Three-dimensional structure of complex (dusty) plasmas was investigated under long-term microgravity conditions in the International-Space-Station-based Plasmakristall-4 facility. The microparticle suspensions were confined in a polarity-switched dc discharge. The experimental results were compared to the results of the molecular dynamics simulations with the interparticle interaction potential represented as a superposition of isotropic Yukawa and anisotropic quadrupole terms. Both simulated and experimental data exhibited qualitatively similar structural features indicating the bulk liquid-like order with the inclusion of solid-like strings aligned with the axial electric field. Individual strings were identified and their size spectrum was calculated. The decay rate of the size spectrum was found to decrease with the enhancement of string-like structural features.
The formation and evolution of nonlinear and turbulent dynamical structures in two-dimensional complex plasmas and fluids is explored by means of generalised (drift) fluid simulations. Recent numerical results on turbulence in dusty magnetised plasmas, strongly coupled fluids, semi-classical ("quantum") plasmas and in rotating quantum fluids are reviewed and discussed.
The 3-D exact analytical solutions of ideal two fluid plasma, single fluid plasma (MHD) and neutral fluid equations have been found using physically justifiable assumptions. Surprisingly these solutions satisfy all non-linearities in the systems. It is pointed out that these solutions explain the fundamental mechanism behind the creation of vast variety of ordered structures in plasmas and fluids. In the limiting case of two dimensional (2-D) dependence of fields, the theoretical model for plasma is applied to explain the formation of spicules in solar chromosphere. It is pointed out that the …
In a recent paper (Krishan 2021), a two-fluid description of a partially ionized plasma was presented in which electron fluid and the neutral fluid were combined appropriately into one fluid, christened as ENe fluid, and treat the ions as the second fluid. Some of the electrostatic modes of this two-fluid system were studied. Here, I discuss another possibility in which the ion fluid and the neutral fluid are combined into one fluid, christened as INe fluid, and treat the electrons as the second fluid. There can be a huge variation between the relative masses of the neutrals and the ions. Thus…
Very simple explicit analytical expressions are discussed, which are able to describe the dispersion relations of longitudinal waves in strongly coupled plasma systems such as one-component plasma and weakly screened Yukawa fluids with a very good accuracy. Applications to other systems with soft pairwise interactions are briefly discussed.
A non-relativistic multi-fluid plasma axisymmetric equilibrium model was developed recently to account for the presence of an energetic electron fluid in addition to thermal electron and ion fluids. The equilibrium formulation of a multi-fluid plasma with relativistic energetic electrons is developed and reported in this paper. Relativistic effects in a fluid model approximation can appear in two ways: due to a large macroscopic fluid velocity comparable to the speed of light and large particle's microscopic random motion which becomes significant if the temperature becomes comparable to or la…
The nonlinear frequency shift is derived in a transparent asymptotic form for intense Langmuir waves in general collisionless plasma. The formula describes both fluid and kinetic effects simultaneously. The fluid nonlinearity is expressed, for the first time, through the plasma dielectric function, and the kinetic nonlinearity accounts for both smooth distributions and trapped-particle beams. Various known limiting scalings are reproduced as special cases. The calculation avoids differential equations and can be extended straightforwardly to other nonlinear plasma waves.
It is economical to devise ways and means to simplify a multi-species particle system. The single fluid MHD description of a plasma is sufficiently adequate to study plasma phenomena . A plasma containing multi-species of particles can also be described by representing each particle species by the corresponding fluid. A partially ionized plasma consisting of electrons, ions and the neutral particles can be described as a single fluid by appropriately combining the dynamics of each of the species. The three component plasma can also be reduced to a two-fluid system. The most obvious way is to c…
Complex plasmas consist of microparticles embedded in a low-temperature plasma and allow investigating various effects by tracing the motion of these microparticles. Dust density waves appear in complex plasmas as self-excited acoustic waves in the microparticle fluid at low neutral gas pressures. Here we show that various properties of these waves depend on the position of the microparticle cloud with respect to the plasma sheath and explain this finding in terms of the underlying ion-drift instability. These results may be helpful in better understanding the propagation of dust density waves…
A comprehensive two-fluid nonlinear theory of magnetic reconnection driven at a single, tearing-stable, rational surface embedded in an H-mode tokamak plasma is presented. The surface is assumed to be resonant with one of the dominant helical harmonics of an applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP). The theory described in this paper is highly relevant to the problem of understanding the physics of RMP-induced edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in tokamak plasmas.
