A numerical model for a 2D-monolayer plasma crystal was established using the Box_tree code. Box_tree is a Barnes_Hut tree code which has proven effective in modeling systems composed of large numbers of particles. Thermally excited waves in this plasma crystal were numerically simulated and dispersion relations for both the longitudinal and transverse wave modes were found. These were compared with the dispersion relations extrapolated from experiment as well as a theory based on harmonic approximation. The results were found to agree with theoretical dispersion relations under different wave propagation directions with different particle charges and over a range of 0.9<k<5.
The novel thermally degenerate plasma model (based on a system containing relativistically and thermally degenerate inertial-less electron species, non-relativistically and thermally degenerate inertial light nucleus species, and stationary heavy nucleus species) is considered. The basic features of planar and nonplanar solitary structures associated with the thermally degenerate pressure driven nucleus-acoustic waves propagating in such a thermally degenerate plasma system has been investigated. The reductive perturbation method, which is valid for small amplitude solitary waves, is used. It …
Thermally excited waves in a Plasma crystal were numerically simulated using a Box_Tree code. The code is a Barnes_Hut tree code proven effective in modeling systems composed of large numbers of particles. Interaction between individual particles was assumed to conform to a Yukawa potential. Particle charge, mass, density, Debye length and output data intervals are all adjustable parameters in the code. Employing a Fourier transform on the output data, dispersion relations for both longitudinal and transverse wave modes were determined. These were compared with the dispersion relations obtaine…
One of the paradigm-shifting phenomena triggered in laser-plasma interactions at relativistic intensities is the so-called relativistic transparency. As the electrons become heated by the laser to relativistic energies, the plasma becomes transparent to the laser light even though the plasma density is sufficiently high to reflect the laser pulse in the non-relativistic case. This paper highlights the impact that relativistic transparency can have on laser-matter interactions by focusing on a collective phenomenon that is associated with the onset of relativistic transparency: plasma birefring…
A fully ionized multi-nucleus plasma system (containing thermally degenerate electron species, non-degenerate warm light nucleus species, and low dense stationary heavy nucleus species) is considered. The basic features of thermal and degenerate pressure driven small and arbitrary amplitude subsonic and supersonic nucleus-acoustic solitary waves in such a plasma system are studied by the pseudo-potential approach. The effects of stationary heavy nucleus, non-relativistically and ultra-relativistically electron degeneracies, and light nucleus temperature on small and arbitrary amplitude subsoni…
In recent decades, different types of plasma sources have been used for various types of plasma processing, such as, etching and thin film deposition. The critical parameter for effective plasma processing is high plasma density. One type of high density plasma source is Microwave sheath-Voltage combination Plasma (MVP). In the present investigation, a better design of MVP source is reported, in which over-dense plasma is generated for low input microwave powers. The results indicate that the length of plasma column increases significantly with increase in input microwave power.
A rigorous theoretical investigation is made of arbitrary amplitude nucleus acoustic solitary waves (SWs) in a fully ionized multi-nucleus plasma system (consisting of thermally degenerate electron species and non-degenerate warm light as well as heavy nucleus species). The pseudo-potential approach, which is valid for the arbitrary amplitude SWs, is employed. The subsonic and supersonic nucleus-acoustic SWs (which are found to be compressive) along with their basic features are identified. The basic properties of these subsonic and supersonic nucleus-acoustic SWs are found to be significantly…
The strong-coupling mode, called quasimode, will be excited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in high-intensity laser-plasma interaction. And SBS of quasimode will compete with SBS of fast mode (or slow mode) in multi-ion species plasmas, thus leading to a low-frequency burst behavior of SBS reflectivity. The competition of quasimode and ion-acoustic wave (IAW) is an important saturation mechanism of SBS in high-intensity laser-plasma interaction. These results give a clear explanation to the low-frequency periodic burst behavior of SBS and should be considered as a saturation mechanism…
The aim of the present study is to shed light on the effects connected with thermal misbalance due to non-equal cooling and heating rates induced by density and temperature perturbations in solar active regions hosting either propagating torsional or shear Alfvén waves. A description for the nonlinear forces connected with Alfvén waves in non-ideal conditions is provided based on the second order thin flux tube approximation. This provides insight on the effects of Alfvén-induced motions on the boundary of thin magnetic structures in thermally active plasmas. The equations describing the proce…
