The main goal of the present paper is two-fold. First we extend the theory of toroidal embeddings introduced by Kempf, Knudsen, Mumford and Saint-Donat to the class of toroidal varieties with stratifications (which is the main body of the paper). Second we give a proof of the following weak factorization theorem as an application and illustration of the theory: A birational map between complete nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero is a composite of blow ups and blow downs with smooth centers.
Another proof of the weak factorization theorem appeared in a joint paper with Abramovich, Karu and Matsuki (math.AG/9904135) In that paper the theorem is stated and proven in general for proper algebraic and analytic spaces.
For any degenerating Calabi-Yau family, we introduce new limit space which we call galaxy, whose dense subspace is the disjoint union of countably infinite open Calabi-Yau varieties, parametrized by the rational points of the Kontsevich-Soibelman's essential skeleton, while dominated by the Huber adification over the Puiseux series field. Other topics include: projective limits of toroidal compactifications, locally modelled on what we call the limit toric varieties, the way to attach tropicalized family to given Calabi-Yau family, which are weakly related to each other.
We determine the behavior of automorphic Green functions along the boundary components of toroidal compactifications of orthogonal Shimura varieties. We use this analysis to define boundary components of special divisors and prove that the generating series of the resulting special divisors on a toroidal compactification is modular.
Borrowing a reduction principle to a recent preprint of G. Faltings (toroidal resolution of some matrix singularities, 1999), we use Lafforgue's compactification of PGL_r^{N+1}/PGL_r to construct a canonical log-smooth toroidal resolution for the bad reduction in a prime p of Shimura varieties of unitary and symplectic type with parahoric level structures at p. Using this result, non-canonical semi-stable resolutions over Z_p[p^{1/ν}] can be derived.
Levi subgroup actions on Schubert varieties are studied. In the case of partial flag varieties, the horospherical actions are determined. This leads to a characterization of the toroidal and horospherical partial flag varieties with Picard number 1. In the more general case, we provide a set of necessary conditions for the action of a Levi subgroup on a Schubert variety to be toroidal. The singular locus of a (co)minuscule Schubert variety is shown to contain all the $L_{max}$-stable Schubert subvarieties, where $L_{max}$ is the standard Levi subgroup of the maximal parabolic which acts on the…
The recent two proofs for the (weak) factorization theorem for birational maps, one by Włodarczyk and the other by Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk rely on the results of Morelli. The former uses the process for $π$-desingularization (the most subtle part of Morelli's combinatorial algorithm), while the latter uses the strong factorization of toric (toroidal) birational maps directly. This paper provides a coherent account of Morelli's work (and its toroidal extension) clarifying some discrepancies in the original argument.
This is an erratum to math.AG/9803126, Tohoku 51 (1999) 489-537. This erratum describes: 1. the failure of the algorithm in [AMR] and [Morelli1] for the strong factorization pointed out by Kalle Karu, 2. the statement of a refined weak factorization theorem for toroidal birational morphisms in [AMR], in the form utilized in [AKMR] for the proof of the weak factorization theorem for general birationla maps, avoiding the use of the above mentioned algorithm for the strong factorization, and 3. a list of corrections for a few other mistakes in [AMR], mostly pointed out by Laurent Bonavero.
This is a part of our joint program. The purpose of this paper is to study smooth toroidal compactifications of Siegel varieties and their applications, we also try to understand the Kähler-Einstein metrics on Siegel varieties through the compactifications. Let $A_{g,Γ}:=H_g/Γ$ be a Siegel variety, where $H_g$ is the genus-$g$ Siegel space and $Γ$ is an arithmetic subgroup in $Aut(H_g)$. There are four aspects of this paper : 1.There is a correspondence between the category of degenerations of Abelian varieties and the category of limits of weight one Hodge structures. We show that any cusp of…
The main purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual approach to understanding the extension of the Prym map from the space of admissible double covers of stable curves to different toroidal compactifications of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. By separating the combinatorial problems from the geometric aspects we can reduce this to the computation of certain monodromy cones. In this way we not only shed new light on the extension results of Alexeev, Birkenhake, Hulek, and Vologodsky for the second Voronoi toroidal compactification, but we also apply this to ot…
We study the number of distinct ways in which a smooth projective surface $X$ can be realized as a smooth toroidal compactification of a ball quotient. It follows from work of Hirzebruch that there are infinitely many distinct ball quotients with birational smooth toroidal compactifications. We take this to its natural extreme by constructing arbitrarily large families of distinct ball quotients with biholomorphic smooth toroidal compactifications.
