In this paper we develop a Morse-like theory in order to decompose birational maps and morphisms of smooth projective varieties defined over a field of characteristic zero into more elementary steps which are locally étale isomorphic to equivariant flips, blow-ups and blow-downs of toric varieties. A crucial role in the considerations is played by K^*-actions where K is the base field.
This paper serves as a basis for proving the weak factorization conjecture on factorization of birational maps in characteristic zero into blow-ups and blow-downs. This is carried out in two subsequent papers, one by the author (Combinatorial structures on toroidal varieties: a proof of the weak Factorization Theorem) and one joint with Abramovich, Karu and Matsuki (Torification and factorization of birational maps). In the last paper, the ideas of the present paper are discussed using geometric invariant theory.
A symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ is called {\em (symplectically) uniruled} if there is a nonzero genus zero GW invariant involving a point constraint. We prove that symplectic uniruledness is invariant under symplectic blow-up and blow-down. This theorem follows from a general Relative/Absolute correspondence for a symplectic manifold together with a symplectic submanifold. A direct consequence is that symplectic uniruledness is a symplectic birational invariant. Here we use Guillemin and Sternberg's notion of cobordism as the symplectic analogue of the birational equivalence.
We develop the technique of weight truncation in the context of wall-crossings in birational cobordisms, parallel to that in [HL15, BFK19]. More precisely, for each such wall-crossing, we embed the bounded above derived category of coherent sheaves of the semistable part as a semi-orthogonal summand of that of the stack in question. Our construction does not require any smoothness assumptions, and exhibits a strong symmetry across the two sides of the wall-crossing. As an application, we show that for wall-crossings satisfying suitable regularity conditions, a certain duality of local cohomolo…
Building on the work of the fourth author in math.AG/9904074, we prove the weak factorization conjecture for birational maps in characteristic zero: a birational map between complete nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero is a composite of blowings up and blowings down with smooth centers. Such a factorization exists which is functorial with respect to absolute isomorphisms, and compatible with a normal crossings divisor. The same holds for algebraic and analytic spaces. Another proof of the main theorem by the fourth author appeared in math.AG/990407…
This is an expanded version of the notes for the lectures given by the author at RIMS in the summer of 1999 to give a detailed account of the proof for the (weak) factorization theorem of birational maps by Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk.
We prove functorial weak factorization of projective birational morphisms of regular quasi-excellent schemes in characteristic 0 broadly based on the existing line of proof for varieties. From this general functorial statement we deduce factorization results for algebraic stacks, formal schemes, complex analytic germs, Berkovich analytic and rigid analytic spaces.
The strong factorization conjecture states that a proper birational map between smooth algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic zero can be factored as a sequence of smooth blowups followed by a sequence of smooth blowdowns. We prove a local version of the strong factorization conjecture for toric varieties. Combining this result with the monomialization theorem of S.D.Cutkosky, we obtain a strong factorization theorem for local rings dominated by a valuation.
The recent two proofs for the (weak) factorization theorem for birational maps, one by Włodarczyk and the other by Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk rely on the results of Morelli. The former uses the process for $π$-desingularization (the most subtle part of Morelli's combinatorial algorithm), while the latter uses the strong factorization of toric (toroidal) birational maps directly. This paper provides a coherent account of Morelli's work (and its toroidal extension) clarifying some discrepancies in the original argument.
This is an erratum to math.AG/9803126, Tohoku 51 (1999) 489-537. This erratum describes: 1. the failure of the algorithm in [AMR] and [Morelli1] for the strong factorization pointed out by Kalle Karu, 2. the statement of a refined weak factorization theorem for toroidal birational morphisms in [AMR], in the form utilized in [AKMR] for the proof of the weak factorization theorem for general birationla maps, avoiding the use of the above mentioned algorithm for the strong factorization, and 3. a list of corrections for a few other mistakes in [AMR], mostly pointed out by Laurent Bonavero.
