A Seifert surface F for a knot K is disk decomposable if there is a taut sutured manifold heirarchy for the complement of F, whose decomposing surfaces are all disks. It follows that F has minimal genus for the knot K, and has handlebody complement, i.e., F is free. We show that these necessary conditions for disk decomposability are not sufficient, by constructing a family of knots with genus one free Seifert surfaces, which are not disk decomposable.
We show that for each Seifert form of an algebraically slice knot with nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exists an infinite family of knots having the Seifert form such that the knots are linearly independent in the knot concordance group and not concordant to any knot with coprime Alexander polynomial. Key ingredients for the proof are Cheeger-Gromov-von Neumann rho-invariants for amenable groups developed by Cha and Orr and polynomial splittings of metabelian rho-invariants.
A simple closed curve $α$ in the boundary of a genus two handlebody $H$ is primitive if adding a 2-handle to $H$ along $α$ yields a solid torus. If adding a 2-handle to $H$ along $α$ yields a Seifert-fibered space and not a solid torus, the curve is called Seifert. If $α$ is disjoint from an essential separating disk in $H$, does not bound a disk in $H$, and is not primitive in $H$, then it is said to be proper power. As one of the background papers of the classification project of hyperbolic primitive/Seifert knots in $S^3$ whose complete list is given in [BK20], this paper classifies in term…
We study cobordisms and cobordisms rel boundary of PL locally-flat disk knots $D^{n-2}\into D^n$. Cobordisms of disk knots that do not fix the boundary sphere knots are easily classified by the cobordism properties of these boundaries, and any two even-dimensional disk knots with isotopic boundary knots are cobordant rel boundary. However, the cobordism rel boundary theory of odd-dimensional disk knots is more subtle. Generalizing results of Levine on cobordism of sphere knots, we define disk knot Seifert matrices and show that two higher-dimensional disk knots with isotopic boundaries are cob…
We consider knots whose diagrams have a high amount of twisting of multiple strands. By encircling twists on multiple strands with unknotted curves, we obtain a link called a generalized augmented link. Dehn filling this link gives the original knot. We classify those generalized augmented links that are Seifert fibered, and give a torus decomposition for those that are toroidal. In particular, we find that each component of the torus decomposition is either "trivial", in some sense, or homeomorphic to the complement of a generalized augmented link. We show this structure persists under high D…
A fixed knot $K$ acts via Murasugi sum on the space $\mathcal{S}$ of isotopy classes of knots. This operation endows $\mathcal{S}$ with a directed graph structure denoted by $M\kern-1pt SG(K)$. We show that any given family of knots in $M\kern-1pt SG(K)$ has the structure of a bi-directed complete graph, which is not the case if we restrict the complexity of Murasugi sums. For that purpose, we show that any knot is a Murasugi sum of any two knots, and we give lower and upper bounds for the minimal complexity of Murasugi sum to obtain $K_3$ by $K_1$ and $K_2$. As an application, we show that gi…
We introduce a new standard form of a Seifert surface $F$. In that standard form, $F$ is obtained by successively plumbing flat annuli to a disk $D$, where the gluing regions are all in $D$. We show that any link has a Seifert surface in the standard form, and thereby present a new way of coding a link. We present an algorithm to read the code directly from a braid presentation.
Homogeneous links were introduced by Peter Cromwell, who proved that the projection surface of these links, that given by the Seifert algorithm, has minimal genus. Here we provide a different proof, with a geometric rather than combinatorial flavor. To do this, we first show a direct relation between the Seifert matrix and the decomposition into blocks of the Seifert graph. Precisely, we prove that the Seifert matrix can be arranged in a block triangular form, with small boxes in the diagonal corresponding to the blocks of the Seifert graph. Then we prove that the boxes in the diagonal has non…
We determine the structure of the circular handle decompositions of the family of free genus one knots. Namely, if k is a free genus one knot, then the handle number h(k)= 0, 1 or 2, and, if k is not fibered (that is, if h(k)>0), then k is almost fibered. For this, we develop practical techniques to construct circular handle decompositions of knots with free Seifert surfaces in the 3-sphere (and compute handle numbers of many knots), and, also, we characterize the free genus one knots with more than one Seifert surface. These results are obtained through analysis of spines of surfaces on handl…
