A combined theoretical and experimental analysis of the normal modes of three-dimensional spherially confined Yukawa clusters is presented. Particular attention is paid to the breathing mode and the existence of multiple monopole oscillations in Yukawa systems. Finally, the influence of dissipation on the mode spectrum is investigated.
Fluid Modes of a Spherically Confined Yukawa Plasma
H. E. Dubin,Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{66},2076(1991)]中,我们发现了一类新的模式,其特征在于数量$n$,它决定了径向节点的数量在扰动势。这些模式起源于库仑系统的简并体模。极限情况下的本征频率的解析公式推导。
A 2D hydrodynamical model is developed and analyzed for the steady state of a driven-dissipative dust clouds confined in an azimuthally symmetric toroidal system which is in dynamic equilibrium with background unbounded streaming plasma. Its numerical solution not only confirms the analytical structure of the driven dust vortex flow in linear limit as reported in previous analysis, but also shows how the dust vortices are strongly affected by the nonlinear convection of the flow itself. Effects of various system parameters including external driving field and Reynolds number (Re) are investiga…
The spontaneous rotation of small dust clusters confined inside a cubical glass box in the sheath of a complex plasma was observed in experiment. Due to strong coupling between the dust particles, these clusters behave like a rigid-body where cluster rotation is contingent upon their configuration and symmetry. By evaluating the effects of distinct contributing forces, it is postulated that the rotation observed is driven by the net torque exerted on the cluster by the ion wake force. The configuration and symmetry of a cluster determines whether the net torque induced by the ion wake force is…
Observations made in dusty plasma experiments suggest that an ensemble of electrically charged solid particles, confined in an elongated trap, develops structural inhomogeneities. With narrowing the trap the particles tend to form layers oriented parallel with the trap walls. In this work we present theoretical and numerical results on the structure of three-dimensional many-particle systems with screened Coulomb (Yukawa) inter-particle interaction in the strongly coupled liquid phase, confined in one-dimensional harmonic trap, forming quasi-2D configurations. Particle density profiles are cal…
Three-dimensional structure of complex (dusty) plasmas was investigated under long-term microgravity conditions in the International-Space-Station-based Plasmakristall-4 facility. The microparticle suspensions were confined in a polarity-switched dc discharge. The experimental results were compared to the results of the molecular dynamics simulations with the interparticle interaction potential represented as a superposition of isotropic Yukawa and anisotropic quadrupole terms. Both simulated and experimental data exhibited qualitatively similar structural features indicating the bulk liquid-l…