We construct projective toroidal compactifications for integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We also construct integral models of the minimal (Satake-Baily-Borel) compactification. Our results essentially reduce the problem to understanding the integral models themselves. As such, they cover all previously known cases of PEL type, as well as all cases of Hodge type involving parahoric level structures. At primes where the level is hyperspecial, we show that our compactifications are canonical in a precise sense. We also provide a new proof of Y. Morita's conjecture on the everywh…
We generalize Friedman's notion of d-semistability, which is a necessary condition for spaces with normal crossings to admit smoothings with regular total space. Our generalization deals with spaces that locally look like the boundary divisor in Gorenstein toroidal embeddings. In this situation, we replace d-semistability by the existence of global log structures for a given gerbe of local log structures. This leads to cohomological descriptions for the obstructions, existence, and automorphisms of log structures. We also apply toroidal crossings to mirror symmetry, by giving a duality constru…
We introduce a new approach to the study of a system of algebraic equations in the algebraic torus whose Newton polytopes have sufficiently general relative positions. Our method is based on the theory of Parshin's residues and tame symbols on toroidal varieties. It provides a uniform algebraic explanation of the recent result of Khovanskii on the product of the roots of such systems and the Gel'fond--Khovanskii result on the sum of the values of a Laurent polynomial over the roots of such systems, and extends them to the case of an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
We present an algorithm for explicitly computing the number of generators of the stable cohomology algebra of any rationally smooth partial toroidal compactification of ${\mathcal A}_g$, satisfying certain additivity and finiteness properties, in terms of the combinatorics of the corresponding toric fans. In particular the algorithm determines the stable cohomology of the matroidal partial compactification, in terms of simple regular matroids that are irreducible with respect to the 1-sum operation, and their automorphism groups. The algorithm also applies to compute the stable Betti numbers i…
Let $X$ be any variety in characteristic zero. Let $V \subset X$ be an open subset that has toroidal singularities. We show the existence of a canonical desingularization of $X$ except for V. It is a morphism $f: Y \to X$ , which does not modify the subset $ V $ and transforms $X$ into a toroidal embedding $Y$, with singularities extending those on $V$. Moreover, the exceptional divisor has simple normal crossings on $Y$. The theorem naturally generalizes the Hironaka canonical desingularization. It does not modify the nonsingular locus $V$ and transforms $X$ into a nonsingular variety $Y$. Th…
In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.
In this paper we develop a Morse-like theory in order to decompose birational maps and morphisms of smooth projective varieties defined over a field of characteristic zero into more elementary steps which are locally étale isomorphic to equivariant flips, blow-ups and blow-downs of toric varieties. A crucial role in the considerations is played by K^*-actions where K is the base field. This paper serves as a basis for proving the weak factorization conjecture on factorization of birational maps in characteristic zero into blow-ups and blow-downs. This is carried out in two subsequent papers, o…
Let (P,X) be Shimura data, M=M(P,X,K) the Shimura variety of level K. To an algebraic representation of P, one can associate a mixed sheaf (variation of Hodge structure, l-adic sheaf) on M. In the paper, we study the degeneration of such sheaves along strata in toroidal compactifications of M. The main result (2.8 in the Hodge setting, 3.9 in the l-adic setting) gives a formula for this degeneration in terms of Hochschild cohomology of certain unipotent subgroups of P. The new version differs from the earlier one in that the proof of 2.8 was rewritten. In particular, the effect of Saito's spec…
We study Hodge bundles on Siegel varieties and their various extensions to smooth toroidal compactifications. Precisely, we construct a canonical Hodge bundle on an arbitrary Siegel variety so that the holomorphic tangent bundle can be embedded into the Hodge bundle, and we observe that the Bergman metric on the Siegel variety is compatible with the induced Hodge metric. Therefore we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the Bergman metric explicitly. Depending on these properties and the uniformitarian of Kähler-Einstein manifold, we study extensions of the tangent bundle over any smooth toroidal…
The purpose of the present paper is to generalize Sakai's work on anticanonical models of rational surfaces to varieties of Fano type. We first prove a characterization of Fano type varieties using the singularities of anticanonical models. Secondly, we study the decomposition of the anticanonical map using the $K_X$-minimal model program.