This paper proves that every oriented non-disk Seifert surface $F$ for a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is smoothly concordant to a Seifert surface $F^{\prime}$ for a hyperbolic knot $K^{\prime}$ of arbitrarily large volume. This gives a new and simpler proof of the result of Friedl and of Kawauchi that every knot is $S$-equivalent to a hyperbolic knot of arbitrarily large volume. The construction also gives a new and simpler proof of the result of Silver and Whitten and of Kawauchi that for every knot $K$ there is a hyperbolic knot $K^{\prime}$ of arbitrarily large volume and a map of pairs $f:(S^3,K^{\pr…
The Heegaard genus g of an irreducible closed orientable 3-manifold puts a limit on the number and complexity of the pieces that arise in the Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition of the manifold by its canonical tori. For example, if p of the complementary components are not Seifert fibered, then p < g. This result generalizes work of Kobayashi. The Heegaard genus g also puts explicit bounds on the complexity of the Seifert pieces. For example, if the union of the base spaces of the Seifert pieces has Euler characteristic X and there are a total of f exceptional fibers in the Seifert pieces, th…
The classification of high-dimensional mu-component boundary links motivates decomposition theorems for the algebraic K-groups of the group ring A[F_mu] and the noncommutative Cohn localization Sigma^{-1}A[F_mu], for any mu>0 and an arbitrary ring A, with F_mu the free group on mu generators and Sigma the set of matrices over A[F_mu] which become invertible over A under the augmentation A[F_mu] to A. Blanchfield A[F_mu]-modules and Seifert A-modules are abstract algebraic analogues of the exteriors and Seifert surfaces of boundary links. Algebraic transversality for A[F_mu]-module chain comple…
Let $L$ be an oriented link with an alternating diagram $D$. It is known that $L$ is a fibered link if and only if the surface $R$ obtained by applying Seifert's algorithm to $D$ is a Hopf plumbing. Here, we call $R$ a Hopf plumbing if $R$ is obtained by successively plumbing finite number of Hopf bands to a disk. In this paper, we discuss its extension so that we show the following theorem. Let $R$ be a Seifert surface obtained by applying Seifert's algorithm to an almost alternating diagrams. Then $R$ is a fiber surface if and only if $R$ is a Hopf plumbing. We also show that the above theor…
We construct a Seifert surface for a given null-homologous transverse link in a contact manifold that is compatible with a planar open book decomposition, then obtain a formula of the self-linking number. It extends Bennequin's self-linking number formula for braids in the standard contact 3-sphere.
Four constructions of Seifert surfaces - Hopf plumbing, arborescent plumbing, basketry, and T-bandword handle decomposition - are described, and some interrelationships found, e.g.: arborescent Seifert surfaces are baskets; Hopf-plumbed baskets are precisely homogeneous T-bandword surfaces. A Seifert surface is Hopf-plumbed if it is a 2-disk D or if it can be constructed by plumbing a positive or negative Hopf annulus A(O,-1) or A(O,1) to a Hopf-plumbed surface along a proper arc. A Seifert surface is a basket if it is D or it can be constructed by plumbing an n-twisted unknotted annulus A(O,n…
A regular circle-valued Morse function on the knot complement C(K) = S^3\K is a function f from C(K) to S^1 which separates critical points and which behaves nicely in a neighborhood of the knot. Such a function induces a handle decomposition on the knot exterior E(K) = S^3\N (K), with the property that every regular level surface contains a Seifert surface for the knot. We rearrange the handles in such a way that the regular surfaces are as simple as possible. To make this precise the concept of circular width for E(K) is introduced. When E(K) is endowed with a handle decomposition which real…
We address primary decomposition conjectures for knot concordance groups, which predict direct sum decompositions into primary parts. We show that the smooth concordance group of topologically slice knots has a large subgroup for which the conjectures are true and there are infinitely many primary parts each of which has infinite rank. This supports the conjectures for topologically slice knots. We also prove analogues for the associated graded groups of the bipolar filtration of topologically slice knots. Among ingredients of the proof, we use amenable $L^2$-signatures, Ozsváth-Szabó $d$-inva…
A flat plumbing basket is a Seifert surface consisting of a disk and bands contained in distinct pages of the disk open book decomposition of the 3-sphere. In this paper, we examine close connections between flat plumbing baskets and the contact structure supported by the open book. As an application we give lower bounds for the flat plumbing basket numbers and determine the flat plumbing basket numbers for various knots and links, including the torus links.