We simulate magnetic reconnection in the GEM problem using a two-fluid model with 10 moments for the electron fluid as well as the proton fluid. We show that use of 10 moments for electrons gives good qualitative agreement with the the electron pressure tensor components in published kinetic simulations.
A number of physical processes in laser-plasma interaction can be described with the two-fluid plasma model. We report on a solver for the three-dimensional two-fluid plasma model equations. This solver is particularly suited for simulating the interaction between short laser pulses with plasmas. The fluid solver relies on two-step Lax-Wendroff split with a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme, and we use the PseudoSpectral Analytical Time-Domain (PSATD) method to solve Maxwell's curl equations. Overall, this method is only based on finite difference schemes and fast Fourier transforms and does not…
The common feature of sheared flows of an ideal fluid and plasma in magnetic field is the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This instability is described by identical equations in mentioned two cases. The wave equation for the eigenmodes in the plasma obtained by the kinetic method in the long-wave limit coincides with the Rayleigh equation known for an ideal fluid. Velocity profile with a transition layer of finite width is considered. Odd modes are investigated. Localized velocity shear layer is the source of perturbations propagating beyond the transition layer. The conditions of localization o…
This is a reply to the comment of Jiayong Zou on the paper "Improvements for drift-diffusion plasma fluid models with explicit time integration". The criticism in the comment, namely that the current-limited approach is inconsistent with the underlying partial different equations, seems to be invalid. However, this criticism raises an interesting question about the behavior of the current-limited scheme for a given time step, which is discussed in this reply.
A theory of two-dimensional plasma evolution with Beltrami-like flow and field due to baroclinic effect has been presented. Particular solution of the nonlinear two-fluid equations is obtained. This simple model can explain the generation of magnetic field without assuming the presence of a seed in the system. Coupled field and flow naturally grow together. The theory has been applied to estimate B-field in laser-induced plasmas and the result is in good agreement with experimental values.
A generalized hydrodynamic (GHD) model depicting the behaviour of visco-elastic fluids has often been invoked to explore the behaviour of a strongly coupled dusty plasma medium below their crystallization limit. The model has been successful in describing the collective normal modes of the strongly coupled dusty plasma medium observed experimentally. The paper focuses on the study of nonlinear dynamical characteristic features of this model. Specifically, the evolution of coherent vorticity patches are being investigated here within the framework of this model. A comparison with Newtonian flui…
Drift-reduced plasma fluid models are commonly used in plasma physics for analytics and simulations; however, the validity of such models must be verified for the regions of parameter space in which tokamak plasmas exist. By looking at the linear behaviour of drift-reduced and full-velocity models one can determine that the physics lost through the simplification that the drift-reduction provides is important in the core region of the tokamak. It is more acceptable for the edge-region but one must determine specifically for a given simulation if such a model is appropriate.
A two-fluid model is derived from the plasma kinetic equations using the moment model reduction method. The moment method we adopt was recently developed with a globally hyperbolic regularization where the moment model attained is locally well-posed in time. Based on the hyperbolic moment model with well-posedness, the Maxwellian iteration method is utilized to get the closure relations for the resulted two-fluid model. By taking the Shakhov collision operator in the Maxwellian iteration, the two-fluid model inherits the correct Prandtl number from the plasma kinetic equations. The new model i…
Instabilities of transverse waves due to a constant magnetic field in a non-degenerate quantum electron-ion plasmas are studied. A new type of cyclotron oscillation with a small growth rate is disclosed. Excitation of a new quantum mode is also revealed. Furthermore, the kinetic instabilities of Alfven waves are discussed and the growth rates are obtained. A novel branch of waves that we call a magnetic quantum string waves is found.