Coulomb crystallisation of large ensembles of ions has in the past years been intensively studied experimentally with many spectacular results of relevance to infinite systems in one-, two-, and three-dimensions.While strings of a few ions have proven to be very attractive objects in quantum information processing, larger Coulomb crystals have very recently found applications within other aspects the dynamics of quantum systems. Smaller finite ensembles of cold identical charged particles confined by a harmonic potential furthermore constitute very special types of clusters due to the pure rep…
Using particle-in-cell simulation technique, we investigate the plasma and ionization asymmetry, electron and ion energy distribution function in capacitive discharges excited by tailored waveforms. At a base frequency of 13.56 MHz, three different waveforms namely, sinusoidal, saw-tooth, and square are applied for a constant current density of 50 A/m2 and 5 mTorr argon gas pressure. The simulation results show that the square waveform produces the highest plasma density in the discharge, whereas maximum asymmetry is observed for plasma excited by sawtooth like waveform. Both square and sawtoo…
The self-excitation of Plasma Series Resonance (PSR) oscillations plays an important role in the electron heating dynamics in Capacitively Coupled Radio Frequency (CCRF) plasmas. In a combined approach of PIC/MCC simulations and a theoretical model based on an equivalent circuit, we investigate the self-excitation of PSR oscillations and their effect on the electron heating in geometrically symmetric CCRF plasmas driven by multiple consecutive harmonics. The discharge symmetry is controlled via the Electrical Asymmetry Effect, i.e. by varying the total number of harmonics and tuning the phase …
Plasma dipole oscillation (PDO) depicted as harmonic motion of a spatially localized block of electrons has, until now, been hypothetical. In practice, the plasma oscillation occurs always as a part of a plasma wave. Studies on radiation burst from plasmas have focused only on coupling of the plasma wave and electromagnetic wave. Here we show that a very-high-field PDO can be generated by the electrons trapped in a moving train of potential wells. The electrons riding on the potential train coherently construct a local dipole moment by charge separation. The subsequent PDO is found to persist …
A particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation study is performed to investigate the discharge asymmetry, higher harmonic generations and electron heating mechanism in a low pressure very high frequency capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) excited by a saw-tooth like current waveform. Two current densities, 50 A/m2 and 100 A/m2 are chosen for a constant gas pressure of 5 mTorr in argon plasma. The driving frequency is varied from 13.56 MHz to 54.24 MHz. At a lower driving frequency, high frequency modulations on the instantaneous sheath edge position at the grounded electrode are observed. These high freque…
Laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) using high repetition rate mJ-class laser systems brings unique opportunities for a broad range of applications. In order to meet the conditions required for the electron acceleration with lasers operating at lower energies, one has to use high density plasmas and ultrashort pulses. In the case of a few-cycle pulse, the dispersion and the carrier envelope phase effects can no longer be neglected. In this work, the properties of the wake waves generated by ultrashort pulse lasers in near-critical density plasmas are investigated. The results obtained may lead…
The energy deposition and the atomic processes, such as the electron-capture, ionization, excitation and radiative-decays for slow heavy ions in plasma remains an unsolved fundamental problem. Here we investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, the stopping of 100 keV=u helium ions in a well-defined hydrogen plasma. Our precise measurements show a much higher energy loss than the predictions of the semi-classical approaches with the commonly used effective charge. By solving the Time Dependent Rate Equation (TDRE) with all the main projectile states and for all relevant atomic processe…
A broad-spectrum self-excited dust density wave is experimentally studied in a vertically extended nanodusty plasma consisting of in situ grown carbonaceous nanometer sized particles. The nanodusty plasma having high particle density (of the order of 10^12-10^13 m^(-3)) is created with vertical extension up to (40+-0.1) cm and radial extension up to (5+-0.1) cm. The propagation of the self-excited dust density wave under strong Havnes effect is examined over a large axial distance (19+-0.1) cm. Time-resolved Hilbert transformation and Fast Fourier transformation techniques are used to study th…