It is a well-known procedure for constructing a torus knot or link that first we prepare an unknotted torus and meridian disks in the complementary solid tori of it, and second smooth the intersections of the boundary of meridian disks uniformly. Then we obtain a torus knot or link on the unknotted torus and its Seifert surface made of meridian disks. In the present paper, we generalize this procedure by a closed fake surface and show that the resultant two surfaces obtained by smoothing triple points uniformly are essential. We also show that a knot obtained by this procedure satisfies the Ne…
We describe a natural decomposition of a normal complex surface singularity $(X,0)$ into its "thick" and "thin" parts. The former is essentially metrically conical, while the latter shrinks rapidly in thickness as it approaches the origin. The thin part is empty if and only if the singularity is metrically conical; the link of the singularity is then Seifert fibered. In general the thin part will not be empty, in which case it always carries essential topology. Our decomposition has some analogy with the Margulis thick-thin decomposition for a negatively curved manifold. However, the geometric…
If K is a rationally null-homologous knot in a 3-manifold M, the rational genus of K is the infimum of -χ(S)/2p over all embedded orientable surfaces S in the complement of K whose boundary wraps p times around K for some p (hereafter: S is a p-Seifert surface for K). Knots with very small rational genus can be constructed by "generic" Dehn filling, and are therefore extremely plentiful. In this paper we show that knots with rational genus less than 1/402 are all geometric -- i.e. they may be isotoped into a special form with respect to the geometric decomposition of M -- and give a complete c…
This book provides a self-contained introduction to the topology and geometry of surfaces and three-manifolds. The main goal is to describe Thurston's geometrisation of three-manifolds, proved by Perelman in 2002. The book is divided into three parts: the first is devoted to hyperbolic geometry, the second to surfaces, and the third to three-manifolds. It contains complete proofs of Mostow's rigidity, the thick-thin decomposition, Thurston's classification of the diffeomorphisms of surfaces (via Bonahon's geodesic currents), the prime and JSJ decomposition, the topological and geometric classi…
Using spinning we analyze in a geometric way Haefliger's smoothly knotted (4k-1)-spheres in the 6k-sphere. Consider the 2-torus standardly embedded in the 3-sphere, which is further standardly embedded in the 6-sphere. At each point of the 2-torus we have the normal disk pair: a 4-dimensional disk and a 1-dimensional proper sub-disk. We consider an isotopy (deformation) of the normal 1-disk inside the normal 4-disk, by using a map from the 2-torus to the space of long knots in 4-space, first considered by Budney. We use this isotopy in a construction called spinning about a submanifold introdu…
In his Ph.D. thesis, Burak Ozbagci described an algorithm computing signatures of Lefschetz fibrations where the input is a factorization of the monodromy into a product of Dehn twists. In this note, we give a reformulation of Ozbagci's algorithm which becomes much easier to implement. Our main tool is Wall's non-additivity formula applied to what we call partial fiber sum decomposition of a Lefschetz fibration over 2-disk. We show that our algorithm works for bordered Lefschetz fibrations over disk and it yields a formula for the signature of branched covers where the branched loci are regula…
Under mild topological restrictions, this article establishes that a smooth, closed, simply connected manifold of dimension at most seven which can be decomposed as the union of two disk bundles must be rationally elliptic. In dimension five, such manifolds are classified up to diffeomorphism, while the same is true in dimension six when either the second Betti number vanishes or the third Betti number is non-trivial.
The fusion number of a ribbon knot is the minimal number of 1-handles needed to construct a ribbon disk. The strong homotopy fusion number of a ribbon knot is the minimal number of 2-handles in a handle decomposition of a ribbon disk complement. We demonstrate that these invariants behave completely differently under cabling by showing that the (p,1)-cable of any ribbon knot with fusion number one has strong homotopy fusion number one and fusion number p. Our main tools are Juhász-Miller-Zemke's bound on fusion number coming from the torsion order of knot Floer homology and Hanselman-Watson's …
We introduce Tristram-Levine signatures of virtual knots and use them to investigate virtual knot concordance. The signatures are defined first for almost classical knots, which are virtual knots admitting homologically trivial representations. The signatures and $ω$-signatures are shown to give bounds on the topological slice genus of almost classical knots, and they are applied to address a recent question of Dye, Kaestner, and Kauffman on the virtual slice genus of classical knots. A conjecture on the topological slice genus is formulated and confirmed for all classical knots with up to 11 …
Given a Delaunay decomposition of a compact hyperbolic surface, one may record the topological data of the decomposition, together with the intersection angles between the `empty disks' circumscribing the regions of the decomposition. The main result of this paper is a characterization of when a given topological decomposition and angle assignment can be realized as the data of an actual Delaunay decomposition of a hyperbolic surface.
We describe a Lefschetz fibration of genus one on the disk cotangent bundle of any closed orientable surface S. As a corollary, we obtain an explicit genus one open book decomposition adapted to the canonical contact structure on the unit cotangent bundle of S.
We prove that if a contact 3-manifold admits an open book decomposition of genus 0, a certain intersection pattern cannot appear in the homology of any of its minimal symplectic fillings, and moreover, fillings cannot contain symplectic surfaces of positive genus. Applying these obstructions to canonical contact structures on links of normal surface singularities, we show that links of isolated singularities of surfaces in the complex 3-space are planar only in the case of $A_n$-singularities. In general, we characterize completely planar links of normal surface singularities (in terms of thei…