Two applications of the Noether method for fluids and plasmas are presented based on the Euler-Lagrange and Euler-Poincare variational principles, which depend on whether the dynamical fields are to be varied independently or not, respectively. The relativistic cold laser-plasma equations, describing the interaction between an intense laser field with a cold relativistic electron plasma, provide a useful set of equations amenable to both variational formulations. The derivation of conservation laws by Noether method proceeds from the Noether equation, whose form depends on the variational form…
The purpose of this paper is to bridge kinetic plasma descriptions and low frequency single fluid models. More specifically, the asymptotics leading to Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (MHD) regimes starting from the Vlasov-Maxwell system are investigated. The analogy with the derivation, from the Vlasov-Poisson system, of a fluid representation for the ions coupled to the Boltzmann relation for electrons is also outlined. The aim is to identify asymptotic parameters explaining the transitions from one microscopic description to a macroscopic low frequency model. These investigations provide ground work …
The transport of heat and particles in the relatively collisional edge regions of magnetically confined plasmas is a scientifically challenging and technologically important problem. Understanding and predicting this transport requires the self-consistent evolution of plasma fluctuations, global profiles and flows, but the numerical tools capable of doing this in realistic (diverted) geometry are only now being developed. Here a 5-field reduced 2-fluid plasma model for the study of instabilities and turbulence in magnetised plasmas is presented, built on the BOUT++ framework. This cold ion mod…
A nonlinear unified fluid model that describes the Equatorial Electrojet, including the Farley-Buneman and gradient-drift plasma instabilities, is defined and shown to be a noncanonical Hamiltonian system. Two geometric constants of motion for the model are obtained and shown to be Casimir invariants. A reformulation of the model shows the roles of the density-gradient scale-length ($L_n$) and the cross-field drift-velocity (${\upsilon}_E$) in controlling the dynamics of unstable modes in the growing, transition, and saturation phases of a simulation.
A model of the fluid nonlinear frequency shift of ion acoustic waves (IAWs) in multi-ion species plasmas is presented, which considers the effect of ion temperature. Because the thermal ion exists in plasmas in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and also solar wind, which should be considered in nonlinear frequency shift of IAWs. However, the existing models [Berger et al., Physics of Plasmas 20, 032107 (2013); Q. S. Feng et al., Phys. Rev. E 94, 023205 (2016)] just consider the cold ion fluid models. This complete theory considering multi-ion species and thermal ions will calculate the frequen…
Random electromagnetic fields are ubiquitous in plasmas, the most common example being electromagnetic radiation of thermal origin. They should exert a random force on electrons and ions in a plasma, adding a random component to their motion. Products of randomly fluctuating quantities, such as velocity and magnetic field, which are correlated through the dynamical equations of the two-fluid model of plasma, should then exhibit non-zero average values. Investigation of such effects requires spatial-spectral representation of the non-linear equations of the two-fluid model. Chandrasekhar-Kendal…
A fluid description for collisionless magnetized plasmas that takes into account the effect of cyclotron resonance has been developed. Following the same approach as the Landau fluid closure, the heat flux components associated with transverse electromagnetic fluctuations are approximated by a linear combination of lower-order moments in wavenumber space. The closure successfully reproduces the linear cyclotron resonance for electromagnetic waves propagating parallel to the ambient magnetic field. In the presence of finite temperature anisotropy, the model gives approximately correct predictio…
A computational fluid model is developed to study waves and instabilities. A new technique involving initial perturbations in configuration space have been implemented to excite the plasma waves; i.e. the perturbations acting similar to a random velocity distribution in particle in cell (PIC) codes. This forms a new powerful tool for investigation of many waves arising in both thermal and cold plasmas and as such will allow investigation of problems demanding scales and resolution not yet possible by PIC codes. The model predicts Langmuir waves, two stream instabilities, nonlinear wave-wave in…
Because of the large mass differences between electrons and ions, the heat diffusion in electron-ion plasmas exhibits more complex behavior than simple heat diffusion found in typical gas mixtures. In particular, heat is diffused in two distinct, but coupled, channels. Conventional single fluid models neglect the resulting complexity, and can often inaccurately interpret the results of heat pulse experiments. However, by recognizing the sensitivity of the electron temperature evolution to the ion diffusivity, not only can previous experiments be interpreted correctly, but informative simultane…
