instability which is accompanied by alternating chains of in-phase and anti-phase oscillating particles. A new order parameter is proposed to quantify the synchronization with respect to different directions of the crystal. Depending on the orientation of the confinement anisotropy, mode-coupl…
The layered crystal formation in dusty plasma medium depicted by the Yukawa interaction amidst dust has been investigated using Molecular Dynamics simulations. The multilayer structures are shown to form in the presence of a combined gravitational and external electric field force (representing the sheath field in experiments) along the ^ z direction. A detailed study of the dependence of the number of crystal layer formation, their width etc., on various system parameters (viz., the external field profile and the screening length of Yukawa interaction) have been analyzed. The structural prope…
We conducted experimental studies and computer simulations of standing striations in capacitive coupled plasma in Argon gas. Standing striations were observed at frequencies 3.6, 8.4 and 19.0 MHz, in a pressure range 0.05-10 Torr, tube radius R=1.1 cm, for a certain range of discharge currents (plasma densities). Numerical simulations revealed similar nature of standing striations in CCP and moving striations in DC discharges under similar discharge conditions. Comparison of computer simulations with experimental observations helped clarify the nature of these striations. The non-linear depend…
Laboratory realizations of 2D plasma crystals typically involve monodisperse microparticles confined into horizontal monolayers in radio-frequency (rf) plasma sheaths. This gives rise to the so-called plasma wakes beneath the microparticles. The presence of wakes renders the interactions in such systems non-reciprocal, a fact that can lead to a quite different behaviour from the one expected for their reciprocal counterparts. Here we examine the buckling of a hexagonal 2D plasma crystal, occurring as the confinement strength is decreased, taking explicitly into account the non-reciprocity of t…
The spectral asymmetry of the wave energy distribution of dust particles during mode-coupling induced melting, observed for the first time in plasma crystals by Couëdel et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 053108 (2014)], is studied theoretically and by molecular-dynamics simulations. It is shown that an anisotropy of the well confining the microparticles selects the directions of preferred particle motion. The observed differences in intensity of waves of opposed directions is explained by a nonvanishing phonon flux. Anisotropic phonon scattering by defects and Umklapp scattering are proposed as possible…
The formation of self-consistent crystalline structure is a well-known phenomenon in complex plasmas. In most experiments the pressure and rf power are the main controlling parameters in determining the phase of the system. We have studied the effect of externally applied magnetic field on the configuration of plasma crystals, suspended in the sheath of a radio-frequency discharge using the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment (MDPX) device. Experiments are performed at a fixed pressure and rf power where a crystalline structure is formed within a confining ring. The magnetic field is then incre…
Strong correlation effects in classical and quantum plasmas are discussed. In particular, Coulomb (Wigner) crystallization phenomena are reviewed focusing on one-component non-neutral plasmas in traps and on macroscopic two-component neutral plasmas. The conditions for crystal formation in terms of critical values of the coupling parameters and the distance fluctuations and the phase diagram of Coulomb crystals are discussed.
Single-crystal nanoparticles of silicon, several tens of nm in diameter, may be suitable as building blocks for single-nanoparticle electronic devices. Previous studies of nanoparticles produced in low-pressure plasmas have demonstrated the synthesis nanocrystals of 2-10 nm diameter but larger particles were amorphous or polycrystalline. This work reports the use of a constricted, filamentary capacitively coupled low-pressure plasma to produce single-crystal silicon nanoparticles with diameters between 20-80 nm. Particles are highly oriented with predominant cubic shape. The particle size dist…
We study effects of the particle-wake interactions on the dispersion and polarization of dust lattice wave modes in two-dimensional plasma crystals. Most notably, the wake-induced coupling between the modes causes the branches to "attract" each other, and their polarizations become elliptical. Upon the mode hybridization the major axes of the ellipses (remaining mutually orthogonal) rotate by $45^\circ$. To demonstrate importance of the obtained results for experiments, we plot spectral densities of the longitudinal and transverse waves revealing distinct fingerprints of the mixed polarization…
Spherical quartz stones of around 1 cm in diameter have been exposed to anodic arc discharges in a helium atmosphere at 300 Torr. The arc current flowing between the graphite electrodes was set either in continuous DC mode (30-150 A) or in pulsed mode at 2 Hz (220 A peak). The ablation rate in each sample was systematically measured after several seconds of arc plasma treatment. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) diagnostics and 2-D fluid simulations of the arc discharge have shed light on the heat flux transport and the heating mechanisms of the quartz crystals. A linear correlation is found…
Topological photonic crystals, which offer topologically protected and back-scattering-immune transport channels, have recently gained significant attention for both scientific and practical reasons. Although most current studies focus on dielectric materials with weak dispersions, this study focuses on topological phases in dispersive materials and presents a numerical study of Chern insulators in gaseous-phase plasma cylinder cells. We develop a numerical framework to address the complex material dispersion arising from the plasma medium and external magnetic fields and identify Chern insula…
