A numerical simulation utilizing a box_tree code is used to investigate the structure and vertical mode spectrum of finite two-dimensional (2D) plasma crystals. The overall structural symmetry of the system is examined for various Debye lengths and a transition from a predominantly hexagonal structure to a structure having concentric rings along the outer edge and hexagonal lattice symmetry in the interior is shown to develop as the Debye length increases. Both the vertical and horizontal oscillation modes for this type of system are investigated where the horizontal mode spectra is shown to agree with published results while the vertical mode spectra obtained is shown to agree with an independent analytical method. The fundamental frequency for the vertical modes decreases as the mode number l decreases and is shown to have a maximum corresponding to that which would exist if the system acted in toto as a solid plane. For low frequency vertical modes, the largest amplitude particle motion is concentrated within a few inner rings with the outer rings remaining almost motionless. Both of these are in direct contrast to the data obtained for the horizontal modes where it is shown that at high frequencies the largest amplitude particle motion is concentrated within the inner rings.
The vertical motion of a tokamak plasma is analytically modelled during its non-linear phase by a free-moving current-carrying rod inductively coupled to a set of fixed conducting wires or a cylindrical conducting shell. The solutions capture the leading term in a Taylor expansion of the Green's function for the interaction between the plasma column and the surrounding vacuum vessel. The plasma shape and profiles are assumed not to vary during the vertical drifting phase such that the plasma column behaves as a rigid body. In the limit of perfectly conducting structures, the plasma is prevente…
In this paper we propose a vertical stabilization~(VS) control system for tokamak plasmas based on the extremum seeking (ES) algorithm. The gist of the proposed strategy is to inject an oscillating term in the control action and exploit a modified ES algorithm in order to bring to zero the average motion of the plasma along the unstable mode. In this way, the stabilization of the unstable vertical dynamic of the plasma is achieved. The approach is validated by means of both linear and nonlinear simulations of the overall~ITER tokamak magnetic control system, with the aim of demonstrating robus…
In order to identify complicated systems, more prominent and promising methods are needed among which we may refer to fractional order differential equations. The aim of this paper is to propose a fractional order nonlinear model to predict the vertical position of a plasma column system in a Tokamak by using real data from Damavand Tokamak. The system is identified based on a newly introduced fractional order dynamic neural network. The proposed fractional order dynamic neural network (FODNN) is an extension of the integer order dynamic neural network that employs the so called fractional-ord…
A formulation of a multi-input single-output closed-loop subspace method for system identification is employed for the purpose of obtaining control-relevant model of the vacuum-plasma response in the Damavand tokamak. Such a model is particularly well suited for robust controller design. The accuracy of the estimate of the plant dynamics is estimated by different experiments. The method has been described in this paper is a worst-case identification technique, that aims to minimize the error between the identified model and the true plant. The fitness of the identified model around defined ope…
Dusty plasma crystals have traditionally been observed and studied in radio frequency (RF) discharge plasmas and their formation in a DC glow discharge plasma remains experimentally challenging. We report the first ever observation of a stable dusty plasma Coulomb crystal in the cathode sheath region of a DC glow discharge plasma. The observations are made in the DPEx device where crystals of mono-disperse Melamine Formaldehyde grains are produced in the background of an Argon plasma. The crystalline nature of the structure is confirmed through a host of measurements that includes the radial p…
Computational studies of vertical displacement events (VDE's) in shaped tokamaks are presented. The calculations are performed with our nonlinear, 3D resistive MHD code, CTD, which can efficiently treat resistive walls and free boundary displacements in moderately-shaped geometries. This work has a number of related goals: First, the mechanisms for generation of halo currents, the paths taken by them in the plasma and surrounding conductors, and their relative magnitude are elucidated. Second, the coupling between an n=0 vertical instability and an n=1 external kink mode is examined to offer a…
We report an experimental observation of coupling of the transverse vertical and longitudinal in-plane dust-lattice wave modes in a two-dimensional complex plasma crystal in the absence of mode crossing. A new large diameter rf plasma chamber was used to suspend the plasma crystal. The observations are confirmed with molecular-dynamics simulations. The coupling manifests itself in traces of the transverse vertical mode appearing in the measured longitudinal spectra and vice versa. We calculate the expected ratio of the trace to the principal mode with a theoretical analysis of the modes in a c…
Interplay of transition of floating potential fluctuations in a glow discharge plasma in the toroidal vacuum vessel of SINP tokamak has been observed. With variation in the strength of the vertical and toroidal magnetic fields, regular and inverted relaxation oscillations as well as sinusoidal oscillations are observed with the slow and fast time scale of the relaxation oscillations reversing their nature at a high value of vertical magnetic field strength. However for small value of toroidal magnetic field the transitions follow relaxation $\rightarrow$ chaotic oscillations with the chaotic n…
The formation of self-consistent dust crystal and its melting is a well known phenomenon in rf generated plasma but remains challenging in DC glow discharge plasma. Here, we report the melting of a two dimensional dusty plasma crystal, suspended in the cathode sheath of a DC glow discharge plasma. The experiments are carried out in a $Π-$shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device where a stationary crystal of melamine formaldehyde particles is formed between the confining strips in a background of Argon plasma. The stable structure breaks and leads to a fluid state on reducing the neutral …
The creation of a spatially extended stable DC complex plasma crystal is a big experimental challenge and a topical area of research in the field of dusty plasmas. In this paper we describe a newly built and commissioned dusty plasma experimental device, DPEx-II, at the Institute for Plasma Research. The device can support the formation of large sized Coulomb crystals in a DC glow discharge plasma. The plasma in this L-shaped table-top glass chamber is produced between a circular anode and a long tray shaped cathode. It is characterized with the help of various electrostatic probes over a rang…