The properties of the nonlinear frequency shift (NFS) especially the fluid NFS from the harmonic generation of the ion-acoustic wave (IAW) in multi-ion species plasmas have been researched by Vlasov simulation. The pictures of the nonlinear frequency shift from harmonic generation and particles trapping are shown to explain the mechanism of NFS qualitatively. The theoretical model of the fluid NFS from harmonic generation in multi-ion species plasmas is given and the results of Vlasov simulation are consistent to the theoretical result of multi-ion species plasmas. When the wave number $kλ_{De…
A new one-dimensional fluid model for ions in weakly-ionized plasma is proposed. The model differs from the existing ones in two aspects. First, a more accurate approximation of the collision terms in the fluid equations is suggested. For this purpose, the results obtained using the Monte-Carlo kinetic model of the ion swarm experiments are considered. Second, the ion energy equation is taken into account. The fluid equations are closed using a simple model of the ion velocity distribution function. The accuracy of the fluid model is examined by comparing with the results of particle-in-cell/M…
The normal modes of a three-dimensional Yukawa plasma in an isotropic, harmonic confinement are investigated by solving the linearized cold fluid equations. The eigenmodes are found analytically and expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. It is found that the mode frequencies solely depend on the dimensionless plasma parameter $ξ=κR$, where $R$ is the plasma radius and $κ$ the inverse screening length. The eigenfrequencies increase monotonically with $ξ$ and saturate in the limit $ξ\to\infty$. Compared with the results in the Coulomb limit~[D. H. E. Dubin, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{66},…
Resonant three-wave coupling is an important mechanism via which waves interact in a nonlinear medium. When the medium is a magnetized warm-fluid plasma, a previously-unknown formula for the coupling coefficients is derived by solving the fluid-Maxwell's equations to second order using multiscale perturbative expansions. The formula is not only general but also evaluable, whereby numerical values of the coupling coefficient can be determined for any three resonantly interacting waves propagating at arbitrary angles. As one example, coupling coefficient governing laser scattering is evaluated. …
This paper develops a unified linear theory of local cross-field plasma instabilities, such as the Farley-Buneman, electron thermal, and ion thermal instabilities, in collisional plasmas with fully or partially unmagnetized multi-species ions. Collisional lasma instabilities in low-ionized, highly dissipative, weakly magnetized plasmas play an important role in the lower Earth's ionosphere and may be of importance in other planet ionospheres, star atmospheres, cometary tails, molecular clouds, accretion disks, etc. In the solar chromosphere, macroscopic effects of collisional plasma instabilit…
Starting from first principles quantum kinetic theory for ideal plasmas with exchange effects, the quantum hydrodynamic equations are derived taking moments of the corresponding exchange-Vlasov equation. The case of an electron-ion plasma where ions are entirely classical is considered. The linear dispersion relation for ion-acoustic waves is found from the macroscopic equations and compared with exchange quantum kinetic theory, yielding a qualitative agreement apart from a numerical factor of order one in the exchange contribution, assuming a Maxwellian background as a first step, for analyti…
The energy distributions of Ta ions produced in a nanosecond laser-heated plasma at 4$\times$10$^{15}$ W/cm$^{2}$ are experimentally and theoretically investigated. They are measured far from the target with an electrostatic spectrometer and charge collectors. Shadowgraphy and interferometry are used to characterize the plasma dynamics in the first nanoseconds of the plasma expansion for electron densities ranging from 10$^{18}$ to 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. The experimental data clearly show two components in the energy distributions which depend on the ion charge states. These components are discu…
We consider a plasma described by means of a two-dimensional fluid model across a constant but non-uniform magnetic field $\mathbf{B} = B(x,y) \mathbf{\hat{z}}$. The dynamical evolution of the density and the vorticity takes into account the interchange instability and magnetic field inhomogeneities. First, in order to described the Finite Larmor Radius effects we apply the gyromap to build a Hamiltonian model with ion temperature from a cold-ion model. Second, we show that the gyromap is justified using Braginskii's closure for the stress tensor as well as an apt ordering on the fluctuating q…
We describe gas dynamic and plasma effects for transient plasma jets under different conditions. Our Unified Flow Solver (UFS) is evaluated for simulations of mixed continuum-rarefied flows, transient gas expansion dynamics and collisionless plasma expansion. We identify further advances that are required for hybrid fluid-kinetic simulations of laser-ablation and EEE-induced plasma jets.