The wake-mediated propulsion of an "extra" particle in a channel of two neighboring rows of a two-dimensional plasma crystal, observed experimentally by Du et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 021101(R) (2014)], is explained in simulations and theory. We use the simple model of a pointlike ion wake charge to reproduce this intriguing effect in simulations, allowing for a detailed investigation and a deeper understanding of the underlying dynamics. We show that the nonreciprocity of the particle interaction, owing to the wake charges, is responsible for a broken symmetry of the channel that enables a persi…
The formation of plasma crystals confined in an external one-dimensional parabolic potential well is simulated for a normal experimental environment employing a computer code called BOXITREE. Under appropriate conditions, crystals were found to form layered systems. The system's structural phase transitions, including transitions between crystals with differing numbers of layers and the same number of layers but different intralayer structures, were investigated and found to agree with previous theoretical and experimental research results. One- to two-layer transitions were examined in detail…
The weakly nonlinear regime of transverse paramagnetic dust grain oscillations in dusty (complex) plasma crystals is discussed. The nonlinearity, which is related to the sheath electric/magnetic field(s) and to the inter--grain (electrostatic/magnetic dipole) interactions, is shown to lead to the generation of phase harmonics and, in the case of propagating transverse dust-lattice modes, to the modulational instability of the carrier wave due to self--interaction. The stability profile depends explicitly on the form of the electric and magnetic fields in the plasma sheath. The long term evolut…
A comprehensive exploration of regional dust evacuation in complex plasma crystals is presented. Voids created in 3D crystals on the International Space Station have provided a rich foundation for experiments, but cavities in dust crystals formed in ground-based experiments have not received as much attention. Inside a modified GEC RF cell, a powered vertical probe was used to clear the central area of a dust crystal, producing a cavity with high cylindrical symmetry. Cavities generated by three mechanisms are examined. First, repulsion of micrometer-sized particles by a negatively charged pro…
A two-dimensional dust crystal levitated in the sheath of a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell is manipulated by heating or cooling the lower electrode. The dust charge is obtained from top-view pictures of the crystal using a previously developed analytical model. By assuming a simple force balance, and measuring the radial confining force, the vertical electric field profile in the sheath is reconstructed. The dust crystal is shown to levitate on the plasma side of the Bohm point. Finally, it is shown that the ion drag plays an important role in the vertical force b…
In this research, formation of finite two-dimensional (2D) plasma crystals was numerically simulated. The structure was investigated for systems with various Debye length and it was found there is a transition from a complete hexagonal structure to a structure with concentric rings on the outer edge and hexagonal lattice in the interior as the Debye length increases. The vertical as well as horizontal oscillation modes thermally excited in the 2D dust coulomb clusters were investigated. The horizontal mode spectra is shown to agree with published results while the vertical mode spectra obtaine…
Particles in a dusty plasma crystal disturbed by a shock wave are tracked using a three-mode interacting multiple model approach. Color-coded mode probabilities are used to visualize the shock wave propagation through the crystal.
With the rapid development of short-pulse intense laser sources, studies of matter under extreme irradiation conditions enter further unexplored regimes. In addition, an application of X-ray Free- Electron Lasers (XFELs), delivering intense femtosecond X-ray pulses allows to investigate sample evolution in IR pump - X-ray probe experiments with an unprecedented time resolution. Here we present the detailed study of periodic plasma created from the colloidal crystal. Both experimental data and theory modeling show that the periodicity in the sample survives to a large extent the extreme excitat…
Thermally excited waves in a Plasma crystal were numerically simulated using a Box_Tree code. The code is a Barnes_Hut tree code proven effective in modeling systems composed of large numbers of particles. Interaction between individual particles was assumed to conform to a Yukawa potential. Particle charge, mass, density, Debye length and output data intervals are all adjustable parameters in the code. Employing a Fourier transform on the output data, dispersion relations for both longitudinal and transverse wave modes were determined. These were compared with the dispersion relations obtaine…
We present a pump-probe technique for monitoring ultrafast polarizability changes. In particular, we use it to measure the plasma density created at the temporal focus of a self-compressing higher-order pump soliton in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. This is done by monitoring the wavelength of the dispersive wave emission from a counter-propagating probe soliton. By varying the relative delay between pump and probe, the plasma density distribution along the fiber can be mapped out. Compared to the recently introduced interferometric side-probing for monitoring the plasma densit…