We consider the problem of self-regulated heating and cooling in galaxy clusters and the implications for cluster magnetic fields and turbulence. Viscous heating of a weakly collisional magnetised plasma is regulated by the pressure anisotropy with respect to the local direction of the magnetic field. The intracluster medium is a high-beta plasma, where pressure anisotropies caused by the turbulent stresses and the consequent local changes in the magnetic field will trigger very fast microscale instabilities. We argue that the net effect of these instabilities will be to pin the pressure aniso…
We report an experimental observation of multiple co--rotating vortices in a extended dust column in the background of non--uniform diffused plasma. Inductively coupled RF discharge is initiated in the background of argon gas in the source region which later found to diffuse in the main experimental chamber. A secondary DC glow discharge plasma is produced to introduce the dust particles into the plasma. These micron sized poly-disperse dust particles get charged in the plasma environment and transported by the ambipolar electric field of the diffused plasma and found to confine in the potenti…
A linear theory of a wakefield excitation in a plasma-dielectric accelerating structure by a drive electron bunch in the case of an off-axis bunch injection has been constructed. The structure under investigation is a round dielectric-loaded metal waveguide with a channel for the charged particles, filled with homogeneous cold plasma. Derived theory was used to investigate numerically the spatial distribution of the bunch-excited wakefield components, which act on both the drive and witness bunches.
The stability of a collisionless, magnetised plasma to local convective disturbances is examined, with a focus on kinetic and finite-Larmor-radius effects. Specific application is made to the outskirts of galaxy clusters, which contain hot and tenuous plasma whose temperature increases in the direction of gravity. At long wavelengths (the "drift-kinetic" limit), we obtain the kinetic version of the magnetothermal instability (MTI) and its Alfvénic counterpart (Alfvénic MTI), which were previously discovered and analysed using a magnetofluid (i.e. Braginskii) description. At sub-ion-Larmor scal…
We report here an exact analytical travelling wave solution for nonlinear electron plasma wave excited by an intense ultra-relativistic proton beam. It brings out the underlying physics of longitudinal electric field characteristics of the excited wake wave formed behind the drive beam. The results are further supplemented by a fully relativistic particle in cell (PIC) code OSIRIS in 2D geometry. The plasma and beam parameters in the simulation are chosen in conformity with experimental work and it provides us the anticipated axial and transverse electric field profiles. The investigation is f…
Resonant asymptotics of wakefield excitation in plasma by non-resonant sequence of relativistic electron bunches has been numerically simulated. It has been shown that in resonant asymptotics at optimal parameters the wakefield is excited with the maximum growth rate and the amplitude of the excited wakefield is the largest.
The electric field in mm-sized clouds of cold Rb^+-ions is measured using the Stark effect of Rydberg atoms embedded in the ion clouds. The ion clouds are produced by UV photoionization of laser-cooled rubidium atoms in a magneto-optic trap. In very dense ion clouds, the Rydberg atom excitation spectra reflect the presence of a neutral plasma core and a positively charged ion shell.
Based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurements of the spatially averaged and peak helium metastable atom densities in a capacitively coupled micro atmospheric pressure plasma jet operated in He/N$_2$ mixtures, the energy efficiency of metastable species (He-I 2$^3$S$_1$) generation is compared for three different scenarios: single frequency operation at (i) 13.56 MHz and (ii) 54.12 MHz, and Voltage Waveform Tailoring (VWT) at (iii) "valleys"-waveforms synthesized from four consecutive harmonics of 13.56 MHz. For each case, the dissipated power is measured based on a …
Many astrophysical systems of interest, including protoplanetary accretion disks, are made of turbu- lent magnetized gas with near solar metallicity. Thermal ionization of alkali metals in such gas exceeds non-thermal ionization when temperatures climb above roughly 1000 K. As a result, the conductiv- ity, proportional to the ionization fraction, gains a strong, positive dependence on temperature. In this paper, we demonstrate that this relation between the temperature and the conductivity triggers an exponential instability that acts similarly to an electrical short, where the increased condu…
Density waves were studied in a phase-separated binary complex plasma under microgravity conditions. For the big particles, waves were self-excited by the two-stream instability, while for small particles, they were excited by heartbeat instability with the presence of reversed propagating pulses of a different frequency. By studying the dynamics of wave crests at the interface, we recognize a "collision zone" and a "merger zone" before and after the interface, respectively. The results provide a generic picture of wave-wave interaction at the interface between two "mediums".