The key basis for tokamak plasma disruption modeling is to understand how currents flow to the plasma facing surfaces during plasma disruption events. In ITER tokamak, the occurrence of a limited number of major disruptions will definitively damage the chamber with no possibility to restore the device. In the current exchange plasma-wall-plasma, according to the Helmholtz decomposition theorem, our surface current density in the conducting shell - the unknown of our problem - being a vector field twice continuously differentiable in 3D, has been splited into two components: an irrotational (cu…
A non-intrusive method to measure particle interaction using only the thermal motion of the particles is applied to a vertically aligned dust particle pair in a complex plasma. The scanning mode spectra (SMS) are obtained by tracking the thermal motion of the grains, with the interaction strength then determined from the frequencies and the eigenvector configuration of the normal modes. The interaction of the bottom particle acting on the top particle is shown to be Yukawa-like with the screening length suppressed against the ion flow. The interaction of the top particle acting on the bottom p…
The full melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal was induced in a principally stable monolayer by localized laser stimulation. Two distinct behaviors of the crystal after laser stimulation were observed depending on the amount of injected energy: (i) below a well-defined threshold, the laser melted area recrystallized; (ii) above the threshold, it expanded outwards in a similar fashion to mode-coupling instability induced melting, rapidly destroying the crystalline order of the whole complex plasma monolayer. The reported experimental observations are due to the fluid mode-coupling instabi…
The formation and melting of a mono-layered charged dust particle crystal in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma is studied. The nature of the melting/formation process is established as a first order phase transition from the nature of the variations in the Coulomb coupling parameter, the dust temperature, the structural order parameter and from the existence of a hysteresis behavior. Our experimental results are distinctly different from existing theoretical predictions for 2D crystals based on the KTHNY mechanism or the Grain boundary induced melting and indicate a novel mechanism that is akin…
We present the first observations of a square lattice formation in a monodisperse complex plasma system - a configurational transition phenomenon that has long been an experimental challenge in the field. The experiments are conducted in a tabletop L-shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx-II) device in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma environment. By a careful control of the vertical potential confining the charged particles as well as the strength of the ion wake charge interactions with the dust particles we are able to steer the system towards a crystalline phase that exhibits a square latt…
The collective motion of dust particles during the mode-coupling induced melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal is explored in molecular dynamics simulations. The crystal is compressed horizontally by an anisotropic confinement. This compression leads to an asymmetric triggering of the mode-coupling instability which is accompanied by alternating chains of in-phase and anti-phase oscillating particles. A new order parameter is proposed to quantify the synchronization with respect to different directions of the crystal. Depending on the orientation of the confinement anisotropy, mode-coupl…
The layered crystal formation in dusty plasma medium depicted by the Yukawa interaction amidst dust has been investigated using Molecular Dynamics simulations. The multilayer structures are shown to form in the presence of a combined gravitational and external electric field force (representing the sheath field in experiments) along the ^ z direction. A detailed study of the dependence of the number of crystal layer formation, their width etc., on various system parameters (viz., the external field profile and the screening length of Yukawa interaction) have been analyzed. The structural prope…
The spectral asymmetry of the wave energy distribution of dust particles during mode-coupling induced melting, observed for the first time in plasma crystals by Couëdel et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 053108 (2014)], is studied theoretically and by molecular-dynamics simulations. It is shown that an anisotropy of the well confining the microparticles selects the directions of preferred particle motion. The observed differences in intensity of waves of opposed directions is explained by a nonvanishing phonon flux. Anisotropic phonon scattering by defects and Umklapp scattering are proposed as possible…
The formation of self-consistent crystalline structure is a well-known phenomenon in complex plasmas. In most experiments the pressure and rf power are the main controlling parameters in determining the phase of the system. We have studied the effect of externally applied magnetic field on the configuration of plasma crystals, suspended in the sheath of a radio-frequency discharge using the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment (MDPX) device. Experiments are performed at a fixed pressure and rf power where a crystalline structure is formed within a confining ring. The magnetic field is then incre…
A non-perturbative method is introduced to measure the particle-particle interaction strengths and in-situ confinement for a vertically aligned dust particle pair in a complex plasma. The intrinsic thermal motion of each particle is tracked, allowing the interaction strengths and confinement in both the vertical and horizontal directions to be determined simultaneously. The method is validated through quantitative agreement with previous measurements of the non-reciprocal interaction strength in the vertical direction, the horizontal ion wake attraction, and the charge reduction and heating of…
Spherical quartz stones of around 1 cm in diameter have been exposed to anodic arc discharges in a helium atmosphere at 300 Torr. The arc current flowing between the graphite electrodes was set either in continuous DC mode (30-150 A) or in pulsed mode at 2 Hz (220 A peak). The ablation rate in each sample was systematically measured after several seconds of arc plasma treatment. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) diagnostics and 2-D fluid simulations of the arc discharge have shed light on the heat flux transport and the heating mechanisms of the quartz crystals. A linear correlation is found…
The wake-mediated propulsion of an "extra" particle in a channel of two neighboring rows of a two-dimensional plasma crystal, observed experimentally by Du et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 021101(R) (2014)], is explained in simulations and theory. We use the simple model of a pointlike ion wake charge to reproduce this intriguing effect in simulations, allowing for a detailed investigation and a deeper understanding of the underlying dynamics. We show that the nonreciprocity of the particle interaction, owing to the wake charges, is responsible for a broken symmetry of the channel that enables a persi…