In this paper, using Gromov-Jost-Korevaar-Schoen technique of harmonic maps to nonpositively curved targets, we study the representations of the fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. As an application of the above considerations we give a proof of a weak version of the Shafarevich Conjecture.
Shimura proved that each principally polarized abelian variety over $\mathbf{C}$ admits a unique factorization into irreducible principally polarized abelian varieties. We give an exposition of his result, and generalize to an arbitrary ground field $k$. If $k$ is separably closed, the irreducible factors are in bijection with the irreducible components of a theta divisor over $k$ giving rise to the polarization.
We show that equivariant tilting modules over equivariant algebras induce equivalences of derived factorization categories. As an application, we show that the derived category of a noncommutative resolution of a linear section of a Pfaffian variety is equivalent to the derived factorization category of a noncommutative gauged Landau-Ginzburg model $(Λ,χ, w)^{\mathbb{G}_m}$, where $Λ$ is a noncommutative resolution of the quotient singularity $W/\operatorname{GSp}(Q)$ arising from a certain representation $W$ of the symplectic similitude group $\operatorname{GSp}(Q)$ of a symplectic vector spa…
Let $\text{X}$ denote a projective variety over an algebraically closed field on which a linear algebraic group acts with finitely many orbits. Then, a conjecture of Soergel and Lunts in the setting of Koszul duality and Langlands' philosophy, postulates that the equivariant derived category of bounded complexes with constructible equivariant cohomology sheaves on $\text{X}$ is equivalent to a full subcategory of the derived category of modules over a graded ring defined as a suitable graded $Ext$. Only special cases of this conjecture have been proven so far. {\it The purpose of this paper is…
We prove that any dominant morphism of algebraic varieties over a field k of characteristic zero can be transformed into a toroidal (hence monomial) morphism by projective birational modifications of source and target. This was previously proved by the first and third author when k is algebraically closed. Moreover we show that certain additional requirements can be satisfied.
For strongly Euler-homogeneous, Saito-holonomic, and tame analytic germs we consider general types of multivariate Bernstein-Sato ideals associated to arbitrary factorizations of our germ. We show the zero loci of these ideals are purely codimension one and the zero loci associated to different factorizations are related by a diagonal property. If, additionally, the divisor is a hyperplane arrangement, we show the Bernstein-Sato ideals attached to a factorization into linear forms are principal. As an application, we independently verify and improve an estimate of Maisonobe's regarding standar…
We discuss Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities in charactetistic 0 as well as more recent progress, both on simplifying and improving Hironaka's method of proof and on new results and directions on families of varieties, leading to joint work on toroidal orbifolds with Michael Temkin and Jarosław Włodarczyk.
The strong factorization conjecture states that a proper birational map between smooth algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic zero can be factored as a sequence of smooth blowups followed by a sequence of smooth blowdowns. We prove a local version of the strong factorization conjecture for toric varieties. Combining this result with the monomialization theorem of S.D.Cutkosky, we obtain a strong factorization theorem for local rings dominated by a valuation.
Perfect quadratic forms give a toroidal compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian g-folds that is Q-factorial and whose ample classes are characterized, over any base. In characteristic zero it has canonical singularities if g is at least 5, and is the canonical model (in the sense of Mori and Reid) if g is at least 12.
In 2002, Alexeev provided a modular interpretation for the toroidal compactification of $A_g$ for the 2nd Voronoi fan. In this paper we show that pairs $(X,Θ)$ in the boundary of this moduli space are semi-log canonical, the analog of log canonical in the non-normal setting. This extends the result of Koll${á}$r stating that principally polarized abelian pairs $(X,Θ)$ are log canonical.
We give a simplified algorithm of the functorial weak factorization of birational morphisms of nonsingular varieties over a field of characteristic zero into a composite of blow-ups and blow-downs with smooth centers.
Let ${\mathcal O}$ be the ring of $S$-integers in a number field $K$. For $A\in\rm{SL}_{2}(\mathcal{O})$ and $k\geq 1$, we define matrix-factorization varieties $V_k(A)$ over ${\mathcal O}$ which parametrize factoring $A$ into a product of $k$ elementary matrices; the equations defining $V_k(A)$ are written in terms of Euler's continuant polynomials. We show that the $V_k(A)$ are rational $(k-3)$-folds with an inductive fibration structure. We combine this geometric structure with arithmetic results to study the Zariski closure of the ${\mathcal O}$-points of $V_k(A)$. We prove that for $k\geq…
We give a short proof of W{\lodarczyk's theorem that any birational map between smooth projective varieties in characteristic zero is a composition of weighted blowups and blowdowns.