Drift-reduced MHD models are widely used to study magnetised plasma phenomena, in particular for magnetically confined fusion applications, as well as in solar and astrophysical research. This letter discusses the choice of Ohm's law in these models, the resulting dispersion relations for the dynamics parallel to the magnetic field, and the implications for numerical simulations. We find that if electron pressure is included in Ohm's law, then both electromagnetic and finite electron mass effects must also be included in order to obtain physical dispersion relations. A simple modification to t…
A new analytical solution of the set of highly nonlinear two-fluid equations is presented to explain the mechanism for the generation of "seed" magnetic field and plasma flow by assuming the density n to have a profile like an exponential in xy-plane and temperature profiles of electrons (ions) to be linear in yz-plane. {It is shown that the baroclinic vectors - $\nablaΨ\times\nabla T_{j}$ (where $Ψ= ln\bar{n}, \bar{n}$ is normalized density, and $T_{j}$ denote the temperatures of electrons and ions for j = e, i) can generate not only the magnetic field but the plasma flow as well.} It is also…
The rotation profile of a magnetized plasma cylinder composed of multiple fluids is investigated analytically, expanding on previous results. The analytic steady-state solution is used as a benchmark for a time-dependent multiple-fluid finite-difference code, MITNS: Multiple-Ion Transport Numerical Solver. Magnetic field evolution is taken into account, both analytically and numerically. Its details are shown to be of importance when particles are allowed out of the domain. MITNS reproduces the asymptotic expansion results for a small parameter $δ\lll1$. For $\sqrt{m_e/m_i} \sim δ\ll 1$, a sli…
For the simulation of disruptions in tokamak fusion plasmas, a fluid model describing the evolution of relativistic runaway electrons and their interaction with the background plasma is presented. The overall aim of the model is to self-consistently describe the nonlinear coupled evolution of runaway electrons (REs) and plasma instabilities during disruptions. In this model, the runaway electrons are considered as a separate fluid species in which the initial seed is generated through the Dreicer source, which eventually grows by the avalanche mechanism (further relevant source mechanisms can …
The discharge structure of inductively coupled plasma is studied via fluid simulation and analytic theory collaboration. At low pressure, the discharge is stratified by the double layer, which is modelled as dipole moment. The parabolic profile is formed in the discharge core when recombination loss is negligible and both the electron and anions are the Boltzmann balanced. At increasing the pressure, the main characteristics, i.e., parabolic, elliptic and flat-topped profile, are experienced, predicted by the simulation and analytics. Self-coagulation is accompanied at all considered pressures…
An expression for the internal energy of a fluid element in a weakly coupled, magnetized, anisotropic plasma is derived from first principles. The result is a function of entropy, particle density and magnetic field, and as such plays the role of a thermodynamic potential: it determines in principle all thermodynamic properties of the fluid element. In particular it provides equations of state for the magnetized plasma. The derivation uses familiar fluid equations, a few elements of kinetic theory, the MHD version of Faraday's law, and certain familiar stability and regularity conditions.
