The physical basis of the zero charge flux constraint in gyro kinetics as local momentum conservation, by analogy to the classical Coulomb collisional case

Gyrokinetic turbulence is subject to the constraint that the turbulent charge flux vanishes. This is interpreted, in detail, as arising from momentum conservation at the fluctuation scale. There are beautiful and deep analogies with the classical transport from Coulomb collisions.

Non-invasive vibrational mode spectroscopy of ion Coulomb crystals through resonant collective coupling to an optical cavity field

We report on a novel non-invasive method to determine the normal mode frequencies of ion Coulomb crystals in traps based on the resonance enhanced collective coupling between the electronic states of the ions and an optical cavity field at the single photon level. Excitations of the normal modes are observed through a Doppler broadening of the resonance. An excellent agreement with the predictions of a zero-temperature uniformly charged liquid plasma model is found. The technique opens up for investigations of the heating and damping of cold plasma modes, as well as the coupling between them.

Coulomb crystals in the harmonic lattice approximation

The dynamic structure factor ${\tilde S}({\bf k},ω)$ and the two-particle distribution function $g({\bf r},t)$ of ions in a Coulomb crystal are obtained in a closed analytic form using the harmonic lattice (HL) approximation which takes into account all processes of multi-phonon excitation and absorption. The static radial two-particle distribution function $g(r)$ is calculated for classical ($T \gtrsim \hbar ω_p$, where $ω_p$ is the ion plasma frequency) and quantum ($T \ll \hbar ω_p$) body-centered cubic (bcc) crystals. Experimental Observation of a Dusty Plasma Crystal in the Cathode Sheath of a DC Glow Discharge Plasma

Dusty plasma crystals have traditionally been observed and studied in radio frequency (RF) discharge plasmas and their formation in a DC glow discharge plasma remains experimentally challenging. We report the first ever observation of a stable dusty plasma Coulomb crystal in the cathode sheath region of a DC glow discharge plasma. Coulomb crystallization in expanding laser-cooled neutral plasmas

We present long-time simulations of expanding ultracold neutral plasmas, including a full treatment of the strongly coupled ion dynamics. Thereby, the relaxation dynamics of the expanding laser-cooled plasma is studied, taking into account elastic as well as inelastic collisions. It is demonstrated that, depending on the initial conditions, the ionic component of the plasma may exhibit short-range order or even a superimposed long-range order resulting in concentric ion shells. Influence of electron-ion collisions on Coulomb crystallization of ultracold neutral plasmas

While ion heating by elastic electron-ion collisions may be neglected for a description of the evolution of freely expanding ultracold neutral plasmas, the situation is different in scenarios where the ions are laser-cooled during the system evolution. Outer crusts of neutron stars and interiors of cool white dwarfs consist of bare atomic nuclei, arranged in a crystal lattice and immersed in a Fermi gas of degenerate electrons. Ion structure factors and electron transport in dense Coulomb plasmas

The dynamical structure factor of a Coulomb crystal of ions is calculated at arbitrary temperature below the melting point taking into account multi-phonon processes in the harmonic approximation. In a strongly coupled Coulomb ion liquid, the static structure factor is split into two parts, a Bragg-diffraction-like one, describing incipient long-range order structures, and an inelastic part corresponding to thermal ion density fluctuations. Equation of state of classical Coulomb plasma mixtures

We develop analytic approximations of thermodynamic functions of fully ionized nonideal electron-ion plasma mixtures. In the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, we use our previously developed analytic approximations for the free energy of one-component plasmas with rigid and polarizable electron background and apply the linear mixing rule (LMR).