A plasma flow behind a relativistic electron bunch propagating through a cold plasma is found assuming that the transverse and longitudinal dimensions of the bunch are small and the bunch can be treated as a point charge. In addition, the bunch charge is assumed small. A simplified system of equations for the plasma electrons is derived and it is shown that, through a simple rescaling of variables, the bunch charge can be eliminated from the equations. These equations have a unique solution, with an ion cavity formed behind the driver. The equations are solved numerically and the scaling of th…
A new scheme for bright hard x-ray emission from laser wakefield electron accelerator is reported, where pure nitrogen gas is adopted. Intense Betatron x-ray beams are generated from ionization injected K-shell electrons of nitrogen into the accelerating wave bucket. The x-ray radiation shows synchrotron-like spectrum with total photon yield 8$\times$10$^8$/shot and $10^8$ over 110keV. In particular, the betatron hard x-ray photon yield is 10 times higher compared to the case of helium gas under the same laser parameters. Particle-in-cell simulation suggests that the enhancement of the x-ray y…
In plasma wakefield accelerators, the wave excited in the plasma eventually breaks and leaves behind slowly changing fields and currents that perturb the ion density background. We study this process numerically using the example of a FACET experiment where the wave is excited by an electron bunch in the bubble regime in a radially bounded plasma. Four physical effects underlie the dynamics of ions: (1) attraction of ions toward the axis by the fields of the driver and the wave, resulting in formation of a density peak, (2) generation of ion-acoustic solitons following the decay of the density…
It is shown by multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that intense secondary whistler waves with special vortex-like field topology can be excited by a relativistic laser pulse in the highly magnetized, near-critical density plasma. Such whistler waves with lower frequencies obliquely propagate on both sides of the laser propagation axis. The energy conversion rate from laser to whistler waves can exceed 15%. Their dispersion relations and field polarization properties can be well explained by the linear cold-plasma model. The present work presents a new excitation mechanism of whistle…
We present first principles simulations of the direct collisionless coupling of the free energy of fusion-born ions into electron current in a magnetically confined fusion plasma. These simulations demonstrate, for the first time, a key building block of some "alpha channelling" scenarios for tokamak experiments. A fully self-consistent electromagnetic 1D3V particle-in-cell code is used to evolve a parallel drifting ring-beam distribution of 3MeV protons in a 10keV thermal deuterium-electron plasma with realistic mass ratio. Collective instability gives rise to electromagnetic field activity i…
The main populating and depopulating mechanisms of the excited energy levels of ions in plasmas with densities <1023-1024 m-3 are electron collisional excitation from the ion's ground state and radiative decay, respectively, with the majority of the electron population being in the ground state of the ionization stage. Electron collisional ionization is predominately expected to take place from one ground state to that of the next higher ionization stage. However, the question arises as to whether, in some cases, ionization can also affect the excited level populations. This would apply partic…
The understanding of the ro-vibrational dynamics in molecular (near)-atmospheric pressure plasmas is essential to investigate the influence of vibrational excited molecules on the discharge properties. In a companion paper, results of ro-vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) measurements for a nanosecond pulsed plasma jet consisting of two conducting molybdenum electrodes with a gap of 1 mm in nitrogen at 200 mbar are presented. Here, those results are discussed and compared to theoretical predictions based on rate coefficients for the relevant processes found in the literat…
A classical dusty plasma experiment was performed using two different dust grain sizes to form a strongly coupled asymmetric bilayer (two closely spaced interacting monolayers) of two species of charged dust particles. The observation and analysis of the thermally excited particle oscillations revealed the collective mode structure and wave dispersion in this system; in particular the existence of the theoretically predicted $k=0$ energy (frequency) gap was verified. Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were performed to emulate the experiment, assuming Yukawa type inter-particle interac…