Comparisons are presented between a hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) simulation of turbulence in a collisionless plasma and fluid reductions. These include Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD) and Landau fluid (LF) or FLR-Landau fluid (FLR-LF) models that retain pressure anisotropy and low-frequency kinetic effects such as Landau damping and, for the last model, finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections. The problem is considered in two space dimensions, when initial conditions involve moderate-amplitude perturbations of a homogeneous equilibrium plasma subject to an out-of-plane magnetic field. LF turns …
Two-fluid flowing equilibrium configurations of a helicity-driven spherical torus (HD-ST) are numerically determined by using the combination of the finite difference and the boundary element methods. It is found from the numerical results that electron fluids near the central conductor are tied to an external toroidal field and ion fluids are not. The magnetic configurations change from the high-$q$ HD-ST ($q$>1) with paramagnetic toroidal field and low-$β$ (volume average $β$ value, ($<β>\approx$ 2 %) through the helicity-driven spheromak and RFP to the ultra low-$q$ HD-ST (0<q<1) with diagm…
The states of asymptotic relaxation of 2-dimensional fluids and plasma present a high degree of regularity and obey to the sinh-Poisson equation. We find that embedding the classical fluid description into a field-theoretical framework, the same equation appears as a manifestation of the self-duality.
By taking into account the radiation reaction force, we derive a set of one-fluid relativistic magnetohydrody-namics (RMHD) equations with the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force based on a relativistic two-fluid plasma. These equations could be used to situations where spatiotemporal scales of plasma's motion are suffi-ciently large.
Incorporating the radiation reaction force into two-fluid plasma in curved space, we get a set of one-fluid general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) equations with the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force. We analyze the importance of the radiation reaction acting on plasma around an astrophysical compact object.
Immersed boundary methods for computing confined fluid and plasma flows in complex geometries are reviewed. The mathematical principle of the volume penalization technique is described and simple examples for imposing Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in one dimension are given. Applications for fluid and plasma turbulence in two and three space dimensions illustrate the applicability and the efficiency of the method in computing flows in complex geometries, for example in toroidal geometries with asymmetric poloidal cross-sections.
A mini-conference on Hamiltonian and Lagrangian methods in fluid and plasma physics was held on November 14, 2002, as part of the 44th meeting of the Division of Plasma Physics of the American Physical Society. This paper summarizes the material presented during the talks scheduled during the Mini-Conference, which was held to honor Allan Kaufman on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
The document describes a numerical algorithm for plasms and fluids by the Lagrange method, in which the spatial meshes follow the plasma and fluid behavior. Through the mesh wall the plasma and the fluid do not escape. The 3D Lagrange code is originally designed to simulate a Gold cone plasma, which is relevant to confine an imploding fuel in the cone in inertial confinement fusion. However, the 3D Lagrange code would be applied to simulate plasmas and fluids, which are not deformed seriously. The 3D code is designed in the spatial Cartesian coordinate (x, y, z), and employs the compressible f…
The multi-fluid modelling of high-frequency waves in partially ionized plasmas has shown that the behavior of magnetohydrodynamics waves in the linear regime is heavily influenced by the collisional interaction between the different species that form the plasma. Here, we go beyond linear theory and study large-amplitude waves in partially ionized plasmas using a nonlinear multi-fluid code. It is known that in fully ionized plasmas, nonlinear Alfvén waves generate density and pressure perturbations. Those nonlinear effects are more pronounced for standing oscillations than for propagating waves…
We derive the exact relation for the energy transfer in three-dimensional compressible two-fluid plasma turbulence. In the long-time limit, we obtain an exact law which expresses the scale-to-scale average energy flux rate in terms of two point increments of the fluid variables of each species, electric and magnetic field and current density, and puts a strong constraint on the turbulent dynamics. The incompressible single fluid and two-fluid limits and the compressible single fluid limit are recovered under appropriate assumption. In the single fluid limits, analyses are done with and without…