Numerical simulations of monolayer dust crystals in an RF complex plasma were performed to examine the crystal structure and quantify the effects of including the collision enhanced ion current in the charging model. A GEC cell similar to a previous experimental work was modeled for a range of RF voltages, using a continuum description for the plasma and a particle description for dust grains. The time history of each dust grain was monitored. The dust charge was computed using both the OML and the collision enhanced charging (CEC) model applicable to the sheath region. The dust model accounte…
Numerical modeling of radio-frequency waves in plasma with sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolution remains challenging even with modern computers. However, such simulations can be sped up using quantum computers in the future. Here, we propose how to do such modeling for cold plasma waves, in particular, for an X wave propagating in an inhomogeneous one-dimensional plasma. The wave system is represented in the form of a vector Schrödinger equation with a Hermitian Hamiltonian. Block-encoding is used to represent the Hamiltonian through unitary operations that can be implemented on a …
Ground state structures of finite, cylindrically confined two-dimensional Yukawa systems composed of charged superparamagnetic dust grains in an external magnetic field are investigated numerically, using molecular dynamic simulations and lattice summation methods. The ground state configuration of the system is identified using, as an approximation, the experimentally obtained shape of the horizontal confinement potential in a classical single layer dusty plasma experiment with non-magnetic grains. Results are presented for the dependence of the number density and lattice parameters of the du…
Plasma photonic crystals designed in this paper are composed of gas discharge tubes to control the flow of electromagnetic waves. The band structures calculated by the finite element method are consistent with the experimental results in that two distinct attenuation peaks appear in the ranges of 1 GHz to 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz to 6 GHz. Electromagnetic parameters of the plasma are extracted by the Nicolson-Ross-Weir method and effective medium theory. The measured electron density is between 1e11 cm-3 and 1e12 cm-3, which verifies the correctness of the parameter used in the simulation, and the co…
A comprehensive analytical theory for nonlinear excitations related to horizontal (longitudinal, acoustic mode) as well as vertical (transverse, optical mode) motion of charged dust grains in a dust crystal is presented. Different types of localized excitations, similar to those well known in solid state physics, are reviewed and conditions for their occurrence and characteristics in dusty plasma crystals are discussed. By employing a continuum approximation (i.e. assuming a long variation scale, with respect to the inter-particle distance) a dust crystal is shown to support nonlinear kink-sha…
In this work, we investigate numerically the transport properties of a 2D complex plasma crystal using diffusion of coplanar dust lattice waves. In the limit where the Hamiltonian interactions can be decoupled from the non-Hamiltonian effects, we identify two distinct types of wave transport: Anderson-type delocalization and long-distance excitation. We use a recently-developed spectral approach to evaluate the contribution of the Anderson problem and compare it to the results of the simulation. The benefit of our approach to transport problems is twofold. First, we employ a highly tunable mac…
A model is presented to explain the normal mode features of dust particles in a planar zigzag crystal chain for the first and second neighbors. The degrees of freedom of particles are the longitudinal and transverse displacements in plane coupled by the first and second neighbor harmonic forces in two-dimensions (2D). The constant electric force duded to the electrodes to keep the zigzag structure is calculated. The coupling between transverse and longitudinal dust-lattice (DL) modes is derived. The latter is considered due to the energy of the electrostatic (Yukawa) potential. Moreover couple…
A numerical simulation utilizing a box_tree code is used to investigate the structure and vertical mode spectrum of finite two-dimensional (2D) plasma crystals. The overall structural symmetry of the system is examined for various Debye lengths and a transition from a predominantly hexagonal structure to a structure having concentric rings along the outer edge and hexagonal lattice symmetry in the interior is shown to develop as the Debye length increases. Both the vertical and horizontal oscillation modes for this type of system are investigated where the horizontal mode spectra is shown to a…
It was demonstrated during the past decade that ultrashort intense laser pulse tightly focused deep inside a transparent dielectric generates the energy density in excess of several MJ/cm3. Such energy concentration with extremely high heating and quenching rates leads to unusual solid-plasma-solid transformation paths overcoming kinetic barriers to formation of previously unknown high-pressure material phases, which are preserved in the surrounding pristine crystal. These results were obtained with the pulse of Gaussian shape in space and in time. Recently it was shown that the Bessel-shaped …
Upon combining Northrop's picture of charged particle motion with modern liquid crystal theories, this paper provides a new description of guiding center dynamics (to lowest order). This new perspective is based on a rotation gauge field (gyrogauge) that encodes rotations around the magnetic field. In liquid crystal theory, an analogue rotation field is used to encode the rotational state of rod-like molecules. Instead of resorting to sophisticated tools (e.g. Hamiltonian perturbation theory and Lie series expansions) that still remain essential in higher-order gyrokinetics, the present approa…