Let X->B be a morphism of varieties in characteristic zero. Semistable reduction has been proved for dim(B)=1 (Kempf, Knudsen, Mumford, Saint-Donat), dim(X)=dim(B)-1 (de Jong) and dim(X)=dim(B)+2 (Alexeev, Kollar, Shepherd-Barron). In this paper we consider the general case. First we define what we mean by a semistable morphism in terms of toroidal embeddings. Then we reduce the varieties to toroidal embeddings and solve a slightly weaker version of semistable reduction. We also state the full semistable reduction problem in terms of combinatorics of the associated polyhedral complexes.
For a given Fourier-Mukai equivalence of bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth quasi-projective varieties, we construct Fourier-Mukai equivalences of derived factorization categories of gauged Landau-Ginzburg (LG) models. As an application, we obtain some equivalences of derived factorization categories of K-equivalent gauged LG models. This result is an equivariant version of the result of Baranovsky and Pecharich, and it also gives a partial answer to Segal's conjecture. As another application, we prove that if the kernel of the Fourier-Mukai equivalence is linearizable wi…
We prove functorial weak factorization of projective birational morphisms of regular quasi-excellent schemes in characteristic 0 broadly based on the existing line of proof for varieties. From this general functorial statement we deduce factorization results for algebraic stacks, formal schemes, complex analytic germs, Berkovich analytic and rigid analytic spaces.
New algorithms for prime factorization that outperform the existing ones or take advantage of particular properties of the prime factors can have a practical impact on present implementations of cryptographic algorithms that rely on the complexity of factorization. Currently used keys are chosen on the basis of the present algorithmic knowledge and, thus, can potentially be subject to future breaches. For this reason, it is worth to investigate new approaches which have the potentiality of giving a computational advantage. The problem has also relevance in quantum computation, as an efficient …
Suppose that X to Y is a generically finite map of nonsingular varieties over a field of characteristic zero, and v is a valuation of the function field of X. We prove that it is possible to perform a sequence of monoidal transforms X' to X and Y' to Y so that X' to Y' is a monomial mapping at the center of v. We deduce from this that a birational morphism of nonsingular varieties can be factored along a valuation by a sequence of blowups and blowdowns with nonsingular centers.
Using the weak factorization theorem we give a simple presentation for the value group of the universal Euler characteristic with compact support for varieties of characteristic zero and describe the value group of the universal Euler characteristic of pairs. This gives a new proof for the existence of natural Euler characteristics with values in the Grothendieck group of Chow motives. A generalization of the presentation to the relative setting allows us to define duality and the six operations.
The weak factorization theorem for birational maps is used to prove that for all nonnegative i the ith mod 2 Betti number of compact nonsingular real algebraic varieties has a unique extension to a "virtual Betti number" beta_i defined for all real algebraic varieties, such that if Y is a closed subvariety of X, then beta_i(X) = beta_i(X\Y) + beta_i(Y).
We prove that all points of a toroidal compactification lying over 0-dimensional cusps are rationally equivalent in the integral Chow group for most classical modular varieties (Siegel, Hilbert, orthogonal, Hermitian, quaternionic). This gives a generalization, and even strengthening, of the Manin-Drinfeld theorem in higher dimension from the viewpoint of algebraic cycles. The same result no longer holds for Picard modular varieties, but for them we prove that the difference of any two "special" boundary points, which are dense in the boundary, is torsion.
Given a complex germ $f$ near the point $\mathfrak{x}$ of the complex manifold $X$, equipped with a factorization $f = f_{1} \cdots f_{r}$, we consider the $\mathscr{D}_{X,\mathfrak{x}}[s_{1}, \dots, s_{r}]$-module generated by $ F^{S} := f_{1}^{s_{1}} \cdots f_{r}^{s_{r}}$. We show for a large class of germs that the annihilator of $F^{S}$ is generated by derivations and this property does not depend on the chosen factorization of $f$. We further study the relationship between the Bernstein-Sato variety attached to $F$ and the cohomology support loci of $f$, via the $\mathscr{D}_{X,\mathfrak{…
