Thermodynamic functions of harmonic Coulomb crystals

Phonon frequency moments and thermodynamic functions (electrostatic and vibrational parts of the free energy, internal energy, and heat capacity) are calculated for bcc and fcc Coulomb crystals in the harmonic approximation with a fractional accuracy within one part on 10^5. Temperature dependence of thermodynamic functions is fitted by analytic formulas with an accuracy of a few parts in 10^5. The static-lattice (Madelung) part of the free energy is calculated with an accuracy about 10^{-12}. The Madelung constant and frequency moments of hcp crystals are also computed.

Coulomb crystals in the harmonic lattice approximation

The dynamic structure factor ${\tilde S}({\bf k},ω)$ and the two-particle distribution function $g({\bf r},t)$ of ions in a Coulomb crystal are obtained in a closed analytic form using the harmonic lattice (HL) approximation which takes into account all processes of multi-phonon excitation and absorption. The static radial two-particle distribution function $g(r)$ is calculated for classical ($T \gtrsim \hbar ω_p$, where $ω_p$ is the ion plasma frequency) and quantum ($T \ll \hbar ω_p$) body-centered cubic (bcc) crystals. Higher harmonics of the magnetoplasmon in strongly coupled Coulomb and Yukawa systems

The generation of higher harmonics of the magnetoplasmon frequency which has recently been reported in strongly coupled two-dimensional Yukawa systems is investigated in detail and, in addition, extended to two-dimensional Coulomb systems. We observe higher harmonics over a much larger frequency range than before and compare the theoretical prediction with the simulations. The influence of the coupling, structure, and thermal energy on the excitation of these modes is examined in detail. Thermodynamics and Self-organization of Strongly Coupled Coulomb Clusters: An Experimental Study

In this experimental work, the thermodynamics and self-organization of classical two-dimensional Coulomb clusters are studied as a function of the cluster size. The experiments are carried out in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma in the Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device for clusters with different number of particles. Equation of state of classical Coulomb plasma mixtures

We develop analytic approximations of thermodynamic functions of fully ionized nonideal electron-ion plasma mixtures. In the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, we use our previously developed analytic approximations for the free energy of one-component plasmas with rigid and polarizable electron background and apply the linear mixing rule (LMR). Other thermodynamic functions are obtained through analytic derivation of this free energy. Thermodynamic functions of dense plasmas: analytic approximations for astrophysical applications

We briefly review analytic approximations of thermodynamic functions of fully ionized nonideal electron-ion plasmas, applicable in a wide range of plasma parameters, including the domains of nondegenerate and degenerate, nonrelativistic and relativistic electrons, weakly and strongly coupled Coulomb liquids, classical and quantum Coulomb crystals. We present improvements to previously published approximations. Our code for calculation of thermodynamic functions based on the reviewed approximations is made publicly available.

Equation of state for magnetized Coulomb plasmas

We develop an analytical equation of state (EOS) for magnetized fully ionized plasmas, which cover a wide range of temperatures and densities, from low-density classical plasmas to relativistic, quantum plasma conditions. This EOS directly applies to calculations of structure and evolution of strongly magnetized white dwarfs and neutron stars. We review available analytical and numerical results for thermodynamic functions of the nonmagnetized and magnetized Coulomb gases, liquids, and solids. Thermodynamic State Variables in Quasi-Equilibrium Ultracold Neutral Plasma

The pressure and internal energy of an ultracold plasma in a state of quasi-equilibrium are evaluated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. Coulomb collapse is avoided by modeling electron-ion interactions using an attractive Coulomb potential with a repulsive core. The Thermodynamical Instability Induced by Pressure Ionization in Fluid Helium

A systematic study of pressure ionization is carried out in the chemical picture by the example of fluid helium. By comparing the variants of the chemical model, it is demonstrated that the behavior of pressure ionization depends on the construction of the free energy function.