The possibility of fusion ignition in proton-Boron$^{11}$ plasma is strongly enhanced if the energy from the fusion-produced $α$ particles is channeled to fast protons, but in an environment in which most of the protons are thermally distributed. This hybrid of thermonuclear fusion and beam-plasma fusion offers surprisingly large advantages to either purely thermonuclear or purely beam-plasma fusion, neither of which can by themselves significantly exceed the large bremsstrahlung radiation emitted by the proton-Boron$^{11}$ plasma. The hybrid scheme has the potential to reduce the confinement …
Earlier, the authors found a mechanism for the sequence of short relativistic electron bunches, which leads to resonant excitation of the wakefield, even if the repetition frequency of bunches differs from the plasma frequency. In this case, the synchronization of frequencies is restored due to defocusing of the bunches which get into the bad phases with respect to the plasma wave. However, in this case, the bunches are lost, which as a result of this do not participate in the excitation of the wakefield. In this paper, numerical simulation was used to study the dynamics of electron bunches an…
Dynamics of self-injected electron bunches has been numerically simulated in blowout regime at self-consistent change of electron bunch acceleration by plasma wakefield, excited by a laser pulse, to additional their acceleration by wakefield, excited by self-injected bunch. Advantages of acceleration by pulse train and bunch self-cleaning have been considered.
Particles ejected from the Sun that stream through the surrounding plasma of the solar wind are causing instabilities. These generate wavemodes in a certain frequency range especially within shock regions, where particles are accelerated. The aim of this paper is to investigate of amplified Alfvenic wavemodes in driven incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Results of different heliospheric scenarios from isotropic and anisotropic plasmas, as well as turbulence near the critical balance are shown. The energy transport of the amplified wavemode is governed by the mechanisms of diffusion…
The effect of nonlinearity on plasma wake wave excited by a relativistic cylindrical charged bunch is investigated. It is shown that owing to the nonlinearity the amplitude of wake wave gets modulated in the longitudinal direction. The nonlinear wavelength in the excited field changes in the transverse direction with the result that the phase front is distored and a turbulence developed. The nonlinear phase front distortion may be compensated by radial change of unperturbed plasma density.
Previous studies on the beam-driven plasma emission process were done mainly for unmagnetized plasmas. Here we present fully-kinetic electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate such process in weakly-magnetized plasmas of the solar corona conditions. The primary mode excited is the beam-Langmuir (BL) mode via the classical bump-on-tail instability. Other modes include the whistler (W) mode excited by the electron cyclotron resonance instability, the generalized Langmuir (GL) waves that include a superluminal Z-mode component with smaller wave number $k$ and a thermal Langmuir c…
A positron-beam interacting with the plasma electrons drives radial suck-in, in contrast to an electron-beam driven blow-out in the over-dense regime, $n_b>n_0$. In a homogeneous plasma, the electrons are radially sucked-in from all the different radii. The electrons collapsing from different radii do not simultaneously compress on-axis driving weak fields. A hollow-channel allows electrons from its channel-radius to collapse simultaneously exciting coherent fields. We analyze the optimal channel radius. Additionally, the low ion density in the hollow allows a larger region with focusing phase…
The spatio-temporal structure of the bulk wakefields excited by a relativistic electron bunch in plasma of semiconductors and semimetals is studied. It is shown that these wakefield consists of the field of longitudinal plasmons and Cherenkov electromagnetic radiation, which is a set of eigen electromagnetic waves of the semiconductor or semimetal waveguide. A branch of the surface plasmons appears in a waveguide with an axial vacuum channel. The process of wake excitation of the surface plasmons by the relativistic electron bunch is also investigated. The intensity of the excited wake surface…
It is shown that an undesirable curvature of the wave front of two-dimensional nonlinear wake wave excited in uniform plasma by a relativistic charged bunch or laser pulse may be compensated by radial change of the equilibrium plasma density.