We give a proof of local strong factorization of a birational extension of regular local rings (of equicharacteristic zero) along a valuation of rank 1 and maximal rational rank. This gives an alternate proof to the geometric proof of this Theorem by Karu. Our proof uses only linear algebra, and is in the spirit of Christensen's proof of this result in dimension 3.
We show that for smooth complex projective varieties the most general combinations of chern numbers that are invariant under the K-equivalence relation consist of the complex elliptic genera. Combined with a recent result of Totaro, we deduce that up to complex cobordism any K-equivalence can be decomposed into a sequence of classical flops.
In this paper we will survey some recent developments in the last decade or so on variation of Geometric Invariant Theory and its applications to Birational Geometry such as the weak Factorization Theorems of nonsingular projective varieties and more generally projective varieties with finite quotient singularities. Along the way, we will also mention some progresses on birational geometry of hyperKähler manifolds as well as certain open problems and conjectures.
We give a simplified algorithm of the functorial weak factorization of birational morphisms of nonsingular varieties over a field of characteristic zero into a composite of blow-ups and blow-downs with smooth centers.
We announce a factorization result for equivariant birational morphisms between toric 4-folds whose source is Fano: such a morphism is always a composite of blow-ups along smooth invariant centers. Moreover, we show with a counterexample that, differently from the 3-dimensional case, even if both source and target are Fano, the intermediate varieties can not be chosen Fano.
In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.
We give a short proof of W{\lodarczyk's theorem that any birational map between smooth projective varieties in characteristic zero is a composition of weighted blowups and blowdowns.
The main goal of the present paper is two-fold. First we extend the theory of toroidal embeddings introduced by Kempf, Knudsen, Mumford and Saint-Donat to the class of toroidal varieties with stratifications (which is the main body of the paper). Second we give a proof of the following weak factorization theorem as an application and illustration of the theory: A birational map between complete nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero is a composite of blow ups and blow downs with smooth centers. Another proof of the weak factorization theorem appeared …
We prove a weak factorization result on birational maps of Deligne-Mumford stacks, and deduce the following: Let $U \subset X$ be an open embedding of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks such that $D = X-U$ is a normal crossings divisor, then the the simple homotopy type of the boundary complex $Δ(X,D)$ depends only on $U$.
In this paper we address the problem of computing $\text{deg}(f^n)$, the degrees of iterates of a birational map $f:\mathbb{P}^N\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^N$. For this goal, we develop a method based on two main ingredients: the factorization of a polynomial under pull-back of $f$, based on local indices of a polynomial associated to blow-ups used to resolve the contraction of hypersurfaces by $f$, and the propagation of these indices along orbits of $f$. For maps admitting algebraically stable modifications $f_X:X\rightarrow X$, where $X$ is a variety obtained from $\mathbb P^N$ by a finite number…
Suppose that X to Y is a generically finite map of nonsingular varieties over a field of characteristic zero, and v is a valuation of the function field of X. We prove that it is possible to perform a sequence of monoidal transforms X' to X and Y' to Y so that X' to Y' is a monomial mapping at the center of v. We deduce from this that a birational morphism of nonsingular varieties can be factored along a valuation by a sequence of blowups and blowdowns with nonsingular centers.
We show that, in characteristic zero, the obvious integral version of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula obtained by clearing the denominators of the Todd and Chern characters is true (without having to divide the Chow groups by their torsion subgroups). The proof introduces an alternative to Grothendieck's strategy: we use resolution of singularities and the weak factorization theorem for birational maps.
The weak factorization theorem for birational maps is used to prove that for all nonnegative i the ith mod 2 Betti number of compact nonsingular real algebraic varieties has a unique extension to a "virtual Betti number" beta_i defined for all real algebraic varieties, such that if Y is a closed subvariety of X, then beta_i(X) = beta_i(X\Y) + beta_i(Y).
